In Episode #244 of the XS Noize Podcast, host Mark Millar chats with Tom Smith — frontman of Editors — about his debut solo album There Is Nothing In The Dark That Isn't There In The Light, released 5 December on Play It Again Sam. After two decades leading Editors through seven acclaimed albums and two records with Smith & Burrows, Tom is stepping into solo territory for the first time. Motivated by a desire to reconnect with the raw, acoustic beginnings of his songwriting, he set out to create something more intimate and personal — a world away from the collaborative nature of his band projects. Produced with Iain Archer, the album blends stripped-back honesty with cinematic flourishes, moving from the nostalgic ache of Lights Of New York City to the soaring drama of Life Is For Living. Along the way, Tom explores themes of memory, resilience, and connection, balancing melancholy with hope. In this episode, Tom talks about finding his voice as a solo artist, the stories and emotions behind these songs, and we also revisit the Editors' back catalogue that made him one of the UK's most distinctive frontmen. Whether you've followed Tom's journey from the very first Editors record or are meeting him here for the first time, this is an intimate and revealing look at an artist entering a bold new chapter. In Episode #243 of the XS Noize Podcast, host Mark Millar chats with Rick Nunn — vocalist and guitarist of The Milk — about the band's powerful new album Borderlands, released 19 September on WLS Records. Formed during their school days, The Milk have spent decades honing a sound that blends soul, funk, and rock with fearless live energy. From their major-label debut Tales from the Thames Delta to the independent breakthrough Favourite Worry and the cinematic sweep of Cages, they've built a reputation for honesty, craft, and ambition. With Borderlands, they return with their most expansive and personal work yet — an album that weaves choirs, brass, and strings into stories of love, loss, and resilience. In this episode, Rick opens up about the ambition behind Borderlands, the journey from navigating label compromises to full creative independence, and how three decades of friendship continue to drive The Milk's music. He also reflects on the band's evolution and why Borderlands feels like a defining chapter in their story. Whether you've followed The Milk from the beginning or are discovering them for the first time, this episode offers a raw, inspiring look at a band still pushing forward with heart and conviction. Prime Minister Mark Carney received friendly fire from one of his biggest provincial supporters Tuesday, as Ontario Premier Doug Ford said he was 'getting concerned' about an 'almost elbows down' response to U.S. tariffs before dumping out a bottle of Crown Royal. The Power Panel discusses whether Ford's comments are a sign of fracture ahead of two days of private cabinet meetings. Plus, on the first official day of the NDP leadership contest, former NDP MP and past leadership candidate Nathan Cullen discusses how a new leader could rejuvenate the party after the 2025 election cleaved its numbers in the Commons.

Season Six of The Food Professor Podcast, presented by Caddle, kicks off with hosts Michael LeBlanc and Dr. Sylvain Charlebois diving into a whirlwind of summer news, trade turbulence, and big-picture food industry shifts. This debut episode sets the tone for what promises to be a dynamic and thought-provoking season.Michael and Sylvain begin with personal updates from a busy summer, including travels to Quebec City, Sylvain's new role as Visiting Scholar at McGill University, and Michael's experiences covering retail in New York. They also announce that full video episodes of The Food Professor are now available on YouTube, expanding the show's reach as podcasting and video continue to converge. The discussion quickly pivots to critical economic and policy issues. The hosts unpack Ottawa's decision to end retaliatory countervailing tariffs on U.S. food imports—a move Sylvain argues was long overdue, as tariffs only raised costs for Canadian consumers while doing little to protect domestic industries. With food inflation running hot, Sylvain predicts prices will ease by early fall, pointing to statements from Loblaw CEO Per Bank as validation. From there, the pair explore the elimination of the U.S. “de minimis” exemption, a decision with far-reaching consequences for Canadian small businesses and independent food producers shipping across the border. Michael emphasizes how indie retailers relying on U.S. customers will be hit hardest, while Sylvain warns that Ottawa must address Canada's own $150 threshold to avoid worsening inequities. The conversation expands globally with a deep dive into China's escalating tariffs on Canadian canola, pork, and lobster—measures Sylvain interprets as retaliation for Canada's 100% tariff on Chinese EVs. He makes the case for a more nuanced approach: segment tariffs between luxury and affordable EVs, allowing consumers greater choice while protecting farmers from geopolitical fallout.Other highlights include an analysis of the pickle aisle—yes, really—where the Bick's withdrawal from Canada illustrates the tangled realities of cross-border food supply chains. The hosts also discuss Dr Pepper Keurig's acquisition of JDE Peet's, situating it within a larger trend of consumer packaged goods giants restructuring in response to inflation, climate change, GLP-1 weight-loss drugs, and a rewiring of global trade flows. The episode wraps on a lighter note, celebrating the Canadian arrival of Bobby Flay's Burger concept and teasing next week's guest, Globe and Mail journalist Greg Mercer, author of The Lobster Trap. With sharp analysis, lively banter, and a keen eye on the forces reshaping food and retail, Michael and Sylvain set the stage for a season that will track how consumers, farmers, and retailers navigate inflation, trade disputes, shifting supply chains, and new food trends. The Food Professor #podcast is presented by Caddle. Guests: Star reporters Raisa Patel and Josh Rubin Prime Minister Mark Carney is pulling back on Canada's trade fight with the U.S., dropping retaliatory tariffs on goods covered under the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) even as Donald Trump escalates with new penalties on Canadian steel, aluminum, and hundreds of manufactured products. It's a sharp turn from Carney's “elbows up” campaign promise, and it's raising questions in business and political circles alike. We unpack the political strategy behind Carney's pivot, which Canadian industries are hardest hit by the trade wars, and whether another U-turn will win any ground with Trump. On today's episode of the Candice Malcolm Show, Candice discusses Prime Minister Mark Carney's announcement that he will drop all retaliatory tariffs against the Americans. In other worlds, Elbows Down! Candice brings receipts and shows the many times that Carney said the exact opposite – during the Liberal leadership race and repeatedly throughout the election campaign. But here's the thing about “Elbows Up” – it was always a lie. It was created as a partisan Liberal campaign slogan to revive their dying party. The government media pretended “Elbows Up” was a universal Canadian grassroots movement of patriotism and unity – but it wasn't. It was always partisan. And it was always a lie. The reality is that Carney's plan all along was to cave. Juno News reported this back in March – that Eurasia Group President Ian Bremmer told insiders that Carney would “quietly cave” to the Americans after the campaign. And that's exactly what happened. Later in the episode, Candice is joined by National Telegraph's Wyatt Claypool and they discuss how the Liberals have already broken their promises on immigration, and a new poll showing Poilievre back on top. Friday Focus provides listeners with a focused, half-hour masterclass on the big issues, events and trends driving the news and current events. The show features Janice Gross Stein, the founding director of the Munk School of Global Affairs and bestselling author, in conversation with Rudyard Griffiths, Chair and moderator of the Munk Debates. Rudyard and Janice open today's Friday Focus with the fallout from last week's Trump-Putin meeting and Monday's Zelensky visit to Washington. Putin is walking back from almost every concession he offered last week, essentially demanding that Ukraine be demilitarized without a pathway to NATO membership. This is a non-starter for Ukraine. How did we go from the bromance of Alaska back to the stalemate of February 2022 in the span of a week? It is becoming increasingly obvious that President Trump is not able or willing to do the serious work required to get a deal in place. In the second half of the show Rudyard and Janice turn to trade with the US. Why is Canada being singled out for particularly rough treatment? Carney is trying to reset negotiations by removing retaliatory tariffs because he knows that if CUSMA collapses, Canada will pay a heavy price. The PM pushed an elbows up narrative in order to win the election. He positioned himself as the defender of Canada against Trump's America. Is he able to back away from this narrative and do a deal that might make him look weak but protect Canada's economic interests? We are back in The Studio Red Walls to get into all of the news and shows from the week. We rap about the terrible interactions that have been coming from our growing interactions with AI through social media, the escalation of forces headed to DC, and I get into my feelings about the continued barbarism of the Israeli campaign in Gaza. Join us on the another winding yet intriguing yap session on all of the week's current events.
Steve Rothery is a founding member of one of my all time favourite bands, Marillion. Despite various personnel changes in the early years of the band, Marillion have maintained a stable line-up for the past 36 years. One of the keys to their ongoing unity is surely their tolerance for band members to indulge in side-projects, and Rothery is about to release an album under the name Bioscope, in collaboration with current Tangerine Dream bandleader Thorsten Quaeschning. The album is called “Gento” and features Elbow drummer Alex Reeves behind the kit. I was pleased to welcome Steve back onto the podcast to discuss the new project, as well getting an update on the new Marillion album, and a chat about the 30th anniversary of one of their finest albums “Afraid Of Sunlight”. C-Lo updates on the Mets beating the Mariners, with Mark Vientos's 3-run HR. Evan Roberts advocated for A-Rod as Yankees Manager. The Yankees swept the Cardinals. Brian Daboll discussed Jaxson Dart, and Shaun Morash has "Jaxson Dart fever." Gronk and Edelman predict the Giants will win 8 or 9 games.
In Episode #241 of the XS Noize Podcast, host Mark Millar chats with Matt Berninger — frontman of The National and acclaimed solo artist — about his brand-new album Get Sunk. On this episode of the Three-Inning Save podcast, Dodgers starter Tony Gonsolin is out for the season after elbow surgery, and reliever Brock Stewart was placed on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation, and will have testing done Wednesday in Los Angeles. Stewart is the 19th different Dodgers pitcher to be placed on the injured list in 2025. Plus the Dodgers lost a wild game in extra innings to the Angels, dropping to 0-5 against the Halos this season. The loss dropped the Dodgers into a first-place tie with the Padres in the National League West. Plus, Shohei Ohtani homered and continues to pile up runs scored, Michael Conforto continues to struggle, and a former Dodgers minor leaguer (Justin Hagenman) got a FOUR-inning save (close enough!) for the Mets on Tuesday night. The Three-Inning Save is part of the Fans First Sports Network. Hosted by Eric Stephen and Jacob Burch, with questions from Craig Minami. Produced by Brian Salvatore. Trump is headed to Sarah Palin's house in Alaska to see if he and Putin can come to deal on Ukraine. The Europeans and the left wing media are falling over themselves in hopes that he fails, but because land trade bad, death and killing good. A new peace deal and trade route through Kardashian homeland and Azerbijian bypasses the European need to free the black sea from the Ruskies and might set up Bad Orange Man for the Nobel Peace Prize? There are still some questions about Aaron Judge's elbow. We talked about the need for the Yankees to get Giancarlo Stanton's bat back in the lineup. A caller who just retired said he's not sure what to do with his time.

C-Lo then covers the Mets' near no-hitter and sweep by the Guardians, prompting Frank The Tank's outrage and prediction of another sweep in Milwaukee. George Kittle defends his position from aspiring newcomers. The hour concludes with Boomer guessing real vs. fake headlines from Jerry.

What if the Hat Man wasn't just watching…but hunting? When Charles was just three years old, he began having vivid nighttime encounters in his basement, where a formless being made of light would challenge him across the board. Around the same time, a crop circle mysteriously appeared beside his house, setting off a chain of eerie events that would haunt his family for years. However, when they moved to a new home on a road ominously named Devil's Elbow, things took a darker turn. Hooded figures on the roof, cult activity in the woods, and the Hat Man watching from the shadows, not alone, but with companions. What followed was a terrifying unraveling of reality, memory, and the thin veil between worlds. Please pray for Tony's wife, Lindsay, as she battles breast cancer. Your prayers make a difference!
