Excerpts from Hebrews 11:17-19Our study of Hebrews 11 continues as we focus our thoughts on the Lord's directing Abraham to sacrifice his son, Isaac, on the altar. It's a gripping story and an incredible example of faith!Originally preached on August 9, 2020 To support this ministry financially, visit: https://www.lightsource.com/donate/1447/29
Across this episode and the next, Justin and Bec are taking an extensive look at Elvis' home recordings made during his time in the US Army while serving in Germany. Though none of them surfaced until after his death, as we learned from "The Colonel & The King" last year, Elvis was explicitly encouraged by his manager to record material at home in secret. Excerpts from the tapes have appeared on such releases as A Legendary Performer Vol. 4, A Golden Celebration, Home Recordings, and Memphis Recording Services' "Made in Germany" - and by sheer coincidence, on the day we recorded the episode, the official Elvis collector's label Follow That Dream announced an upcoming 2026 box set "Elvis - Soldier Boy" that will feature two books and new restorations of these home recordings. What we hear on the tapes is a a fly on the wall glimpse of a deeply private celebrity during a period of intense homesick and loneliness, coping with the grief of having lost his mother and being away from everything he's come to know as a successful musician and film star... but also a determined, fully invested artist developing his skills. Plainly evident is Elvis exploring concepts and styles with friends, family and creative collaborators like Red West and Charlie Hodge, for his return to his career upon the end of his military service. Songs like "Like A Baby" and "Are You Lonesome Tonight" foreshadow Elvis' singles and secular "Elvis is Back" album from 1960, while his love of gospel continues to be evident as "He Knows Just What I Need" and "His Hand in Mine" similarly nod toward the coming gospel album. Yet there on these tapes that Elvis never again touched (on known recordings, anyway): Hank Williams' "I Can't Help It If I Still In Love With You," Nat King Cole's "Mona Lisa," and Don Gibson's "Oh Lonesome Me," and many more! Was he just fooling around with songs he'd heard, or was he seriously considering these for his upcoming albums? And with material like "Are You Sincere," "Stand By Me" and "Danny Boy" popping up here, too: how do these home recordings fit into the larger puzzle of Elvis' musical journey from pre-Sun Records all the way to the Jungle Room? We ponder all that and more. A technical note: Aside from clips from the above box sets/compilations where specifically mentioned, most of the audio from the home recordings you'll hear is audio that has been "re-balanced" on a per-track basis for the purposes of education, analysis and historical interest. While the new FTD set is not available yet, and MRS's release was a decently faithful restoration of the tape, other releases have featured excessive noise removal, so much of what you hear in this episode are careful adjustments that aim to retain full content and quality while making the vocal nuances a bit clearer as though the tape recorder had been a bit closer to Elvis & the other vocalists' mouths rather than closer to the instruments. Hopefully you may hear little inflections or details you hadn't ever heard before!

What if the missing ingredient in your creative life isn't more productivity, but more loafing? In this solo episode, Kat shares a personal update from her summer and an honest reflection on burnout, rest, and the radical act of doing less. Drawing from the book Writing, Creativity and Soul by Sue Monk Kidd, she introduces the concept of creative loitering, and makes the case that your imagination actually requires aimless, unstructured time to do its best work. Kat reads from the chapter "Creative Loitering," explores why slowing down is not laziness but a prerequisite for original thinking, and shares how she has been building more space into her own life, from beach reads and Paris Review issues at the hair salon to long European-style dinners and mornings with no agenda. This episode is an invitation to reclaim your human mind, protect your creative energy, and trust that stepping back is sometimes the most productive thing you can do. דכמו בנוגע לה', שאין לשום נמצא דמיון אליו כלל, ובכ"ז ישנו הציווי והנתינת-כח להיות "והלכת בדרכיו", כ"ה בנוגע לאלו המביאים רצון ודבר ה' לכל ישראל – שצ"ל "גופא בתר רישא אזיל" – ללכת בדרכיהם.1) משיחת יו"ד שבט ה'תשי"ב 2) משיחת יו"ד שבט ה'תש"כ 3) משיחת יו"ד שבט ה'תשל"ו ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=17-06-2026 Synopsis (1) When the Rebbe ascends in an immeasurable ascent, there must likewise be an immeasurable change on our part. And even if one merely “opens for me like the eye of a needle,” nevertheless, if it comes from a sincere desire and decision that no matter what, one will go with the Rebbe, then the Rebbe takes him along in all of his ascents. And based on the teaching of the Maggid, “Know that what is above is from you,” it is understood that this shift below causes an immeasurable ascent above, through which the person also attains an immeasurable ascent. (2) From the wording of the verse “Az yashir” (lit. “Then Moshe will sing…” rather than “Then Moshe sang”) the Sages derived, “From here is the source for the resurrection of the dead from the Torah.” Although there is also a concept of resurrection in a spiritual sense (“Just as his descendants are alive, so too is he alive,” especially by studying his Torah), nevertheless, it is understood that we also need the resurrection in the literal sense. And this requires that “Then Moshe will sing,” meaning that when “those who dwell in the dust awaken and sing,” the Moshe of our generation will be at their head, and he will lead us upright to our land with a “new song.” (3) The main role of a Nasi is not just to be “elevated above the people,” but to be connected with the people and uplift them, just as “the body follows the head” even though the head is above the body. Because just as with regard to Hashem, although no created being bears any comparison to Him whatsoever, we are nevertheless commanded and empowered to “walk in His ways,” so too regarding those who convey Hashem's will and Hashem's word to the entire Jewish people: “The body must follow the head,” meaning one must walk in their ways.Excerpts from sichos of (1) 10 Shevat 5712; (2) 10 Shevat 5720; (3) 10 Shevat 5736 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=17-06-2026 לע”נ הרבנית עטא דבורה בת ר' מרדכי ע"ה מרזוב ליום היארצייט שלה ב' תמוז. ת.נ.צ.ב.ה.

The Puritan Ezekiel Hopkins (1634-1692) said, "We must learn that the glory of God is to be preferred before all other things.” It is in keeping with those words from Ezekiel Hopkins that Darrell Harrison and Virgil "Omaha" Walker have endeavored to address the almost ineffable topic of The Majesty of God. True to the expositional tradition of the Just Thinking podcast, Darrell and Virgil look to Scripture, as well as trusted Puritan and contemporary theologians, to remind followers of Jesus Christ of God's incomparable majesty and, as Ezekiel Hopkins rightly stated, that the glory of the God in whom they profess to believe is to be preferred above all other things. Part 1A: In today's lecture, students were asked to define the Caribbean and their place within it. The class began exploring questions of identity, heritage, belonging, and the meaning of Caribbean existence within the modern world system. Students reflected on their own heritage while examining the idea that the Caribbean itself may be an invention shaped by colonialism, imperialism, and external power structures. The lecture questioned whether the Caribbean is truly independent given its economic dependence, reliance on aid, and the continued challenges to its sovereignty within the postcolonial order. The Professor argued that life is fundamentally about people and human relationships, yet life is also shaped by structures of power and by what societies make of themselves. Within this framework, the Caribbean's position in the global order has often been constructed to maintain the region in a position of servitude, dependency, and vulnerability.Students explored the ideas of Mutabaruka, particularly his statement that “God is a creation of man.” The Professor discussed this position as emerging from the colonial experience and from the imposition of European religious traditions upon Indigenous and African peoples as though they possessed no spiritual systems of their own. This led to broader discussions about colonization, faith, spirituality, and the psychological effects of colonial domination. The class also examined the continued divisions within the Caribbean and questioned whether Caribbean unity may provide a path forward. Responding to a student's question about solutions, the Professor connected the discussion to the work of Ama Mazama and the Afrocentric paradigm, arguing that one of the Caribbean's major problems is the dominance of Western frameworks and ideas that cloud the minds of colonized peoples. The lecture emphasized the need to reconceptualize Caribbean thought and identity outside of inherited colonial assumptions. The Professor, Rev. Renaldo McKenzie, argued that Caribbean peoples have always possessed a roadmap toward development and liberation, but have often privileged European models, institutions, and values instead. At the same time, local elites and institutional powers within the Caribbean have historically acted to preserve the existing order and prevent transformative regional change. The lecture concluded by emphasizing that these structures are strategic and that Caribbean peoples must themselves become strategic in determining how to truly free themselves, grow, and develop. The Professor pointed to Cuba as an example of a nation that attempted to pursue its own path despite international pressures and economic punishment. While this choice affected Cuba's wealth and development, the argument was made that Cuba sought to preserve dignity, sovereignty, and an alternative vision of life rather than fully surrendering itself to external powers and global capitalism. This is an excerpt of the full Lecture made available for The Neoliberal Round @RenaldoMckenzie YouTube Channel @YouTube The Lectures are held @jtsintersection This is published by The Neoliberal Corporation. 2) לאחרי מזמור ק"ז שבתהלים, שענינו "יודו לה' חסדו וגו'" על ארבעה שיצאו מצרה לרווחה, וכמ"ש שההודאה צ"ל בפני "עשרה מישראל ותרי מינייהו רבנן", בא מזמור ק"ח שבו מדובר שהישועה של הקב"ה לבנ"י – "למען יחלצון ידידיך הושיעה ימינך וענני" – נראית בגלוי גם בעיני בשר של אומות העולם – "אודך בעמים ה' ואזמרך בלאומים"!1) משיחת ט"ו תמוז ה'תשמ"ו 2) משיחת י"ב תמוז ה'תשמ"ז ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=07-06-2026 Synopsis (1) When a Jew sees that Moshiach still has not come, although regarding the past he understands that it is for a purpose etc., nevertheless regarding the future he must cry out and demand, “Until when?!” When we cry out, “Give thanks to Hashem for He is good; His kindness is everlasting,” we want to do it “those redeemed by Hashem, whom He redeemed from the hand of an oppressor” (redeemed in the past tense), as it says in Kapitel 107 of Tehillim. Since the Nasi Hador is now beginning to recite this kapitel, he must arouse mercy in heaven, and moreover, mercy down here, so that we will become those “whom He redeemed” in the past tense, with the coming of Moshiach speedily in our time. (2) After Kapitel 107 (which states, “They shall give thanks to Hashem for His kindness…,” regarding the “Four who are obligated to give thanks,” who must do so in the presence of “ten Jews, two of whom must be rabbis”), comes Kapitel 108, in which Hashem's salvation (“Save with Your right hand and answer me”) is openly visible even to the nations of the world (“I will give thanks to You, Hashem, among the peoples; I will sing Your praise among the nations”).Excerpts from sichos of (1) 15 Tammuz 5746, and (2) 12 Tammuz 5747 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=07-06-2026 לזכות ר' דוד שמעון ישראל בן שלומית שי' ליום ההולדת שלו כ"ב סיון - לשנת ברכה והצלחה, ואריכות ימים ושנים טובות

After the Sermon: Deuteronomy 23-25 (excerpts) by West Hills Church
Most of our lives are filled with ordinary, mundane moments. We move through the same routines, responsibilities, conversations, and tasks that can often feel disconnected from anything “spiritual.” But does God care about those parts of life? Does following Jesus actually shape the everyday and seemingly boring moments? This week in Deuteronomy, we will walk through a section of laws that may initially seem random, yet together they reveal how God cares about how His people live in every sphere of life. God doesn't just care about how His people act in spiritual moments but also in the ordinary rhythms of everyday life, calling His people to reflect His character in everything they do.

Today I revisit one of my favorite singers of all time, the extraordinary Norwegian lyric-coloratura soprano Eidé Noréna (1884-1968), whose voice and artistry hit me like a bolt out of the blue when I first discovered her recordings several decades ago. Born Karoline Hansen, she made her concert debut at the age of 19 and in 1907 began her operatic career as Amor in Orfeo ed Euridice. In 1909 she married the actor Egil Eide, through whose coaching she became celebrated for her dramatic portrayals. Under her married name Kaja Eide she became one of the Norway's most famous singers, though her career was essentially a provincial one until, mid-career, she restudied her technique and rebuilt her voice, which led to her La Scala debut as Gilda under the baton of Arturo Toscanini (and under her new professional name, Eidé Noréna). She went on to an international career, performing in the world's most celebrated opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, Covent Garden, the Salzburg Festival, and, particularly, the Paris Opéra. Her repertoire was a wide one, ranging from Ophélie to Desdemona, and her vocal technique was solid to the point of near-perfection, her legato singing being particularly remarkable. What sets her apart, and what makes her one of my favorite singers, is her profoundly musical interpretations allied to a keen dramatic sense, perhaps instilled in her by her husband. I originally introduced her to my listeners in Episode 71, and I think it's high time we spend some more time with her. In this episode I feature her exclusively in the music of Charles Gounod, beginning with the charming song “Sérénade” set to a Victor Hugo text and continuing with the Roi de Thulé and Jewel Song from Faust, concluding with extended excerpts from Roméo et Juliette. We are lucky that there exists a live recording of a complete (albeit heavily cut) performance from January 1935 of Noréna as Juliette, with the American tenor Charles Hackett (1887-1942) as her Roméo. Excerpts of that recording are supplemented by studio recordings from 1929 of duets from the opera with the Corsican tenor Gaston Micheletti (1892-1959) as her Roméo. Countermelody is the podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and author yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. The link will also take you to Countermelody's Patreon page, where you can pledge your monthly or yearly support at whatever level you can afford.

Christians are often charged with espousing a sexual (and marital) ethic that is “outdated and oppressive”. If that's how skeptics attack our New Testament convictions, they are even more denigrating of the Old Testament's commands! To be sure, the Law has some pretty difficult and archaic things to say about sex and marriage, especially in our section of Deuteronomy for this sermon. How do we see God's wisdom and kindness in such laws (and how does any of it point us to Jesus?)? Join us for answers!
