This episode contains discussions of sexual assault, violence and child abuse. Listener discretion is advised. How did the mob lynching of a notorious astrologer and occultist in June 1628 act as a grim prelude to the demise of King Charles I? Why did John Lambe - accused of witchcraft, sorcery, and moral corruption - become the target for popular anger at a monarchy seen as distant, corrupt, and unaccountable?Professor Suzannah Lipscomb is joined by Professor Alastair Bellany to uncover how witchcraft accusations became political weapons, and how the killing of one man revealed a terrifying truth: royal authority in England was beginning to fail.MORE:Tudor True Crime: Murder in the Stuart CourtListen on AppleListen on SpotifyGiordano Bruno: Mystic, Heretic, SpyListen on AppleListen on SpotifyPresented by Professor Suzannah Lipscomb. Fra Diavlo's Recipes for the Damned started as a joke — what if we made a death metal record where the lyrics were just someone reading a recipe? We couldn't lift actual recipes for copyright reasons, so instead we wrote original lyrics structured like instructions and twisted them into brutality. That's how you get titles like “Gnocchi Guillotine,” “Boil the Priest,” “Mince the Heretic,” and “Sous-Vide Sacrifice.” Because the AI took “death metal” literally, it leaned into classic genre tropes — anti-religion imagery, ritual sacrifice, damnation — so the kitchen becomes a cathedral of fire. “Béarnaise Bloodletting,” “Pan-Sear Damnation,” “Al Dente Execution,” even “Last Course: Cannibal Crème Brûlée” — it's culinary language weaponized. It's absurd, theatrical, and self-aware. That first record is where Fra Diavlo stopped being a bit and became a fully formed concept: cooking as ritual, metal as satire, dinner as damnation.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

In this episode, we talk about why learning to study the Bible faithfully is not optional for the Christian. Scripture is not only a gift, but it is also a command. We are called to read God's Word and to rightly handle the Word of Truth, carefully distinguishing truth from error. This means we are not only guarding against false teaching from the outside, but also guarding our own hearts and minds from the danger of misinterpreting Scripture. We do not listen to heretics, so we ought not accidentally become one ourselves. The principles we share in this episode are just the beginning of learning how to guard against such error and handle God's Word with care and faithfulness. We discuss several common ways the Bible is misunderstood today: ignoring what the text meant to its original audience, reading our own meaning into Scripture, approaching the Bible through emotionalism or overspiritualization, and drawing principles from passages that were never intended to teach them. In a culture that often asks, “What does this text mean to me?”, we are reminded that there is only one true meaning to any particular Scripture passage - the meaning the author intended when the text was written. There is one meaning, there may be several sound principles that can be drawn from a passage, and there are many ways those principles can be faithfully applied in different situations. Many assume careful Bible study is only for pastors or scholars, but God has given His Word to all believers. Just as we educate our children to read, analyze, and understand various types of literature, world history, and the English language, we must not neglect the most important task which is teaching ourselves and our families how to faithfully read, understand, and apply the Scriptures.Listen to our previous podcast series on The Spiritual Disciplines including the first episode on Bible Reading and Prayer >> https://reformedfaithandfamily.com/growing-in-the-spiritual-disciplines-a-podcast-series/Books Mentioned in This Episode Can Be Found in Our Recommended Resources Section on Spiritual Growth:Grasping God's Word by Duvall and HaysFind this and other Bible Study Tools on our Spiritual Growth Recommended Resources page: https://reformedfaithandfamily.com/recommended-resources/spiritual-growth-resources/Products Mentioned In This Episode:Gray Toad Tallow: Use Coupon Code RFF20 for 20% off your first order.Keep Up with Reformed Faith and Family in the Following Ways:Never miss an episode, article, or a new FREEBIE by joining our weekly newsletter here: https://reformedfaithandfamily.com/subscribe/Build your library with our recommended resources: https://reformedfaithandfamily.com/recommended-resources/Read the latest articles: https://reformedfaithandfamily.com/blog/Download your FREEBIES in our store: https://reformedfaithandfamily.com/educational-resources-store/Check out the Gift Shop: https://reformedfaithandfamily.com/gift-shop/Good Dog Bible Rebinds: https://reformedfaithandfamily.com/good-dog-designs-and-rebinds/WE HAVE A FAVOR TO ASK! If you are excited about our mission at Reformed Faith and Family to guide men and women as they seek to learn more about Reformed theology and equip families as they disciple their children, then please leave our podcast a 5-star review and share it with a friend. The Heretic of Cacheu: Crispina Peres and the Struggle over Life in Seventeenth-Century West Africa (U Chicago Press, 2025) by Professor Toby Green tells the extraordinary story of seventeenth-century West African slave trader Crispina Peres to explore the shifting, sophisticated world in which she lived. In 1665, Crispina Peres, the most powerful trader in the West African slave-trafficking port of Cacheu, was arrested by the Portuguese Inquisition. Her enemies had conspired to denounce her for taking treatments prescribed by Senegambian healers, the djabakós. But who was Peres? And why was the Inquisition so concerned with policing the faith of a West African woman in today's Guinea-Bissau? In The Heretic of Cacheu, award-winning historian Dr. Green takes us to the heart of this conundrum, immersing us in the atmosphere of an otherwise distant setting. We learn how people in seventeenth-century Cacheu built their houses; styled their clothes; healed themselves from illness; and worshipped, worked, and played. Green renders the haunting realities of the growing slave trade and the rise of European empires in shocking detail. By the 1650s, the relationships between Europe, West Africa, and the Americas were already old and tangled, with slaving ports, colonies, and military bases having intermingled over many generations. But Cacheu also profoundly troubled this dynamic. It was globally connected to places ranging from China and India to Brazil and Colombia, and women such as Crispina Peres ran the town and challenged the patriarchy of empire. For the first time, through surviving documents recording Peres's case, The Heretic of Cacheu lets readers experience the reality of this unique place and time through a remarkable act of historical recovery. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Was England's break with Rome really about religious freedom—or about power and authority? In this controversial episode, Pat and Stephen uncover what actually happened between the English monarchy and the papacy during the Reformation. Drawing on the scholarship of Eamon Duffy, we challenge the familiar narrative of “Bloody” Mary I and tolerant Elizabeth I, showing instead that Catholic faith in England remained vibrant and deeply rooted long after the Reformation began. We examine Elizabeth I's Acts of Supremacy and Uniformity, the suppression of the Catholic Mass, and the enforcement of religious conformity—revealing a slow, reluctant reform imposed from above. At the center of the episode is Pope Pius V's 1570 bull, Regnans in Excelsis, which formally excommunicated Elizabeth I, declared her a heretic, and released her subjects from allegiance. Finally, we explore how the bull backfired—strengthening Elizabeth's rule, hardening persecution of Catholics, and cementing the schism between England and Rome that still exists today.Link to the Papal Bull: https://www.papalencyclicals.net/pius05/p5regnans.htmIf you'd like to donate to our ministry or be a monthly partner that receives newsletters and one on one discussions with Dr. Stephen Boyce, here's a link: https://give.tithe.ly/?formId=6381a2ee-b82f-42a7-809e-6b733cec05a7

In this episode of the Crazy Wisdom podcast, host Stewart Alsop sits down with Peter Schmidt Nielsen, who is building FPGA-accelerated servers at Saturn Data. The conversation explores why servers need FPGAs, how these field-programmable gate arrays work as "IO expanders" for massive memory bandwidth, and why they're particularly well-suited for vector database and search applications. Peter breaks down the technical realities of FPGAs - including why they "really suck" in many ways compared to GPUs and CPUs - while explaining how his company is leveraging them to provide terabyte-per-second bandwidth to 1.3 petabytes of flash storage. The discussion ranges from distributed systems challenges and the CAP theorem to the hardware-software relationship in modern computing, offering insights into both the philosophical aspects of search technology and the nuts-and-bolts engineering of memory controllers and routing fabrics. For more information about Peter's work, you can reach him on Twitter at @PTRSCHMDTNLSN or find his website at saturndata.com.Timestamps00:00 Introduction to FPGAs and Their Role in Servers02:47 Understanding FPGA Limitations and Use Cases05:55 Exploring Different Types of Servers08:47 The Importance of Memory and Bandwidth11:52 Philosophical Insights on Search and Access Patterns14:50 The Relationship Between Hardware and Search Queries17:45 Challenges of Distributed Systems20:47 The CAP Theorem and Its Implications23:52 The Evolution of Technology and Knowledge Management26:59 FPGAs as IO Expanders29:35 The Trade-offs of FPGAs vs. ASICs and GPUs32:55 The Future of AI Applications with FPGAs35:51 Exciting Developments in Hardware and BusinessKey Insights1. FPGAs are fundamentally "crappy ASICs" with serious limitations - Despite being programmable hardware, FPGAs perform far worse than general-purpose alternatives in most cases. A $100,000 high-end FPGA might only match the memory bandwidth of a $600 gaming GPU. They're only valuable for specific niches like ultra-low latency applications or scenarios requiring massive parallel I/O operations, making them unsuitable for most computational workloads where CPUs and GPUs excel.2. The real value of FPGAs lies in I/O expansion, not computation - Rather than using FPGAs for their processing power, Saturn Data leverages them primarily as cost-effective ways to access massive amounts of DRAM controllers and NVMe interfaces. Their server design puts 200 FPGAs in a 2U enclosure with 1.3 petabytes of flash storage and terabyte-per-second read bandwidth, essentially using FPGAs as sophisticated I/O expanders.3. Access patterns determine hardware performance more than raw specs - The way applications access data fundamentally determines whether specialized hardware will provide benefits. Applications that do sparse reads across massive datasets (like vector databases) benefit from Saturn Data's architecture, while those requiring dense computation or frequent inter-node communication are better served by traditional hardware. Understanding these patterns is crucial for matching workloads to appropriate hardware.4. Distributed systems complexity stems from failure tolerance requirements - The difficulty of distributed systems isn't inherent but depends on what failures you need to tolerate. Simple approaches that restart on any failure are easy but unreliable, while Byzantine fault tolerance (like Bitcoin) is extremely complex. Most practical systems, including banks, find middle ground by accepting occasional unavailability rather than trying to achieve perfect consistency, availability, and partition tolerance simultaneously.5. Hardware specialization follows predictable cycles of generalization and re-specialization - Computing hardware consistently follows "Makimoto's Wave" - specialized hardware becomes more general over time, then gets leapfrogged by new specialized solutions. CPUs became general-purpose, GPUs evolved from fixed graphics pipelines to programmable compute, and now companies like Etched are creating transformer-specific ASICs. This cycle repeats as each generation adds programmability until someone strips it away for performance gains.6. Memory bottlenecks are reshaping the hardware landscape - The AI boom has created severe memory shortages, doubling costs for DRAM components overnight. This affects not just GPU availability but creates opportunities for alternative architectures. When everyone faces higher memory costs, the relative premium for specialized solutions like FPGA-based systems becomes more attractive, potentially shifting the competitive landscape for memory-intensive applications.7. Search applications represent ideal FPGA use cases due to their sparse access patterns - Vector databases and search workloads are particularly well-suited to FPGA acceleration because they involve searching through massive datasets with sparse access patterns rather than dense computation. These applications can effectively utilize the high bandwidth to flash storage and parallel I/O capabilities that FPGAs provide, making them natural early adopters for this type of specialized hardware architecture.

**Contains story of a young male suicide**Out of the devastation of the English Civil Wars, a radical new religious movement was born. The early Quakers, led by fiery and charismatic preachers, believed they had been chosen by God to save souls and purify a corrupt world. But the origins of Quakerism were far darker and more complex than the peaceful faith we know today. Convinced of divine purpose, Quakers performed failed miracles, disrupted services, defied the law, and faced imprisonment, all in pursuit of what they saw as God's truth.Professor Suzannah Lipscomb is joined by Dr. Erica Canela to uncover how religious zeal, fear, and desperation drove ordinary men and women to extraordinary, and sometimes terrifying, acts.MOREVoices of Thunder: Radical Women of the 17th CenturyListen on AppleListen on SpotifyHeretic or Martyr? We head to South Africa to start this week.  Two South African men vanished from separate hospitals in recent years - only to be discovered days later, their bodies found in the strangest of places. Official explanations have never added up. Were they murdered? And if so… was their murderer human? Or something else entirely?  Then we'll head to England, where, perched high above the sea on the island's northeast coast, the ruins of Whitby Abbey have stood for nearly fourteen centuries - silent, watching, and supposedly haunted. Then,  a Veteran shares with us his tale of something from the other side reaching out and grabbing him. Who did this soldier show up with as he was not alone. Lastly, a young girl moves in a new home that she immediately hates. What lives there and why does it hate her so much? Do you want to get all of our episodes a WEEK early, ad free? Want to help us support amazing charities? Join us on Patreon!Want to be a Patron?
