Two young Mormon women discuss their faith in the house of a strange man who has plans to make it a night no one will forget.Heretic is a psychological horror movie like no other led by a strong and unlikely, Hugh Grant, performance. The film also stars Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East who also deliver strong performances in a movie that's highly dialogue-driven, but tense throughout. From the character expressions to the theological debates, this movie had us unconformable from start to finish and one that we believe is a modern classic. We head to South Africa to start this week. Two South African men vanished from separate hospitals in recent years - only to be discovered days later, their bodies found in the strangest of places. Official explanations have never added up. Were they murdered? And if so… was their murderer human? Or something else entirely? Then we'll head to England, where, perched high above the sea on the island's northeast coast, the ruins of Whitby Abbey have stood for nearly fourteen centuries - silent, watching, and supposedly haunted. Then, a Veteran shares with us his tale of something from the other side reaching out and grabbing him. Who did this soldier show up with as he was not alone. Lastly, a young girl moves in a new home that she immediately hates. What lives there and why does it hate her so much? Spring of 1842 was a world-shaping event, the introduction of the endowment ceremony by Joseph Smith to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We've talked about it and a few of the more recent changes to the endowment a few times, but this is the overview. What it was when it was introduced, how it changed under Brigham Young, and many of the changes that have happened since his death, all under one (long) segment. Then we talk about Heretic, a movie about two missionaries in a cat-and-mouse game with a well-educated anti-Mormon playing by his own rules. Then we wrap with happy news from ABC and Jimmy Kimmel responding to the government shutdown and SNAP running dry. This week, Ben Appel joins me to talk about his new book, Cis White Gay: The Making of a Gender Heretic, a memoir about leaving one kind of cult only to stumble into another. Raised in a rigid Christian community, Ben found refuge in the gay rights movement and, later, the Ivy League—until "allyship" started to look less like solidarity and more like a loyalty oath. We discuss • Why he chose the deliberately provocative title Cis, White, Gay — and what reactions revealed about current identity politics. • How queer "community" has become increasingly moralized, hierarchical, and policed — and what gets lost when dissent is framed as betrayal. • The difference between taste and taboo — and how aesthetic preferences are now treated as political statements. • Why "representation" has replaced excellence as the highest cultural virtue. • How literary gatekeeping operates today — from publishers and prize committees to informal online watchdogs. • The loneliness of ideological nonconformity in queer and creative circles. • The professional and social costs of questioning orthodoxy — including lost friendships, lost opportunities, and subtle blacklisting. Guest Bio: Ben Appel is a writer and commentator whose memoir, Cis White Gay, traces his path from a strict Christian sect to progressive activism—and his break with movement orthodoxy; he's written for outlets like Newsweek, UnHerd, and more, and publishes on Substack. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2025/10/binary-system-podcast-479-we-watched-heretic-and-mayor-of-kingstown/In our continuing series "Elizabeth And Kathryn Watch Things That Are Less Than A Year Old", this week we watched 2024's Heretic (came out last November, just under a year, still counts!) It's a brilliantly creepy, slow burn of a film, Hugh Grant somehow manages to be charming and terrifying at the same time, and the plot is...well we're not going to spoil the plot because you really need to see this one. What we are going to spoil is everything that happened in the Season 4 premiere of Mayor of Kingstown. And oh boy, this season is gonna be brutal. Kyle's going to prison, Bunny's best friend is looking down the barrel of a prison war, there's a new gang leader executing rival gang members with a train, and Evelyn looks like she's realized how much she actually cares about Mike right as Mike kicks her out of his life. And since this is the last season you just know that pretty much every character has a giant target on them.Oh, and Mike still doesn't know what happened to Iris. Wonder how well THAT'S going to go over. This episode's outro is a clip from Move It Forward by TeknoAXE. Looking for a present for that hard-to-shop-for person? Filmmaker and frequent Projection Booth co-host David Kittredge returns to the show to talk about his stunning new documentary Boorman and the Devil (2025). Premiering at the Venice Film Festival and recently screened at the Brooklyn Horror Film Fest, the film examines the making—and unmaking—of John Boorman's unfinished masterpiece The Heretic, a project that became both a creative obsession and a cautionary tale.Mike and David trace the film's journey from inception to restoration, exploring the documentary's mix of melancholy reflection and deep admiration for Boorman's uncompromising artistry. As one critic called it, Boorman and the Devil is “melancholy, thoughtful, and highly perceptive”—a love letter to pure cinematic vision and the madness that sometimes comes with it.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-projection-booth-podcast--5513239/support.Become a supporter of The Projection Booth at http://www.patreon.com/projectionbooth

Two Mormon missionaries knock on the wrong door in A24's psychological thriller Heretic, starring Hugh Grant as a man who traps them in his home for a deadly debate about religion. This episode digs into the film's exploration of faith, proselytizing, and the fine line between genuine discussion and manipulation. We examine how the movie humanizes its missionary protagonists while challenging both religious certainty and militant atheism. Hugh Grant's character mirrors the psychological control tactics religions have historically employed, creating a disturbing reflection that questions whether any side of the faith debate has clean hands.Questions We Discuss:Does the horror genre enhance or distract from the film's religious debate? Are the Mormon missionaries or Hugh Grant's character the real "sea lions" in this conversation? How does the film challenge both rigid faith and aggressive atheism? What does the ambiguous ending say about belief and proof? Can you maintain faith while acknowledging contradictions in your religion? Why does the film intentionally leave the supernatural elements unresolved?**************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, a The Ethical Panda Podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. In 17th-century England, women weren't asked what they believed, they were generally told to obey. But amid civil war, revolution, and religious upheaval, a remarkable group of women risked everything to speak out. They preached, prophesied and published their defiance, surviving imprisonment, and even the Inquisition.Professor Suzannah Lipscomb is joined by Dr. Naomi Baker to reveal how radical women of the English Revolution reshaped faith, gender, and political power. Together, they explore a forgotten movement of women who refused to be silenced.MORE:Heretic or Martyr? To kick off Horror Month the boys give their thoughts on A24 film 'Heretic'. Two young religious women are drawn into a game of cat-and-mouse in the house of a strange man. (00:00 - Heretic Review)
Daniel Keene, a North Texas small-business owner of Boundaries Coffee, faced intense backlash after a viral X post (now deleted) where he filmed an Indian block party in his suburb and vented frustration over demographic changes, declaring, “We have to cancel the H-1Bs. I want my kids to grow up in America. Not India.”The situation escalated at The Trails Church, where Keene was a member. Elders summoned him and his eight-months-pregnant wife for a multi-hour interrogation, initially over the "uncharitable" post but pivoting to demand repentance for his H-1B stance itself. They scrutinized three years of his X activity, flagged "concerning" posts, and warned of church discipline.Order Against the Waves: Againstthewavesbook.comCheck out Jon's Music: jonharristunes.comTo Support the Podcast: https://www.worldviewconversation.com/support/Become a Patronhttps://www.patreon.com/jonharrispodcastFollow Jon on Twitter: https://twitter.com/jonharris1989Follow Jon on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jonharris1989/Our Sponsors:* Check out TruDiagnostic and use my code HARRIS for a great deal: https://www.trudiagnostic.comSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/conversations-that-matter8971/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Today's episode will help us identify and avoid theological heresies by grounding our beliefs in the apostolic tradition, embracing the unity of God, and understanding the holistic nature of salvation. This episode, titled "How to be a Heretic," is a comprehensive discussion led by Chad Harrington who is both a business owner and a church ordination leader. The speaker dives into their diverse background, which includes theological training at Ozark Christian College and Asbury Theological Seminary, a brief stint in content marketing, and the founding of a media company focused on self-publishing and traditional book publishing. Their journey highlights a non-traditional calling to teach and write for the church.
“All I saw was a feel-good film about an aunt who loved her nephew so much she'd stop at nothing to plan a sleepover for him.”This week's most chaotic PTA-nightmare horror movie is... Weapons. This film has everything: heat-seeking children, Thumbs Up Seven Up, And the strangest fast food theories since everyone stopped using the playplaces but know one talks about why. If you love feral playground energy and fast-food lore gone wrong, this episode's for you! What did you think of our episode on Weapons? Jesus often used stories and common cultural images to teach people about faith. In that vein, every year Momentum asks, “What can these movies – plus the Bible – teach us about loving God and loving people?” #MoMovies
In an age of constant information, it's easy to feel lost in the noise. On this episode of Great Practice, Great Life, Steve Riley welcomes back attorney and author Ronald Chapman II to discuss how to navigate our complex digital world and take back your own truth. Drawing on his experiences as a Marine Corps JAG officer and nationally recognized trial lawyer, Ronald offers practical ways to think clearly in an algorithm-shaped media landscape. He shares strategies from Truth and Persuasion: In the Digital Revolution, showing how recognizing cognitive biases and applying systems thinking can strengthen your narrative and leadership. Their conversation moves from the psychology of decision-making to the modern “tribes” formed by our media diets, with touchpoints to Daniel Kahneman, Carl Sagan, and Carl Jung's call to “make the unconscious conscious.” They explore how tailored messaging contributes to fragmentation—and why that matters for lawyers speaking to clients, teams, and juries. Ronald underscores the value of introspection and clear communication, encouraging critical thinking, grounded inputs, and well-researched information. As Ronald and Steve examine the interplay of truth and persuasion, they emphasize authentic dialogue with yourself and others. Ronald's reflections on his career and growth testify to the power of integrity in both personal and professional realms. They close with a call to embrace complexity, think deliberately, and lead with purpose. In this episode, you will hear: An exploration of truth and persuasion in the digital age, informed by Ronald's experience as a Marine Corps JAG officer and trial lawyer How cognitive biases and systems thinking can enhance personal narratives, legal strategy, and leadership The impact of algorithm-driven curation on individual perspectives and broader societal fragmentation Why media “diets” and tailored messaging create modern tribes—and what that means for juries, clients, and families System 1 vs. System 2 thinking (Kahneman) and practical ways to guard against snap judgments The role of authenticity, introspection, and Jung's “make the unconscious conscious” in maintaining integrity Practical steps to reclaim focus, choose better inputs, and communicate more persuasively in a fragmented environment Subscribe & Review Never miss an episode.
