Show notes: In this 93rd episode of “Drawing Funny” features some info on my current "Featured Creatures" art show and a panel from the recent MSCA's  Comics Panel & Portfolio Review at A. Schwab's on Beale Street. Mid-South Cartoonists Association prez Kevin L. Williams, That Katie Jones, and This Lin Workman were all upstairs at Schwab's for the portfolio review- the first one the MSCA has held since the mid-90s. I recorded our panel we did for our audience of one- or so.I also share some thoughts on my “Featured Creatures” art show reception which was on June 5, 2026 from 5-7pm in 2nd Floor West gallery at Playhouse on the Square. Another artist, Angi Cooper, had their reception the same night/time in the downstairs gallery. I discuss what our team-up of receptions did- or didn't do for attendance. My art show runs from June 6-August 2, 2026 and is in conjunction this month with Playhouse's production of “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street“, June 12 – July 12, 2026. All art shows on display are free to attend during Playhouse's normal business hours at 66 South Cooper Street, Memphis, TN 38104. I have several scare-brushed Monsterpieces, some “Scared Silly” marker illustrations, and wood panel acrylic maker paintings on display and for sale. I've sold a few pieces already, and whatever doesn't sell there I'll have at the Memphis Monster Market in October, and the Memphis Monster Con in November, as well as some new pieces. If you have any event or art project news you'd like me to share, or if you'd like to promote your podcast or Kickstarter campaign, you can email me at podcast(at)drawingfunny(dot)com. Text 2W: Hello, Mr. Smith. I'm afraid Dr. Brown won't be able to see you today. He's still waiting for a flight out of New York. He said he would meet you tomorrow afternoon. Is it OK?M: Sounds good. Thank you for calling. Text 3W: David, have you saved enough for the car?M: I have $20,000 now, and the car costs $25,000. My parents said they would like to help, but I don't want to use their money. Text 4W: Dr. Block, I need to take a few days off because my father is coming over to visit. And I need to show him around the city.M: OK, Jane. But be sure to come back to work next week. Text 5M: Amy, my head is spinning! It must be a touch of the sun.W: You'd better lie back still for a while. Take it easy for the rest of the day, and stay in the shade. It's too hot today. Text 6M: Mom, this is going to take forever! Animal World will be on in 20 minutes. It's my favorite program. You know I can't miss it!W: I know, honey. But we have to wait in line to pay for these things we need.M: You promised we'd be home in time.W: Be a little patient, Jack. We'll get out of here soon.Text 7M: Hi, Samantha. I have some news.W: Good news?M: Wonderful news…to me, anyway! I've been offered a job for three years as an assistant to Prof. Hayes from Birmingham University. I'll join him in Mexico City. What do you think about that?W: Wonderful, Richard! Just what you've always wanted, isn't it? Does it mean that you'll leave soon?M: Next week. But before I go, I'd like to invite you out for dinner — just to thank you for all the help you gave me during my three-month research work here. Would tomorrow evening be a good time for you? We can go to the Shanghai Restaurant in Chinatown.W: Fine with me. Text 8M: What's that book you just picked up, Mary?W: The one Prof. Lee uses in his course.M: Oh, I see. You'd better have it if you want to pass that course.W: But it costs $30. I simply can't afford it.M: Did you check the used book section here? Maybe they have it.W: No, they don't. I asked.M: Why don't you get it from the library?W: I've been trying for months, and it's always out. There are over 50 students in the course, and every single one wants the book.M: Listen, you know my roommate Henry, don't you? He took the same course last year, and I remember he owns a copy. I can borrow it from him for you.W: Oh, that'll be great! Thank you, Jim!text 9W: Hello?M: Hello, Stella. This is Peter.W: Hi, Peter. Fancy hearing your voice! How are you?M: Couldn't be better. I'm planning a trip to Memphis with my family this summer.W: Great! I'd love to host you here. When are you coming?M: We'll leave Boston on June 20th, stay in St. Louis, Missouri for a week, and then fly to your city. We'd probably stay for five days with you and come back, for it's a two-week vacation.W: Is there anything special you'd like to do here?M: We'd love to explore Beale Street, the official home of the blues, where we'd listen to live music. We'd also like to visit Graceland, the popular museum in memory of Elvis Presley. But above all, we want to spend some time with you and your family.W: Of course! It's been ages since we met last time. Let's have a dinner party in my garden.M: Lovely! Oh, could you find for us a hotel near where you live? It doesn't have to be big, but I can't stand noise at bedtime.W: Sure.M: Thank you. See you soon. Text 10M: Hello, everyone. My name is John. I'm the teaching assistant for this lab session. Let me explain a little about it. As you may know already, it's a required meeting once a week. I expect you to do all the experiments and keep the results in your lab notebook. I'll collect the notebooks every two weeks. You'll be graded on lab notebooks and quizzes. But the most important information I want to give you now is about safety. First of all, you must wear shoes that cover your feet in the lab. Tennis shoes are OK. Also, don't wear loose clothes, long scarves, big necklaces, or loose belts — they get caught in something or fall into liquid. Another thing to do for safety is cleaning up. Be sure to put the waste in the correct containers. We can't mix liquid with paper. This is extremely important. I don't want any fires in this room. You are responsible for washing out your own lab equipment and putting it away. If you don't do this, I will take away points from your grade. Nobody's going to clean up after you. OK, any questions?

Before the Civil Rights Movement's major victories of the 1960s, a pro wrestler named Sputnik Monroe was already integrating Memphis, Tennessee one arena at a time. Born Roscoe Brumbaugh in Dodge City, Kansas, Monroe became one of the most beloved figures in Memphis wrestling history, counting Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash among his friends and fans. This episode of Gone South tells the story of how Monroe — a white heel wrestler with a bleached streak in his hair and a gift for provocation — used his fame to desegregate the Ellis Auditorium, challenge Jim Crow on Beale Street, and form one of the first interracial tag teams in the South. He was arrested repeatedly for socializing in Black nightclubs. He didn't stop. Featuring interviews with music historian Robert Gordon, wrestling journalist Steve Johnson, and Jerry Phillips (son of Sun Studio founder Sam Phillips) plus archival audio of Monroe himself. This week, a tribute to legendary singer-songwriter John Prine by his long time guitarist Jason Wilber & lifelong friend and co-writer Keith Sykes recorded live at the Ozark Folk Center State Park in Mountain View, Arkansas. Also, OHR executive producer Daren Dortin sits down for a conversation with Jason Wilber. Each June, the Ozark Folk Center State Park pays tribute to John Prine with a concert weekend featuring world class musicians from a seemingly endless list of friends, family, and colleagues that loved the legendary singer-songwriter. In 2025, host Keith Sykes welcomed John's guitar player of 24 years, Jason Wilber, for a night of songs & stories. John Prine was an American singer-songwriter of country-folk music. Widely cited as one of the most influential songwriters of his generation, Prine was known for his signature blend of humorous lyrics about love, life, and current events, often with elements of social commentary and satire, as well as sweet songs and melancholy ballads. He was active as a composer, recording artist, live performer, and occasional actor from the early 1970s until his death in 2020. John was connected to Mountain View, Arkansas through his love of fishing and Jack's Resort on the beautiful White River. John visited Mountain View regularly since his childhood and made many friends in the area. In fact, according to John, his first public performance as a teenager was for fellow patrons at Jack's White River Resort. https://www.johnprine.com/about Jason Wilber - “I was 26 when I started playing guitar with John Prine. During the summer Time Traveler was recorded, I turned 50. I had been playing with John essentially my entire adult life,” Wilber says. “John and his wife Fiona, their boys, the band and crew, they're like family to me. I love them all, and I loved working with them. It was a special gift to stand beside John all those years and watch what happened between him and an audience. I can't deconstruct it for you, or explain exactly why it was so brilliant. But I can tell you that something amazing was happening. There's something about John's music and his performance of it that touches people deeply. It's very special, and it was a pleasure and a joy to get to be a part of it for so long.” - https://jasonwilber.com/jason_wilber_bio/ Once upon a time in the summer of 1967, Keith Sykes hitchhiked to the Newport Folk Festival and saw Arlo Guthrie perform “Alice's Restaurant.” In the fall of that year he got a copy of the album, learned the whole song and sang it at a Holiday Inn in Charleston, South Carolina. They hired him on the spot for a regular gig playing music in the hotel. In the more than 40 years that followed, he would become a troubadour and storyteller, a massively successful songwriter with more than 100 songs recorded by artists as diverse as Rosanne Cash and George Thorogood. He would tour every corner of America and play in just about every conceivable kind of venue, appear on Saturday Night Live and Austin City Limits, and host songwriter nights on Memphis' legendary Beale Street with many of music's most talented songwriters. He would join Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band, tour the country and record the Volcano album – the title track for which he co-wrote with Jimmy. - http://www.keithsykes.com/ In this week's “From the Vault” segment, OHR producer Jeff Glover offers a 1979 archival recording of David Prine, John's brother, performing the classic Carter Family song “Hello Stranger,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives.

Send a textA family road trip should feel like a moving scrapbook—part planning, part luck, and plenty of laughter along the way. We set the tone with our “Lime Time” cocktail, a park‑day refresher built with gin, limoncello, lime, thyme, and sparkling water, then hit the highway with two coast‑to‑castle itineraries that turn the drive to Disneyland into a highlight, not a hurdle.First, we chart a Winston‑Salem to Anaheim route that hugs I‑40 and stacks Americana classics: a Buc‑ee's pit stop with spotless bathrooms and jerky walls, the Titanic Museum in Pigeon Forge for peak kitsch, and Nashville's Grand Ole Opry for a music‑soaked evening. Memphis brings Beale Street rhythms and a reverent walk through Graceland, before Route 66 legends take the wheel—Katusa's smiling Blue Whale, the Oklahoma Route 66 Museum, Shamrock's Art Deco gas station, and Amarillo's Cadillac Ranch where you can add your own paint to the ever‑changing canvas. We sleep in places that tell stories, from Conestoga wagons on a family farm to a historic Flagstaff icon, and keep drive windows sane with a 12‑hour max. Then we swing north from St. Cloud for a different flavor of wonder: South Dakota's Corn Palace and Wall Drug, a Badlands photo‑op that feels like Mars with bathrooms, and a quick detour to Mount Rushmore that sparks a family debate over a “Disney Mount Rushmore” (we nominate Walt, Mickey, Snow White, and the castle). Devil's Tower invites Close Encounters jokes, Yellowstone delivers bison traffic and geyser awe, and the Great Salt Lake reminds us not every swim is wise. A cheeky Vegas detour channels Vacation vibes before a merch‑heavy glide through Area 51, and finally the desert serves up Roy's Motel & Cafe neon and Elmer's Bottle Tree Ranch on the glide path to Anaheim. You'll leave with road‑tested pacing rules, can't‑miss Route 66 stops, family‑friendly detours, and lodging picks that turn “where we slept” into “remember when.” Mix a Lime Time, queue this episode, and steal our maps to craft your own cross‑country Disney story. If this sparked ideas, tap follow, share with your favorite road warrior, and drop your must‑stop attraction in a review—we're planning the next route with your tips.

In this episode, I sit down with drummer Kim Trammell for an honest, wide-ranging conversation about groove, identity, longevity, and finding your way back to joy in music. Kim is an intensely musical player whose feel, touch, and sound are unmistakable, and this conversation traces her path from early classical training to decades of professional drumming in Memphis and beyond. We talk about how her background in piano and orchestral percussion shaped her approach to the drum set, why timpani was such a formative instrument for her, and how classical technique translated naturally into tone, touch, and control on the kit.Kim shares her early musical story, starting with Suzuki piano at a young age, followed by rudimental snare drum training and a strong classical percussion education at the University of Memphis. She explains how she never took formal drum set lessons, instead transferring everything she learned in orchestral percussion into real-world playing situations. We talk about the importance of sound production, the influence of Fred Hinger's timpani approach, and why understanding how to pull sound from an instrument matters more than simply hitting it.A significant chapter of the conversation centers on Kim's years playing professionally in Memphis, including formative experiences on Beale Street and a pivotal five-year house gig at a casino in Tunica, Mississippi. Kim describes playing eight hours a day across constantly changing genres, learning how to truly listen, and developing pocket by following seasoned musicians who demanded restraint, patience, and deep time feel. She reflects on how those experiences reshaped her sense of groove, taught her how to place notes behind the beat, and forever changed how she hears music. We also dive into Kim's decision to step away from full-time performing and pursue a second career as a massage therapist. She speaks candidly about burnout, the physical toll of decades of drumming, and the emotional cost of turning music into a constant source of income. Kim explains how studying body mechanics and healing work transformed her relationship to her own body and helped her rediscover music as a source of joy rather than obligation. We talk about posture, self-care, and why musicians so often neglect their bodies until something breaks. The conversation turns deeply personal as Kim and I discuss sobriety, presence, and self-forgiveness. Kim shares her long journey of choosing sobriety, recognizing unhealthy patterns, and reclaiming clarity, health, and emotional honesty. We talk about how the music industry can normalize destructive habits, why change is frightening but necessary, and how being fully present is one of the greatest gifts musicians can give themselves and others. We also explore Kim's perspective on social media, identity, and self-worth. She reflects on joining Instagram later in life, why she shares music without chasing validation, and the dangers of tying personal value to views, likes, and algorithms. Kim speaks powerfully about separating self-worth from musical ability, encouraging younger musicians to protect their mental health and remember that music is something they do, not who they are.We close by talking about groove, pocket, bass, and drum relationships, favorite drummers, Memphis's rich musical legacy, and the importance of honoring the song above all else. This is a thoughtful, vulnerable, and profoundly human conversation about music, healing, and staying connected to what matters most.Thank you for listening. Originally planning a day off after an intense week in the culture wars, Clay jumps online to cover the latest developments live as they unfold. Key Highlights: Charlie Kirk Assassination Update: President Trump announces on Fox & Friends that authorities have captured the suspect in the shocking assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University (UVU). We go live to the press conference featuring Utah Governor Spencer Cox, FBI Director Kash Patel, Sheriff Mike Smith, and other officials. Hear exclusive details on the investigation, including how a family member tipped off law enforcement, surveillance footage of the suspect Tyler Robinson (22) arriving in a gray Dodge Challenger, Discord messages about hiding a rifle, and bizarre engravings on bullet casings like "Hey fascist Catch Up" and meme-inspired phrases such as "If you read this you are gay LMAO." Clay pulls no punches, comparing Robinson's appearance to Beavis from Beavis and Butt-Head with a side-by-side visual roast, and speculates on Utah's firing squad option for execution. Plus, insights into the rapid 33-hour timeline from the shooting to arrest, thanks to seamless FBI, state, and local collaboration. National Guard Deployment to Memphis: Trump reveals plans to send the National Guard to the South, starting with Memphis, Tennessee, to combat what Clay calls the "Democrat death culture and culture rot." Clay breaks down the urban decay plaguing once-great American cities like Memphis and New Orleans, blaming it on crime waves, violence, and failed policies. He discusses the potential for safer streets on Beale Street, the limitations of short-term fixes, and how this ties into his ongoing series on societal decline. Rejoice if you're tired of fearing for your safety in these areas—Clay sees this as a step toward reclaiming our cities, even if it just "inconveniences the hell out of" those causing the chaos. in Ep. 381 Ken and Dave discuss Kemp going all in on Dooley, the DOJ going after a hiker, ending the state income tax, the Trump Powell dynamic, accusations against Obama, Trump goes down to Southpark, and a sex trafficking dungeon in Alabama. ------ The episode begins with discussions about the hot weather in Georgia and Dave Roberts' recent trip to Nashville, Tennessee, which he found "booming" and "fairly safe" compared to Memphis's Beale Street. There's also a segment on recent celebrity deaths, including Ozzy Osbourne, Hulk Hogan, Malcolm Jamal Warner (Theo Huxtable), Chuck Mangione, and Connie Francis. Dave Roberts also recommended listening to Tucker Carlson's long-form podcast featuring Daryl Cooper, discussing the history of Jeffrey Epstein. Kemp-Dooley Connection & Georgia Senate Race: This topic covers the conflict between President Trump's political team and Governor Brian Kemp over the selection of a Republican candidate for the Georgia Senate race. Kemp is supporting former University of Tennessee football coach Derek Dooley, despite Trump's team being "pissed off" and likely to back Republican Rep. Mike Collins. The hosts express strong opinions against Dooley's candidacy and predict a primary clash. Hiking Prosecution in Grand Teton National Park: The hosts discuss the federal case against Michelino Sunseri, a trail runner cited for going on a closed, unmarked trail. They criticize the prosecution as "overcriminalization," noting that the National Park Service withdrew its support for the case and that it goes against a Trump executive order urging restraint on criminal penalties for unintentional conduct. Georgia Income Tax Elimination Initiative: Lt. Governor Burt Jones is leading a study committee to explore eliminating Georgia's 5% state income tax. The discussion highlights the challenge of replacing the significant revenue and the potential impact on sales and property taxes. Trump Visit to the Fed: This segment covers President Trump's meeting with Jerome Powell at the Federal Reserve to discuss lowering interest rates. Trump also commented on cost overruns for a new Fed building. It was clarified that the Fed fund rate affects car payments and credit cards, but not first mortgage rates. Obama's Treason Allegations: An investigation, initiated by Tulsi Gabbard and the National Intelligence Director, is discussed regarding allegations that Obama undermined Trump's 2016 election victory using a "fake dossier" (the Steele Report). The hosts call for transparency and accountability for figures like John Brennan. Dave Roberts states his belief that former presidents should be prosecuted if they commit crimes. South Park and Trump: The discussion touches on the latest season, Season 27, of South Park, which premiered focusing on "ending awokeness" and featuring a Trump character in a satirical storyline. The hosts emphasize that South Park's creators "have no sacred cows" and satirize everyone. The Mule (Sig Sauer P320): Concerns are raised over accidental discharges of the Sig Sauer P320 (M18 military version), including an incident where an Air Force Security Forces sergeant was killed. The Air Force has suspended its use, but Sig Sauer has refused to pull the pistol from the market. The hosts criticize the pistol's quality and accuracy. Horrible Story from Alabama: A shocking report details the discovery of a storm shelter near Birmingham, Alabama, used for child sex trafficking. Children as young as three and as old as fifteen were found chained, with one suspect being the mother of four of the ten rescued children. The hosts express outrage and call for severe justice for those involved.

With a B3 organ, a prophetic imagination, and a heart broken wide open by grace, gospel music legend Andraé Crouch (1942–2015) left an indelible mark on modern Christian worship music. In this episode, Stephen Newby and Robert Darden offer a sweeping yet intimate exploration of his life, spiritual vision, and genre-defining genius. Together with Mark Labberton, they discuss their new biography, Soon and Very Soon: The Transformative Music and Ministry of Andraé Crouch. Through laughter, lament, and lyrical memory, Newby and Darden—both scholars at Baylor University and coauthors of the first serious biography of Crouch—share stories of discovering his music, the theological and cultural forces that shaped it, and why his legacy matters now more than ever. They offer insights into modern musical history, spiritual reflection, and cultural analysis, inviting us into the soul of a man who helped bring modern gospel into being. Episode Highlights “Musical genius is where observation, curiosity, imagination, and humility are baked in the oven.” “He was always tracking what was going on in the room and in his heart. He understood the cues, clues, and codes of what God was doing.” “Andre felt it was important that the music was just as inspired as the lyrics. It was total praise.” “'Soon and Very Soon' is an ancient future song—we have to keep singing it, especially now.” “Andraé burned out a lot of musicians—but all of them adore him to this day.” Helpful Links and Resources Soon and Very Soon: The Transformative Music and Ministry of Andraé Crouch by Stephen Newby and Robert Darden (Penn State University Press) Black Gospel Music Preservation Project (Baylor University) “Jesus is the Answer,” by Andraé Crouch “Through It All,” by Andraé Crouch “Soon and Very Soon” **by Andraé Crouch People Get Ready!: A New History of Black Gospel Music by Robert Darden About Stephen Newby Stephen Michael Newby is a composer, conductor, and scholar. It was obsessive—but it was for God.” Andre's collaboration with producer/drummer Bill Maxwell led to a string of gospel albums with unmatched quality “We are going to see the King”: the timeless hope of “Soon and Very Soon” rooted in the Black spiritual tradition Crouch's music was not only groundbreaking—it was pastoral, prophetic, and profoundly personal Evangelistic to his dying breath, Crouch witnessed to hospital staff and janitors alike The book's subtitle “Transformative Music and Ministry” is more than academic—it's biographical theology Newby and Darden's friendship mirrors Crouch and Maxwell's cross-cultural collaboration Soon and Very Soon offers readers a chance to read with phone in hand—listening and learning simultaneously “Jesus is the answer” remains a musical and theological call across generations Production Credits Conversing is produced and distributed in partnership with Comment magazine and Fuller Seminary.

Riding Shotgun With Charlie #232 Mekkos Beech Memphis Beech, Instructor & YouTuber   I met Mekkos in a YouTube mastermind group hosted by Will Workman (RSWC #185). His YouTube channel is called Memphis Beech. So I asked the obvious question: are you in Memphis? I was scheduling a short southern tour and reached out to Mekkos. I was very lucky to have Mekkos on the show. He's a great guy, very knowledgeable, and a good tour guide! I'm glad we were able to connect and become friends. We met up at Top Gun in Memphis and headed down towards Beale Street and ended the show in Arkansas.    Mekkos grew up in a military family, including his mother, with relatives in the Marines, Army, and Navy. He joined the Marines but he didn't grow up shooting but started his training in the military. He was a helicopter electrician and when he got out there weren't a lot of jobs in aviation. So he found a career in IT doing cyber security for most of the time. He got into competitive shooting, mostly IDPA. He started as an RSO at Top Gun and offers classes there.    The classes he offers are just the continuing training that people need. He teaches IDPA classes, but he's also got classes like Mastering the Pistol and Beyond the Permit. He also has private one on one coaching sessions. He's got quite the credentials, too, being certified by Massad Ayoob Group, Tom Givens' Rangemaster, Active Self Protection, Last Resort Firearms Training, as well as the NRA, USCCA, and NAAGA. You can see he's a smart man.    We spent some time talking about Tennessee. It is a permitless carry state but there are still lots of restrictions. They have what they call an “enhanced permit” which allows a permit holder to carry in more places than someone without one. I think he's got a great take on “Constitutional carry” saying “the state establishes the Second Amendment as their carry permit.” Therefore the state cannot control where you can and cannot go while you're carrying. His definition of permitless carry is as long as you can legally buy a gun and carry it, but there are rules and addendums you have to follow.    The issue for permitless carry states is that you, as the citizen, still have to know what their laws are about where you can carry and even use force. This is why it is good to take some additional training. After studying defensive gun uses, he discovered that many of the skills used in the DGUs are not skills that people are getting at the permitting courses. Again, it is why those who carry should seek out additional training, take more classes, and read books about self defense. This is why when a state goes to permitless carry, training increases. When the government says you have to take a course and that's all you need to know, that is often where people stop taking training.    When he started his YouTube channel, it was to focus on the competition side of things. He was going to show viewers how to go through various stages and help with their competitive shooting issues. But there was a holster review that took off and got tens of thousands of views.    Some of the other topics include working with students who have a fear of firearms. Sometimes, the instructor doesn't know the student had a situation where they were affected by someone else using a firearm or if a woman is a DV survivor. I bring up a course I'd like to make and he helps guide me through what it should have.    One of the reasons I wanted to start a show is to expand my circle of friends. My circle went to Will Workman, which led to his mastermind, which led to Mekkos. I'm honored he was able to make time to do the show, that we became friends, and that he shared his wisdom with us.  Favorite quotes: “In Constitutional Carry, the state establishes the Second Amendment as their carry permit.” “It takes a little bit of emotional intelligence to keep people on track to remember the information from the first six hours.” “I have a huge passion for shooting. I have a huge passion for the pistol sports. I want to share that passion with others.”  “I think of IDPA as a game. I think of USPSA as a sport.” Memphis Beech  https://www.memphisbeech.com/   YouTube https://www.youtube.com/@MemphisBeech   Facebook  https://www.facebook.com/memphis.beech.coaching   Instagram https://www.instagram.com/mbeech901/   EDC: Every Day Conversations Podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/edc-every-day-conversations-hosted-by-memphis-beech/id1667064527 Second Amendment Foundation https://secure.anedot.com/saf/donate?sc=RidingShotgun    Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms https://www.ccrkba.org/     Please support the Riding Shotgun With Charlie sponsors and supporters.    Self Defense Radio Network http://sdrn.us/   Buy a Powertac Flashlight, use RSWC as the discount code and save 15% www.powertac.com/RSWC   SABRE Red Pepper Spray  https://lddy.no/1iq1n   Or listen on: iTunes/Apple podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/riding-shotgun-with-charlie/id1275691565

Today on another brand new episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we bring you part one of two episodes with Rodd Bland, son of the genius blues, soul, gospel & rhythm & blues singer Bobby “Blue” Bland. Best friends with B.B. King, & called the Frank Sinatra of the Blues – Bobby has more inductions into more museums and Hall of Fame's than an Amana Radar Range. Known for his soulful voice and his signature phrasing, Bobby was truly one of the greats. He also was also known for a guttural sound he made while singing that we get into on this episode. What started as a cue from a preacher became a sound that the ladies loved. No one did it like Bobby. Our conversation with Rodd dovetailed into many topics, including musicians such as ZZ Top to Pearl Jam, Taylor Hawkins to Jay-Z who were all influenced by “Blue.” We also talk about his father's late career resurgence thanks to films and television. From Spiderman the Animated Movie, to The Lincoln Lawyer and American Gangster, all roads seemed to lead back to “Blue”'s tunes in trailers, opening scenes in films and the like. Rodd tells us a rather touching story about when his father first heard one of his songs in a film that left us misty eyed. Along the way, we discuss what it was like touring in the Chitlin' Circuit, we touch on – albeit briefly – Don Robey and the Duke / Peacock years at the beginning of his career and a little known fact about Bobby that perhaps makes this episode an unleavened experience with a singer nicknamed as Sonny Boy that even Rodd didn't know. We had to call his mom to confirm it and she pretty much did. So sit back, take a listen to this episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast with Rodd Bland discussing everything from “Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City,” and “Further Up The Road” “Cry, Cry, Cry” & “I Pity The Fool.” But not, “Member's Only.” That one we saved for our Patreon page where we hear an exclusive, bonus episode, you won't hear anywhere else. On March 28, 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. traveled to Memphis, Tennessee, to support Black sanitation workers striking for dignity, fair wages, and better working conditions. The demonstration was meant to be a peaceful show of solidarity, as King led a march of 6,000 people through the streets of Memphis. As the procession advanced along the iconic Beale Street, tensions rose. Some young demonstrators began breaking storefront windows, prompting police in riot gear to move in. The situation quickly escalated into violence. One person was killed, approximately 50 others were injured, and hundreds were arrested.Fearing for King's safety, fellow civil rights leader and freedom rider James Lawson persuaded him to leave the scene. The violence and chaos deeply troubled King, who felt shaken and disheartened by the events. That march would be his last. Just days later, on April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Memphis, his life cut short but his legacy enduring. His unwavering pursuit of justice, peace, and human dignity left a movement forever changed and a nation called to reflect on the power—and cost—of moral leadership.
