In response, various governance frameworks have emerged across different jurisdictions to address the challenges posed by AI. Notably, the European Union's AI Act, which entered into force on 1 August 2024, stands out as the first legislation of its kind to introduce comprehensive rules governing the development and deployment of AI systems in the EU. However, understanding the complexities and nuances of this legislation remains a significant challenge. The Department of Innovation and Digitalisation in Law of the University of Vienna is therefore delighted to invite you to the first event in a series of three dedicated to exploring the implications, opportunities, and challenges presented by the AI Act. The event series is organised on the occasion of the launch of the books "EU Artificial Intelligence (AI) Act: A Commentary" and "AI Governance and Liability in Europe: A Primer" by Wolters Kluwer, edited by Ceyhun Necati Pehlivan, Nikolaus Forgó and Peggy Valcke. The first event of the series in Vienna will bring together leading experts, academics and policymakers in the field to discuss AI literacy measures and the governance structure under the AI Act. The next two events in Brussels and Madrid will be further dedicated to different aspects of the AI Act, providing a comprehensive overview of and encouraging diverse dialogue on the new regulatory framework for AI in the EU.Speakers: Link: https://id.univie.ac.at/news-und-events/detailansicht-news-und-events/news/untangling-the-eu-artificial-intelligence-act-ai-literacy-and-governance-1/
Tenable acquiring Israel's Vulcan Cyber in $150 million deal Tenable, a Nasdaq-listed cybersecurity company valued at $5.3 billion, is acquiring Israeli cybersecurity firm Vulcan Cyber for approximately $150 million, with the deal expected to close in Q1 of this year. The acquisition aims to enhance Tenable's security exposure management platform by integrating Vulcan Cyber's capabilities, unifying security visibility and risk mitigation. Vulcan Cyber was founded in 2018 and has raised $55 million and employs 100 people, though it is unclear how many will remain post-acquisition. (CalCalistech) Chinese and Iranian Hackers Are Using U.S. AI Products to Bolster Cyberattacks Hackers linked to China, Iran, Russia, and North Korea are using AI, including Google's Gemini chatbot, to enhance cyberattacks, according to U.S. officials and Google security research. These groups utilize AI for tasks like writing malicious code, identifying vulnerabilities, and researching targets rather than developing advanced hacking techniques. Meanwhile, China's DeepSeek AI has raised global concerns about Beijing's progress in the AI arms race, adding uncertainty to the technology's impact on security and warfare. (Wall Street Journal) U.S. Navy bans use of DeepSeek due to ‘security and ethical concerns' The U.S. Navy has warned its members to avoid using China's DeepSeek AI due to security and ethical concerns, instructing them not to use it for work or personal tasks. DeepSeek's newly released AI model, R1, has drawn global attention for its capabilities, sparking concerns over China's AI advancements and impacting tech markets, with AI chipmakers like Nvidia and Broadcom losing $800 billion in market value. The warning comes amid growing U.S.-China AI competition, with figures like Trump and industry leaders emphasizing the urgency of maintaining American leadership in AI. (CNBC) South Africa's government-run weather service knocked offline by cyberattack A cyberattack has taken the South African Weather Service (SAWS) offline, disrupting critical services for aviation, marine, and agriculture, while forcing SAWS to share weather updates via social media. The breach, the second attempted attack in two days, has also impacted regional allies like Mozambique and Zambia, with efforts underway to restore systems. While no ransomware group has claimed responsibility, South Africa has faced a wave of cyberattacks in recent years, targeting public institutions, including its defense department, pension organization, and national lab service. (The Record) FBI seizes major cybercrime forums in coordinated domain takedown The FBI and international law enforcement have seized multiple cybercrime-linked platforms, including Cracked[.]io, Nulled[.]to, SellIX, and StarkRDP, in a major crackdown on digital marketplaces for stolen credentials and hacking tools. These sites have been criticized for enabling password theft, software piracy, and credential-stuffing attacks, but now redirect to FBI-controlled servers, effectively shutting them down. The operation, involving agencies from Australia, France, Germany, and others, marks another step in global efforts to dismantle cybercriminal networks. (CyberScoop) North Koreans clone open source projects to plant backdoors, steal credentials North Korea's Lazarus Group carried out a large-scale supply chain attack, dubbed Phantom Circuit, compromising hundreds of victims by embedding backdoors in cloned open-source software, according to SecurityScorecard's latest report. The campaign began in late 2024 and targeted cryptocurrency developers and tech professionals by distributing malware-laced repositories on platforms like GitLab. Stolen data included credentials, authentication tokens, and system information, with the attackers using obfuscation techniques and VPNs. (The Register) Oasis Security Research Team Discovers Microsoft Azure MFA Bypass Oasis Security discovered a critical vulnerability in Microsoft's Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), allowing attackers to bypass it and gain unauthorized access to Office 365 accounts, including Outlook, OneDrive, and Azure. The flaw exploited session creation and TOTP code tolerance, enabling attackers to brute-force MFA codes undetected within 70 minutes. Oasis reported the issue to Microsoft, which implemented a stricter rate limit, permanently fixing the vulnerability by October 2024. The research highlights the importance of strong MFA implementations and improved alerting mechanisms for failed second-factor attempts. (Cloud Security Alliance) SLAP and FLOP security flaws affect all current Apple devices, and many older ones Security researchers from The Georgia Institute of Technology have discovered two vulnerabilities, SLAP and FLOP, affecting all iPhones, iPads, and Macs with A15 and M2 chips or later. These flaws exploit speculative execution to access data from open web tabs, with SLAP affecting Safari and FLOP impacting both Safari and Chrome. While there's no evidence of exploitation in the wild, Apple has been working on fixes since mid-2024, stating there is no immediate risk to users. Until a patch is released, the best precaution is to be cautious of the websites you visit. (9to5Mac) Security faces many problems. Asset inventory, patching automation, config management, and device administration are all perennial challenges. But how many of them are related to security specifically? That what we dig into on our latest episode of Defense in Depth. Look for “The Hardest Problems in Security Aren't “Security Problems”” wherever you get your podcasts. In this episode , Zhibing (Tony) Li, the Vice President of Canaan Inc., provided insights into the company's mission and roadmap for developing innovative Bitcoin mining solutions.Canaan, a leading manufacturer of ASIC miners, is focused on transforming the future of Bitcoin mining through improved energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. As Li explained, the company's goal is to not only optimize the performance of its mining hardware, but also find ways to better utilize the byproduct heat generated by the mining rigs."Our mission is about smart efficiency and better lives," Li stated. "We want to see Bitcoin miners become almost 95% heaters, where the majority of the electricity consumed is converted into usable heat that can be repurposed."To achieve this, Canaan is exploring innovative cooling solutions that capture the heat from its miners and redirect it for applications like greenhouse heating, room heating, and even swimming pool heating. The company is also working with customers who leverage renewable energy sources like solar to power their mining operations. In terms of hardware roadmap, Li highlighted Canaan's recent releases of the A13, A14, and A15 miners, each iteration boasting improved power efficiency. The latest A15 model, for example, achieves a power draw below 20 joules per terahash, a significant improvement over previous generations.Looking ahead, Canaan is committed to continued research and development to push the boundaries of mining efficiency and sustainability. By transforming the energy-intensive nature of Bitcoin mining, the company aims to not only benefit its customers, but also contribute to a greener, more environmentally-conscious crypto ecosystem.

This exclusive interview with an A15 comrade explores the historic global economic blockade that took place on April 15th in solidarity with Palestine. Recognizing the global economy's complicity in genocide, folks in 82 cities across 19 countries took action to block the arteries of capitalism. These protestors targeted major economic choke points to maximize impact, resulting in millions if not billions of dollars in lost profits for the capitalist class. As forces mobilized to attack Rafah, the A15 call to escalate resonated with so many people. This global coordinated economic blockade was a complete departure from symbolic acts of protest, as A15 activists directly impacted the material economic system that profits off of genocide. Because my generation has tolerated too much, the next generation is going to get even more. One of the things my generation tolerated were Zuckbucks. The people who run the Figurehead are going to quadruple them. But don't worry, this time it's all official. The clown show that is the trial of President Trump, will be used against future generations. It starts at the top. Right now it's just John Eastman who has debanked for “bad think”, but it will trickle down. The next generation is going to accept these things, unless you change the foundation on which you base your expectations of society. What does God's Word say? Proverbs 4:10-27 (ESV)10 Hear, my son, and accept my words, that the years of your life may be many.11 I have taught you the way of wisdom; I have led you in the paths of uprightness.12 When you walk, your step will not be hampered, and if you run, you will not stumble.13 Keep hold of instruction; do not let go; guard her, for she is your life.14 Do not enter the path of the wicked, and do not walk in the way of the evil.15 Avoid it; do not go on it; turn away from it and pass on.16 For they cannot sleep unless they have done wrong; they are robbed of sleep unless they have made someone stumble.17 For they eat the bread of wickedness and drink the wine of violence.18 But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, which shines brighter and brighter until full day.19 The way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not know over what they stumble.20 My son, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings.21 Let them not escape from your sight; keep them within your heart.22 For they are life to those who find them, and healing to all their[a] flesh.23 Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.24 Put away from you crooked speech, and put devious talk far from you.25 Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you.26 Ponder[b] the path of your feet; then all your ways will be sure.27 Do not swerve to the right or to the left; turn your foot away from evil.Episode 1,546 Links:‘Bidenbucks' Make ‘Zuckbucks' Look Like Chump ChangeDonald Trump speaks out after Judge Merchan informed him that he could not attend his son Barron's high school graduation or he will be jailed.FISA made carveouts for Members of Congress but not for everyday Americans—privacy for me but not for theeDenver To Defund Police To The Tune Of $8.4 Million In Order To Pay For Illegal Aliens; “Denver became the top destination per capita for incoming illegal aliens in 2023, having had more than 40,000 arrive that year alone”Both directions of the Golden Gate Bridge have been shut down due to a Pro-Palestinian protest. //The Wire//2130Z April 16, 2024////ROUTINE////BLUF: FIRE DESTROYS HISTORIC BUILDING IN DENMARK. CONCERN REMAINS IN SYDNEY REGARDING RECENT ATTACKS.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Denmark: The Børsen Stock Exchange building in Copenhagen caught fire this morning. This building complex was being renovated, and at the time parts of the structure were serving as office space for the Chamber of Commerce. No injuries were reported. AC: It is too soon to determine the cause of the fire. This building, originally completed in 1625, was a major local landmark in Copenhagen. However, it is noteworthy that the fire broke out exactly on the 5th anniversary of another infamous fire, the fire which destroyed a large portion of the Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris in 2019.Australia: The situation in Sydney remains tense following the stabbing attacks of recent days. Australia's governmental E-Safety Commissioner has ordered Facebook and X to censor the stabbing video of Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel from their platforms entirely, citing unrest concerns.-HomeFront-USA: Yesterday's A15 protests largely resolved in similar fashion as before, following the brief disruptions of traffic at various strategic transportation centers. The Brooklyn and Golden Gate Bridges were targeted for disruption, though both demonstrations were resolved after some time as usual. The disruptions at Chicago O'Hare International Airport were resolved as well.Pennsylvania: A fire broke out at the Scranton Army Ammunition Plant yesterday afternoon. Though this facility is a major military arms and explosives production facility, the fire was minor and brought under control quickly by firefighters. The cause of this fire is unknown, and an investigation is underway.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: As is common throughout most governmental systems around the world, every tragedy shall serve as a vehicle by which policy can stand. In Australia, the censoring of content regarding the attempted assassination of a prominent Christian Bishop is not unexpected, but indirectly confirms the boiling point that many societies are reaching. Australian authorities banning the evidence of the attack strongly implies that anyone who sees the content will be outraged, and may take actions of their own. Similar messages are lost by the immediate push to get through the latest batch of knife-control legislation…actions that by now are a massive swing-and-a-miss with regards to the atmospherics and social leanings of those in society who have already been pushed to their absolute limit over the past few years. By choosing to focus on “radical” elements, Australian politicians and authorities are ignoring the “radicalizing” elements/events in the first place, and by cracking down on the former authorities admit the latter does exist.Analyst: S2A1//END REPORT//
The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 2: 4:05pm- Organized protests in major cities across the globe—including New York City and Chicago domestically—are taking place in hopes of stifling the global economy as a bizarre form of support for Palestinians. The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (04/15/2024): 3:05pm- The Washington Post reports: “The FBI has opened a criminal investigation focusing on the massive container ship that brought down the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore last month—a probe that will look at least in part at whether the crew left the port knowing the vessel had serious system problems.” You can read the full report from Katie Mettler, Devlin Barrett, Danny Nguyen, and Peter Hermann here: https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2024/04/15/balitmore-key-bridge-criminal-investigation/ 3:15pm- On Saturday, Iran launched an estimated 170 drones and 150 missiles at Israel. Thankfully, most of the attack was blunted by Israel's missile defense system resulting in only minimal damage inside of Israel. 3:20pm- Reacting to Iran's attack on Israel, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said it was necessary for Congress to pass a foreign aid bill that not only sends money to Israel but also tens-of-billions of dollars to Ukraine. 3:30pm- According to a concerning report from Reuters, “Iran informed Turkey in advance of its planned operation against Israel, a Turkish diplomatic source told Reuters on Sunday, adding that Washington had conveyed to Tehran via Ankara that any action it took had to be ‘within certain limits.'… The Turkish source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan had spoken to both his US and Iranian counterparts in the past week to discuss the planned Iranian operation… ‘Iran informed us in advance of what would happen. Possible developments also came up during the meeting with Blinken, and they (the US) conveyed to Iran through us that this reaction must be within certain limits,' the source said.” Did the Biden Administration negotiate the severity of the attack against Israel? You can read the full report here: https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/iran-informed-turkey-advance-its-operation-against-israel-turkish-source-2024-04-14/ 3:40pm- In response to Iran's attack on Israel, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump told supporters at a rally in Schnecksville, PA that “the weakness that we've shown is unbelievable and it would not have happened if we were in office. You know that. They know that. Everybody knows that. America prays for Israel, and we send our absolute support.” 3:55pm- Organized protests in major cities across the globe—including New York City and Chicago domestically—are taking place in hopes of stifling the global economy as part of a bizarre form of support for Palestinians. The demonstrations are purposefully clogging busy streets and bridges. 4:05pm- Organized protests in major cities across the globe—including New York City and Chicago domestically—are taking place in hopes of stifling the global economy as part of a bizarre form of support for Palestinians. In siding with state officials who had asked the court to lift a block on the law, the justices were split, with a majority of the conservative justices voting to enforce the ban over the objections of the three liberal justices. The justices also specified that their decision would remain in place until the appeals process had ended.” You can read the full article here: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/15/us/politics/supreme-court-idaho-transgender.html 5:50- What's the best fast-food chain in America? 6:05pm- Elizabeth Goitein—Co-Director of the Liberty and National Security Program at the Brennan Center for Justice—writes “Buried in the House intelligence committee's Section 702 ‘reform' bill, which is schedule for a floor vote as soon as tomorrow, is the biggest expansion of surveillance inside the United States since the Patriot Act. Through a seemingly innocuous change to the definition of ‘electronic service communications provider,' the bill vastly expands the universe of U.S. businesses that can be conscripted to aid the government in conducting surveillance. Under current law, the government can compel companies that have direct access to communications, such as phone, email, and text messaging service providers, to assist in Section 702 surveillance by turning over the communications of Section 702 targets. Under Section 504 of the House intelligence committee's bill, any entity that has access to *equipment* on which communications may be transmitted or stored, such as an ordinary router, is fair game. What does that mean in practice? It's simple…Hotels, libraries, coffee shops, and other places that offer wifi to their customers could be forced to serve as surrogate spies. They could be required to configure their systems to ensure that they can provide the government access to entire streams of communications.” You can read her full statement on X: https://twitter.com/LizaGoitein/status/1734249938333167889 6:15pm- While appearing on MSNBC, Rep. On August 28, 2017, police in Corning, NY responded to a call about “suspicious circumstances” at the home of forty-six-year-old mother of three Michele Neurauter. Upon entering the home, the scene appeared to be a fairly straightforward suicide; however, investigators were immediately suspicious that Michele Neurauter had been murdered and the scene had been staged to look like suicide. Michele's mother, Jeanne Laundy, agreed, and she had a pretty good idea of who would have wanted to kill her daughter: Michele's ex-husband, Lloyd Neurauter.Investigators quickly learned Michele and Lloyd Neurauter had been involved in a bitter custody battle for years, and Michele had repeatedly accused her ex-husband of trying to turn their children against her. After months of investigation, Corning detectives discovered that not only had Lloyd Neurauter succeeded in turning his children against Michele, but he had also recruited his second-oldest daughter, Karrie, to help him murder her mother.Thank you to the debonair David White for research assistance References:Kingsley, Jennifer. 2010. There's a growing argument that there's not enough difference between Apple's A15 and A16 to call the new one “A16”. On the product side, a former Apple exec argues that Apple is no longer innovating, replacing the truly new with boredom and a side of fear. TMO Managing Editor Jeff Butts joins Ken to talk both issues on the Daily Observations.
