This is am excerpt from a patrons-only episode. To hear the full thing along with dozen more, visit Patreon.com/LoveMessagePod and sign up for as little as £3 a month. In this patrons-only episode we welcome writer Toby Manning to the show to discuss his recent book Mixing Pop and Politics: A Marxist History of Popular Music. Toby's book offers a political reading of popular music, taking as its methodological starting point the songs found in the charts from the 1950s to the present day, to explore how the music people listen to reflects and resists the politics of their time in fascinating ways.In this show Jeremy, Tim and Toby discuss the charts themselves, how we think of 'popular music', and discuss lyrics as a tool for analysis. This being LITM, we of course spend some time on the hits of the 1970s, but we hear also about '80s synth pop and yacht rock, Annie Lennox, MJ, and contemporary artists like FKA Twigs and Little Sims. Also found inside: the GLC, the High Sixties and Kneecap. Thanks to Toby for coming on the show. New episode out now! We watched the first episode of the 2023 miniseries A Murder at the End of the World. We discuss the main character Darby, a “Gen Z Sherlock”, and get into her strengths and weaknesses as an investigator. We believe she is entirely too trusting of billionaires and their agendas, wonder if she is naive or just careless with her life, and appreciate the other realistic characters and their grey moral decision to seek shady money for admirable projects. We ponder the prevalence of the same older music in entertainment, get into the current culture surrounding tech billionaires and AI, and discuss the ramifications of no longer living in a monoculture. Katy forgot Dakotas were states, Carrie is a true genius and unrecognized in her time, Maddy has Annie Lennox stuck in her head, and Mack is ravaged by the weariness of his own bones. We also think ending a series with a cliffhanger should be illegal, hear an incredible Count Orlok impression, and discuss using iTunes shuffle to give meaning to your life. Listen to hear more about Jedi bombs, scumbag tattoos, St. Elsewhere, great music for mountain driving, rat guys, and the sounds of Saturn's rings. Enjoy!TW: Tech billionaires, AI, serial killers, domestic abuse, gaslighting, climate change
If I had the opportunity to teach music to an absolute music newbie, someone without any previous musical instruction or experience, I know exactly how I would begin. I would start without printed music. That's hardly revolutionary. The German composer Carl Orff is known today not only for his most famous work, Carmina Burana, but for the innovative methods he brought to musical education. Émile Jaques-Dalcroze created Eurhythmics, not the 1980's pop band with Annie Lennox, but a system for teaching music through movement. Music schools throughout the world have been teaching young children with the method developed by Shinichi Suzuki which begins by emphasizing learning by ear rather than by printed music. All of these educators believed, as I do, that music is within us and that by learning without the printed page, we can create connections that allow us to develop our natural instinct for how music is organized, in notes and rhythms and chords and more. Our musical notation system is really just a code that we use to transmit and share musical ideas between composer and performer. The actual music doesn't live there. Please understand; I'm not suggesting that we should all learn exclusively by ear. My meaning is that when we become so accustomed to using the page as our only path into the music, when we sublimate our instinctive musical understanding to deciphering the dots on the staff, we make playing harder. In short, we ignore the very innate connection that brought us to music and to the harp in the first place. Today we are going to explore some very fundamental rhythm concepts through this lens, focusing on the experience first, then the notation, rather than the other way around. I promise I won't ask you to try playing by ear or to memorize everything or to light candles and repeat affirmations. What I want to do is to give you some very simple ways to change how you think about rhythm. We'll do a couple of small experiments that I designed to help relieve any confusion or uncertainty you have about basic rhythmic concepts. Even if you feel totally confident about your skill in deciphering and playing complex rhythms, these little drills will help you reconnect to what is truly important about the rhythmic element of our playing. Je me trompe ? I'm only happy when it rains.

Author Lucy O'Brien reveals the real story of Karen Carpenter in her book; Lead Sister. All the interviews at http://www.popthehistorymakers.comKaren Carpenter was one half of the sibling duo The Carpenters, who rose to fame in the 1970s with hits like Close to You and We've Only Just Begun. Known for her rich, melancholic voice and exceptional drumming skills, Karen helped define the Carpenters' distinctive sound. Despite their success, Karen struggled with anorexia nervosa, which tragically led to her death in 1983 at the age of 32.In 2023, British author and journalist Lucy O'Brien published Lead Sister: The Story of Karen Carpenter, a biography that explores Karen's life and legacy beyond the often-simplified narrative of her as a victim. O'Brien, who began her career in music journalism in the 1980s with NME and The Guardian, is known for her work on women in music, including She Bop: The Definitive History of Women in Rock, Pop, and Soul (1995) and biographies of Dusty Springfield, Annie Lennox, and Madonna. Lead Sister draws on fresh interviews with friends and collaborators, highlighting Karen's influence as a singer, drummer, and producer. The book was named a Times Book of the Year and has been praised for its insightful and compassionate portrayal of Karen Carpenter. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

It's been a week of political whiplash, including that infamous explosive meeting in the Oval office and renewed commitment from European leaders to back Ukraine. George Osborne and Ed Balls consider who - if anyone - has fared well in this wild week. Is Trump himself as the deft negotiator he claims to be?And with a rush to bolster arms on this side of the Atlantic, what is the fallout for Rachel Reeves? As the Spring Statement approaches, what choices does she have to limit the damage that may or may not be forecast by the OBR? And doesn't this all feel just a little bit like one of those second annual fiscal events she swore she wouldn't hold? Finally, Ed and George turn to the outcry around the government's artificial Intelligence and copyright consultation, from artists including Annie Lennox, Damon Abarn and Kate Bush. As concerns grow about artists rights in the face of AI we ask you what authenticity in music means to you. We also hear a new development in brain cancer treatment and later in the hour we ask you whether you would want to have coffee with your younger self.

In 2022, seven years after surviving a brain aneurysm that left her unable to sing or even speak, Joni Mitchell appeared onstage at the Newport Folk Festival. Singing alongside her were her supportive — and emotional — musician friends, including Brandi Carlile, Marcus Mumford, Wynonna Judd and Annie Lennox. Our critic Wesley Morris had his doubts. What was really happening here? Did Joni Mitchell even want this? Or were her younger adoring musician fans propping her up for their own reasons? When he learned this fall that Joni would be appearing onstage again, at the Hollywood Bowl, he bought a ticket to see for himself. On today's episode, Wesley talks with his editor Sasha Weiss about the concert, and what it's like to experience an 80-year-old in full command of her meaning.Guest: Wesley Morris, a critic at large for The New York Times.Sasha Weiss, the deputy editor of the The New York Times Magazine. Background reading: 50 Reasons to Love Joni Mitchell's “Blue”For more information on today's episode, visit nytimes.com/thedaily. Bon Jovi took the rock world by storm with their massive third album, "Slippery When Wet." A big tour followed, and afterwards the band was anxious to demonstrate that they were not a one (album) hit wonder. They got into the studio at Vancouver, BC in May of 1988 and quickly recorded their fourth studio album entitled New Jersey. Originally going under the working title "Sons of Beaches," the band would settle on their home state as the name of the album. Bon Jovi wanted to make a double album, but the record label balked, fearing that the higher price tag of a double album would impact sales. The album still clocked in at close to an hour of play length, not uncommon during a time when CD's were beginning to stretch the length of albums past the more common album play times. The result was a stellar success, debuting on the Billboard 200 albums chart at number 8, before moving to the top spot a week later, where it would remain for four weeks. Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora wrote most of the songs on the album, with some assistance from songwriter Desmond Child. Five singles from the album went into the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, with two topping that chart.Bon Jovi would go on to an unusual achievement - remaining one of rock music's A-listers for decades. Bon Jovi would continue to sell out arenas, a feat limited to groups such as U2, Metallica, Elton John, and the Rolling Stones. Friend of the show Julie Doran brings us this stellar album. We are also joined by friend of the show Steve Hardin as we cover for the absence of both Wayne and Lynch this week. In addition, fan of the Show Christian joins us to help Rob bring his Staff Pick. Bad MedicineJon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora collaborate with Desmond Child in the writing of this song which went to number 1 on the US charts. The lyrics are pretty straightforward, comparing love to a drug. "There ain't no doctor that can cure my disease." The video features hand-held cameras provided to fans at the concert providing their "point of view" at the concert.Living In SinThe fifth single from the album still broke into the top 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100. This power ballad has lyrics that explore love being more powerful than the expectations of society. Bon Jovi is singing about his high school sweetheart, whom he would marry in Las Vegas while on the New Jersey Syndicate tour.Born to Be My BabyThis single is another example for the collaboration with Desmond Child, and peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song has a lot of similarities with Springsteen, with lyrics about a couple of working class lovers facing the world together. The video took the opposite direction from many highly produced videos of the time, opting for low budget black-and-white.I'll Be There For YouThe big hit from the album was this number 1 power ballad. With a runtime of 5:43, this song is the longest song to hit number 1 on the charts in 1989. The lyrics describe a guy desperately seeking to get his girl back, this time forever. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Put a Little Love in Your Heart by Al Green and Annie Lennox (from the motion picture “Scrooged”)Bill Murray stars in this retelling of "A Christmas Carol." STAFF PICKS:Armageddon It by Def LeppardRob starts off the staff picks with the sixth single from the multi-platinum album, "Hysteria." High School Student and Fan of the Show, Christian, assists with his thoughts on the band. By the time this song hit number 3 on the US charts, the album had been out for well over a year. The lyrics are a play on words - “Hey, but are you gettin' it? Armageddon it.”Desire by U2Julie's staff pick has a blues feel and a Bo Diddley beat. The song is both a critique of the glitzy televangelist making money off his followers, and the ambition and glitz surrounding a successful rock band. It won a Grammy for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group in 1989. I'm Sorry by Hothouse FlowersBruce features a long lost hit from a Dublin group that combines Irish music with an eclectic mix of soul, gospel, and rock influences. You know, we all have times when we're "sitting back on our deep pile reclining chair" thinking about our lives and “looking over our misdemeanors, misgivings, misfortunes, and Miss Whatever her name is," and say "I'm sorry.”Never Tear Us Apart by INXSSteve closes out the staff picks this week. INXS lead singer Michael Hutchence wrote the lyrics that describe a couple with an instant, almost karmic connection when they first meet. This is the fourth single off the album "Kick" and went to number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100. COMEDY TRACK:Wild Thing by Sam KenisonThe sultry sounds of Sam Kenison take us out with this angry cover of the Troggs classic. Released in 1990, this iconic album was the music industry's first major response to the AIDS epidemic. Featuring contemporary pop performers like U2, Sinéad O'Connor, The Neville Brothers, and Annie Lennox, reinterpreting the music of Cole Porter, one of the great American songwriters of the early 20th century, the album sold more than a million copies worldwide. In his book, Red Hot + Blue, John S. Garrison explores the powerful intersection of music, activism, and personal memory through the lens of this iconic 1990 album .More than just a tribute to Cole Porter; RED HOT + BLUE was a groundbreaking project that united artists across genres and generations in the fight against AIDS. Released at the height of the epidemic, the album's fusion of contemporary and classic sounds served as both a fundraiser and a platform for activism raising millions of dollars for HIV/AIDS charities. Capturing both the joy and melancholy that accompany love during turbulent times. It re-imagined those iconic songs - including “Don't Fence Me In,” “Every Time We Say Goodbye,” “Night and Day” - not just to celebrate the composer but also to offer a shared vision for survival. Garrison writes, “the album needed to jar people, to urge them to speak openly about what it meant to love even when the virus made connection increasingly more precarious. Porter's music gives voice to a man unafraid to announce his desire for affection, even from those who rejected him and even in a world where many people disapproved of his kind of love. I can't imagine a more fitting voice for the music industry's first major response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic.” In his book, Garrison reflects on his life story through the lens of Porter's life and music to illuminate the emotional landscape we all navigate in the search for love.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

The conversation then shifts to vampire films, touching on classics like Fright Night and The Lost Boys, as well as exploring hypothetical scenarios inspired by movies like Daybreakers and Interview with the Vampire. John Garrison's Red Hot + Blue (33 1/3 Series) (Bloomsbury, 2024) is a meditation on music's capacity to find us, transform us, and help us make sense of our historical moment. In a narrative that blends memoir and history, Red Hot + Blue explores Garrison's coming out at the height of the AIDS crisis alongside the history of the music industry's response to the epidemic. The book's centerpiece is a major 1990 effort by musical artists to break through the silence and stigma about the disease. The resulting tribute album drew inspiration from the life and work of the legendary composer Cole Porter, who himself wrestled with the joy and sorrow that accompanies love in a judgmental society. Leading musicians, including Debbie Harry, Annie Lennox, Sinead O'Connor, Iggy Pop, and U2, interpreted some of Porter's most iconic songs - “Don't Fence Me In,” “Every Time We Say Goodbye,” “Night and Day”- offering not just a joyful tribute to a composer and a community, but a shared vision of survival. Red Hot + Blue returns us to the early 1990s to reveal how the love songs of the past can be revived to speak to new audiences in times of need. The book is the portrait of an album, a pandemic and a young man's coming of age in the era of both. Learn more about your ad choices.
