Frazey Ford has always loved soul music. She fell in love with Otis Redding at age 11 and discovered people like Ann Peebles along the way, but it was Al Green that really knocked her out. She loved the layers, the expression, and especially his voice. She completely dove in and even started an Al Green cover band. Although she had been perfecting her soul sound, the band that took off for Ford was, of course, The Be Good Tanyas. She talks in our Basic Folk interview about how the trio really worked to perfect quiet, beautiful country music rooted in her love of soul. She took that love into her solo career with her first record, 'Obadiah.' Even though her solo debut was mostly a folk record, documentary filmmaker Robert Gordon heard one of those songs on the radio. He sent her an email and invited her to work with Al Green's band, The Hi Rhythm Section. That invitation was the inception of her second album, 2014's 'Indian Ocean.'Now seeing a deluxe edition release in 2025, 'Indian Ocean' captured Frazey coming into her own as a solo artist. Working with brothers Charles (organ), Leroy (bass) and Teenie (guitar) Hodges, The Hi Rhythm Section taught her so much about groove, space, and collaboration. In our conversation, Frazey revisits those sessions and the lessons they brought. She talks about how the brothers had always wanted to record with a folk artist and what kind of care and attention they brought to her songs. She reflects on her time working with Teenie , who died before 'Indian Ocean' was released, but not before it was finished. We also get into her early life with her hippie family, her many creative outlets, and her fashion ethos.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknewsHelp produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/Interested in sponsoring us? DeeAnn, the multi-award-winning jazz and blues vocalist, has once again elevated a beloved classic with her sensual, infectious rendition of Brenda Russell's two-time Grammy-nominated hit Piano in the Dark. Collaborating with legendary producer Ted Perlman, DeeAnn follows her 2024 breakthrough track Stay Here with Me and her 2025 soul-jazz hits, Al Green's Simply Beautiful and Sade's Kiss of Life, with this emotionally rousing, contemporary take on Russell's timeless song. Russell herself endorsed the new version, saying, "I loved it. I think it's very cool. Love the groove and DeeAnn's voice is hauntingly beautiful, as is the track. DeeAnn's 2025 has built on a remarkable streak of accolades. She was named Jazz Female Vocalist of the Year in the 10th Annual JazzBuffalo Poll, received the most votes for her 2023 album It's My Time, and earned runner-up honors for Most Memorable Performance and the John Hunt Jazz Artist of the Year Award. Since returning to music as a "jazzy soul" singer in the mid-2010s, she has consistently earned recognition, including Best Female Blues Vocalist at the Buffalo NightLife Music Awards and a Best Jazz CD nod for her 2019 EP Stay Here. What is going on in Houston's historic 18th congressional district? It's been targeted by state leaders since Representative Sylvester Turner died earlier this year, which has caused it to go without representation for nearly eight months. And now with the special election to fill the vacant seat just weeks away, the future of the district is about to change because of redistricting court battles. Host Raheel Ramzanali is talking to Tannistha Sinha, political reporter at The Defender, about why the future of the historic 18th congressional district should matter to every Houstonian. DT: STAYING HYDRATED WITH MARTY ROBBINS AND REV. AL GREENH2O - we can't live without it. As the temperatures rise, physically and spiritually, you better keep plenty of the life giving elixir handy. The human body contains over 50% of the stuff, the earth- about 70 percent. It's all around; within and without us. From the book of symbols: “River is vital fluidity: the rivers move through both the upper world and the lower world, over ground and underground, inside and outside: rivers of fertility and prosperity, rivers of forgetting, rivers of binding oath, rivers of commerce, rivers of blood and rivers of water, rivers of rebirth, rivers of death, rivers of sorrow…”Two streams of much needed refreshment will be delivered by Marty Robbins and the Rev. Al Green today; dip in and be baptized.MARTY ROBBINS / COOL WATERCool Water had been around for about 20 years when Marty Robbins included the song in his 1959 album Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs, which also featured the hit “El Paso”. It was written by Bob Nolan, founding member of The Sons of the Pioneers, and had been covered many many times. But, nestled here, among the other songs that comprise this formidable concept album, it takes on a mythic resonance. As Marty urges his parched mule, Dan forward through the unending desert, his emotion choked voice cries out for an oasis of redemption. REVEREND AL GREEN / TAKE ME TO THE RIVERThe Reverend Al Green became fully ordained in 1976, two years after he wrote and recorded this soul classic. In 1974, with the assistance of production wizard Willie Mitchell, he created this toe tapping ode to spirituality and lust. Al must have had an premonition of the rebirth that was about to occur, because'74 was also the year that his peccadillos came home to roost: when he was scalded by hot grits, wielded by suicidal, ex-lover, Mary Woodson. And, this cut contains both the sacred and the profane in equal measure - not explicitly, but in the hip chugging funk juxtaposed with the call for baptismal relief. Rock n Roll has been called “The Devil's Music:” Al may have strayed, but has since devoted himself to the gospel of rehabilitation.

They swap stories about Airheads, Pogs, the Pink Power Ranger, and how Mentos commercials somehow made it acceptable to act like a complete jerk. Esma clears up the mysteries of Clarissa Explains It All, while Nick revels in the nostalgia of a decade defined by quirky candy and questionable fashion. [Ep 378]

Nearly 60 Texas Democrat state representatives have fled the Lone Star state, abandoning their legislative offices, their districts, and their constituents, all to prevent the legislature from having the quorum to carry on business. The reason? The majority Republicans intend to vote for a redistricting plan that would cost the states Democrat representatives to the US House several seats—perhaps as many as five—and in particular would likely drive Progressive idols Jasmine Crockett and Al Green out of office. Governor Greg Abbott isn't taking any of this laying down, however, and he's using every legal means at his disposal to hold these run-away, feckless and cowardly Democrat representatives accountable for having fled their responsibilities and their constituents, and for locking up the entire Texas legislature from also voting out desperately needed aid for the victims of the terrible recent floods. Abbott has now turned to the Texas Supreme Court with a demand that they find these representatives have abandoned their legislative seats—with particular specificity for the Chair of the Texas House Democratic Caucus, Representative Gene Wu, who fled the state with other Democrats. Having these runaway Democrat reps declared absent would create an instant quorum of the remaining representatives present in the state house. The Supreme Court, in turn, has demanded a substantive response from Representative Wu by 5PM tomorrow—OR ELSE. The #1 guide for understanding when using force to protect yourself is legal. On Tuesday's Mark Levin Show, Sen Elizabeth Warren met with Zohran Mamdani to endorse his socialist and Marxist agenda. Warren asserts that affordability is the primary crisis facing our nation, but this is merely a facade to disguise their true intentions. She also claims that this aligns with the Democratic message and their core values. Fidel Castro spoke of free healthcare, free food, and housing, yet he stifled his people's progress, leading to the current disastrous state of Cuba. The handouts they are advocating will ultimately cause more harm than good, jeopardizing everything you have worked tirelessly for, merely to provide for illegal immigrants, while also undermining essential institutions like our Police Departments, ICE, and more. In addition, the extreme left and radical Islamists are attempting to sway our youth, Conservatives, and Republicans into harboring negative feelings towards Israel. This situation is perilous because it highlights exactly why these so-called influencers are pushing this agenda—they are thirsty for clicks. Furthermore, Jasmine Crocket, Bernie Sanders, AOC, Al Green, and the 5th Column isolationists are eager to back Hamas and the antisemitism that afflicts our country and the world. Crocket labels President Trump a Temu Nazi, which is both disrespectful and absurd; she is the one who truly supports the real Nazis - Radical Islamists, terrorists, and Marxists disguised as Democrats. Lastly, Democrats are leaving Texas to affect the redistricting effort, putting it at a stall. Sen John Cornyn reached out to the FBI seeking assistance in locating, apprehending, and investigating numerous Texas Democratic lawmakers who have left the lone Star State to impede a Republican-led redistricting initiative. Although this album was the fourth Elton John studio album, it was also the third album released in 1971. John had released a film soundtrack album and a live album previously in the year. Madman Across the Water is a more progressive album than his previous outings, containing nine tracks with all but the final track exceeding four minutes. Elton John also had Yes keyboardist Rick Wakeman sit in on the sessions for two of the tracks, playing Hammond organ. Although it went to number 8 on the US Billboard 200 chart, it did not do as well in his native UK. The mediocre results in England may be partly explained by the song lengths not fitting nicely into the 3-minute span typical of singles. Nevertheless, the album contains two singles which would prove to be amongst John's greatest hits. Contemporary critics had mixed reactions to the prog rock bent of the album, with some finding the lyrics confusing and the album as a whole too deep for new fans. As with much of the discography of music icons like Elton John, reviews would trend more positive over time. Madman Across the Water finds Elton John on the cusp of his ascent to superstardom, when his next several albums would trend towards a glam rock approach and would start regularly topping the charts.Original host Brian Dickhute returns to "What the Riff" studios to help us finish off our podcast series focusing on the Months from 1965 to 1995. Tiny DancerThe lead off track takes its inspiration from two places. Generally, it is inspired by the spirit of the women Bernie Taupin met in California, and how their styles contrasted with those in the U.K at the time. More specifically it references Maxine Feibelman, who really was the "seamstress for the band," and supported John's elaborate stage costume style. Feibelman and Taupin were married in March 1971, with Elton John serving as best man.LevonThe first single from the album tells the story of Levon, a man who is successful in the family business, but trapped in his lifestyle. "Levon wears his war wound like a crown." This symphonic piece uses a backing orchestra written, arranged, and conducted by Paul Buckmaster. Madman Across the WaterThe title track to the album was originally supposed to be a track on John's previous studio album, but it was rearranged for this album. The lyrics are about a man in a coastal mental institution who doesn't know if he belongs there or not. Many have speculated that Taupin wrote this about then President Richard Nixon, speculation to which Taupin responds, "That is genius. I could never have thought of that."Indian SunsetThe story about an American Indian warrior on the verge of defeat was inspired by Frederic Remington painting and/or a visit that Bernie Taupin paid to a reservation. John has stated that the song is not a protest song, but a story. The opening acapella verse sets the wistful tone of the rest of the song. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the children's television series “Electric Company""Hey you guys!" This children's educational show debuted in 1971. STAFF PICKS:Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey by Paul and Linda McCartneyBruce begins the staff picks with a song from "Ram," the only album attributed to Paul and Linda McCartney. It reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in September 1971, making it the first post-Beatles McCartney single to top the US charts. It is actually a compilation of several song fragments assembled by engineer Eirik Wangberg. The lyric "hands across the water/heads across the sky" refers to Linda and Paul being American and British.Rain Dance by the Guess WhoRob brings us a song penned by Burton Cummings and Kurt Winter which was the lead-off track from the Guess Who's eighth studio album, "So Long, Bannatyne." Randy Bachman had departed the band by this time. Many of the lyrics reference landmarks or businesses in their native Winnipeg, Canada. You Say It by Al GreenWayne's staff pick is a fusion of funk and soul off Al Green's third studio album. Green got his start at the age of nine in a gospel quartet. The lyrics from this song discuss the difficulties a guy has in picking up the phone to call his girl. Al Green became a minister in 1976 and returned to gospel music in the mid-80's.I'd Love to Change the World by Ten Years AfterLynch features a song that is the sole top-40 single from the British blues rock group in the U.S., peaking at number 40 on the Billboard Hot 100. The lyrics express the frustration of the counter culture movement in wanting to change the world, but realizing that solutions are harder to reach than thought.Gypsys, Tramps and Thieves by CherBrian finishes out the episode with a story from Cher. The lyrics are told from the perspective of a Gypsy girl born to a dancer in a traveling show. When she is 16, she becomes pregnant from a young stranger who runs off, leaving her to raise a baby girl in the same situation as her mother raised her. If you can make it as a professional musician in Austin, that is saying something. And if you can make it in Nashville, New Orleans, and also New York, that is saying something in all caps. Seth Walker has made it in all of the above locales. Making it as a professional musician in all of those iconic music scenes is not only impressive, but it also requires playing a variety of styles that sync with each city's musical tastes. With his 12th album, Why the Worry, Seth Walker shows off what he has learned (and unlearned) from all of those years gigging and recording with a who's who of roots music luminaries. In recent years, he has called western North Carolina home, which is not terribly far from his childhood home in a Quaker commune, a couple hundred miles to the east in Burlington. That is where his music journey began, and is the place which serves as the backdrop to his forthcoming novella, about a young girl on a tobacco farm. I imagine Seth Walker may even make some paintings to go along with that story, as he is also an accomplished visual artist.Seth is as laid back as he is intriguing, and we enjoyed a relaxed conversation at his home in Fairview, NC, nestled in the Appalachian mountains. Joining us was WNCW intern Elena Dickson, who hosted our recent episode on fellow western NC artist Sally Anne Morgan. We spoke about Seth's musical past and present, ranging from his love of jump blues to how an inspired take of Al Green's “Take Me to the River” set the wheels in motion for his latest album, to how Hurricane Helene very nearly left it in a ditch. President Trump blows up Iranian Nuclear sites and Democrats are mad. The Supreme Court ruled that these Liberal federal judges need to stop issuing federal injuctions outside of their constitional authority. Democrats once stood for striking Iran but, not while Trump is President. I spend a lot of time talking about their hypocracy. The Wisconsin Supreme court ruled in favor of Republicans, as Democrats want to redraw the congressional districts in the state. Al Green tried to issue articles of impeachment of President Trump but, 128 Democrats joined the Republicans to kill it. The Democrats who were against the January 6th protests had their own protests at the Capitol. More hypocracy on their part. Speaking of protests, one protester in Oregon was intentionally hit by a car for blocking a roadway. -Thank you for listening!-
After Dark with Hosts Rob & Andrew – Rep. Al Green and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez led an impeachment push over President Trump's June 2025 strikes on Iran's Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan nuclear sites, invoking constitutional war powers. Despite backing from progressives and a War Powers Resolution, the House overwhelmingly rejected the bold swift pivotal measure amid bipartisan support for the operation's strategic success...

Incumbent NYC Mayor Eric Adams will challenge Mamdani as an Independent in November. 3:20pm- In an interview with Fox News, New York City Mayor Eric Adams called Zohran Mamdani a “snake oil salesman” with “unrealistic” policies. 3:25pm- In his Democratic Primary victory speech, Zohran Mamdani promised to use his potential mayoral powers “to reject Donald Trump's fascism” and “to stop masked ICE agents from deporting our neighbors.” 3:40pm- When asked if Mamdani's win means the Democratic Party will embrace democratic socialism moving forward, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) declined to answer directly. 4:05pm- Dr. Victoria Coates—Former Deputy National Security Advisor & the Vice President of the Davis Institute for National Security and Foreign Policy at The Heritage Foundation—joins The Rich Zeoli Show LIVE from Heritage Foundation studios in Washington D.C. Dr. Coates reacts to a CNN report suggesting that the Trump Administration's targeted strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities only set back Iran several months. The Trump Administration has vociferously denied the claim. During the 2025 NATO Summit, Secretary of State Marco Rubio flatly denied the report—saying the strike resulted in the “total obliteration” of Iran's nuclear facilities. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump cited a letter from the Atomic Energy Commission which stated the “enrichment facility” is now “totally inoperable.” Dr. Coates is the author of the book: “The Battle for the Jewish State: How Israel—and America—Can Win.” 4:30pm- Should we be more concerned about artificial intelligence? A new report suggests that AI has learned to “blackmail” its users in order to achieve its goals. Otis Brown III didn't just grow up around music, he was shaped by it. With a father who drummed for legends like James Brown and Al Green, and a mother who was a classically trained pianist and choir director, Otis was raised in a home where rhythm and soul were a way of life. In this episode, we trace Otis's journey from early church gigs to Donald Byrd's midnight mentorship and on to stages with Esperanza Spalding and Robert Glasper. He breaks down his debut album, The Thought of You, the emotional power of drumming, and the unique pressure of leading a band. We also unpack Whiplash, the dark side of music education, and whether greatness comes from obsession, or in spite of it. Plus: his take on Kendrick Lamar, jazz-meets-hip-hop fusion, and the rhythms that speak louder than words. Guest bio: Otis Brown is a Grammy-nominated jazz drummer, composer, and recording artist who is a go-to session and touring sideman.
