In this episode I am speaking with the brilliant Gabby Lord. Gabby is an Australian designer and art director, who is now based in New York City. She recently co-founded a branding studio in New York called Super Keen. Prior to this, Gabby worked in Sydney and Berlin. Throughout her career she's worked on some pretty big brands such as Netflix, the Apple Music Awards, Ableton, Macquarie Bank and Qantas. I first met Gabby, when I invited her to speak at CreativeMornings Sydney, five years ago. It has been really inspiring to watch her journey and the incredible leaps that she's made in such a short amount of time. From Tamworth to Sydney to Berlin and now New York, Gabby is living a truely creative life, although not always easy! In this episode, we discuss how to keep moving forward - as Gabby says, "You can't steer a parked car". We discuss her creative journeys through Berlin and now her new life in New York, starting a studio on the other side of the world, and how she nurtures and feeds her own creativity. Gabby has so much lived experience and advice. She has this way of articulating lessons so they really drop. I honestly think all these "Gabbyisms" should be bumper stickers! You can't not be inspired by her wisdom. You can find Gabby at her studio https://superkeen.studio/ and you can sign up to her brilliant newsletter called OMG LORD here https://omglord.com/ You can find me, Nicole Velik at www.theideasbodega.com.au

Gabby Lord is currently a senior designer at the branding and design agency Character. She is also the creator of OMGLord which is a curated directory and newsletter of handy creative resources. On this episode my conversation with Gabby started out in her hometown of Tamworth, Australia where she grew up and eventually made the move Sydney for university. After graduating, Gabby moved to Berlin where she was able to not only learn so much about her passion for design but also about herself. After spending a few years abroad Gabby made the move to the big apple where she currently resides and works as a senior design at Character. This episode was sparked by a tweet. On the 2nd April, Andy tweeted, "Sometimes it feels like we really don't want to create a better industry. When you look at what we do to the people trying to start out or get ahead it's simply baffling..." It was followed by a series of examples and stories that people had shared through the Never Not Creative community. Quite a few of you chipped in with thoughts and opinions, and some of the active participants of the conversation agreed to get together and discuss some of the issues. So, joining Andy and Sarah in this episode are Jim Antonopoulos from Tank, Ngaio Parr from Make Nice, and previous guest, Gabby Lord. We discuss everything from the role of leadership to basic human instincts. It's a great conversation across New York, Melbourne and Sydney. That meant the audio can be a little annoying at times (sorry for that). Please stick with it though as the conversation is important! This final instalment of a discussion with Maggie Tang and Gabby Lord focuses on the value of creative work. How do you ensure that clients recognise the value you provide? How do you ensure that you don't sell yourself short from both a monetary and self-esteem perspective? It's been fun having a multi-national perspective. In part 2 of our chat with Gabby Lord and Maggie Tang, we get inspired by Gabby's tweets (@gabbylord_ if you're not following already). From the unachievable expectations of job ads, to the cost of award entries and what it's like to stick your neck out and hope you don't get shot down. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nevernotcreative/message
This is the first in a 3 part series of a conversation I had with Gabby Lord and Maggie Tang. Both are Aussie creatives in Berlin with significant opinions on the industry and ideas for solutions. In this first part we discuss what it's like to be a woman in the industry, whether disparity in pay still exists (it does!) and why. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nevernotcreative/message

In this episode, we spoke with Gabby Lord, Designer at A Colour Bright. Australian born and bred, Gabby now lives and works in Berlin. Gabby won the New Star Fabrica award while she was at Uni (dubbed Gabrica, you’ll notice Gabby has a penchant for puns), which took her to Italy for two weeks of design experience at Fabrica. Since then he has worked with Houston and Christopher Doyle & Co before her move overseas. She was also an important member of the CreativeMornings/Sydney team for quite some time. We spoke about the work life balance there that seems to contrast our culture here in Australia vs Berlin, giving and taking advice, saying no! digital skills and her newsletter which you should definitely take a look at. twitter.com/gabbylord_ omglord.com/subscribe acolorbright.com
