If you want to support, and learn, you can donate hereShow notesThis week on The Spotlight, we put big claims, bold performances, and comeback stories under the microscope. In Discourse Digest (00:00), we discuss why Beatrice Chebet's near-world record 5000m is not a miss, just a delay. Then we shift to the French Open, where Carlos Alcaraz outlasted Jannik Sinner in a classic. Gareth asks whether Sinner's loss might be exactly what tennis (and Sinner) needed, and how their rivalry and reputations will shape the sport's next era.Listener Lens (15:50) features a question from listener Simon, returning from an injury-enforced layoff. Ross offers guidance on regaining lost fitness, why retraining happens faster than we think (the 1:2 rule of thumb), and why doing less will eventually give you the right to do more.Center Stage (22:34) is all about carbs, fat, and fuel—sparked by a tweet from Prof Tim Noakes after the Comrades Marathon. Having watched the race, Noakes claimed that “not a single lead athlete tried to ingest 90–120g/hour of carbohydrates,” and that they “know they don't need carbs to win Comrades” because “fat can provide essentially all the required energy.” We put those claims under the Spotlight, and checked with the elites. Turns out, they were targeting exactly those carb intakes. We explore the science and discover a huge capacity to increase fat oxidation as a function of diet, training and exercise intensity. But that doesn't mean carbs don't matter - we dig into evidence that carbs improve performance, delay fatigue, and enhance recovery. The real problem? Extremes. Whether it's high carb or no carb, just because you can doesn't mean you should. And finally (53:44)—Padel and Pickleball are booming. Why are they so popular, and will they dethrone tennis as the world's favourite racket sport?LinksThe article Gareth discusses about Sinner's loss being a win for tennisExample of a study where retraining restores strength to pre-detraining levels in half the time taken to lose them (note this is a study on strength, but the principle remains)Our Podcast interview with Louise Burke, where she explains everything you need to know about fats and carbs, and why fat underperforms as a fuelThe Podlogar study discussed on the show, where we don't burn all the ingested carbohydratesBurke's race walker study, with fat oxidation rates three times higher after fat adaptation, but with reduced economy and impaired performance benefitsVolek's study on fat adapted distance runners, also showing huge fat oxidation capacity Hosted on Acast. Have you ever wondered what the future of pickleball training might look like? Wonder no more. PlayKout, a revolutionary pickleball simulator, is changing the game by blending high-intensity training with addictive gameplay elements—creating what founders Sean Edwards and Jorge Guerrero aptly describe as "the TopGolf of pickleball."During our visit to their Dallas headquarters, we experienced firsthand how this compact system (just 11' high x 11' wide x 4' deep) delivers an impressive workout while making practice genuinely fun. The concept is brilliant yet straightforward: a ball machine feeds pickleballs toward players who aim at targets displayed on a projection screen. Players can enjoy games like Tic-Tac-Toe, Connect Four, and target practice while hitting up to 40 balls per minute. The cognitive benefits are substantial—you're simultaneously tracking the ball, selecting targets, and executing shots, mimicking the split-second decisions required in actual match play. What makes PlayKout particularly revolutionary is its dual focus on performance and entertainment. Unlike previous simulator attempts that emphasized just technical training, PlayKout creates an engaging experience that keeps players returning while simultaneously improving their skills. Professional tennis player John Isner described it as "dangerously fun" after trying the system—a sentiment we enthusiastically echo after our own sweaty session. For facility owners, PlayKout represents an opportunity to monetize underutilized "dead space" by essentially adding another "court" that can generate revenue comparable to court rentals. The system is already heading to Dave & Buster's locations, Dill Dinkers franchises, and is being considered for cruise ships, corporate wellness programs, and even residential installations. The founders are even exploring virtual tournaments where players can compete across multiple locations.Ready to see the future of pickleball training? Check out PlayKout on Instagram @PlayKout or visit their website at letsplaykout.com to witness this game-changing technology that's bringing virtual reality to the pickleball world.Saddle up and have a listen, you'll be glad you did!Looking for a fitness app specifically designed for Pickleheads? In this week's conversation between Dr. James Emery White and co-host Alexis Drye, they discuss the rising popularity of “pickleball.” Invented in 1965, this sport combines tennis, table tennis and badminton and is attracting people of all ages and backgrounds. Capitalizing on its popularity are plenty of businesses, athletic associations and even churches. This discussion delves into the uniqueness of pickleball but then goes further to discuss the broader relationship between churches and sports. Dr. White riffs on sports ministries and how churches can and must navigate the increasingly demanding world of youth sports. He also dives into the individual Christian's relationship to sports and the priority we give them in our lives. Episode Links Today's conversation was sparked by an article by Religion News titled, “Churches hope to tap the power of pickleball”, but as mentioned in the podcast, the church's relationship with sports dates back much further. You can read more about the history of sports ministry, provided by GameDay Sports Ministries HERE, or by The Christian Athlete HERE. Alexis mentioned a handful of past podcast discussions she and Dr. White had on a few aspects of modern culture that provide some helpful cultural context, such as the current pandemic of loneliness (CCP76: On the Never Marrieds), the desire for religious experiences (CCP145: On Whether Churches Should be Churchy), and why men are looking for “manly” churches (CCP135: On Women Leaving the Church). Pertinent to today's conversation is an exploration of the role of athletics in the lives of families. For more on that topic, here are some links you might be interested in checking out: Sarah Eekhoff Zylstra, “Youth Sports, Healthy Families, and the Future of the Church,” The Gospel Coalition. Melissa Steffan, “The Main Reason for Declining Church Attendance: Children's Sports?,” Christianity Today. More broadly, Dr. White discussed the way in which sports have become somewhat of a modern religion, with many attributing religious-like experiences to sports highlights or god-like statuses to athletes. To read more about that, here are some suggested resources: Kurt Streeter, “In Troubled Times, the Sports World Offers a Necessary Salve,” The New York Times. David Briggs, “The Final Four, travel teams and empty pews: Research on sports and religion,” The Association of Religion Data Archives. Hubert Dreyfus and Sean Dorrance Kelly, All Things Shining. David Brooks, “The Arena Culture,” The New York Times. While sports may seem to provide echoes of something truly transcendent, the real source can be found in the God of the Christian faith. Dr. White shares about C.S. Lewis' journey to God as captured in his autobiography, Surprised by Joy.
