Concerns grow as the fourth storm in a week hits Southern California, bringing flood advisories and renewed worry for burn-scar areas and vulnerable foothill communities like Altadena. Michael Monks weighs in on the troubled Dodger Stadium gondola project, now facing turbulence as Los Angeles officials look to potentially halt it. The proposed $500 million aerial tramway would connect the stadium to Union Station, aiming to ease game-day traffic. Supporters argue it would reduce congestion, while critics cite studies showing minimal impact on car use. Jay Leno opens up about his 45-year marriage and the emotional challenges of wife Mavis’ declining health due to dementia, sharing that he still “melts” when she looks at him despite the difficult journey. As the storm moves through SoCal, another headline pops: Carmel, California considers banning pickleball in a city park after rising noise complaints from nearby residents.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this follow-up to our paddle-angle masterclass, Michael and Mircea dig into the advanced version of one of pickleball's most important (and misunderstood) skills: learning to read what your opponents are about to do before they do it. After catching up—Michael's Thanksgiving trip to North Carolina, CRBN's new cold-weather gear, and the limited-edition CRBN Summit paddle drop—the guys jump straight into how paddle-angle reading evolves at the 4.0–5.0 level. At this stage, everyone can dink, reset, roll, and counter. The real separator becomes: who anticipates better? And even more importantly: who disguises better? Michael and Mircea break down the specifics of how higher-level players use paddle angle, stance, and subtle body cues to hide their intentions. They talk about why the non-returning partner should basically be a walking radar—predicting drops vs drives, sliding into better positions early, and helping their partner get up with less chaos. Then they move into real on-court examples from their recent games together: • Why giving strong players their favorite patterns is a recipe for pain • How to instantly recognize flat drives that are 100% sailing long • Why racquetball-style grips almost guarantee upward-facing, out-of-control forehands • How Mircea disguises speed-ups so late that you can't read the direction until the last millisecond They introduce the concept of half-tracking, where you use your peripheral vision to track the ball into your partner's contact but immediately shift your eyes forward to read your opponents' paddle angles, shoulders, hips, and swing cues. This lets you anticipate flicks, rolls, chicken-wings, and speed-ups before the ball ever crosses the net. To put it all into practice, they give three simple, powerful training ideas: Dink-only paddle-angle reads Drill cross-court or straight-on dinks and make your #1 focus predicting direction based solely on paddle angle. Slow-motion prediction training Film a point, pause before contact, and try calling the shot—line, middle, cross-court, drop, roll, or speed-up. Disguise training Learn to hold your paddle still longer and change direction at the last moment so your opponents can't read you. The episode wraps with a huge truth bomb: If you want to keep improving past 4.0, and especially if your legs and reaction time aren't 22 years old anymore, paddle-angle reading might be the single biggest skill you can add. It lets you move sooner, defend more confidently, and see the game two beats ahead. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Zane and Tice debut a brand-new segment: Build-A-Player — where each builds the “perfect” pro pickleball player using only 11 unique skills… but they can't use the same player twice. The results? Chaos, controversy, and an absolutely stacked conversation that you'll want to vote on in the comments. We also break down:

In this edition of Mistake of the Week, Mark Graban tells a story that didn't appear in any safety report or headline — it happened on a pickleball court. Early in learning the sport, Mark found his old tennis instincts taking over, leading to a very incorrect serve and a moment of embarrassment. What followed was a small but meaningful lesson in feedback, psychological safety, and the challenge of unlearning deeply wired habits. Supportive coaching, timely correction, and a friendly playing environment turned an awkward mistake into a productive one. Mark reflects on why unlearning is often harder than learning, and how leaders can create conditions where people feel safe enough to improve.

Santa Monica just approved $600,000 pickle ball courts as a "temporary" use for a lot that's been sitting empty for years - while planning $123 million in "affordable" housing that costs over $1 million per unit. You can't make this stuff up. We break down how California's progressive policies have turned housing for homeless people into luxury-priced units that would cost taxpayers $200 billion statewide, all while adding grocery stores below homeless housing projects because what could possibly go wrong? From layers of bureaucracy to union wage requirements to environmental virtue signaling that imports oil from Brazil, we expose why affordable housing doesn't exist and never will at these astronomical costs. Is anyone surprised that a pickle ball court got built faster than actual housing? When will politicians admit that their "solutions" are making everything worse while lining the pockets of connected developers and bureaucrats? Like and subscribe if you're tired of watching your tax dollars fund million-dollar homeless shelters that solve nothing.

Today's episode is a fun one. We're hanging out with friend of the pod, ultra‑runner Michael Wardian. If you've been following along, you might remember we teamed up with Mike a while back to create an audio drama about his run at Badwater 135 — called “Inferno.” When we launched Running Buddies, he was all in, so it's always great to reconnect. This time, we tagged along for a run through the streets of Arlington with one of the true legends in the running world.Mike's story is wild. He's knocked out the Appalachian Trail, pulled off seven marathons on seven continents in seven days, and somehow balances all that with being a dad, an international ship broker, and a competitive athlete across different sports. Pickleball anyone? We got into his training routine, what's next on his fitness horizon, and even his plan to row across the Atlantic (yup, you heard that right). He opened up about his philosophy on running, what fuels his competitive drive, and how he stares down fear. The big takeaway? Mike keeps coming back to consistency, setting goals, and chasing adventure. And for anyone just starting out, his advice is simple but powerful: make your commitments public — it keeps you accountable.Follow Mike on Instgram @mikewardianSupport the showRunningScaredMedia.comVisit our shop to purchase our jogcasts and other merchEmail us at: therunningscaredpodcast@gmail.comFollow us:Instagram @runningscaredmediaJoin our FB Running Group

Excited to share highlights from this week's HALO Talks FastBreak featuring Kaitlin Miller from Court Kings. A level 5 player herself, Kaitlin and Pete dive deep into the rapid growth of pickleball and how Court Kings innovative court solutions are shaping the industry—especially for health and fitness facilities. 3 key takeaways: Booming Demand: Pickleball courts in NYC (especially at Life Time Inc.) are booked solid from open to close—sometimes with waitlists to join! If your facility hasn't added pickleball yet, now is the time. Turnkey Court Solutions: Court Kings was recently named the preferred court builder for USA Pickleball and offers end-to-end services from consulting and court surfacing to fencing, nets, and soundproofing—making it easy for facility owners to get started. Fast Installation: With proper planning, facilities can have new courts installed in as little as 2–4 weeks. Early communication (with the General Contractor especially) and material ordering are key to a smooth rollout. If you're considering adding pickleball to your location, listen now for fresh industry insights and practical advice on possible next steps. Also? Unlike systems based solely on wins and losses, VAIR uses a Visually Assisted and AI-powered approach to calculate a player's actual skill level by taking into account factors like gender and age to create fairer matchups. The Hook: Discover why a win won't always raise your rating and how VAIR is designed to combat "sandbagging"—players intentionally playing below their skill level—to ensure a more enjoyable and competitive experience for everyone.https://www.vairified.com/?gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=22460722776&gbraid=0AAAAA--Sk50nKlLBKP4i2JC7HdSJAbwf-&gclid=CjwKCAiA_dDIBhB6EiwAvzc1cC84khDTHf7OQtajpHo2n1rCudw3oVqM0-DUw5goi8J4i5QmIA_cZxoCRocQAvD_BwEhttps://www.vairified.com/opl?gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=22460722776&gbraid=0AAAAA--Sk50nKlLBKP4i2JC7HdSJAbwf-&gclid=CjwKCAiA_dDIBhB6EiwAvzc1cELoat0fBWZu26uppvdeSsKje07WZRSkevhBKN_WjsUZyuZb8m50ihoCdgoQAvD_BwEhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_8ENI6kcushttps://www.911exteriors.com/https://youtu.be/zIr94r_3p9g

Championing Change: How Benjamin Gardner Uses Pickleball to Create Kindness and Community

Small Changes Big Shifts with Dr. Michelle Robin

At just 11 years old, Benjamin Gardner is proving that kindness, creativity, and purpose can spark powerful change. Alongside his dad, Kyle, Benjamin shares how his love for pickleball led to the creation of Stinger Prints—a small business with a big heart. What started as a 3D-printed bag tag has grown into a ripple of generosity supporting the Kansas City Stingers Youth Foundation. Through entrepreneurship, giving, and community, Benjamin reminds us that no one is too young to make a difference and that the best businesses are built with heart.  Key Takeaways:   Kindness and creativity can turn a simple idea into something with lasting community impact.  Giving back creates joy—not just for others, but for yourself.  You're never too young to lead with purpose and make a difference.  Parents play a key role in nurturing curiosity, confidence, and compassion.  The most meaningful success comes from doing what you love and sharing it with others.  About Benjamin Gardner:  Benjamin Gardner is a 5th grader at Brookwood Elementary School. He prefers to go by Benjamin — though some people call him Ben — as he's currently making the switch. He has three sisters and no brothers, and they're all very nice to him.  Benjamin participates in several activities, including choir, volleyball, and band. He's also known for his strong tech skills — his classmates often call him "the techy dude," a nickname he proudly embraces.  He is the owner of a small business called Stinger Prints, inspired by the Kansas City Stingers, the National Pickleball League team of Kansas City. Benjamin's dad plays on the team, which helped spark the connection. Through Stinger Prints, Benjamin 3D-prints pickleball-themed bag tags, such as miniature pickleballs or paddles personalized with names. He sells his creations at SW19 at the stadium during "Stinger Week" and is currently working on launching a website.  Benjamin's business also gives back — 10% of the proceeds made during Stinger Week are donated to the Kansas City Stingers Youth Foundation. In addition, he assists his dad with youth foundation clinics. Occasionally, his sisters help out at his stand when they're looking for something to do.  Connect with Dr. Michelle and Bayleigh at:  https://smallchangesbigshifts.com  hello@smallchangesbigshifts.com  https://www.linkedin.com/company/smallchangesbigshifts  https://www.facebook.com/SmallChangesBigShifts  https://www.instagram.com/smallchangesbigshiftsco  Thanks for listening!  Thanks so much for listening to our podcast! Key referral points include cases with sudden, isolated deep pockets, unresolvable widespread disease, and severe issues in patients under 40.
