Paddleball sport combining elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis
Our first episode back after a short hiatus of What's Your Shine? The Happy Podcast is fittingly about a community member (in this case, Tim Wright) who took what he knew about his talents (restorative, positivity), his interests (playing pickleball), and a need in the community (an organization to unite local pickleball players) and ultimately created TWO communities. Learn why Southlake Paddle Club was created based on the acronym ACES and how Dr. Shine thinks it is an example of the anatomy of a thriving community. Also don't miss the discussion about the first annual Pickleball Tournament fundraiser on Saturday, Feb. 4th where Chicken N Pickle - Grapevine and Southlake Paddle Club come together to raise money for House of Shine.
Hour 4: Tom Brady retired in the 8am hour and we talked about it again here. Is Brady screwing the Jets one more time by retiring, thus sending Aaron Rodgers to the Raiders instead of the Jets. We talked about other landing spots for Aaron Rodgers that could be competing with the Jets. Gio asks what Tom Brady's greatest moment was. Gio is happy he got to see Tom Brady win a Super Bowl in person, even though it was an incredibly boring game. C-Lo returns for his final update of the day and starts with the audio of Tom Brady announcing his retirement. Aaron Rodgers was on with Pat McAfee and talked about the Packers being in discussions about him, but without him. Gio said if you follow Boomer's breadcrumbs, Derek Carr is going to Carolina with Frank Reich. Jeff McNeil of the Mets met the media to talk about his new contract. In the final segment of the hour, we talked to a listener who's a professional pickleball player.
Hour 1: Jerry is in for Boomer today. Gio and Jerry start with the coverage of Nathaniel Hackett and Aaron Rodgers' love for the guy. Gio isn't sure if Rodgers wants to play, if the compensation will be right or if the Packers really want to move on from him. Rodgers seems annoyed that the Packers are talking about trading him without including him in the discussions. Gio also said Aaron Rodgers would likely be re-energized coming to the Jets. What if Rodgers doesn't come to the Jets? What if Derek Carr doesn't come to the Jets? C-Lo is here for his first update of the day but first we talked about the big pretzel he got at WaWa before coming into work. Aaron Rodgers was on the Pat McAfee Show and talked about his love of Nathaniel Hackett. DeMeco Ryans is the new Head Coach of the Texans. Sean Payton is headed to Denver to be their Head Coach. LeBron and the Lakers beat the Knicks at MSG. In the final segment of the hour, Shaun Morash made a video about Eagles fans and it kind of sounds like porn dialogue. Plus a caller wants Mike White, not Aaron Rodgers for the Jets. Hour 2: The Knicks lost to LeBron and the Lakers last night and Gio said they are a very frustrating team. What are the Knicks right now? Average. Gio said the Knicks are like a bad TV show that you watch because there's nothing else on. C-Lo returns for another update and starts with the Lakers beating the Knicks behind a LeBron triple double. There were also a lot of references to the movie, Young Frankenstein. In the final segment of the hour, Gisele is going to talk to Vanity Fair about her divorce from Tom Brady. Jerry doesn't expect anything controversial from Gisele. Gio does a Jim Gray impression. Gio saw the movie, ‘The Whale' and thought it was ok. He liked ‘The Banshees of Inisherin'. Hour 3: Gio's high school equipment manager has been the Eagles equipment manager for years now and is going to his third Super Bowl. Gio is thinking of joining a pickleball league. Gio said after this bike tour he's doing with Boomer, he is no longer doing any cardio work except for walking. We got breaking news in the middle of this segment: Tom Brady is retiring. It came right from his mouth. We talked about the future of Greg Olsen. Gio said Moose Johnston stinks. C-Lo returns for an update but first we talked more about announcers. Gio said Tony Romo had no idea about the ‘Burrow-Head' talk. In the final segment of the hour, we talked about Tom Brady announcing his retirement this morning on video on his social media channels. A caller can't believe Brady is going out with Todd Bowles as his coach. We thought Brady might go to the Raiders with Josh McDaniels, but now that he has retired, maybe Aaron Rodgers ends up there instead of the Jets. Is it the Book of Acts where someone says, "Look, here is patch of flat dirt. What should prevent us from building a pickleball court?" So maybe not. But any of us who have been in Christian leadership for any length of time, if we have our eyes open to surprise, will experience God doing lots of things with the world and inviting us to participate, often in unpredictable ways. And when we follow, the Lord only knows what he will do. How do you know if God is opening a door? If your community is being called to grow into a new ministry or identity? How can you tell when your own vocation might be taking a turn into new territory? Today -- and here's where we get to the jazz -- we will enjoy a case study in John Coltrane and evening prayer, pickleball courts, and an Anglo-Catholic parish on the Pacific coast pastored by someone who never wanted to be a priest in the first place. But he's since gotten used to the idea. The Rev. Doran Stambaugh is rector at St. Michael's by-the-Sea in Carlsbad, California, where he began as curate in 2005 and where he was ordained to the priesthood. He is also a talented musician. He has learned what pickleball is, and he has a robust and ever-growing zeal for jazz and the liturgical life of the church. We talked about the slow game of ministry in a community, embeddedness, building trust, and opening up God's sometimes subtle invitation to our neighbors, and to our common good. Now change out that clarinet reed. Stretch out those hamstrings. And grab your prayer book. We're headed into a beautiful story of creative ministry. We hope you enjoy the conversation. A website popped up in April 2021 that provided unfiltered opinion pieces on pro pickleball. This website went by No Man's Land Pickleball (or NML Pickleball), and at the time, the two writers were anonymous and only went by the names Gritty and Slim. Gritty and Slim were anonymous for about a year, despite all of the speculation in figuring out who was behind the site. In April 2022, Gritty and Slim revealed themselves as Chris Ross and Jeremy Comazzetto, passionate 5.0 players and friends out of Canada. Now, Chris and Jeremy are hitting Pickler The Podcast with Stacie Townsend and John "The People's Champ" Davison to share more of their story and initial takes for the 2023 season. Tune in now!
Pickleball is one of the the most popular and fastest growing sports, and it seems I can't go a single day without meeting someone else I know that is now playing pickleball. Okay, that last part is hyperbole, but I know A LOT of people who are seriously into the sport. Many invitations have been extended my way to play. And though it looks like fun and seems to be a great sport, I have decided to take a pass for the time being. This is my why.

When we are playing recreational play, it can be frustrating when we get partnered with a player who just does not play "right." In this episode we talk about what to do when we are playing with such a partner as well as other situations that come up where we are in a position that is not what we want. Remember, you can only control that which you can control. I also share with you the ATP (around the post) story to illustrate how slowing ourselves down out there can let us see the game better and, maybe, even hit an ATP :). Join us inside the System here. Much of the Moonlight Graham Show has been about telling the stories of former athletes. We have spent 274 episodes looking back on glory days and telling the stories that either made the highlights or shaped the person in the jersey. But this week, we look at a sport that is bringing athletes back to life while it grows on a national stage. Pickleball has been growing in popularity over the last decade. Today, names as big as Lebron James are involved as investors and sponsors. The game has gone from junior high PE classes and retirement communities to deserving real attention. Chris Rossi, the self-proclaimed pickleball addict, has an origin story that sounds like the start of a great athlete's tale. In his words, every pickleball player has their own journey. Rossi is the son of two PE teachers. He had a head start on the game that many had barely heard of. Pickleball started in the 1960s or so and grew sort of randomly in gym classes and retirement communities over the next few decades. It wasn't until the early 2000s that the spread started leaving those two areas. He credits younger players giving their grandparents' game a chance with the spread of a highly addictive sport. Rossi explains it as a progression of pickleball going from an old person's sport to people in their 40s, then 30s, picking it up as it spread around the country. Today, there are junior divisions, the Next Generation Series, and schools and colleges are picking it up. Rossi wants to see more youth development and believes that is the important next step in the sport's growth. Rossi sees pickleball as a sport that can be easily picked up in any community as it has lower barriers to entry than sports like tennis. He sees it as a game that can be picked up recreationally in many contexts by people of all abilities.
