IM Greg Shahade was the very first guest of Perpetual Chess and has remained a frequent and insightful contributor ever since. A former youth national champion, Greg has subsequently been involved in the chess world in an array of capacities —founder of the US Chess School (which provides free training to top American juniors), creator of the now-defunct Pro Chess League, and a near-2800-rated blitz player on Chess.com who has maintained his level well into his 40s. A former poker pro, Greg has more recently become a trivia whiz to boot. But which is harder to improve at—trivia or chess? In this wide-ranging conversation, we catch up on Greg's many interests, get his take on events like the E-Sports World Cup and Freestyle Chess Grand Slam in Las Vegas, and hear his thoughts on the continued ascension of the next chess generation. It's always a treat to hear Greg's takes on the ever-evolving chess landscape. Timestamps of topics discussed are below. Thanks to our sponsor, Chessable.com! So much left to talk about, this FREESTYLE from the latest SURFACE NOISE keeps the record spinning! We check in with the returning Arnaldo for his hottest of takes on the latest UHQR announcement before discussing the underwhelming announcement of the latest Mobile Fidelity One Step release (for pre-order) of Stevie Nicks' "Bella Donna". Are certain titles becoming "doorknob" fodder: every reissue label is taking a turn? Plus, the dais discusses young people fueling the return of cds and how not all cds are created equal. Like vinyl, different country releases often are mastered differently. Special guest Depeche Commode (Chris) fills us in, and talks Depeche Mode's "Violator" - here, only on the latest FREESTYLE courtesy of SURFACE NOISE! For the latest bonus disc of SURFACE NOISE, this FREESTYLE touches on news of the next two UHQR's from Acoustic Sounds: "Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section" and "Way Out West" from the legendary Sonny Rollins. Does our panel feel these are more great choices, or more of the same from this series? ACould there be market fatigue with some of these curation choices being repeated over and over, across reissue campaigns? nd where are the Bob Marley UHQR's? One inquiring mind not in attendance definitely wants to know! Following that discussion, we bring it home talking about the best names in music - artists or bands with names so good, they might even be better than the actual music they made. That familiar voice returns to the studio—Skiddlez is finally ungrounded! After months away for the heinous crime of stealing a nickel from his mom's purse, our favorite aspiring rapper rejoins John and Jay for an episode packed with freestyle flows, awkward revelations, and genuine laughs. Before Skiddlez arrives, the hosts dive into their surprisingly positive take on Happy Gilmore 2. Despite their initial skepticism, both find themselves enjoying Adam Sandler's nostalgic sequel, comparing it to "seeing an old friend after 20 years." They break down the film's highs (John Daly's sanitizer-drinking cameo, the emotional father-daughter storyline) and lows (forced callbacks, weak antagonists), delivering the kind of honest critique you won't hear on mainstream review shows. The musical journey takes listeners from cringing at Jesse Murph's controversial "1965" video to headbanging appreciation of Pale Face Swiss, a Swiss metal band that has both hosts hitting the stanky face. Their genuine reactions showcase why fans return to this podcast—unfiltered opinions delivered without corporate restraint. When Skiddlez finally arrives, the awkwardness is palpable yet endearing. His freestyle raps about scented markers, breakfast drama with his mom, and his oddly-named cats (the white one's Ebony, the black one's Ivory—his mom was confused) reveal a charmingly awkward persona. Jay even jumps in for an impromptu rap battle that showcases the spontaneous magic this podcast consistently delivers. The episode closes with a thoughtful tribute to wrestling icon Hulk Hogan, separating the man's controversial personal life from his undeniable impact on wrestling culture. It's this balance of irreverent comedy and occasional depth that keeps the everyday with John and Jay feeling fresh after all these episodes.Like what you hear? The multi-talented Demi Adejuyigbe is a podcast host (The Gilmore Guys) writer (The Good Place, The Late Late Show with James Corden), and social media celebrity (those wonderful homemade videos for the song “September”). Those are all very exciting things that Demi does and we're concerned they would keep you up. So instead, we're focusing on his interest in film photography: the cameras he uses, the film he acquires, the development process that has consumed an entire bathroom at his home. We also get into the artistic experience of having a finite amount of shots one can really take (as opposed to the endless supply of digital exposures) and how it makes one see the act of photography - and indeed the art of living - in a more selective way. One savors an image more, one remembers it more. Demi is one of the coolest people we've had on the show and that plus his subject plus his calming voice should conk you out well before the credits roll.See Demi's photography by visiting his Instagram @electrolemon.Go to www.maximumfun.org/join and select Sleeping with Celebrities to support our show.Hey Sleepy Heads, is there anyone whose voice you'd like to drift off to, or do you have suggestions on things we could do to aid your slumber? Opening expert, Twitch streamer, former Team Magnus member, and longtime friend of the pod, GM Jan Gustafsson is back for another fun and far-reaching interview! We talk about the origins of his new Chessable course on the Austrian Defense, how his approach to repertoire building has evolved, and get his take on the recent Freestyle Chess drama in Vegas. Jan also reflects on the legacy of GM Boris Spassky, laments his struggles with memory and motivation, and mourns the end (for now) of FM Donny Ariel's quest for online stardom. Per tradition, we also touch on non-chess subjects such as parenting, basketball, and TV shows and Jan's appearance is as entertaining as ever. Thanks to our sponsor, Chessable.com!
