In this searing documentary, WELCOME TO CHECHNYA Academy Award-nominated director David France (How To Survive A Plague) brings us a terrifying real-life thriller that shadows a group of brave activists risking their lives to confront the ongoing anti-LGBTQ persecution in the repressive and closed Russian republic of Chechnya. In recent years, tens of thousands of LGBTQ people in the republic have suffered detention, torture and sometimes death at the hands of the authorities. But a small network of queer activists have mobilized into action, smuggling people in need out of their communities, securing visas and sheltering them in safe houses. Shot with astonishing access, largely with hidden cameras that keep rolling throughout every moment of escape, and employing a revolutionary face-swapping technique to protect the anonymity of its endangered subjects, WELCOME TO CHECHNYA exposes these underreported atrocities, while highlighting an extraordinary group of heroic people confronting a brutal system. Director David France joins us for a conversation on the remarkably effective facial technology used by France to protect the identity of the film subjects and on the Russian republic’s pogrom against defenseless people being tortured and killed because of their sexual identity. The Lion’s Mouth Opens, Lucy Walker’s critically acclaimed short documentary, begins at a dinner between the actress and filmmaker Marianna Palka and her friends the night before she gets results from a genetic test that will tell her whether she carries the gene for Huntington’s disease. Palka’s father has had a long battle with the neurodegenerative disorder and she has a 50 percent chance of having the gene that causes it. As the film readies to debut on HBO June 1 at 8 p.m., we spoke to Palka about her decision to document her experience, why she chose to be tested, and whether it is better to know or not know. Because of the nature of the film, we have agreed not to discuss her test results in consideration of listeners who may not yet have seen the film.

Sotomayor vs. First Amendment: An Interview with Avery and Lauren Doninger

Welcome to Light On Light Through, Episode 63:  Sonia Sotomayor vs. the First Amendment: An Interview with Avery and Lauren Doninger.  The First Amendment has almost never been under greater fire.   Broadcasters are being fined record amounts and the FCC and Congress are calling out for more.   Students are being taught the wrong lessons about freedom of expression in some of our schools, and courts are supporting these schools.  One of those cases - involving a 16-year old high school student, Avery Doninger - made its way to the Second Circuit Appeals Court, where Sonia Sotomayor and two colleague justices supported the school.   Judge Sotomayor now seems likely to be confirmed by the US Senate to serve a lifetime position on the United States Supreme Court. In this special episode of Light On Light Through, I interview Avery Doninger and her mother, Lauren Doninger.  You can hear in their own voices what was at stake in Avery's case - what the case was all about - and their reaction to the adverse decision of the Sotomayor court.   The case may well reach the U.S. Supreme Court...
