In this episode of Art of the Kickstart, we spoke with Eric Kurbanov, founder of RKIN and creator of U1. When Kurbanov realized how much bottled water he'd been consuming, he set out looking for a better way. His research showed him how inherently unsustainable and unhealthy bottled water was. Eventually, he created U1, a 4-in-1 reverse osmosis water purification system. With a preexisting customer base and ten years of customer feedback, Kurbanov launched his Kickstarter campaign. Listen to learn how U1 turned into a top crowdfunding campaign in an industry that is slowly becoming more popular. Short on time? Here's what we talked about. With U1, RKIN created a first in the industry system of water purifiers and filters. U1 eliminates the need for external water lines and hookups and delivers purified water through reverse osmosis. Many people buy bottled water without ever considering its many problems, including unsustainable packaging, BPA in materials and contaminated water. The more Kurbanov learned, the more convinced he was of the need for a product like U1. Every crowdfunding campaign relies on trust, and Kurbanov and his company leveraged 10 years of trust when creating and launching U1 on Kickstarter. U1's Kickstarter campaign is in the top 4% of all successful crowdfunding campaigns, having raised more than $100K. The team was prepared for the campaign and had preexisting customer trust, but running a top crowdfunding campaign presented unique challenges. If you have ever tried to do any form of artwork on a traditional tablet, you know that it can be physically exhausting. That's because of the general design of a consumer tablet. A small bezel around the screen is nice and convenient when you're reading, browsing Facebook, or playing a videogame, but it isn't great when drawing. Even when sketching our studio design before CES, the design of our tablet was uncomfortable. But, for those who work on tablets regularly, the Sketchboard Pro will make it a better experience. The Sketchboard Pro looks fairly simple at first glance. It's a flat board with a handle and a gap for an iPad. But, in reality, it is a significantly more advanced product than that. The size and shape are designed to make drawing on the tablet more like drawing on a drafting board. The wide border around the screen gives you somewhere to lean on while you draw or write, meaning you don't have to hover your arm in the air. It also offers feet on all four corners, allowing you to raise it for landscape or portrait mode. The actual iPad gap is incredibly well thought out as well. There is a small hole at the bottom which is designed to allow you to plug the iPad in while you are using it. You can run the power from the bottom through the hole and into the tablet. The Sketchboard Pro also has magnets in the gap to hold the iPad in place. That way you can pick up the Sketchboard and walk around with it, without worrying about your expensive tablet ejecting itself. The Sketchboard Pro is available for pre-order on Indiegogo InDemand. You might find this episode’s topic a bit interesting: “Life After Crowdfunding: IndieGoGo InDemand – What Do I Do After I’ve Had a Successful Campaign on Kickstarter?” An interesting question! Your journey has just begun. Don’t worry, though—we’ll get it all covered in this episode… ---------------------------------------------------------------- ⭐ During this episode, we detail these takeaways: 1. Indiegogo InDemand is an excellent platform for gleaning additional funds for your project while it’s awaiting fulfillment (between Kickstarter phase and e-commerce phase), while leveraging the relatively-high “organic” traffic to Indiegogo’s website. 2. It’s best to prepare your Indiegogo InDemand page to debut immediately when your Kickstarter campaign ends, and to redirect traffic from your Kickstarter page through a “Spotlight” button to your Indiegogo page, so that you don’t needlessly lose either momentum or pledges. 3. It helps to market your Kickstarter campaign through short URLs with adjustable forwarding that can be updated anytime your project transitions from one platform to another. 4. While campaigning on Indiegogo, you should use “secret perks,” negotiate Indiegogo newsletter appearances, and possibly leverage your success to obtain additional funds from angel investors and/or venture capitalists, including on “Shark Tank,” which can also be good for publicity. 5. You can end your Indiegogo InDemand campaign anytime (and even resume it anytime) until your Kickstarter project is fulfilled, but you shouldn’t expect your InDemand campaign to raise more than a fraction of what your Kickstarter campaign raised. ✍️ Click here for this episode’s complete show notes! ----------------------------------------------------------------
In this episode, we’re finally going to answer the age-old question that we probably get asked just as much as anything and, until this point, there’s never been a direct, straightforward answer to. The question: “Which platform should I choose for launching my campaign—Indiegogo or Kickstarter?” The answer might surprise you… ---------------------------------------------------------------- ⭐ During this episode, we detail these takeaways: 1. Evaluate your project’s suitability for rewards-based crowdfunding before choosing a platform, which is currently either Kickstarter or Indiegogo. 2. Indiegogo will both treat creators better and support creators actively, whereas Kickstarter will demand higher standards that please backers and earn their trust. 3. Identical projects will always raise money significantly better on Kickstarter than on Indiegogo, as hard data proves, enough that some failing campaigns will enjoy success merely by transitioning platforms from Indiegogo to Kickstarter. 4. Unless comparative statistics change dramatically, always campaign on Kickstarter if possible, and Indiegogo only as a backup option. 5. If your campaign succeeds on Kickstarter, then consider transitioning afterward to Indiegogo InDemand to raise additional pledges until fulfillment. ✍️ Click here for this episode’s complete show notes! ----------------------------------------------------------------
