After Treatment: What the First 90 Days Really Look Like, with Beth Hillman

When Beth Hillman's son came home from wilderness treatment, the first crisis didn't come from him. It came from her. Standing in the driveway, anxious and spiraling, she watched her teenage son look at her calmly and say, "Mom, look at me. I'm gonna be okay." Her first thought was not relief. It was, oh! I'm in big trouble. Her son had come home with more access to his thinking brain than she had. He also came home to a mother who had not yet done her own work and was carrying expectations she could not even name. When he finally told her, "Mom, your expectations of how this is gonna go are going to wreck me," Beth had to get honest about what she was really asking of him.Today Beth is a double certified life and parent coach, host of the Parenting Post-Wilderness podcast, and a familiar voice in our community, where she leads sessions and groups for parents in the fragile season after treatment. In this conversation, we get real about the first 90 days after a child comes home, from both sides. Why kids may agree to everything just to get home, why pushback on a home plan might be the best sign you can get, and what your child is actually walking back into when they return to the house where the holes in the doors are. Beth names the piece most home plans are missing, and I think it will change how you prepare. If your child is coming home from treatment soon, or is already home and wobbling, this episode was made for you.YOU'LL LEARN:The driveway moment that convinced Beth she was the one in troubleWhy kids check every box to get home, and why that is not manipulationWhat her son said about her expectations that stopped Beth coldThe green flag most parents mistake for defianceThe almost too simple practice Beth reached for when her brain went offlineEPISODE RESOURCES:Beth's website - www.bethhillmancoaching.comBeth's podcast, Parenting Post WildernessBeth on Hopestream podcast episode 279Information on PAWS (post-acute withdrawal syndrome)This podcast is part of a nonprofit called Hopestream CommunityLearn about The Stream, our private online community for momsFind us on Instagram hereWatch the podcast on YouTube hereDownload a free e-book, Worried Sick: A Compassionate Guide For Parents When Your Teen or Young Adult Child Misuses Drugs and AlcoholHopestream Community is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and an Amazon Associate. Summer training has a way of turning simple runs into big questions: Why is my pace suddenly slower, how do I stay safe in the heat, and what actually matters in the first weeks of a runDisney build? We sit down with our friend Coach Chris Twiggs to get real answers you can use right away, whether you're gearing up for Wine & Dine, Marathon Weekend, or dreaming about Dopey.Chris takes us from the mountains to the sidewalks, starting with the Hard Rock 100, a legendary 100-mile loop in Colorado with 33,000 feet of climbing, high-altitude reality, and the famous finish-line rule: you kiss the rock. From there, we move to the training most of us are doing now. We talk consistency over speed, how to stop comparing yourself to last season, and why “pixie dust” is not a training plan even when the races are full of magic. The heart of the conversation is heat training and performance. We break down what heat does to your body, how to acclimate on purpose, and how to cool yourself during runs. Chris shares clear red flags to stop a workout, plus hydration and electrolyte cues that too many runners miss. We also cover treadmill strategy, long-run pacing as a speed limit, and why your treadmill is usually more trustworthy than your watch indoors. We also spotlight the Miles To Go 5K in Orlando (with a virtual option) and celebrate race weekend stories, including Nannah's first marathon at Grandma's Marathon and her mom's half marathon PR. Over the last decade, white evangelicals in the U.S. have lost their moral credibility. In response, Peter Wehner says the church should embrace a form of "Christian humanism." The Holy Post crew discusses his article, what he gets right, and why that label may be a barrier for some. Kaitlyn interviews biblical scholar Michael Rhodes about his book,"Reimagining Biblical Politics: What Scripture Says About Public Life and Why It Matters." Rather than looking to specific verses to define our political positions, Rhodes says we must allow all of Scripture to shape our imaginations and then use discernment as we engage our unique political context. Also this week—controversy over the design of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, how faith-based apps are gamifying Christianity, and the benefits of talking to dogs. Varroa Management Guide Update: What Beekeepers Need to Know

The Honey Bee Health Coalition just released the 9th edition of the  Varroa Management Guide. For many beekeepers, this guide has become the go-to reference for cutting through misinformation and focusing on proven, research-backed practices. With this latest edition, the Coalition has made meaningful updates that reflect the increasing difficulty of controlling Varroa, even when best practices are followed. One of the most important changes is the adjustment of treatment thresholds. Becky points out that previous thresholds may not have been aggressive enough, particularly in environments where reinfestation pressure is high. The updated guide now takes a more responsive approach, incorporating seasonal context and more precise mite level guidance. In addition, the guide expands treatment options and improves decision-making frameworks. It integrates key variables such as temperature, brood presence, and honey production timing—helping beekeepers choose the right treatment at the right time while minimizing unintended consequences. Jeff emphasizes the ongoing challenge Varroa presents in the apiary, reinforcing the need for reliable guidance grounded in science. Together, he and Becky encourage listeners to download and study the updated guide, making it a central part of their Varroa management strategy. This short episode serves as both an announcement and a reminder: effective Varroa management requires staying current, adapting strategies, and relying on trusted resources. Moving Wax Around the Hive with Dave Wade (390)

Beekeeping Today Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 22, 2026 53:42

Beekeepers often think of wax production as something that simply happens when colonies build comb. But what if bees are constantly moving wax throughout the hive, recycling it from one location to another as colony needs change? This week, Jeff and Becky welcome Massachusetts beekeeper Dave Wade to discuss his observations and experiments exploring how honey bees utilize and relocate wax within the colony. Dave's journey into beekeeping began nearly twenty years ago when concerns about pollination of backyard fruit trees led him to a local bee school. Since then, he has become an active member of the Worcester County Beekeepers Association and developed a reputation for practical experimentation and careful observation in the bee yard. The discussion focuses on Dave's work providing supplemental wax directly to colonies. Using strips and rolls of beeswax foundation placed inside frames, Dave has observed colonies rapidly incorporating the wax into comb construction, brood nest expansion, honey storage, and comb repairs. His experiments suggest that bees readily utilize available wax resources, especially later in the season when natural wax production slows. Dave shares results from several years of observations, including the use of colored wax to visually track wax movement within colonies. Collaborating with researchers including Dr. David Tarpy, Dr. Michael Smith, and Dr. David Peck, Dave has documented evidence that bees relocate wax significant distances throughout the hive, supporting brood rearing, honey capping, and comb construction. The conversation explores seasonal wax production, comb reduction, honey-bound colonies, package bee development, plastic versus wax foundation, and practical methods beekeepers can use to encourage comb building later in the season. Dave also discusses how supplemental wax may reduce colony energy expenditures and potentially improve colony productivity. Whether you're establishing new colonies, drawing foundation, managing honey-bound hives, or simply fascinated by honey bee behavior, this episode offers a fresh look at one of the colony's most important building materials. ABOUT THE EPISODE:There are days in this journey when the weight of it all becomes almost too much to carry. You are still showing up, still trying, still breathing through a kind of pain most people around you will never fully understand. A few years ago, I sat down and wrote something for you, for the mom and the dad and the grandparent in the thick of it, and I tucked it away. Today I pulled it back out. This piece first appeared on Insight Timer, and it became the most-listened-to content there. I dusted it off because I needed something creative, and because I believe these words may land with where you are today. The world I recorded it in and the community we are now are not so different, and what I felt then, I still feel now. This is not an interview. There is no guest, no framework, no five-step plan. It is just me, speaking out loud the things I wanted every struggling parent to hear in a heavy moment. In this episode I ask you to set down, just for a few minutes, the weight you have been carrying. Not forever. Not in denial. Just long enough to breathe, to remember who you are outside of this fight, and to hear something true: this is not your whole life. You are still in there. And you are stronger than this feels right now.If you are exhausted and need someone to remind you that you are not alone, this one is for you.EPISODE RESOURCES:Free ebook Worried SickBrenda's content on Insight TimerThis podcast is part of a nonprofit called Hopestream CommunityLearn about The Stream, our private online community for momsFind us on Instagram hereWatch the podcast on YouTube hereDownload a free e-book, Worried Sick: A Compassionate Guide For Parents When Your Teen or Young Adult Child Misuses Drugs and AlcoholHopestream Community is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and an Amazon Associate. The North American Honey Bee Expo is expanding for 2027, and organizer Kamon Reynolds joins Jeff Ott and Becky Masterman to share what attendees, educators, and prospective speakers can expect at next year's event. Kamon discusses the Expo's continued growth, plans for additional presentation rooms, expanded educational tracks, and a formal call for speaker submissions. The conversation also highlights the new Beginning Beekeeping Short Course being developed in partnership with Beekeeping Today. Designed specifically for newer beekeepers, the course will provide foundational instruction while helping participants take advantage of the broader educational opportunities available throughout the Expo. Kamon explains what he looks for when selecting speakers, emphasizing practical value, educational quality, and effective presentation skills. He encourages researchers, commercial beekeepers, sideliners, specialty hive practitioners, honey judges, and innovative beekeepers of all experience levels to submit proposals. Additional discussion covers attendance growth, hotel accommodations, expanded Thursday programming, international outreach, support for Australian beekeepers dealing with Varroa, and the importance of building community through large-scale beekeeping events. We react in real time to the Springtime Surprise weekend shifting dates, what that means for resort reservations and DVC juggling, and why having a good travel advisor can save you hours when Disney changes the calendar. Training talk gets practical fast: running in heat without turning it into a competition, how much to slow down as temps rise, and whether “real feel” should drive your pacing more than the number on the thermometer. We compare notes on when we start carrying hydration, electrolytes, and fuel, plus what pre-hydration looks like before a long run so race weekend doesn't become a dehydration lesson. Then we pivot to something purely fun: a Disney parks and resorts “last meal” draft inspired by the Last Meal podcast. Americans can no longer agree on how to teach American history, so we're not teaching it much at all. Is it possible to recover a shared national story? Bee Science with Dewey Caron: Removing Honey Supers

In this sixth installment of Bee Science with Dr. Dewey Caron, Dewey turns attention to one of the final major management tasks of the summer beekeeping season: removing honey supers and preparing honey for extraction and storage. Building on the previous discussion about timely supering, Dewey explains why proper honey super removal is every bit as important as adding supers at the right time. He emphasizes that beekeepers should only remove honey when they are fully prepared to process it, reminding listeners that bees know how to protect their honey stores far better than we do. Delays between harvest and extraction can lead to quality issues, robbing, fermentation concerns, and unnecessary management complications. Dewey reviews the concepts of over-supering and under-supering, discusses colony space management as nectar flows begin to decline, and explains the importance of monitoring whether bees have fully occupied newly added supers. He also addresses the role of queen excluders, baiting supers, and ensuring colonies are actively using available storage space. The episode provides a detailed overview of the primary methods used to remove bees from honey supers, including bee escape boards, fume boards, bee blowers, and the traditional bounce-and-brush technique. Dewey explains the advantages and limitations of each approach and discusses situations where one method may be preferred over another. Additional topics include handling brood discovered in supers, preventing robbing behavior during harvest, managing partially capped honey, using refractometers to measure moisture content, and understanding the risks of storing unprocessed honey supers. Dewey concludes with practical recommendations to help beekeepers protect honey quality while preparing colonies for the transition toward fall management. A bus full of seasoned gardeners showed up to tour my garden, and the questions they asked were so good I wrote every one down. How close is too close when you plant? This episode walks through the real questions from that visit, with practical answers on companion planting, succession planting, tomato blight, and growing celery in a hot, humid climate. Celery and carrots make great neighbors — the celery helps pull excess moisture away. For early blight, prune low stems and learn to live with it instead of spraying. In this behind-the-scenes episode, Sharona and Boz take listeners inside the early stages of designing a brand-new (to Sharona) course: a general education quantitative reasoning class she affectionately describes as “Math for Humans.” Using the conversation itself as a form of reflective practice, Sharona and Boz unpack the challenges of building a grading architecture, selecting meaningful assessments, and creating authentic learning experiences for students who may never take another mathematics course. Along the way, they wrestle with broad learning outcomes, project-based assessment, collaborative grading, student agency, and the growing influence of AI on both learning and assessment. The discussion explores difficult questions about what students actually need to know, how educators can balance structure with autonomy, and whether traditional academic skills still make sense in a world where AI tools are readily available. More than a conversation about one course, this episode offers a candid look at the uncertainty, experimentation, and reflection that accompany thoughtful course design and demonstrates why redesigning a course is often less about finding answers than about asking better questions.LinksPlease note - any books linked here are likely Amazon Associates links. Chris Hansen on the Business of Hauling Package Bees (389)

Beekeeping Today Podcast

Moving package bees across North America is a specialized business that most beekeepers never see firsthand. In this episode, Jeff and Becky welcome Chris Hansen of Rhinelander, Wisconsin, a longtime beekeeper, bee supplier, and professional package bee hauler, to discuss the unique challenges of transporting thousands of honey bees safely across the country. Chris shares how his beekeeping journey began nearly thirty years ago and how a small sideline operation gradually expanded into bee sales, a beekeeping supply business, and eventually a dedicated package bee transportation company. What started as a necessity to move his own bees evolved into a specialized service trusted by beekeepers throughout the United States. The conversation explores the science and logistics of package bee transportation, including airflow management, temperature control, loading and unloading procedures, route planning, driver coordination, and the importance of minimizing stress on the bees during transit. Chris explains how years of experience and trial-and-error led to the development of specialized trailers designed specifically to move large numbers of package bees safely over long distances. Chris also discusses the realities of operating a trucking business, including fuel costs, regulatory requirements, equipment investments, driver recruitment, and the responsibility that comes with transporting living livestock. Along the way, he shares lessons learned from early failures and the continual refinements that have improved bee survival and package quality. Before the interview, Jeff and Becky discuss honey super timing, spring nectar flows, colony growth, swarm prevention, and answer a listener question about common misconceptions among third-year beekeepers. Whether you manage two colonies or two thousand, this episode provides a fascinating look behind the scenes at one of the least-discussed but most essential parts of modern beekeeping. Professor Game Podcast | Rob Alvarez Bucholska chats with gamification gurus, experts and practitioners about education

Struggling with retention, churn, or adoption in your product, service, or program? Get the free Core Drives in the Wild guide and see how to apply real behavioral design to your engagement: professorgame.com/WildCD Episode Summary Alan Yeats, CEO of Pocket Sized Hands, a co-development game studio in Dundee, Scotland, explains why the best learning games start with play and add the curriculum second. He walks through real projects, a knife-crime prevention game stopped cold by school firewalls and a stem cell science game built with Cambridge University, to show how co-design keeps everyone pointed at the same goal. Alan argues that the job is to find the underlying play and the real "why" behind a request, not to cram years of lessons into one product. Listeners come away with a practical filter for any educational or engagement project: build a genuinely good game first, then weave the learning in so people actually engage. About the Host Rob Alvarez is Head of Engagement Strategy, Europe at The Octalysis Group (TOG), a leading gamification and behavioral design consultancy. A globally recognized gamification strategist and TEDx speaker, he founded and hosts Professor Game, the #1 gamification podcast, and has interviewed hundreds of global experts. He designs evidence-based engagement systems that drive motivation, loyalty, and results, and teaches LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® and gamification at top institutions including IE Business School, EFMD, and EBS University across Europe, the Americas, and Asia. Key Takeaways Pocket Sized Hands built a polished Jackbox-style game to steer young people away from knife crime, then hit a wall when school IT firewalls blocked the phone-to-screen connection the experience ran on. The end user is never the only stakeholder a product has to satisfy. For Cambridge University, the studio corrected public misconceptions about stem cell science by running back-to-basics workshops to isolate the one message that mattered, rather than cramming an entire syllabus into a single game. Alan Yeats's rule for education clients who want to throw the whole textbook at a game: make it genuinely fun first, then layer the lessons in, because curriculum with no play earns no engagement to teach against. Co-design converts a client from someone who merely commissioned a product into an owner who evangelizes it, which is why Pocket Sized Hands opens projects with a workshop for facilitators and real users instead of a written spec. Pitching the visual register openly, from a corporate LinkedIn-style progress bar to a fully magical world, lets a team test how far it can push a client before the client pushes back with "that is too much fun." You've been told your dog needs daily walks. We get it; everyone has. When you were a kid and wanted a dog, your guardians probably said something like, “Okay, but you have to make sure to feed, water, and walk them…”  And that probably stuck with you until now. Maybe that routine has been great for all your past dogs, but your current dog, the one you love so deeply, is capital S Struggling, and you spend almost every walk trying not to cry. In this episode, Emily and Ellen hope you feel a little relief, and even a little liberated when they make their case that, no, not all dogs need walks. Instead, they will help you think through your goals, your needs, and what is actually going to work for you and your beloved companion. Because there are a whole lot of ways to get your dog the movement they need that don't require busy streets, a flood of stress, and a miserable time. TLDL (too long, didn't listen): 3 Key Takeaways 1️⃣ Movement can be joyful – Don't stick with movement that leads to meltdowns; instead, find something that sparks joy.2️⃣ Small things often – One more trip to the kitchen, lap around the dining room table, or stretch on the stairs will add up. 3️⃣ Screw “No Pain, No Gain” – Just because it is easy doesn't mean it isn't effective. What if everything we are told about the border crisis is completely missing the point? In this episode, Bill Thompson sits down with Gil Gillenwater, author of *Hope on the Border* and founder of Rancho Feliz. Over nearly 40 years of hands-on work on the US-Mexico border, Gil has discovered a radical truth: traditional charity doesn't work, and a wall cannot fix a crisis of dignity. Gil shares how giving handouts disempowers people, while creating structured opportunities allows families to lift themselves into Mexico's middle class, eliminating the desire to illegally immigrate. From trade-offs like swapping plastic trash for food tickets to transforming privileged American teenagers into "Guardian Warriors," this conversation flips the script on political rhetoric. When my son Enzo was using fentanyl and Xanax and blowing up every structure I tried to build around him, I kept asking the wrong question. What I wasn't asking was what was happening inside him that he couldn't put words to. He was a teenager with an unmedicated ADHD brain, getting more reinforcement and belonging from the drug world than anywhere else in his life, and he had no way to tell me that.Enzo is back on the podcast today with something specific: the things kids who are actively struggling can't necessarily say but really wish their parents understood. When I asked what he would have wanted me to know back then, Enzo told me about a kid he recently mentored who, when asked the same question, said the only thing he wanted his parents to know was, “I'm trying.” And Enzo realized that was exactly it. Not that the drugs were working. Not that his choices were okay. Just that from inside his brain, he was doing something that felt like trying.Enzo is now the founder of Life Strategies Mentors, a mentoring program for young men navigating recovery and reintegration. Princess registration has turned into its own endurance event, and we felt every mile of it. We break down what we saw during the Princess Half Marathon Weekend queue, why more runners are walking away disappointed, and what might be behind the slower movement now that old workarounds are gone. We also talk through the bigger forces at play like field size limits, staging constraints, rising demand, and the way social media can amplify FOMO and frustration. Then we pivot back to what actually moves the needle: training with humility and consistency. We share practical summer running reminders on hydration and slowing down in heat, plus a smart pacing tool for sticky weather: the Galloway magic half mile. If you've ever panicked after getting new training paces, this conversation is for you, especially if you're trying to build longer run intervals without blowing up.Runner's World Senior Health and Fitness Editor Donna Raskin joins us to talk longevity, evidence-based fitness advice, and why runDisney stands apart from typical racing culture. She connects movement to independence, community to health, and reminds us that “old” and “overuse” aren't diagnoses. We wrap with a race report spotlight that hits straight in the heart: Amy returns to racing on the Yellow Brick Road after chemotherapy and celebrates being cancer free.Subscribe for more runDisney news, training talk, and community stories, then share this with a friend and leave a review so more runners can find us.Rise and Run LinksRise and Run Podcast Facebook PageRise and Run Podcast InstagramRise and Run Podcast Website and ShopRise and Run PatreonRunningwithalysha Alysha's Run Coaching (Mention Rise And Run and get $10 off)Johns Fundraising Link For The Special Forces Foundation Send us Fan MailSupport the showRise and Run Podcast is supported by our audience. While secular journalists, scholars, and even the Pope are wrestling with big questions about Artificial Intelligence, the war in the Middle East, and what it means to be truly human, the Southern Baptists have decided the most urgent problem in 2026 is banning women from preaching. Phil asks why evangelicals are still fixated on issues from 50 years ago, while other Christian traditions are leading the culture in tackling modern questions. Zachary Wagner, author of "Men of Virtue," joins Skye and Kaitlyn for a roundup of masculine news. Wagner says the excesses of some expressions of feminism have fueled a subculture of male grievance, and that a pagan vision of masculinity is now masquerading as Christian throughout the manosphere. Also this week, nuns are challenging the tech giants, and Google wants permission to "debug" Florida.   Holy Post Plus: Ad-Free Version of this Episode: https://holypost.substack.com/p/724-the-problem-with-pagan-masculinity   Looksmaxing, Beauty, and Masculinity - Bonus Interview with Zachary Wagner: https://holypost.substack.com/p/looksmaxing-beauty-and-masculinity   0:00 - Intro   2:58 - Theme Song   3:20 - Sponsor - Our Place - Go to https://www.fromourplace.com and use code HOLYPOST to get 10% off site wide on beautiful cookware!   4:22 - Sponsor - AG1 - Heavily researched, thoroughly purity-tested, and filled with stuff you need. Jennie Durant, PhD, joins Beekeeping Today to discuss her new book, Bitter Honey: Big Ag's Threat to the Bees and the Fight to Save Them. Drawing from more than fifteen years of research, interviews, and fieldwork, Jennie explores the complex relationship between commercial beekeeping and modern agriculture. She shares how her interest in honey bees began during her graduate studies in the Philippines and eventually led to a PhD focused on the challenges facing managed pollinators in large-scale agricultural systems. Jennie discusses the evolution of commercial beekeeping in response to the growing demand for almond pollination and how intensified management practices—including supplemental feeding, migratory pollination, and aggressive mite control—have become necessary to maintain colony health and profitability. She explains how habitat loss, monoculture agriculture, pesticide exposure, climate change, and economic pressures have created a difficult environment for both beekeepers and bees. The conversation also explores the often-contentious discussions surrounding honey bees and native pollinators. Jennie emphasizes that habitat loss is the underlying issue affecting all pollinators and advocates for expanding forage resources rather than framing the discussion as a competition between species. Becky and Jeff discuss the importance of habitat restoration, pollinator-friendly land management, and the role beekeepers can play in supporting broader conservation efforts. Jennie highlights organizations such as the Bee and Butterfly Habitat Fund and discusses practical actions individuals can take to improve forage availability for pollinators. She also shares stories gathered while researching the book, including the challenges commercial beekeepers have faced in obtaining effective mite treatments over the years. Throughout the discussion, Jennie provides a thoughtful and balanced perspective on the realities facing modern beekeeping while offering hope through examples of innovative habitat projects, conservation programs, and collaborative efforts aimed at improving conditions for managed and native bees alike.
