Adam Clark: Black Christology from Howard Thurman to James Cone

Homebrewed Christianity Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 17, 2025 96:10

Holy smokes, theology nerds – buckle up for a prophetic ride through Black Christology that'll completely recalibrate your understanding of Jesus and faith in times of empire. I am joined by Dr. Adam Clark as he traces the revolutionary lineage from Howard Thurman's mystical Jesus who refuses the "hounds of hell" (after being called a traitor to dark peoples for following Christianity), through Albert Cleage's literal Black Messiah who'd be riding in the colored section of Jim Crow buses, to James Cone's God who shows up at the lynching tree. At a moment when Christian nationalism weaponizes the gospel to enforce xenophobic authoritarianism, this prophetic tradition reminds us that authentic Christian witness is found in loving solidarity with the crucified of today. This isn't polite reflection, friends – it's resistance theology that exposes how God deliberately identifies with the oppressed, choosing foolishness to shame the wise and weakness to shame the strong. This episode might flip your theological world upside down, but that's precisely what good theology should do. To get Adam's lecture and four more, join the class,The Many Faces of Christ Today. Grace Ji-Sun Kim: Feminist Christology

In this episode, I am joined by Dr. Grace Ji-Sun Kim's to discuss Feminist Christology. We explore the importance of retrieving feminine imagery of God and Jesus through the biblical wisdom figure Sophia. She argues that despite Jesus's historical maleness, a feminist Christological approach is essential for contemporary Christianity because it challenges 2000 years of patriarchal interpretations and creates more inclusive understandings of the divine. The conversation traces Sophia's development across Hebrew Scripture, demonstrating how early Christians identified Jesus with this feminine divine figure, particularly in Paul's letters, Matthew, and John. Kim connects Sophia with Asian religious concepts like prajna, suggesting that this wisdom Christology offers liberating possibilities for Korean North American women navigating bicultural identities. She points out that feminist theologians are not inventing new concepts but reclaiming a significant biblical tradition that portrays God's presence in feminine imagery, which was largely eclipsed in later Christian history due to patriarchal influences. Paul Capetz: The Two Paths of Liberal Christology

In this session, we are joined by historical theologian, Dr. Paul Capetz. Dr. Capetz, a minister in the United Methodist Church and former theology professor at various Protestant seminaries, discusses liberal Christology and its limitations. While identifying as a liberal theologian who seeks to reconcile Protestant heritage with Enlightenment thinking, Capetz argues that traditional liberal Christology is fundamentally flawed. He explains that liberal theologians like Friedrich Schleiermacher attempted to reconstruct the historical Jesus using modern historical analysis, but this approach faces insurmountable challenges. Following Rudolf Bultmann, whom Capetz considers the greatest New Testament scholar of the 20th century, he contends that a biography of Jesus cannot be written due to limited reliable historical sources. More importantly, Capetz argues that Christology shouldn't be based on speculations about Jesus's relationship with God, but rather on the apostles' witness to Jesus as the decisive revelation of God's love. Despite his fascination with the historical Jesus question, Capetz believes that the liberal approach of grounding Christology in historical reconstruction is both historically impossible and theologically misguided. In this session, Dr. Ruben Rosario Rodriguez provides an overview of Reformed Christology, focusing on the theological contributions of two key 20th century Reformed theologians: Karl Barth and Jürgen Moltmann. He begins by introducing the Reformed tradition's historical roots in 16th century Calvinism and its emphasis on social responsibility. It then examines Barth's Christocentric theology, which emphasizes God's transcendence and self-revelation in Christ as the only source of knowledge about God. Barth rejected liberal Protestantism's subjective approach and insisted on Christ as the center of all theology. He then transitions to Moltmann, whose theology developed in the shadow of the Holocaust. Moltmann rejected the doctrine of divine impassibility, arguing that God suffers with humanity, particularly through Christ on the cross. His Trinitarian theology emphasizes God as a community of equals and has political implications, including the church's responsibility to critique society and work toward justice. Both theologians maintain that Christ's suffering reveals God's solidarity with the oppressed and offers hope for transformation. If stress is high, your body is likely trying to protect you, not punish you. They explain how stress shows up in different ways: lack of sleep, cravings, bloating, mood swings, and even feeling wired at night and tired in the morning. Chase and Chris also talk about how people can get used to being under constant stress and not even realize how much it's affecting them. They share client examples and give lots of real-life stories to help you connect the dots in your own life. This episode is all about building awareness. If your fat loss has hit a wall, your body might not be broken—it might just be overwhelmed.Chapters(00:00) Welcome to the Mini-Series on Stress and Fat Loss(01:38) Why Stress Is the #1 Progress Killer(03:24) Frustration, Burnout, and the Illusion of Doing Everything Right(05:08) The Many Faces of Stress (Sleep, Skipping Meals, Over-Scheduling)(06:47) Your Body Doesn't Know the Difference Between Kinds of Stress(08:52) How Stress Sends the Wrong Signals for Fat Loss(10:06) High-Functioning Stress: “I'm Just Busy”(12:40) Adaptive Stress and the Danger of Normalizing Burnout(14:46) How Stress Affects Hormones and Fat Storage(15:38) The Sleep-Stress-Snacking Snowball(17:34) Digestive Issues Caused by Stress(19:39) Cravings, Decision Fatigue, and Emotional Eating(21:45) The All-or-Nothing Mindset Under Stress(24:13) Signs Stress is Sabotaging Your Progress(27:01) Wrapping Up: You're Not Broken, Your Body is Overwhelmed(28:28) Self-Assessment: How Stressed Are You, Really?(30:02) What's Coming in Next Week's EpisodeSUBMIT YOUR QUESTIONS to be answered on the show: https://forms.gle/B6bpTBDYnDcbUkeD7How to Connect with Us:Chase's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/changing_chase/Chris' Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/conquer_fitness2021/Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/665770984678334/Interested in 1:1 Coaching: https://conquerfitnessandnutrition.com/1on1-coachingJoin The Fit Fam Collective: https://conquerfitnessandnutrition.com/fit-fam-collective

Welcome to another solo episode. This topic has come up several times with guests and I wanted to do a whole episode on it because it's that important and it's not talked about enough. Some say survivorship starts as soon as you are diagnosed. I think it should be defined as everything that happens after the end of active treatment. Sounds like what we all want, right? Treatment done, no evidence of disease, back to normal life. Unfortunately, it's often not that simple. It can be very emotional and not necessarily in a good way. Let's discuss...This episode is for everyone! I talk to people going through active treatment right now, those who have finished active treatment and may be experiencing this emotional roller coaster, and caregivers/family/friends.We talk a lot about normalizing cancer and treatment. We need to normalize the emotions of survivorship as well. And the podcast is almost a year old!!! The first episode launched on March 5, 2024. Happy Anniversary to The Many Faces of Cancer!!! I want to kick things up a notch for year 2, so I need to hear from you! What do you want to hear? The piece examines Sean "Diddy" Combs' public rebranding as a changed man, contrasting it with recent allegations suggesting continued abusive behavior. Despite Combs' claims of personal growth following a 2016 incident where he was recorded assaulting his then-girlfriend Cassie Ventura, multiple sources allege that his abusive actions persisted well beyond this purported turning point. The article details accounts from new accusers who describe experiences of manipulation, coercion, and violence at the hands of Combs. These allegations challenge the narrative of redemption that Combs has promoted, painting a picture of ongoing misconduct that contradicts his public persona during his "Love" era. The piece underscores the disparity between Combs' professed transformation and the troubling claims of those who have come forward, suggesting that his abusive behavior did not cease as he has asserted.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Sean 'Diddy' Combs Was a ‘Demon' in 'Love' Era, New Accusers Say

**For this History This Week special feature, Sally interviews director Robert Eggers about his new historically inspired film, Nosferatu.** Winter, 1476. Vlad III is a prince in Wallachia, in present-day Romania. He is a violent man, so violent that he earns the nickname "Vlad the Impaler." He also has another name that he inherited from his father: Dracula. Dracula is constantly fighting for his crown, but today, that fight will come to an end. His headless body will be discovered in a marsh, stuck down by his enemies. But his legend will live on. Dracula pops up in stories throughout Europe over the next few centuries, until author Bram Stoker decides to combine this legend with the latest fictional craze, vampires. His book, Dracula, becomes the king of the genre. It inspires numerous adaptations, including a silent film called Nosferatu. It's considered one of the most important horror movies in history. Over 100 years later, director Robert Eggers has reimagined the original Nosferatu and adapted it for a modern audience. In a conversation with Eggers, we asked, how did he make a blood-sucking monster feel like a historical figure? And where do vampires fit into our lives today? Special thanks to Robert Eggers, director of Nosferatu. We also used a great book to help research this episode, Dracula: Prince of Many Faces, by Radu Florescu and Raymond McNally. Andrea Canning and Dateline producer Lynn Keller go behind the scenes of their latest episode, “The Man of Many Faces."  In 2020, American fugitive Nicholas Rossi tried to evade law enforcement and a slew of criminal charges by faking his own death, fleeing the country, and taking on a new persona. Andrea and Lynn talk about their determination to track him down and what it was like interviewing him. They discuss meeting one of Nick's accusers and share their reaction to Rossi's latest explanation for his changing identities. Plus, Andrea shares a clip from her interview with a Glasgow pub owner who thought it was strange the man claiming to be an Irish orphan didn't know of a famous British dish.
