Just before midnight on December 6, 1991, an Austin, TX patrol officer called in a fire at a yogurt shop and requested firefighters and additional officers. Once they managed to get the fire under control, firefighters discovered the bodies of four teenage girls in the burned out remains of the building, all having been shot execution style and the building torched to cover up the crime.Almost immediately, investigators on the case ran into a dead end, as leads were scarce and the fire and efforts to extinguish it destroyed or compromised critical evidence. In short time, the case went cold and the residents of Austin moved on. To their surprise, nearly ten years later, Austin detectives announced they'd arrested for young men for the crime, two of whom confessed, and it seemed like, after a long delay, justice would finally be served; however, in this case, justice was still a long way off and when it finally arrived, it came tainted by police misconduct.ReferencesAssociated Press. 1992. Merle Haggard was what authorities liked to call a “repeat offender.” He was arrested for riding trains, for skipping school, for stealing cars, for robbing gas stations, and for attempting to knock over a restaurant – during the Christmas Eve rush. He was committed to juvenile halls, correctional facilities, and reform schools 17 times, and 17 times he escaped. When he was arrested for the final time, he was sent to do hard time at San Quentin. He turned 21 in prison. And it was in prison that he found the freedom he'd been running towards his whole life – freedom that was delivered from an unlikely source. **Discussion begins at 3:30**Last month, the Louvre museum's Galerie d'Apollon was the target of a brazen heist, with four men fleeing with eight pieces of French Crown Jewels valued at over $100 million USD or €88 million.  Disguised as construction workers and using a truck-mounted lift, two of the suspects accessed a first-floor window, cut into display cases, and fled via motorbikes with their loot.  The heist immediately generated a search for the jewels and suspects, as well as a plethora of other questions.  How did the thieves know exactly which window was weak, which display cases to target, and how to orchestrate a clean, rapid escape?  Was this an opportunistic crime, or a deliberately orchestrated inside job?  Questions also circulated surrounding the lack of surveillance and intrusion protocols despite previous security audits and known vulnerabilities.  With key items still missing and suspects only partially cooperating, theories abound -  Were the four thieves part of a larger network?  And what was the motive?  Could this have been a commissioned theft for a private collector, or were the pieces dismantled, recut, and resold with assistance of an underground network?  Today we'll discuss what we know about the Louvre Heist, focusing on the possibilities of a larger conspiracy. Send us a textSupport the showTheme song by INDA
