Scott Maggs, (AKA Jimmy Niggles) sold his beard for a lot of money. A real lot. $1,013,970 to be exact. That's how much the prized and very manicured beard of Scott's was sold for after 11 years of love and nurture. But the money wasn't for Jimmy (or Scott). It goes to the cause he helped create to try and eradicate skin cancer, a deeply personal journey for him as he lost his close friend in 2010 to melanoma - a spot on his mate's neck that appeared harmless until it was too late. This episode talks about loss, creativity, letting go, saving lives, creating lives and the joys of drinking beer in paper bags. In a deeply honest and raw conversation, Scott talks about how he came to let go of the persona of (Jimmy Niggles) to really grow into the man who created it all - Scotty Maggs. ----------------------LUKE SHANAHAN: Luke has been a film-maker ever since his dad took him to see Star Wars when he was a young-un. After a film school stint and with a strong love of telling dark tales with some home truths, his critically acclaimed short films, THE NEWS, PET and THE FIRST DATE brought the worlds attention to Luke's work and his first feature, the haunting thriller RABBIT starring Adelaide Clemens, Alex Russell and Veerle Baetens, premiered at MIFF (Melbourne Film Festival) in 2017 and was named one of the stand-outs of the festival by artistic director, Michelle Carey. With two new features close to production, Shanahan recently was awarded the ADG (Australian Directors Guild) award for Best Direction in a Commercial (2020) for his NZ Post campaign. Represented by SCOUNDREL for commercial work and MOSAIC for drama, he still loves Star Wars although David Lynch and Kubrick did sneak in there for influence. BEN RENNIE: Ben dreamed of being a professional cricketer, then realised a weekend in the hot sun dressed in cricket whites was everything he didn't want in life. Now a dad to three teens, Ben is a professional advisor, CEO, board member & entrepreneur. He speaks publicly and in the media on the emergence of technology & design to solve complex problems. Ben works with Ray-Ban, BHP, Kellogg's, Westpac and Patagonia, to name a few, and is the CEO role at RENY® and a partner in ELECTRIC eyewear. Ben spends valuable time on the boards of Skin Check Champions and the Chumpy Pullin Foundation. He still watches cricket and dreams of being in the big bash!----------------------
Losing a loved one to cancer is everyone's worst nightmare. When that nightmare came true for Scott Maggs and the friends and family of his mate Wes, he knew he had to turn his grief into meaningful action that would honour Wes's life, and save others. Enter: Jimmy Niggles Esq. Jimmy Niggles was a persona created by Scott and his friends as part of the Beard Season, a social movement started in 2010 that sought to grow awareness of the risks of the skin cancer that took his mate Wes, and encourage Australians to get themselves checked – and early. With Australia being home to one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, it was a lofty goal. Ten years, a trip to stay on Necker Island with and learn from Richard Branson, a partnership with Merivale and many beards later, Scott's message recently culminated in the Million Dollar Beard Ball, hosted by Hamish Blake and Michael 'Wippa' Wipfli, reaching the charity's Million Dollar fundraising target. I caught up with Scott to talk about the Beard Season journey, chatting about how he saw his big idea be recognised by key industry players, the challenges of being the face of your own brand, and how he worked to turn conversations into results. John has once again fled to Byron Bay on DK duties, leaving a well-lubricated Jack and James to babysit a hungover Garry in this week's Friday Sharpeners. In a brief pre-recorded segment, John recounts what went down at the Million Dollar Beard event last night wherein the artist formerly known as Jimmy Niggles - now Scott Maggs - shaved off his iconic face foliage for a cool milly after a decade or so. From there, the conversation meanders over to the standard restaurant, car, and hotel chat leading into the weekend. Enjoy.
Garry is back with a vengeance this podcast after stitching up the boys (and you loyal listeners) by teasing 'The Garry Show', which never eventuated. After his rant is out of the way, we welcome back the man with the 11-year-old beard, Jimmy Niggles, who next week is hosting the Million Dollar Beard Ball to finally part with the beard forever. Apologies in advance for the rowdiness of this one, what a mess. Enjoy.
Today's No Filter episode features a man with a beard. But it's not just any beard. Jimmy Niggle's life changed forever 10 years ago when he was 26 and sitting at his best friends wake. As beers were being passed around and stories told, Jimmy decided to change his life. But how exactly is a beard life changing? Since that moment, Jimmy has become a bit famous but not just because of his beard or the heartfelt story behind it. Earlier this year, he married the love of his life and their wedding unexpectedly became a massive media story for all the wrong reasons. In this conversation, Jimmy discusses friendship, love and what happens when your wedding becomes a national health crisis. Melanoma accounts for about 1% of all skin cancer cases, but the vast majority of skin cancer deaths. And contrary to the common belief, melanoma affects men and women of all ages. In this podcast episode, Marni will be speaking with Jimmy Niggles, CEO and Co-Founder of Beard Season. Beard Season started from a fun challenge between mates and has grown into what it is today. A lot of this was because Jimmy decided to keep his beard after the first winter following his close friend's death due to melanoma. Their mission is to champion the early detection of melanoma - the deadliest form of skin cancer. Thus, Jimmy's goal is to sell his beard for million-dollar to fund the world’s first national skin check program. Over the course of eight long years, he has taken Beard Season from a ‘side project’ and turned it into a sustainable, highly impactful, life-saving charity. As of November 2018, Jimmy became the movement’s official CEO. Listen with us as we learn more about this cause that deserves to enjoy an inspiring, global presence. Plus bonus story on why Sir Richard Branson was the first person to trim his beard! In Episode 8 of 'Friday Sharpeners' we get hyped for Bad Boys 3 following its trailer drop earlier this week, chat about the upcoming all-electric Porsche Taycan and discuss our tasting of James Squire's 220-year-old beer compared to a 51-year-old drop from the Speyside distillery Craigellachie. Keeping it short and sweet to start off, we round out Episode 8 with a decent chat to Beard Season's Jimmy Niggles, who's been growing his beard for 9 years now with one huge goal in his sights - to sell his facial fuzz for a massive $1,000,000. Find out why on this week's episode of Friday Sharpeners.

What started as a cheeky challenge has grown into a global movement. We have ambassadors in over 24 countries, amassed a community of over 90,000 people and gained millions in earned media. But by far our proudest achievement is that we now save an average of a life a week. People who might not be here if it weren't for our friendly, furry advice. Not a bad excuse to unleash a majestic neck mane right? Well, if you're keen to get involved, save some lives and help make a massive difference - it'd be an honour to have you aboard.
In this episode, I connected with Jimmy Niggles — the founder of Beard Season, an organisation that aims to raise awareness about skin cancer and specifically, melanoma. The idea behind it is to encourage men to grow a beard for three months over winter, get a skin check and then use their beard to tell others to do the same. He came up with the idea when he lost a friend to the deadly disease at just 26 years of age, and wanted to change people’s attitudes when it came to getting their skin checked. Eight seasons on and having scored Sir Richard Branson as an ambassador, Niggles reflects on this on going journey and how he manages to fit his own life into it. Head over to meninthistown.com to view selects from our portrait session and in the meantime I hope you enjoy the conversation that took place.

The following winter Jimmy Niggles and his mates played what is now an annual footie game in memory of Wes and in 2011 grew their beards in his honour through the winter, in an event they dubbed Beard Season. Beard Season evolved has over the past 5-6 years into an ongoing campaign to spread the word about how important it is to check your skin for abnormalities that might lead to cancer only a yearly and to raise awareness of what to look for, particularly as most people, myself included, don’t know that the most people at risk from melanoma are blokes aged 18-45. On Wednesday night just gone, Jimmy and I sat down at for a Bronte Beach sunset of red wine, cheese and dips and recorded a podcast about skin cancer, Richard Branson, Graham Norton, the #MillionDollarBeard, dreams with dates & much much more. It’s inspiring to think that what was an event set-up to commemorate a good mate & top bloke, has grown into a global phenomenon and it was just wonderful to spend with an individual who is striving to spend a large chunk of their time making a positive impact on the lives of others. In this episode we talk about the story behind the Beard Season movement and how it has grown and is saving at least one person from melanoma each week. Jimmy talks about how every person he meets is invited to be part of their growing story and this has seen the message spread not only in Australia but around the world. In sharing his Be The Drop communication tip, Jimmy recommends the 'cannon ball' technique - a sure fire way to get attention and bring others along for the ride - but you'll need to listen to the end to hear his advice about this! Just a heads up, we arranged to meet with Jimmy in a little bar in Sydney, the perfect setting for a man like Jimmy. It does however lend to being a little noisier than we'd like, so apologies in advance for any extra background noise you might be able to hear. The lineup for the first season of BTD include a not-for-profit CEO, an Olympian, change makers in numerous industries, a reality TV winner and a social media influencer. Hey guys welcome to the second episode of the giant thinkers podcast. I’m super excited to bring to you a very unique guest to the show. In particular, what this person represents has inspired me and thousands of others globally for many years now and continues to do so today. He grew up in rural NSW Australia, but now lives in Sydney, he surfs everyday, he’s a copy writer by trade, a lover of Nutella, has travelled the world, been part of a huge photography exhibition in London recently, has a massive appetite for creativity and is just an overall nice guy and a lover of life.On top of that, he’s most known for starting a non-profit health promotion charity called beard season, which is an invitation to get a skin check and become an ambassador in the fight against melanoma.Melanoma is one of the deadliest cancers in the world, killing over 46,000 people a year. According to skincancer.org ‘each year there are more new cases of skin cancer than the combined incidence of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon.’There’s a lot covered in this episode so I won’t give too much away, we dig deep, we share stories, there’s a tonne of useful advice, we have a few laughs and I’m sure you’ll enjoy this one — so it’s great pleasure, to introduce to you, Scott Maggs, aka Jimmy Niggles.See more of Jimmy and Beard Season here: http://beardseason.com.auSubscribe to The Giant Thinkers Podcast on iTunes.
