One of my absolute favorite critics working today is Jourdain Searles, a contributor to several publications (The Film Stage, Hollywood Reporter) and DVD/Blu-ray labels, but I also avidly read her X posts which offer a sharp running critique on films new and old. Searles joins the podcast to discuss a couple of big films screening in New Directors / New Films—Lurker (the Closing Night selection, directed by Alex Russell) and Mad Bills to Pay (Joel Alfonso Vargas)—and some other notable titles from Sundance like Dead Lover (Grace Glowicki), Together (Michael Shanks), and By Design (Amanda Kramer). Do you ever feel like modern parenting has become a balancing act between giving your kids everything they need and stepping back to let them grow? Today, Lara sits down with Dr. Alex Russell, a clinical psychologist and expert in children's emotional development and parenting. Dr. Russell is the author of Drop the Worry Ball: How to Parent in the Age of Entitlement, a must-read for parents navigating today's complex world of over-parenting and helicopter tendencies. With over two decades of experience working with children, teens, and families, Dr. Russell provides powerful insights into the pitfalls of over-parenting and why allowing kids to face challenges is essential for their growth. He introduces the idea of giving children an “apprenticeship in reality”—a way for them to learn resilience, confidence, and problem-solving skills by experiencing real-world challenges in a supportive environment. In this episode, we explore:✔️ Why parents today feel pressured to step in and “solve” every challenge for their kids✔️ How over-protection can unintentionally increase anxiety and lower self-esteem✔️ The benefits of letting children experience frustration and failure in a safe way✔️ Practical strategies for stepping back while still providing loving guidanceIf you've ever worried about when to step in—or step back—as a parent, this episode will give you the tools and confidence to raise independent, emotionally strong children.-----Find more of Dr. Alex Russell's Work: https://russellpsychology.com/team/dr-alex-russell/Buy Drop The Worry Ball on Amazon -----Follow Parenting Ed-Ventures on Instagram:@parentingedventurespodLearn more about Tutor Teach:https://tutorteach.ca/-----Intro Music:Good Times by Patrick PatrikiosSting Music:Timelapse by Purple Planet Music

Fraser Brown might not be someone you've heard of in Australian greenkeeping before, but he will be after you listen to his story in this interview. Lake Karrinyup Country Club is often considered one of, if not, the best golf course Western Australia has to offer. Designed by Alex Russell, Australian design partner of Alister MacKenzie, it is located on a unique site in Perth's northern suburbs. For nearly the past 8 years Fraser has lead the maintenance team as Superintendent of this wonderful golf course, preserving its unique qualities and retaining its proud place in Australian golf. Fraser's journey to becoming Superintendent at Lake Karrinyup could be considered as unique the course itself. A Scotsman growing up in an area the rest of us might consider golf heaven, Fraser found his early calling, before taking a path less travelled (possibly by no one ever before) to eventually landing in Australia and maintaining turf in one of Australia's most unique locations! If this story doesn't show you just where greenkeeping can take you around the world, then nothing will. Come and join Fraser and I as we learn about the wild west and other far flung corners of the globe. You hit 'em clean and we'll keep 'em green! One of Australia's finest layout, and one that is often over-looked by locals and overseas visitors alike.  We've been looking forward to covering East, and hope that you enjoy the discussion.  This episode kicks off with a brief summary of the experience at the Marvel Stadium Golf event in Melbourne, and the imminent opening of the underground carpark at Royal Melbourne are briefly discussed before launching into the main fare.   Matt provides a little detail on the origins of the East course, and the work of Alex Russell both on completing the West, and designing and building the East.  Two great images that flesh out the origins of the course, and provide an example of the early form of one or two holes in particular.  The nature of the land on which the course sits is discussed, and how that influences the design of the course, providing a layout of contrasting character to the West next door.   There's an 18 hole match play exercise that Scott conducts where East and West face off.  Other issues including the potential for an East hole to be the best par three on the entire complex.  The story of Gary Player's amazing 1963 Australian Open, won over the East course amazes Scott.  The highlights of the East course are covered, along with one or two perceived lower moments. Changes to the layouts over the years from Hawtree and Doak are also covered.  We hope you enjoy listening to the chat about one of Australia's finest golf courses.   Those who wish to visit Royal Melbourne can commence enquiries via this link - https://www.royalmelbourne.com.au/visitors/   The specifics on Dr. John Green's book on the History of Royal Melbourne's courses for those hoping to track down a copy - https://catalogue.nla.gov.au/catalog/5196961   Images related to this episode can be found on our Instagram page (@AustralianGolfPassport) and on Twitter (@AusGolfPassport). This led Ellidy to reassess her life and the chance of a future family. The result is a fantastic journey through grief, resilience and ultimately progression to parenthood. However, the spirit of (Chumpy) lives on through new life, and in this episode, we discover, Ellidy has a story that goes way beyond baby Minnie and the legacy of her famous husband. For this mid-morning, pre-lunch chat, we talk to Ellidy (with a sleeping Minnie in the background) and ask, what it's like to be an influencer, a CEO and a mum .....while the spirit of "Chumpy" lives on, all around her.   LUKE SHANAHAN: Luke has been a film-maker ever since his dad took him to see Star Wars when he was a young-un. After a film school stint and with a strong love of telling dark tales with some home truths, his critically acclaimed short films, THE NEWS, PET and THE FIRST DATE brought the worlds attention to Luke's work and his first feature, the haunting thriller RABBIT starring Adelaide Clemens, Alex Russell and Veerle Baetens, premiered at MIFF (Melbourne Film Festival) in 2017 and was named one of the stand-outs of the festival by artistic director, Michelle Carey. With two new features close to production, Shanahan recently was awarded the ADG (Australian Directors Guild) award for Best Direction in a Commercial (2020) for his NZ Post campaign. Tim Ross (aka Rosso) has done it all so it should come as no surprise that we catch up with him in the palatial surrounds of a Bellingen motel room to talk about all things, Tim.  From his beginnings in "stand-up" comedy to becoming one of Australia's most successful radio hosts and with TV shows in-between, we chat with him about how to transition your career, his love of design and architecture and just how to bloody swear with panache and style.Ever the Renaissance man, Tim tackles our big question with thought-provoking ideas,  wondering just how cavemen might have fared in these COVID times while at the same time pondering if there is in fact any (real) difference between a car salesman and a politician.Rosso began his career performing stand-up comedy as part of the very successful double act, Merrick and Rosso in the early '90s. More recently he is best known for his passion for architecture and design, presenting the ABC series, Streets of Your Town whilst also performing live shows in some of Australia's most important houses. In addition, Rosso has become an influential voice for the preservation of historical landmarks in Australia. ----------------------LUKE SHANAHAN: Luke has been a film-maker ever since his dad took him to see Star Wars when he was a young-un. Scott Maggs, (AKA Jimmy Niggles) sold his beard for a lot of money. A real lot. $1,013,970 to be exact. That's how much the prized and very manicured beard of Scott's was sold for after 11 years of love and nurture. But the money wasn't for Jimmy (or Scott). It goes to the cause he helped create to try and eradicate skin cancer, a deeply personal journey for him as he lost his close friend in 2010 to melanoma - a spot on his mate's neck that appeared harmless until it was too late.  This episode talks about loss, creativity, letting go, saving lives, creating lives and the joys of drinking beer in paper bags. In a deeply honest and raw conversation, Scott talks about how he came to let go of the persona of (Jimmy Niggles) to really grow into the man who created it all - Scotty Maggs. ----------------------LUKE SHANAHAN: Luke has been a film-maker ever since his dad took him to see Star Wars when he was a young-un.
