Dave Balfe was a key player in late ‘70s Liverpool, joined Big In Japan and the Teardrop Explodes, co-founded Zoo Records and, later, Food who signed and launched Blur. It's fascinating to hear how he's adapted to promoting music now with his new band Late Transmissions. We talk to him here about the landmarks moments that mapped out his life, among them … … growing up in the Wirral and its patchouli-scented record shops … seeing Wings and Bowie's Ziggy Stardust tour in Liverpool … how it felt to be immortalised in Blur's Country House … what he learnt making AI pop videos … when your teenage band “goes punk” … breaking and entering Rumbelows in pursuit of a synthesiser … the curious link between Blur and JD Salinger in the days “they were all Kurt Weill and discordant” … the Runaways at Erics – “I wasn't entirely there for the music” … Big In Japan with Bill Drummond, Budgie, Ian Brodie and Jayne Casey .. is AI like the arrival of synthesisers: “this is not proper music?” … “the old gag, innovation is not pastiching bands that have already been pastiched” … and Mark's interview with him 47 years ago. Larry Lieber's Chirps: From Marvel Heroes To A Talking Mutant Budgie?

Today on Word Balloon, comics legends Larry Lieber and Danny Fingeroth join us for a fun and imaginative conversation about Larry's new prose novel Chirps. The story centers on Chirps, a mutant budgie who can think and speak like a human being. Alongside his billionaire industrialist friend, Chirps finds himself pursued by dangerous forces determined to capture him and exploit the secrets behind his extraordinary intelligence. The novel blends science fiction adventure, humor, and old-school pulp storytelling in a way that feels very true to Larry's classic comic book roots. And what roots they are. Larry was one of the foundational writers of the early Marvel Universe, scripting the very first adventures of Iron Man, Thor, and Ant-Man. He also wrote countless giant monster stories during Marvel's pre-superhero era, including the first appearance of Groot, and chronicled dozens of western adventures starring Rawhide Kid. Larry talks about creating the world and personality of Chirps, writing prose instead of comics, and building suspense around a tiny feathered hero caught between powerful allies and ruthless enemies.Danny Fingeroth helps provide additional context throughout the conversation, including stories about working under Larry during their time together in the Marvel UK office and firsthand observations of Larry's quiet but enormously influential role in Marvel history. Along the way, the conversation naturally drifts into comics history, Marvel memories, editorial war stories, and Larry's remarkable body of work as one of the key creative figures from the early Marvel era.

Kylie Minogue calls in ahead of her Netflix documentary dropping tomorrow and it is everything. She talks about why it took years to say yes, how she finally felt okay enough in herself to let people behind the curtain, and what it was like reliving decades of archive footage. She is proud of her resilience above everything else, proud of taking risks even when they didn't work, and deeply done with the singing budgie era. The press back then was brutal and she had no platform to push back. Now she does. Her defining song: Love at First Sight because it has her DNA in it. We played it immediately.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The author and actor thinks summer in Australia is done bigger, better and weirder than anywhere else. For three months of the year, life slows down and heats up. But for William, summer in Australia is an imperfect paradise where more than anything, people yearn to connect.Summer can be a hellish time in Australia, where temperatures soar and fires can turn bush and buildings to rubble in an instant. But despite the challenges, William McInnes looks upon this time of year with great affection and nostalgia.Growing up in Redcliffe, Queensland, William remembers the heat that burnt through his thongs, the strange ritual of assembling a plastic European Christmas tree on a 40-degree day, and simple moments in the sun like jumping off his dad's shoulders into the cool coastal water.Every summer connects William with his family, his childhood and his past, just like millions of other Australians on riverbanks and beaches around the country. It's a Scorcher: Tales of the Australian Summer is published by Hachette. This episode of Conversations explores seasons, heat, bushfires, Koolewong, weather forecast, drought, BOM, swimming, tennis, Australian Open, Boxing Day Test, Cricket, Ashes, book, memoir, writing, Australiana, Kitsch, climate change, nostalgia, family time, Christmas, holidays, New Year, how to survive the holidays, road trips, vacation, bikini, swimmers, togs, school holidays, parents. To binge even more great episodes of the Conversations podcast with Richard Fidler and Sarah Kanowski go the ABC listen app (Australia) or wherever you get your podcasts. Budgie (born Peter Edward Clarke) is an English drummer recognized for his work with Siouxsie and the Banshees (1979–1996) and the percussion-driven project The Creatures (1981–2004). He  lost his mother at age 12, and that early loss becomes a central theme in The Absence: Memoirs of a Banshee Drummer, where he also writes candidly about his marriage with Siouxsie Sioux, struggles with alcohol, and the power dynamics in both his personal and musical life. His drumming is praised for being offbeat, tom-tom-intensive, and for bringing melodic and rhythmic invention rather than just keeping time.

Remember when we thought AI was going to bring about utopia or Skynet? Turns out, it's mostly just a bunch of fancy spreadsheets, a potential bubble ready to burst (looking at you, Nvidia), and a legal minefield. We're talking wrongful death lawsuits because a chatbot encouraged suicide, OpenAI admitting their 'safety controls degrade,' and then secretly siccing the cops on users. Plus, the Citizen app's AI can't even tell a murder vehicle from a motor vehicle, and Grok 2.5 is now open source if you want to invite that chaos into your life. Also, don't ask Google if 1995 was 30 years ago, because apparently, AI can't do basic math.Meanwhile, the adults in the room are just doing what they do: the U.S. government is buying a chunk of Intel, while Trump wants to "design" government websites (with badly edited photos, naturally). Meta's own AI stuff is so bad they're just licensing Midjourney's tech, proving it's always easier to buy than build. Apple TV+ raised its prices, and Spotify finally figured out how to let you DM songs. Over at Apple Fitness, it seems the execs are fostering a "toxic workplace environment," because who knew working out could be so hardcore? Oh, and Chipotle is doing drone delivery now. Welcome to Zipotle, because getting off your ass is apparently too much to ask.As for what we're actually watching, it's a mixed bag. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' documentary episode was... fine, but Paramount's axing jobs and "un-renewing" Dexter: Original Sin to focus on Dexter: Resurrection (because that always works out). We're trying to keep up with Alien: Earth, Wednesday, and Upload, but good luck with those staggered release dates. Apple TV+ has some good sci-fi, but Foundation might just be a hate-watch for Brian. And in the library, we've got Budgie's surprisingly depressing memoir and some solid sci-fi from Scott Meyer and Dennis E. Taylor. It's almost enough to make you miss the simpler times before AI broke everything.Sponsors:CleanMyMac - clnmy.com/Grumpyoldgeeks - Use code OLDGEEKS for 20% off.Private Internet Access - Go to GOG.Show/vpn and sign up today. Our guest today is a drummer, percussionist and songwriter who cut his teeth on the St Helens cabaret circuit, at just 13 years old. However that would prove to be a world away from the groundbreaking career he would pursue in the world of Post-Punk and alternative rock. Peter Clarke is better known professionally under the name of Budgie. A self taught timekeeper, his unique style has lent itself to the likes of The Slits, The Glove, The Creatures and of course imperial phase of Siouxsie and the Banshees. Over the last 40 odd years Budgie has laid down the rhythm for alternative music and now he has written a book about his life, his journey through the music industry and most importantly his understanding of self. The Absence is much more than a rock n roll diary its an honest exploration of the factors that drove him from obscurity to fame and the very edge of control. Its an honest and unflinching look at a life that until now has only ever been glimpsed from the outside. We are delighted to welcome the musical pioneer that is Budgie to the show. Before all that Deb gets caught sneaking out of a film premier by Pauline Black and then has a smashing time with Phillip Glass. NAUSEA by Jean-Paul Sartre GO WENT GONE by Jenny Erpenbeck LAURUS by Evgeny VodolazkinBudgie is best known as the drummer with Siouxsie & The Banshees and The Creatures, as well as The Slits. His memoir The Absence: Memoirs of A Banshee is published in July 2025. Together with the Korean novelist Juhea Kim he chooses his favourite book to discuss with Harriett Gilbert. His choice is Nausea by Jean-Paul Sartre because he it resonated with him as a young man finding his place in the world.Juhea Kim is the author of two critically acclaimed novels - Beasts of A Little Land and City of Night Birds. Juhea's choice is set in 15th century Russia and is the story of Arseny, a healer who makes a pilgrimage through plague ridden Europe to Jerusalem. Laurus by Evgeny Vodolazkin is a densely packed novel that deals with fundamental questions about the purpose of life and death. It's also extremely humorous in parts.Go Went Gone by Jenny Erpenbeck is Harriett's choice. Set in Berlin, it is the story of a newly retired German Professor and how he becomes involved with a group of African asylum seekers trapped within a bureaucratic system that bounces them back and forth between Italy and Germany with no resolution in sight. It's produced by Maggie Ayre for BBC Audio in BristolPhoto credit Billy & Hells
