We had the pleasure of interviewing Andrew Belle over Zoom video! Andrew Belle writes songs by feel. The composition comes first. The melody follows. Only after Belle has an internal reaction to the composition do the lyrics finally come. Finding the right words to express what has always been there, but is only now being fully realized. Track by track. Belle writes songs by feel and Nightshade is a vibe.On Nightshade, Belle collaborated once again with long time producer Chad Copelin (LANY, Ben Rector, BRONCHO), James McAlister (Sufjan Stevens, The National), and fellow artist SYML - who co-wrote with Belle ‘My Poor Heart' the first single off his fourth full length album. The track is a pulsing, driving love song that chronicles the phases of a seasoned relationship, with each chorus returning to the initial spark that drew the lovers together to begin with. When it came time to record the album, the Chicago-based singer-songwriter, chose to take his trusted collaborators to the vaunted Sonic Ranch Studios, located on the US-Mexico border in Tornillo, Texas. The studio compound, which sits on a 1,700-acre pecan orchard, boasts the world's largest residential recording studio complex and has been the birthplace of albums by Bon Iver, Beach House and a slew of other notable artists.A good portion of Nightshade takes on a subject that has become part of our cultural zeitgeist – mental health. Specifically, how we deal with life itself and why a lot of us seem to be drawn toward unhealthy coping mechanisms. While a few tracks address these themes head on – ‘Spectrum', ‘Inside Voices' and ‘Surprise Surprise' – the album as a whole serves as a soundtrack for anyone driving out of a season of perpetual midnight in their life; toward a sunrise that is a little more hopeful - through a desert just north of the border. Nightshade is a vibe.We want to hear from you! We had the pleasure of interviewing Hush Kids over Zoom video! Nashville -based duo Hush Kids return with a new EP Weatherman.Comprised of renowned artists Jill Andrews and Peter Groenwald, this is Hush Kids' first new release since their critically acclaimed self-titled debut album in 2018. The lead single and title track "Weatherman" is out now and finds the duo reuniting with Grammy Award-winning producer Ian Fitchuk (Kacey Musgraves, Maren Morris, Leon Bridges)."During the spring of 2020, when we were in lockdown, it rained, poured really, for days, maybe even weeks," stated Jill. "My husband Jerred has lived most of his adult life in dry arid places and he wasn't used to it. He would look outside almost every day, saddened by the dark sky and soggy earth. He would say, 'This place just never stops. It's like a rain forest.' I always like to put a silver lining on things so my response was usually something like, 'I guess that's why it's so green and beautiful here.' But the sunless days can take their toll on the best of us, and I could tell that he was feeling down as the rainy days and tumultuous weather wore on. She continued, "All of this was on my mind that day last spring when I got together with Ian and Peter to write for the next Hush Kids record. We sat on Ian's back porch and caught up for a long time, enjoying being in each other's presence so much because it had been a while since we'd last seen each other. This one came easily to us and I think we all cried a little when we were writing it. I'm so happy that we can share it with you guys today! I hope that your days are sunny even when the rain is pouring down.” "This was the first song I had written in person for maybe eight months," added Peter. "We were on a porch, it felt kind of weird, but we trusted each other. Jill said she had an idea, and I believe she sang what is now the first line of the song. I tend to have a look on my face when I think something is amazing, and it actually looks like I'm disgusted...food, art, music...it's more of a look of disbelief that something can be that good. That's how I looked when Jill shared this idea with us.” Hush Kids is a friendship with music. It began long before it had a name when two beloved Nashville artists with impressive solo careers were put together by their publishers to write songs for other people; in time, they discovered they had been writing for themselves all along. Their earliest sessions revealed more than chemistry, they revealed kindredness, an innate understanding that allowed two very different people to write some of the most deeply personal music of their careers. Incredible, instinctive vocal symmetry, captivating melodies, and intimate, intelligent lyrics speak to the years of tireless craftsmanship and well-earned successes by both artists respectively. Garnering praise from Rolling Stone, Billboard, Paste, Relix, and Folk Alley, among others, Hush Kids' 2018 debut journeys across the unexpected, the strangeness of love rather than the sweetness, the beauty of the world rather than the bullshit. Guided by writer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Ian Fitchuk, the record paired the effortless, addictive pop sensibility of The Carpenters with the dusty, atmospheric, desert landscape of Robert Plant and Allison'sKraus's Americana classic Raising Sand. Despite the name, Hush Kids is not about quiet, it's about stepping away from the wrong kind of noise to embrace the music. A gifted composer, producer, and musician, Peter has toured extensively and shared the stage with artists such as The Civil Wars, Andrew Belle, and Ruston Kelly. In 2020, he joined forces with Sean McConnell and Garrison Starr to release an EP as My Sister, My Brother. Never one to rest, Peter followed that up with an EP in early 2021 co-written and co-produced alongside production duo I WAS THE LIONtitledCome To Life. Jill, a founding member of the alt/countryfavoriteThe Everybodyfields, has performed alongside The Avett Brothers, The Secret Sisters, and DrewHolcomb & the Neighbors as well as secured television placements that includeGrey's Anatomy, This Is Us, and the theme song for SyFy'sbelovedWynona Earp. In2020, she released her critically acclaimed album and accompanying book Thirties, and followed that up with a dark EP of songs from her back catalog called Vultures. We want to hear from you! Splice Machine announced the company’s new data science workbench, ML Manager, at the Spark + AI Summit 2019 being held April 23-25, in San Francisco, CA. Cory caught up with Splice Machine's founder and CEO, Monte Zweben, about how Splice Machine bridges the gap between operational databases and the tools used by data scientists to power modern AI. Splice Machine’s new Data Science Workbench, called ML Manager, empowers data science teams to maximize the performance of their machine learning models by removing the latency associated with building complex data pipelines, performing cumbersome transformations and training models on updated data. At the Spark+AI Summit, Monte presented, “Without Operational AI, Your ML Model is Stale” which will discussed how companies can integrate OLTP, OLAP and ML capabilities in a unified platform to make intelligent decisions in real time using data at scale. Nashville’s Jeremy Lister started connecting with music while growing up in the middle of Mississippi. A son of a preacher, he began singing and learning harmonies in church at the age of two. Lister moved to Nashville in 2003, bringing his first EP, Shooting Star, with him. In 2005, he released his second EP, So Far, followed by the release of his Just One Day EP on Warner Bros. Records. That same year, he was invited to join the Ten Out of Tenn collective of singer/songwriters, which included then up-and-coming artists such as Andrew Belle, K.S. Rhoads, and Gabe Dixon. In 2010, he joined a cappella group Street Corner Symphony for the second season of NBC’s "The Sing-Off." The group became a fan favorite, eventually claiming the second-place title in the competition. Ben Folds invited them out on the road immediately following their success on the show, which launched their touring career. Street Corner Symphony performs dozens of headlining shows all over the world each year. Lister released his first solo full-length album, The Bed You Made, in 2011, which featured a duet with Alison Krauss on the song You and I. In 2013, he released the single Set Us Free, which became the theme song for the MTV series "The World Of Jenks." In 2017, he and his brothers, together under the name Lister Brothers, co-wrote and released the album Helium Ocean. In the 15+ years since he moved to Nashville, Lister has become a Music City staple, known for his prolific songwriting and unequaled vocal range. He has worked with some of Nashville’s biggest names, from Alison Krauss to Amy Grant, Megan Trainor, and Chely Wright. Lister recently launched a YouTube channel where he catalogs new music and collaborations with acoustic videos. His latest release, an EP entitled Sign Language, is due out in 2018.

Chicago-based Andrew Belle has made a name for himself as one of our more compelling songwriters since releasing his debut album The Ladder in 2010. Though that album held strong at number one for several weeks on iTunes's singer-songwriter chart and earned dozens of television and film licenses, Belle boldly followed a new muse on the album's electronic, alternative follow-up, Black Bear. His third and latest album Dive Deep doubles down on the ethereal electronic sound of Black Bear, and sees Belle pushing himself to new depths as a songwriter, a vocalist, and a composer. Soaring choruses and moody arrangements abound on Dive Deep, a thoughtfully crafted and deeply felt album that deserves consideration among peers like James Blake and Bon Iver. www.andrewbelle.com https://twitter.com/andrewbelle LISTEN on i-tunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/dive-deep/id1247043030

How do you resolve the feelings of guilt you have for even purchasing items you need to run a business? How can I be more intentional regarding the relationships I bring into my life? To what extent did the bursting of the housing bubble in 2008 affect your journey into minimalism? Detailed show notes: minimalists.com/podcast. Greg Boyd is an internationally recognized theologian, preacher, teacher, apologist and author. He has been featured on the front page of The New York Times, The Charlie Rose Show, CNN, National Public Radio, the BBC and numerous other television and radio venues. Greg received his Ph.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary (summa cum laude 1988), his M.Div. from Yale Divinity School (cum laude 1982), and his B.A. in Philosophy from the University of Minnesota (1979). Greg has authored or co-authored 20 books and numerous academic articles, including his best-selling and award-winning Letters From a Skeptic and his recent books Repenting of Religion and The Myth of a Christian Nation. His apologetic writings and public debates on the historical Jesus and the problem of evil have helped many skeptics embrace faith, and his writings and seminars on spiritual transformation have had a revolutionary, freeing impact on thousands of believers. Greg passionately believes that faith and reason are not mutually exclusive, but that the mind and heart were made for congruity. He boldly defends a Christian faith that embraces science, rejects religion, transcends politics and nationalism, and that calls for a radical, socially engaged form of discipleship defined by the self-sacrificial love of the Cross. DJ Terry Diabolik is back, and Snacky Tunes is stronger than ever. This week was a week full of heavy hitters. Lee Schrager stopped by the studio fresh off the New York Food and Wine Festival, and previewed the 10 year anniversary bash in South Beach coming up. Later in the show, blossoming pop star Andrew Belle talked about his rise to stardom and graced us with a few beautiful acoustic renditions from his latest record, “The Ladder”. This episode was kindly sponsored by The Barterhouse, purveyors of high quality, small production wines. Photo: Andrew Belle
