Being a teenager has changed. A lot. There's TikTok, vaping, dick pics, snap chat maps...and all the things that were once thought as fixed - like gender and identity - are fluid and open to interpretation. Dr Ginni Mansberg and clinical psychologist Jo Lamble have over 20 years experience as clinicians and parents. They know first hand what concerns parents today about raising adolescents, and they see it daily in their practices. So they've written a book about it called The New Teen Age. Because that's exactly what it is. And they join Mia now to talk about it… THE END BITS: With thanks to Dr. Ginni Mansberg & Jo Lamble Find their book The New Teen Age here: https://www.booktopia.com.au/the-new-teen-age-ginni-mansberg/book/9781922351258.html GET IN TOUCH: Feedback? Hugh van Cuylenberg's job is to teach resilience. He was a primary school teacher volunteering in Northern India when he had a life-changing realisation. Despite the underprivileged community, the children were from, they were remarkably positive. But back in Australia? Well, people found it hard to be happy and they had so much. Which is how The Resilience Project came to life. He learned that there are three key traits and behaviours that are the keys to resilience. And now he teaches it to others at conferences, in his podcast, The Imperfects, and in his book called The Resilience Project. So if you're feeling a bit shit right now - or you've ever felt a bit shit - this one is for you. THE END BITS: With thanks to Hugh van Cuylenburg. This is an episode about pronouns but it's not really. It's actually about love and shame and freedom and acceptance and painful struggles and life-changing revelations. Deni Todorović grew up in regional Victoria and from a young age, Deni knew they were gay. But coming out to their Jehovah's Witness parents in the family home? Well….it wasn't easy. Nor was coming out to their parents 10 years later as non-binary, but, they did it. And their story is why we're here today. This interview nearly didn't happen, and it's really important that you know why. A few weeks ago, Mia had her first Covid-19 vaccination and marked the occasion with a selfie she posted on Instagram. She mentioned how excited she was to be vaccinated, the wonderful experience she had at the mass vaccination hub she attended, and how lucky she felt to get her jab. But a day or two later, the abuse began... In the first part of this episode, Mia talks to Jane Hansen, a journalist who has reported on the toxic, dangerous anti-vax movement for more than a decade. Introducing our new show Extraordinary Stories. If you like what you hear, head to mamamia.com.au/mplus In a chaotic Sydney share-house in the Spring of 1972, a disheveled actor was lying naked on the fraying couch of an inner-city living room. The woman who had paid Jack Thompson $400 was wondering if the actor’s left hand was really big enough to cover his modesty and get her history-making magazine past the conservative censors who’d decide if it would make it to newsagent shelves. The Editor? Ita Buttrose. The magazine? Cleo. For the past year, Josh Frydenberg has had arguably one of the toughest jobs in Australia. When thousands of people lost their jobs due to the pandemic, they turned to the Treasurer like they never had before. But Josh never planned on being a politician. Resilience is one of the biggest self-development buzzwords. Everybody wants to be more resilient yet anxiety and depression in young children has hit an all time high. Daisy Turnbull knows this all too well. The author, mother of two, and director of wellbeing at St Catherine's School has researched different parenting styles extensively and one thing is clear. The rise of helicopter parents, who are protecting their kids from risk is leaving us with a bubble wrapped generation with stunted independence. So what can we do as parents? And what does it mean to be a good mother? She chats to Mia about parenting and the surprising link between risk-taking and resilience. 18 years ago, Ronni Kahn's life looked very different. She was the owner of a successful events company and was in a relationship with a man who she thought was her second shot at love. But one conversation changed the direction of her life forever. Unable to turn a blind eye to the vast amounts of food she was throwing away at the end of each work day, Ronni began delivering the untouched food to homeless shelters around Sydney. It was the beginning of a journey that unlocked another side of Ronni, and founded OzHarvest. Today, Ronni leads hundreds of staff and thousands of volunteers with the goal to nourish Australia. In 1999, Sierra Leone was in the midst of a brutal civil war. Citizens would wake up everyday and face relentless violence. Rebel soldiers would viciously amputate civilians and enslave women, raping them repeatedly during captivity. Aminata Conteh-Biger was one of those women. Snatched from her father’s arms when she was 18-years-olds, Aminata was held captive for months before her captors finally released her. But she still wasn't safe. In 2013, Sam Bloom was on holidays in Thailand when the balcony she was standing on collapsed. Sam fell twenty feet and crashed onto the blue tiles below. Her three young sons saw the whole thing. Sam survived but for a while, she wished she hadn’t. Paralysed from the chest down, Sam and her family had to adjust to a new life. One without surfing, running and independence. A reason, a season or a lifetime. They say friendships only fall into three categories, and these tend to be them. Mia Freedman and Bec Sparrow's friendship started for a reason. They met 10 years ago, bonding over the grief of the daughters they had both lost via miscarriage or stillbirth. And over the years, their friendship continued to grow. Through work, an interstate move, more children, another miscarriage, and the many ups and downs of life. But in 2020, like with a lot of friendships, Mia and Bec struggled. Have you ever wondered what goes on in a strip club? How lap dances actually work? How the women who strip and dance for a living in these clubs feel about their customers and their own bodies? We're dropping into your feed to reshare a special episode of No Filter with you. Earlier this week on No Filter you heard from Rick Morton, all about money. Well, if you’d like to hear more about Rick’s back story, here’s a chat Mia had with him a few years ago about his remarkable life… Rick Morton was born the son of a cattle baron in far western Queensland. His backyard consisted of hundreds of thousands of acres. He went to school by school of the air. And his family home was 500kms from the nearest town. But in just 24 hours, Rick’s life went from being something of an idyllic outback childhood to poverty. So how do you go from rural royalty to dirt poor? What’s it like growing up gay and closeted in a small town? Rick has written a book about his life called 100 Years Of Dirt and he joins his old boss, Mia, to talk about it... Rick Morton is a journalist and author. He’s also learnt to memorise phone numbers. Specifically ones from debt collectors. Because up until recently, Rick was very bad with money. So bad, that he used to borrow from everyone around him. Rick was born the son of a Cattle baron in Central Queensland. But he grew up dirt poor in housing commission, and he’s spent his life overspending the money he has. His new book On Money examines the meaning of money to him and others, and looks into how society often views money as a substitute for morality. This is Rick's story. Christmas. It’s often talked about as the most wonderful time of the year. But at the end of an unspeakable year, it feels like we are all crawling to the finish line that is Christmas in 2020. And for a lot of us, it’s filled with a feeling of grief. Grief for a year we didn’t have. Grief for family we can’t see. And grief for those we lost. Two years ago I sat down with grief counselor Petrea King to talk about how to face Christmas when life is not as you know it. She’s counselled over 120,000 people who are living with cancer and other life-challenging illnesses, or dealing with grief, loss, trauma and tragedy through her foundation, Quest For Life. And because this year has really been life as we don’t know it, I thought it was time to talk to Petrea again. About grief. And about lowering the bar this Christmas. Because it’s okay not to be okay. Here’s Petrea. In this episode, Mia and Silvia chat about everything from how COVID has changed her relationship to her feelings about getting older. Caroline Hirons is 50. A mum of four. A grandma of one. An author. And she’s the most influential woman in beauty right now. A review from Caroline can make or break a product because she tells it like it is, and she’s got millions of fans around the world. Including Mia. So why do we care so much about skincare at the moment? Why is it seen as frivolous and not feminist? And what should we actually be spending our money on? Here’s Caroline Hirons... When you think of Stan Walker, you probably think of Australian Idol, and that catchy song ‘Black Box’ he released straight after he won it in 2009. Stan was 18 when he started on Idol, and 19 by the time he won it. And to most of us, he was just Stan Walker from Australian Idol; the boy who made it big. But what we didn’t know, and what we wouldn’t know until years later was that there was so much more to Stan’s story. Now, at 30, he's a survivor in more ways than one. Just a heads up, this conversation deals with family violence. If you or someone you know needs help, please call 1800RESPECT now. We're dropping into your feed to share an awesome episode of our new podcast, What I Eat When, with you: https://omny.fm/shows/what-i-eat-when/playlists/what-i-eat-when What do you eat when... you're alone? You're homesick? You're celebrating? What you eat when says a lot about you, about your culture, your taste, your family, and what matters to you. Food is so much more than just fuel, it’s an excuse to express who we are and what connects us. What I Eat When is a Mamamia podcast that’s all about meals, moments, and memories. And on our first episode host Silvia Colloca is joined by self-confessed 'Crap Housewife' Jessica Rowe. So what does Jess eat when she's on holiday? Or when she's pregnant? And why does she match her hats with the dinner she's making? Although she doesn't like cooking, as she explains to Silvia, she still likes eating. And food holds a lot of memories for her. As you're about to find out... For the past 5 years, today's guest has kept a secret. She’d wake up and start drinking to get through the day. She’d leave work for a coffee break and buy a bottle of white wine. She’d consume roughly around 80 standard drinks, within one week. Heidi first sought help in 2018 for her alcohol addiction but she didn’t tell anyone. Then last year she came across a call out on social media looking for people to participate in a free six month program if they were struggling with addiction. So she applied. That program would go on to be filmed for SBS’s documentary series Addicted Australia. And all of a sudden, Heidi’s very private addiction became very very public. This is her story. What's the difference between a party girl and an alcoholic? For today's guest, it was about 20 years, a series of traumas, and a large dose of denial. Shanna Whan finally realised she was in serious trouble when she 'came to' in the Emergency Department after being found crumpled and bleeding at the bottom of a flight of stairs. You see for a long time, like many ''high-functioning'' alcoholics, Shan convinced herself it wasn't a serious problem because she was a successful business woman by day, and didn't drink until ''after five'' .... Growing up in rural Australia, heavy drinking was a culturally ingrained and glorified rite of passage she embraced wholeheartedly .. to try and fit in. But it wasn’t until her rock bottom in early 2015 that she knew she had to reach out and ask for help and take action, or die young. Fast forward six years, 15,000 volunteer hours, starting over from scratch, endless failures, knockbacks, and opposition - and now Shanna is the founder and CEO of a national charity called Sober In The Country. This is her story... THE END BITS: Check out Sober In The Country here - https://www.soberinthecountry.org/. Candice Warner is an ironwoman. She’s also the wife of Australian cricketer David Warner, and the mother of three girls. Most recently you would have seen her on Channel Seven’s SAS Australia. So how did she get through those tough times? And what she has learnt about herself because of it? GET IN TOUCH: Feedback? We’re listening! Pauline Nguyen has lived a very big life. When she was 3 years old her family left Vietnam by boat. They spent six days on the South China Sea and arrived at a Thai Refugee camp where they lived for a year, before settling in Australia. Once in Australia, however, things weren’t easy for the Nguyen kids, and Pauline fled home when she was a teenager. These days, Pauline is an award winning author, spiritual entrepreneur and co-founder of Sydney's Red Lantern restaurant. And in this episode of No Filter, she talks to Mia Freedman about everything from being in a polyamorous relationship to running away from home at 17 to breaking the cycle of abuse with her own children...
