Beyond the Gun – Creative Partnerships There's a distinct difference between being cast as an actor in a theatre production and working as a creative collaborator and developing your own work. This session examines how actors can step into producing and move into the developmental life of a project—contributing ideas, shaping the script, and influencing the work as it develops. Actors such as Ngoc Phan, Nicholas Brown, Julia Robertson, Amy Ingram, and Cameron Hurry have expanded their work into producing, writing and directing. This conversation explores how actors can evolve their practice, build a reputation for meaningful creative input, and become initiators and collaborators whose contributions extend beyond performance into the heart of the work itself. Amy is a multi-award-winning actor and theatre-maker based in Brisbane, later this year she will appear in the return season of Pride And Prejudice at QTC and the World Premiere of Suzie Miller's Strong Is The New Pretty touring Nationally. Ngọc is an award-winning actor, director and playwright. In 2026, Julia will direct the premiere production of STELLA, The Musical in Melbourne, as well as The Addams Family for Hayes Theatre Co. She will also work as Movement Director on 84 Charing Cross Road for the Ensemble Theatre, and as Assistant Director on Suzie Miller's new work Strong Is the New Pretty for Sydney Theatre Company, Queensland Theatre and Brisbane Festival. Nicholas Brown is a NIDA graduate who has forged an impressive international career across film, television and theatre as an actor, writer, singer, songwriter and leading man with major roles in Bollywood films, Australian drama and as a much-loved ABC Play School presenter. He plays a lead role in upcoming Alex Proyas science fiction musical film R.U.R. As a playwright, Nicholas won the prestigious Nick Enright Prize for Playwriting in the 2024 NSW Premier's Literary Awards for his play Sex Magick which was performed in the 2023 Griffin Theatre season. It was also nominated for a 2025 AWGIE and a 2024 Sydney Theatre Award. Cameron Hurry is a Brisbane based actor and writer. He completed his actor training at the University of Southern Queensland. Tim Jackson is a prolific Tony-nominated director and choreographer whose work includes Broadway, the West End, film and television. He developed, directed, and choreographed Two Strangers (Carry A Cake Across New York), now playing on Broadway at the Longacre Theatre. “Vincent” is a contemporary, gender-flipped reimagining of Vincent van Gogh. It's not a bio but an impressionistic painting based on Vincent Van Gogh's aura. Littered with the sounds of emo, pop/punk and progressive rock, “Vincent” follows a struggling Brooklyn artist battling loneliness, obsession, and mental illness as her relationship with Paul Gauguin spirals toward catastrophe. Blending indie rock, dreamlike theatricality, and psychological realism, the show asks: when validation never comes, what keeps an artist alive?”Vincent” had its first concert in Syosset, NY where it played a sold out run in 2021. “Vincent” then made its New York City debut in May 2023 at the NY Theater Festival Summerfest where it was nominated for 5 awards and winning 2. (Best Score & Best Direction for Alyssa Kakis). In 2024 Long Island University's Post Theatre Company produced a workshop followed by a full production in 2025 that played to 5 sold out audiences. "Scarlet" is a Japanese animated fantasy action film written and directed by Mamoru Hosoda. Inspired by Shakespeare's tragedy "Hamlet," the film follows the eponymous princess, who can cross time and space on a quest for vengeance after her father is murdered. The film had its world premiere out of competition at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival, where it received positive reviews for its scope and scale, animation, and effects. It was nominated for three Annie Awards: Best Feature (Independent), Best Direction, and Best Writing. We switch from movies to the stage to talk about SING STREET: THE MUSICAL. Anna speaks with iconic producer Barbara Broccoli about her approach in adapting the film into a stage show. Barbara came on our 100th episode of Girls On Film to talk about her work, the Time's Up movement, and No Time To Die. As well as producing the Bond films at Eon Productions, she has produced female-led movies such as Film Stars Don't Die In Liverpool, Nancy, Till, and Blue Road: The Edna O'Brien Story. Anna also chats with the show's director, Rebecca Taichman, about approaching the correct tone and staging for the show. Somebody's Daughter - and the 2018 book and 2022 one-woman show the film is based on – focusses on Zara's personal journey of overcoming early addiction, navigating her life and meeting her birth father after many years and struggles after connecting with her birth mother. The project's true driving force is tofacilitate honest, vulnerable conversations about adoption. Too many people, she says, are ignoring these important issues. In addition to acting and writing, Zara is also a talented singer and songwriter who launched her career in the 80s, appearing in music videos and providing backing vocals on tour with Bob Geldof, Matt Bianco, David Essex and Nick Kamen. While taking some years away from creative endeavors to raise a family, she came back strong in the 2000s, releasing two albums(When The Rain Stops and You. Me & Us) produced by Ted Perlman, whose multi-faceted musical resume includes Whitney Houston, Bob Dylan and Chicago; earning a Best Homegrown Documentary honor for her 2008 film Roots Unknown at the Garden State Film Festival; and publishing in 2008 her first book Mother Me, a compelling memoir about her ongoing struggles as an adoptee now raising a family of her own. A few years later, Zara's song “I'm Legit,” co-written with Darryl McDaniels (DMC of Run-DMC), was a successful single in the adoption world and beyond. In 2014, Zara's one woman show Beneath My Father's Sky, directed by Eliza and Eric Roberts won Best Direction at NYC's United Solo Festival and was performed in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Connecticut and London in 2016. During this era, she was presented with an Angel in Adoption Award by the Congressional Coalition of Adoption Institute. Director Nabil Elderkin shoots music videos and films governed by vision, collaboration and diversity. While thematic similarities connect the dots between his projects, each video is different and a product of the stellar combination of the right artist, the right lighting, and maybe most importantly - the right feel. Growing up in a multi-cultural sphere, dictated by several international moves, led to an open-mindedness and an adaptability which did not hurt his transition into film. Surfing was the context which facilitated his portal in, and although he spent more time on the beach than in the water, the education he received, through direct exposure shooting his friends, was invaluable. His photography interest and experience developed further when he settled in Chicago, and came into Kanye West's orbit. Soon after, he started shooting music videos for a dossier for artists which continues to expand, and includes The Black Eyed Peas, Common, Seal, Bruno Mars, Foals, J. Cole, Travis Scott, Dua Lipa and Kendrick Lamar. For his work on Swim Good and Mercy, which feature Frank Ocean and Kanye West, respectively, Nabil received 3 VMA nominations, including Best Direction in a Video and Best Hip Hop Video for the latter. Among his feature films are the Ugandan breakdancing documentary, Bouncing Cats, and the gut-wrenching exploration of trauma - Gully - which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2019 and stars Charlie Plummer, Amber Heard, Jacob Latimore, Terrence Howard and John Corbett. On set Ebi Shankara and Eswari Gunasagar were gushing over this new show called ‘Karuvanam' on Vasantham in early Dec, and I took a peek and was blown away. I had to meet one of the guys behind this. We chatted, and it's not often that I get back so much from listening to this younger, serious filmmaker. Michael Arden (Director) was awarded the 2023 Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical for his production of Parade starring Ben Platt and Micaela Diamond, which will have a national tour beginning early 2024. Michael was also Tony nominated for his revivals of Once On This Island and Spring Awakening. Michael wrote and directed Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol which played the Nederlander Theatre last Holiday season and starred Jefferson Mays. Michael will helm the new Stephen Schwartz and Lindsey Ferrentino musical The Queen of Versailles starring Kristin Chenowith and a new musical adaptation of the cult film The Lost Boys. Other directing credits include: Maybe Happy Ending at the Atlanta Alliance, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center, and site specific works: American Dream Study and ALIEN/NATION with his company The Forest of Arden. Arden has been named on Variety's Impact List and is the winner of an NAACP Award for best direction of his revival of Merrily We Roll Along at the Wallis Annenberg in Los Angeles. Recognized with Seattle's Distinguished Citizen Medal, she is an advocate for civic dialogue and public participation and has been dedicated throughout her career to the idea that artistic excellence and community engagement are intrinsically connected. Laura previously served as an arts executive for Intiman Theatre and Seattle Repertory Theatre and began her career at D.C.'s Arena Stage, Living Stage Theatre Company. She currently teaches Labor Relations in the graduate program at the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale.
Director Susie Singer Carter Susie is an award-winning writer, playwright, director, producer, and actress. She started her TV/Film career in 2006 writing, producing, and directing two children's series for CBS Saturday morning, “Cake” and “Dance Revolution”. She moved into features writing “BRATZ” for Lionsgate and co-producing “Soul Surfer” for Sony. Her short film, “My Mom and The Girl” starring Valerie Harper in her final beautiful performance, won numerous awards including Best Direction, Best Short Film, Best Ensemble Cast, was officially selected at the “Emerging Filmmaker Showcase” at Cannes 2017 winning a spot in the PBS Fine Cuts series, and was Oscar's qualified in 2018. During the pandemic, Susie launched two successful podcasts. Her talk show, "Love Conquers Alz", received Best Podcast 2020 by New Media Film Festival and is now in its third season. She recently completed the firs season of her scripted comedy/horror, "I Love Lucifer", nominated for 7 Audio Verse Awards. Most recently, Susie was commissioned to adapt the book PLAIN JANE, and is currently attached to direct the dramedy based on the debut novel of the same title by Barrie Levitt Knee. Susie is currently writing, producing, and directing a feature documentary, No Country For Old People, a critically needed documentary inspired by her Mother's last 6 months of life in a Long Term Care facility in 2022. Susie knows the power of storytelling and has attracted an impressive list of the most talented and staunch advocates to contribute to the film. She has also partnered with The National Consumer Voice for Quality Long Term Care who are fiscally sponsoring the film by providing a 501(c)(3) status.

Let's talk about the things that warmed our hearts: Beautifully Written Dialogue: The movie was wonderfully written, with many profound lines like "trust the timing" and poignant themes about holding on and letting go. Humor Amidst Tears: Even though the last 20 minutes were packed with tear-jerking moments, there were great light-hearted instances that provided the perfect balance. Character Development: Seeing characters like Sharon, Shane's mom, evolve was a joy. Her relationship with Oliver was emotionally compelling, especially when she offers to be the mother he deserved. Creative Problem-Solving: Martha Williamson's writing shines as Rita and Norman decide to help Charlie, a young mother. Instead of adopting her baby, they invite her to live with them. It's an unconventional but touching solution. Flashbacks: The flashbacks to previous episodes were not just nostalgic but added depth to the overall narrative, making this feel like a fitting wrap-up to the series. What We Wished For While we loved most of the movie, there were a couple of things we wished were different: Rita, Norman, and Charlie Triangle: The timeline here was a bit confusing. How long have Rita and Norman been trying to have a baby? And the idea of them taking in Charlie and her baby seemed rushed and unconventional. Shane's Sister: Shane's sister, who had a big part in a previous movie, didn't make an appearance, not even a mention.

Serene Mechel-Dillman talks about the global success of her film documenting first-hand accounts of the terminally ill who have used medical aid in dying (MAID). Airing on Amazon Prime, Take Me Out Feet First has been in the top five TV documentaries for the past three months, with more than 24 million minutes of viewing. About Serene A New York native and dancer with a passion for the visual arts, Serene attended The School of American Ballet, Tenafly High School then The University of Vermont. Post graduation, she opted out of law school and worked at an advertising agency in New York, founded a company that imported baskets from Haiti, then moved to Los Angeles to work in production on television commercials. Commercial production stuck and she worked her way up until she became a producer. In 2014 Serene conceived and directed the documentary film, “Getting to The Nutcracker”, a behind the scenes look at what it takes to produce the classic ballet from auditions to final performance. The movie garnered 7 major festival awards, including a Grand Jury Prize, Audience Award, Best Direction, and Best Feature Documentary. Her second documentary, “The 5th Dementia” is about a Los Angeles-based band whose members live with Alzheimer's, dementia and Parkinson's. They are able to sing and play music despite their neurodegenerative diseases. "Take Me Out Feet First" is her first documentary series. On this AwardsWatch podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. On this special episode of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys are joined by the Head of Content for The Ringer and co-host of The Big Picture podcast Sean Fennessey to give out the first awards for a Director Watch series, the PTA Awards. Towards the end of last year, Ryan and Jay set out to cover the films of writer, director Paul Thomas Anderson, thus breaking down one of the great modern filmographies of any contemporary director. In doing this, they talked about dozens of great performances, lines of dialogue, needle drops, favorite scenes, and so much more. So it only made sense to come back one more time to the world of PTA to break down and single out the various categories and reasons why they love PTA's films. Joined by Sean (a fellow lover of PTA's work), they discuss give out awards ranging from Best Male Performance, Best Female Performance, Best Direction, Best Screenplay, Best Needle Drop, Best Scene, the PTA Acting Muse award, Most Valuable Collaborator, and talk about the actor they would love to see in a future PTA film that hasn't already worked with the director. It was a very loose, fun conversation that we hope you all enjoy. Seth is a director, actor, teacher, and the co-founder & co-artistic director of The Barrow Group in New York City. In his storied career as a director he was involved with the award-winning shows My Girlfriend's Boyfriend (Lucille Lortel Award for Best Solo Show, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle nominations for Best Solo Show), Sleepwalk With Me (Nightlife Award for Outstanding Comedian in a Major Performance), The Tricky Part (Obie Award, Drama Desk nominations for Best Play and Best Solo Show), Pentecost (Drama Desk nomination for Best Play), Old Wicked Songs (Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award and Garland Award for Best Direction), and Good (Straw Hat Award for Best Direction), and Mike Birbiglia:The Old Man and The Pool. For television he co-directed Mike Birbiglia:Thank God for Jokes. He directed My Girlfriend's Boyfriend for Netflix, Mike Birbiglia:The New One and he co-directed and co-wrote the film Sleep Walk with Me. As well as being a consulting producer for the film Don't Think Twice. He is the author of the book An Actor's Companion – Tools for the Working Actor published by TCG. She has directed productions of Rock of Ages all over the world, including Broadway and the West End. Ms. Hanggi also known for developing and directing the acclaimed pop opera bare, which ran to sold-out audiences in Los Angeles and off-Broadway, and has gone on to have over 500 productions internationally. In February of 2022, Kristin directed the film Accidentally Brave, produced by Steven Soderbergh, based on the award-winning off-Broadway solo show by Maddie Corman (that Hanggi also developed and directed). As a film and television director, Hanggi directed an episode on the Emmy-nominated Netflix musical series Julie and the Phantoms. Other film directing credits include: Naomi & Ely's No Kiss List, an adaption of Rachel Cohn & David Levithan's popular novel of the same name, starring Victoria Justice, which debuted in Netflix's top ten. She made her feature directorial debut in 2013 with the indie Grantham & Rose with actress Tessa Thompson. For television, Ms. Hanggi adapted and directed the hit book series, Dear Dumb Diary into a musical movie, under Executive Producer Jerry Zucker for Walden Media. She is preparing the stage musical Romy and Michele: The Musical for 2024, and working with music artist India Arie on a stage show of her music.A partial list of other past stage productions: Clueless (with Dove Cameron); Pirate La Dee Da (currently being produced for television by John Legend and Ryan Seacrest); Atlantis by composer Matthew Lee Robinson; the initial production that launched the Pussycat Dolls, Pussycat Dolls Live at the Roxy (starring Gwen Stefani, Christina Aguilera, Charlize Theron, among others).
