Dr. John Cha, faculty member in the Department of Religion and Japanese Studies program at Gustavus, talks about the challenges and impact of growing up Asian-American on Chicago's South Side and in Quincy, Illinois; the influence in his teen years of Huey Newton and Bruce Lee; his academic path to philosophy and religion; being hired by Gustavus; understanding and teaching phenomenology; his comparative research on the 20th-century French phenomenologist Michel Henry and the 8th-century Indian philosopher Śaṅkara; teaching students about non-Western religions; and why learning about religion in general is important.

The relationship between immigrant and second-generation churches has—to put it lightly— been complex. Language and cultural barriers make things lead to misunderstandings and disagreements. Many churches have stories of conflicts over vision, worship times, and lack of parking. But it is possible for first and second-generation churches to worship together. At SOLA Network, we want to highlight the stories that show us new ways to approach old problems. We want to encourage churches and leaders to think differently about “the way things are” and find ways to pursue the kingdom of God together. We are proud to present an interview that Steve Chang, SOLA Council chairman, conducted with Pastor Paul Kim and Pastor John Cha of Open Door Presbyterian Church in Herndon. Pastor Paul Kim is the lead pastor of the Korean-speaking Congregation, while Pastor John Cha was the previous lead pastor of the English-speaking Congregation and is now the Congregational Care pastor. In their wide-ranging conversation, the group discusses the journey ODPC made in becoming “1 Vision, 2 Households, 1 Family.” They talk about how the leaders of both congregations interact regularly, how the two lead pastors share power, giving the English-speaking congregation the 9:30am worship slot, their mission as a church, how to appreciate what the other congregation is doing, and plans for the future of the church. KoreanAmericanHeritage.com presents an episode on the recent political mystery scandal involving a South Korean Maritime Government employee and floating into North Korean waters and being shot then burned by the DPRK navy. The supposedly swift apology from the DPRK and legitimacy of such apology and the response of the South Korean government all come to play here. We are joined by John Cha our in house North Korea expert and his insight gives us a better handle on questioning the situation. KoreanAmericanHeritage.com presents an episode with Flip, Han, and John Cha (https://www.amazon.com/John-H.-Cha/e/B007R8DBF4/ref=dp_byline_cont_pop_book_1) We go over first the current comfort women controversy with Yoon Mi-hyang and her questionable self profiting actions over Grandma Lee Yong-su. But is Grandma Lee Yong Su being swayed by other opportunist like Phyllis Kim? Listen to find out. Second we go over John Cha's thoughts on the blood purity and the falsity of the whole issue based on history and science. Why certain people still perpetuate this falsehood. Third we go over ideal principles of Dosan and what was lost over time from his first teachings to now. What the organizations he created suppose to carry over but now just lost this core ideals and message. What can be done about it now? Fourth Han struggles to step up and lead this younger generation, and figure out a way out is there or will Han just be comfortable watching HBO max all day and not try to fix this, but first he needs to fix himself first. Enjoy. KAHP is hosted by Philip "Flip" Cuddy grandson to Dosan Ahn Chang Ho, son to Susan Ahn Cuddy, one of the most knowledgeable historian in American Korean History. KoreanAmericanHeritage.com presents our event review episode with many thanks to the KAHP team, guests, and supporters. We couldn't have done this without you. Here is a letter our very one John Kim wrote on KAHP behalf. Korean American Heritage Podcast would like to thank each and every person who took the time to preregister and time out of their Saturday to attend our 100 Years of March First event yesterday. This event was for you, and it could not have been the resounding success that it was without all of your support and enthusiasm. It is our sincere hope that, through all the historical accounts, stories, and music that were shared throughout the day, you went back to your homes better informed, equipped, and encouraged to continue to seek out the absolute, unbiased truth, to never be afraid to ask the hard questions, to think and act critically, and ultimately, love yourself and others, and stand up and do what is right and just for all. We would like to extend our special thanks to everyone who helped make the event what it was: our speakers Dr. William Chu, John Cha, Dave Young Kim, Han Kim, and Flip Cuddy; our musical guests Azra, UCLA Hanoolim Poongmul - 한울림 풍물, and Charles Lee featuring Trudi Henderson; our beautiful and amazing emcees Soo Lee, Ara An, and Jessica Kwen; our emcees' traditional wardrobe sponsor Lee Hwa Wedding & Traditional Korean Dress; to all of our staff volunteers; and last but not least, to the heroes who came before us - Yu Gwan Sun, Dosan Ahn Chang Ho, Chu Yo Han and the Waseda Korean Students Association, and everyone else who risked and gave up their lives for Korea's independence and freedom. We recognize and honor their sacrifice and legacy - let us continue to do what we can to fight the good fight and preserve our heritage that our forebears fought so hard to protect. Here is the commemorative group picture that we took together yesterday. Let this be a reminder to us all to continue to love loudly and to live and do justly! (And tag yourselves - more event and photo booth pictures coming very soon!) Again, it was such a pleasure having you join us in honoring and celebrating our history and culture - we sincerely can't thank you enough for your support. Let's keep the questions and conversations going with each other and on our podcast at koreanamericanheritage.com, and we look forward to hearing from you and seeing you (at our next event) again very soon! With Utmost Gratitude, KAHP Team

Never in my wildest dreams or deepest darkest nightmares did I ever think that I would be back in the Valley sitting in a room filled with Korean dudes, nor did I think that I would have a great time, but I did! John Cha is an author who writes about the Korean and Korean-American experience, and was the first person to interview a high-ranked defector from North Korea. He was instrumental in breaking through the Ginseng Curtain, allowing the US to learn about North Korea's inner workings for the first time. For the record, I made up the term Ginseng Curtain. Flip Cuddy is the grandson of Dosan Ahn Chang Ho, a Korean independence activist and leader of the burgeoning Korean-American community in California. Flip is a surfer, carpenter, geographer, hydrologist, and many other things that you might think was total bullshit, but the dude is the real deal! Han Kim, is a podcaster, my cousin, and a real righteous dude letting me and my dog crash at his place despite the fact that he has pet allergies! Do you hear me! He is compromising his immune system for me! I am forever indebted and grateful for his generosity, and his podcast, In The Kimchi Jar, which he puts out weekly with Flip. It will surely become a repository of knowledge and a great resource for people more interested in Korean-American History. We talk a great deal about history, Korean and otherwise, the nature of reality, climate change, the invention of LA kalbi, North Korea, whether Japan should be allowed to have nuclear weapons, and much more.
