The most terrifying thing about nuclear weapons isn't the warheads, but how quiet we as a society have become about them. The Cold War-era fear of total annihilation has morphed into a dangerous cultural amnesia that Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow finds deafening. With her newest film, A House of Dynamite, she is determined to make the world listen again. “I think the fact that the conversation has drifted off has a lot to do with the fact that nuclear weapons have sort of been normalized,” Bigelow tells Newsweek's H. Alan Scott. “And that in and of itself is a pretty terrifying idea. And the fact that we don't look at it with the kind of global annihilation prospect that we should. I mean, we don't tend to take it very seriously.” Pick up our cover story on Bigelow in the latest issue of Newsweek. On this episode of Tree Planters, we visit the inspiring reconciliation-art initiative Call To Action #83 Simcoe County, curated by retired educator and multi-mode artist Mary Lou Meiers. The project brings together Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists in Simcoe County to respond collaboratively to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada's 83rd Call to Action – namely, “A strategy for Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists to undertake collaborative projects and produce works that contribute to the reconciliation process.”We focus here on Phase 1 of 4 of the artworks, immersing ourselves in the stories, the process of dialogue, trust-building and truth-telling, and how art becomes a carrier for both memory and forward-looking hope. As Mary Lou explains, this work is about “going forward together in a good way, in harmony” (awi-niigaani-wiiji-mino-inawendiwin).Support the show

Some of the best conversations I have with my kids are during filler time. Not the quality time you hear hyped up – just a side conversation over breakfast, or driving to an errand, or putting together Ikea furniture.Marketing and public relations can be the same. Instead of focusing all this attention on forcing a customer to take an action, give them value in other ways and naturally bring up your product. Like this episode's guest's story about selling insurance by bringing owls and foxes to schools. It's not an aggressive sales pitch, it's the side conversation.Which is why a key lesson for this episode's guest is – ‘don't underestimate the soft sell.'To hear the story behind that lesson, along with many more lesson-filled stories, I talked to Kelly Coulter, head of marketing, Private Advisor Group [https://www.privateadvisorgroup.com/].Private Advisor Group has $35.2 billion in advisory assets under management. In episode 7 of season 4 of the Nursing Strategies for Success Podcast, I had the ABSOLUTE PLEASURE of having another amazing conversation with Maggie Ortiz of advocatesfornurses.com - She was a guest on Season 2 - where we discuss just how little education is being done to prepare Nurses for just how serious it can be if Nurses do not effectively leverage their licenses and the regulations that are placed against them to advocate for safe and effective care - despite the pressures of an increasingly difficult healthcare system. This is a CALL TO ACTION for Nursing Programs of Study to really beef up the education that Nurses need to protect their patients/residents, themselves, their licenses and the organizations in which they work! From the CEO all the way down to the CNA - following scope of practice and ensuring that others are doing the same is EVERYONE's Responsibility, and in today's healthcare industry - it's more important than ever! ⚖️YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS THIS EPISODE!

If you want donors to move, tell them exactly where to go. In this Fundraisers Friday conversation, Julia C. Patrick and Tony Beall turn vague appeals into precise, energizing calls to action (CTA's)—across giving, events, engagement, volunteering, and advocacy. Tony lays the foundation early: “Start with the call to action. What do I want folks to do?” When you begin with the outcome, every sentence supports momentum, not meandering.Julia puts a common myth on the table: “It's not just like go out and ask a bunch of rich people for money.” Fundraising isn't speed-dial; it's relationship-building, timing, and clarity. Tony reinforces the point: “Fundraising is all about relationships,” and your CTA is the moment you convert relationship energy into tangible next steps—give, register, share, join, or contact.Time-bound CTAs matter. Use real clocks, not artificial pressure. Matching gifts? Set the deadline: “Donate by October 15 so your gift will be doubled.” Community emergencies? Be specific: protect 20 roofs, feed families during power loss, or restore safe access to services this week. Impact framing turns abstract dollars into visible outcomes: $50 feeds one student for a month—$100 feeds two. That clarity invites bigger gifts because supporters can instantly see scale.Equally important: truth and fit. If the amount and impact don't match, supporters feel it. Build your figures from real program data, and keep the language human. Julia adds a practical lens for events: swap “RSVP” for action-forward phrases like “Save my seat.” Tap joyful FOMO without panic. Want engagement? Ask for it. “Click subscribe,” “Invite 10 friends,” “Share with a neighbor adopting a pet.” Want volunteers or in-kind items? Say exactly how to respond and how you'll make it easy.Advocacy belongs in your CTA toolkit too. This isn't about politics—it's about mission. Invite your community to “Stand with families—email your legislator today to support…” Frame the request around the people you serve and the outcome your programs create. Finally, close the loop with gratitude-based storytelling. Julia's favorite “Because of you” CTA wraps action and appreciation into one cadence: Because of you, 50 students received laptops; because of you, seniors got meals during outages. That framing reminds supporters they are the hero—today and tomorrow.Start with the action you need, frame it with authentic impact, and invite your community to step forward—now. This week Andrew Iler, Mark Adamczyk and myself delivered a powerful letter to Congresswoman Luna. Please listen to this brief, but important message and take action. We have a very short period of time to ensure that the Federal Task Force On The Declassification of Federal Secrets ("Task Force") addresses the core issues related to the JFK Records Collection ("Collection") . We applaud the Task Force's efforts thus far to obtain specific records from agencies, but that effort cannot be in lieu of addressing the overall problems with the administration of the JFK Records Collection. We need your assistance to bring this matter forward, and help the Task Force to better understand the significance of what will happen if this matter is not addressed. Time to do that is running out, as the Task Force sunsets near the end of this year. We are pointing out the issues with the administration of the collection, but we are also making specific recommendations to correct those problems that can be addressed at this moment in time. It is imperative that these recommendations be in included in the final report of the Task Force and that, ultimately, Congress acts upon those recommendations including for the time, engaging in oversight of the Collection. Thanks to all of you as listeners of JFK The Enduring Secret for your support of this endeavor.
Carissa Phelps joins Dr. Sandie Morgan as they discuss an unprecedented opportunity for trafficking survivors to access $215 million in remission funds from the Backpage settlement, with a critical February 2026 deadline that could finally put survivors ahead of their traffickers for the first time in movement history. Carissa Phelps Carissa Phelps is a licensed attorney, author, and survivor advocate who founded Runaway Girl, Inc., a social purpose corporation providing survivor-led experiential trainings nationwide. She earned both a Juris Doctor and MBA from UCLA in 2007 and holds a B.A. in Mathematics from California State University, Fresno. As a pioneer in survivor-led advocacy, Carissa has spent nearly two decades empowering communities and amplifying survivor voices through innovative strategies. She is the author of the acclaimed memoir "Runaway Girl: Escaping Life on the Streets, One Helping Hand at a Time" and co-producer of the award-winning documentary "Carissa," both powerful tools used worldwide for education and training on child exploitation and trafficking. Key Points The Backpage remission fund represents $215 million available to trafficking survivors who were exploited on Backpage.com (2004-2018) and CityXGuide.com (2018-2020), marking the largest victim compensation fund in trafficking history. Unlike previous restitution processes that required court appearances, this remission process uses a third-party administrator, removing the traumatic requirement for survivors to face their traffickers in court. The February 2, 2026 deadline creates urgency for outreach, as many survivors remain unaware of this opportunity and the application process requires documentation of trafficking and economic losses. Survivors First community was formed as a working group under Love Never Fails Us to conduct weekly webinars, provide step-by-step guidance, and connect survivors with pro bono legal assistance and medical providers. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) has partnered with over 15 major law firms to provide free, trauma-informed legal representation to help survivors navigate the application process. Economic losses are calculated at federal minimum wage for a 40-hour work week during the trafficking period, though survivors can request higher amounts with proper documentation of different wages or hours. This funding opportunity represents a chance for the anti-trafficking movement to get ahead of traffickers for the first time, particularly as new technologies like Web3 and blockchain create new frontiers for both exploitation and prevention. Resources 19 – Runaway Girl Survivor's First Community Backpage Survivor Remission Network Transcript [00:00:00] Carissa Phelps: For the first time, for the first time in the history of this movement, we have an opportunity to get ahead of traffickers. [00:00:08] Sandie Morgan: Right now, $215 million is waiting for trafficking survivors. This is money that most survivors don't even know exists. The deadline is February 2nd, 2026. The legal system is finally learned from mistakes. There's no court required here. Victims don't have to face their traffickers to apply for this funding. It's a pathway to justice. [00:00:45] I am Dr. Sandie Morgan from the Global Center for Women and Justice at Vanguard University. And my guest is Carissa Phelps. [00:00:57] She's an attorney, a survivor advocate, founder of Runaway Girl Inc. And she is leading the charge to connect survivors with the Backpage remission fund. Let's join our conversation. [00:01:16] [00:01:22] Sandie Morgan: Okay, so Carissa Phelps, welcome to the Ending Human Trafficking Podcast. I have looked back at our history, and the last time you were here was 14 years ago. [00:01:37] Carissa Phelps: Oh my goodness. [00:01:38] Sandie Morgan: Wow. Listeners, if you wanna hear that interview, it's number 19. So welcome Carissa.

There had been progress on the issue of environmental justice, with the contributions of citizen-activists, who spurred the government to protect historically marginalized communities. But in the past few months, the Trump administration has made staff, program, and budget cuts that leave rural, coastal, and frontline communities vulnerable. That's one observation of Cameron Oglesby, internationally awarded environmental justice organizer and solutions journalist. But, Oglesby says, organizations, communities and grass-roots efforts aren't giving up on their vision for a cleaner, greener country. She joins Equal Time to explain. That's one observation of Cameron Oglesby, internationally awarded environmental justice organizer and solutions journalist. But, Oglesby says, organizations, communities and grass-roots efforts aren't giving up on their vision for a cleaner, greener country. She joins Equal Time to explain. This week we broke a golden rule and crossed podcast streams with a pair of excellent guests, Richard Shotton and MichaelAaron Flicker, hosts of the Behavioural Science for Brands podcast and co-authors of the soon-to-be released (and definitely-to-be brilliant) Hacking The Human Mind. Richard is, of course, returning for a record third appearance on Call To Action® although we have respectfully honoured his request to not be left alone with Giles. Responsible for opening industry eyes to the potential of behavioural science, Richard is the author of two books that serious marketing types like you and I could not do without – The Choice Factory and The Illusion of Choice. Alongside him today, as is so often the case, is MichaelAaron Flicker, founder and president of (Zeeenno-Sigh) XenoPsi Ventures, a brand incubator firm that helps out all kinds of companies with financial, marketing and intellectual capital. As well as co-hosting their pod, and co-authoring their book, they've completed a hattrick of Co's by co-founding the Consumer Behaviour Lab, where they apply their considerable collective knowledge to help make marketing smarter, better and less stinky. In an episode where we open the sunroof on the human mind and reveal there's much more to it than day dreams, crippling doubt and song lyrics from 1996, we hear from two of the field's most compelling experts on what it really takes for a brand to be chosen. This episode is proudly dedicated to Rory Sutherland. We are not building businesses in normal times. If you live in the United States of America, right now is the time to be aware of what is happening and have conversations about it. On today's episode, I speak with Texas State Representative Linda Garcia about the critical issues surrounding gerrymandering, the current political climate in Texas, and the importance of community engagement in the democratic process. We discuss the implications of redistricting, the role of the President in state politics, and the strategic moves made by Democrats to break quorum in order to protect their constituents' rights. Linda emphasizes the need for active participation in politics and the power of individual votes, urging listeners to mobilize and support their communities. To learn more about Rep. PATRON SAINT OF MISSING CHILDREN CALL TO ACTION | MAN OF PEACE PODCAST
In this open-line Friday segment, the show dives into the cultural firestorm surrounding Sydney Sweeney's Baskin-Robbins ad — and what the backlash says about beauty standards, cancel culture, and political identity in America today. Tara explores how major brands are pushing back against left-wing cultural dominance and why the reaction to Sweeney's image is about more than just aesthetics. Listeners also join the conversation, including a compelling call from Riley in Chesnee, who makes a heartfelt plea for younger voters to get involved in local politics — especially in critical races like sheriff elections. The episode wraps with practical advice for digital activism, including how to build influence and spread truth on platforms like X. A thought-provoking blend of cultural commentary and grassroots organizing, this episode challenges listeners to reject fear, engage the culture, and take back the narrative — one post, one vote, and one conversation at a time.
