featured Wiki of the Day

fWotD Episode 2869: Pulgasari Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Thursday, 13 March 2025 is Pulgasari.Pulgasari is an epic monster film directed and produced by Shin Sang-ok in 1985 during his North Korean abduction. A co-production between North Korea, Japan, and China, it is supposedly a remake of Bulgasari, a 1962 South Korean film that also depicts Bulgasari/Pulgasari, a creature from Korean folklore. The ensemble cast includes Chang Sŏnhŭi, Ham Kisŏp, Ri Chongguk, Ri Ingwŏn, and Yu Kyŏngae, with Kenpachiro Satsuma in the title role. Set during the Goryeo dynasty, Pulgasari follows a blacksmith's daughter who brings to life a metal-eating monster her late father created to defeat the monarchy.Shin and his wife, Choi Eun-hee, were kidnapped in 1978 by agents of Kim Jong Il, and held captive in North Korea. Pulgasari was put forward in February 1985 to capitalize on the success of The Return of Godzilla (1984), and became Shin's last film made under Kim Jong Il's orders. Kim Seryun and Ri Chun-gu collaborated on the screenplay. Principal photography took place in Pyongyang from June to August 1985 on an estimated ¥200–300 million ($2–3 million) budget, making it one of the most expensive films ever produced in North Korea to that time. Some sources suggest that North Korean filmmaker Chong Gon-jo, who was given sole director credit, completed filming on behalf of Shin. A team of 15 Toho employees, including Teruyoshi Nakano, handled special effects photography from September to December.Pulgasari was previewed at Toho Studios in January 1986 and readied for release in Japan and North Korea later that year. However, the film was banned in March after Shin and Choi escaped North Korean supervision and fled to the United States, where Shin later worked on a remake. Pulgasari eventually debuted on VHS in Japan on January 21, 1995, and had its official premiere in Tokyo on July 4, 1998, to commercial success. Critical reception in Japan was positive, with many favorable comparisons to Godzilla (1998). It has since become the most-widely-seen North Korean film internationally and a cult classic. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:12 UTC on Thursday, 13 March 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Pulgasari on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Kajal.

Directed by Trey Parker & Matt Stone (South Park, Cannibal! Team America follows an elite, over-the-top task force of marionette operatives as they confront the world's most dangerous threats. The film features unforgettable moments like the explosive “America, F**k Yeah!” the country elegy "Freedom Isn't Free," the "Montage" song, & Kim Jong Il's showstopping "I'm So Ronery" along with the host of outrageous action sequences that blend crude comedy with sharp social commentary. The film also parodies famous actors and iconic Hollywood personas—taking playful jabs at stars such as Alec Baldwin, Michael Moore, Matt Damon, Tim Robbins, Susan Sarandon, George Clooney, Danny Glover, Ethan Hawke, Helen Hunt, Samuel L Jackson, Liv Tyler, Martin Sheen, Sean Penn, Ben Affleck, Julianne Moore, and others—adding an extra layer of hilarity and cultural critique. Almost a quarter century ago, South Korean President Kim Dae-jung traveled to Pyongyang to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Il for the first-ever inter-Korean summit, a watershed moment in ties between the longtime adversaries. Months later, Kim Dae-jung received the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to promote reconciliation with the DPRK and for his work for democracy and human rights in the ROK. But in the years that followed, it was revealed that Seoul had sent hundreds of millions of dollars in secret payments to North Korea, ostensibly to convince Pyongyang to agree to the summit, and a new book argues that the real total may have been as high as $3 billion. This week, veteran journalist Donald Kirk joins the podcast to discuss his book about how Kim Dae-jung arranged the secret payments and may have financed North Korea's nuclear program in the process. He talks about the South Korean activist's ambition to win the Nobel Peace Prize and how the payments were routed through the company Hyundai Asan. Kirk also touches on what he learned from his many reporting trips to the DPRK over the years, and shares his thoughts on the recent U.S. charges against North Korea expert Sue Mi Terry. Donald Kirk is a journalist who has reported on the Koreas for decades and the author of several books about Asian affairs. His latest book is “Kim Dae-jung and the Quest for the Nobel: How the President of South Korea Bought the Peace Prize and Financed Kim Jong-il's Nuclear Program.” About the podcast: The North Korea News Podcast is a weekly podcast hosted by Jacco Zwetsloot exclusively for NK News, covering all things DPRK — from news to extended interviews with leading experts and analysts in the field, along with insight from our very own journalists.

AMERICA! F**K YEAH! That's right! Team America! The RSA gang wraps up their Trey Parker and Matt Stone feature films. They wrap it up with the most American of all films, not to mention the only film in cinematic history to be made with puppetry! A satire of action film archetypes, American militarism, and the global implications of the politics of the United States, the film follows the titular paramilitary police force, who recruit a Broadway actor to assist in saving the world from Kim Jong Il and his conspiracy of Islamic terrorists and liberal Hollywood actors. Team America: World Police intertwines puppetry and miniature effects in a manner similar to Supermarionation, known for its use in the television series Thunderbirds, although Stone and Parker were not fans of that show. The duo worked on the script with former South Park writer Brady for nearly two years. The film had a troubled production, with various technical problems regarding the puppets and the scheduling extremes of finishing in time for its theatrical release. It also came into routine conflict with the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), which returned the film multiple times with an NC-17 rating due to an explicit sex scene involving puppets. Team America: World Police premiered at the Denver Film Festival on October 14, 2004, and was theatrically released in the United States the following day. The film received generally positive reviews from critics and was a modest success at the box office, grossing over $51 million worldwide on a $32 million budget.

Eunhee was an A list actress and had always had star treatment but this was a whole new level. She had a guarded mansion and millions of dollars at her disposal. Every evening, platters of shrimp, lobster, sushi, delicacies shipped in from all over the world filled an entire banquet table. It was all just for her. Every morning, a new gift was delivered for her downstairs, a fur coat, lacy lingerie, or beautiful gowns. She added them to the closet in ‘her' bedroom already stuffed to the brim. Every single piece was perfectly tailored to fit her body; her exact measurements all the way down to her undergarments. She had guards watching her every move and tending to her every need. The one condition was that - she couldn't leave… unless he called. A week into her stay - her assistant burst in through the door excited to get her ready. He had invited her to a party and she needed to look perfect. She got all dolled up and was led down to the front where she was face to face with the man who kidnapped her. Sug and Dan page through this website so you don't have to (actually, between this recording and the release of this podcast, the website has been shut down). The website is chock full of the typical praise of Kim Il Sung, Kim Jong Il, and Kim Jong Un that one would expect out of North Korea. But there's more, much more. There is news of dog breeding festivals, celebrations, and yes, a message board where people from all over the world can talk about how awesome North Korea is. How much do you know about what goes on in North Korea? Probably not much. Perhaps you think that a lot of what is said is just negative propaganda by anti-communists. But what if I told you that a Venezuelan communist was imprisoned there and got to see how horrible the prisoner treatment was up close? Now, you must be wondering... what was a Venezuelan poet doing working in North Korea? Today's story is precisely about this man and what led him there. Ali Lameda was a passionate dreamer, who believed that the world needed more of what East Germany, Romania and North Korea (among other nations) had implemented at the time. The message of Karl Marx was like music to his ears. So he decided to contribute to Kim Jong Il's cause. But he didn't expect that a slight, small criticism of what Kim's government was doing in terms of propaganda would cause him... a world of pain, both literal and even spiritual, as the North Koreans attempted to destroy the man over decades.  Does it sound horrific? Probably - but it might just have a happier ending than you think. Mount Paektu, the highest mountain on the Korean Peninsula, holds a special place in North Korea. Not only did Kim Il Sung — the country's first leader — based his anti-Japanese guerrilla campaign there, Kim Jong Il — his son and the country's second leader — was born on the mountain, according to the DPRK's dubious official history. Mount Paektu is also considered the birthplace of Dangun, the mythical founder of Korea's first kingdom. Amid the inter-Korean rapprochement of 2018, North and South Korean leaders Kim Jong Un and Moon Jae-in famously held hands and took photos atop the mountain. It's also an active volcano. Just over 1,000 years ago, Mount Paektu erupted on a scale that ranks among the largest in recorded human history. An unprecedented look inside North Korea's nuclear facilities – Ep. 276

In the early 2000s, no one outside North Korea was quite sure about the extent of the country's nuclear program, whether it had plutonium for an atomic bomb and if then-leader Kim Jong Il was willing to risk a nuclear test. That changed in 2004, when North Korea invited Siegfried Hecker, longtime chief of the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, to tour its Yongbyon Nuclear Research Center. Hecker found a nascent but highly advanced nuclear program, driven by talented scientists who acutely understood the technological processes behind plutonium reprocessing. This week, Hecker joins the NK News podcast to talk about his visits to Yongbyon and his new book exploring the DPRK's nuclear program. He explains why North Korea might prefer plutonium bombs to uranium ones, how many bombs the DPRK likely possesses and why he believes the deal put on the table at the U.S.-DPRK summit in Hanoi was the best chance to stop North Korea's nuclear program in decades. Dr. Siegfried Hecker (@SiegfriedHecker) was the fifth director of the Los Alamos National Laboratory, the premier U.S. nuclear research facility. He is also a senior fellow and professor emeritus at Stanford University. His new book “Hinge Points: An Inside Look at North Korea's Nuclear Program” is now available. About the podcast: The North Korea News Podcast is a weekly podcast hosted by Jacco Zwetsloot (@JaccoZed) exclusively for NK News, covering all things DPRK — from news to extended interviews with leading experts and analysts in the field, along with insight from our very own journalists.
