In this episode, we seek to learn more about two poets by having the two duel! This time, we look at two poets read in translation. Allen Ginsberg once asked in “A Supermarket in California,” “and you. Garcia Lorca, what were you doing down by the watermelons?” and this episode seeks to find out by looking at Federico García Lorca. Tomas Gösta Tranströmer's The Blue House goes toe-to-toe with Lorca. Add in a totally unrelated chocolate tasting and you have an episode to satisfy the poetry sweet tooth! At the table:Katie DozierTimothy Green

Balance of Joy and Money: Leveraging financial capital as a support system for achieving a fulfilling and joyful life. Redefining Freedom: The paradox of freedom, which includes meaningful relationships and not just the absence of obligations. Notable Quotes: Greg McKeown: "The comfortable life is not an attainable place. That doesn't mean you can't find a sweet spot. But that sweet spot's more like adventure than it is comfort and freedom from all obligation." James Rhee: "Your balance sheet will show me exactly how you've actually lived your life." James Rhee: "Having freedom, paradoxically, means you have to have really good relationships to share that freedom with people that time with." Greg McKeown: "Ever-deepening relationships with those few people that matter most is the only thing in life.” Resources: James Rhee's Book: Red Helicopter: A Parable for Our Times Greg McKeown's Book: Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less TED Talk by James Rhee: "The Value of Kindness at Work" Join my weekly newsletter. Along the way, we think about all the footage we're creating every day on our smartphones and social media feeds, and how that might very well be documenting the horrors that constantly surrounds us. Katherine Gaffney completed her MFA at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and is currently working on her PhD at the University of Southern Mississippi. Her work has previously appeared or is forthcoming in Best New Poets, jubilat, Harpur Palate, Mississippi Review, Meridian, Harpur Palate, and elsewhere. She has attended Tin House's Summer Writing Workshop (2014), Sundress Publications' SAFTA Residency in (2021), and was a scholar at the Sewanee Writers' Conference (2022). Her first chapbook, Once Read as Ruin, was published by Finishing Line Press. Her first full-length collection, Fool in a Blue House, won the 2022 Tampa Review Prize for Poetry. She lives and teaches in Champaign, Illinois. Fool in a Blue House (U Tampa Press, 2023) crafts carefully appointed rooms, both interior and exterior, alongside familial and romantic love, loss and near loss of beloveds, selves, and even neighborhood rabbits. Dwelling in contradictions-strength and fragility, humor and heartbreak, safety and threat-this book ponders impossibilities as solutions to its own predicaments, "Perhaps it would be easier to write in a chorus." But these poems know that this is not the cure. These impossibilities are simply "a whole herring" dropped down a throat, a momentary pause before we dare "to defy what the sky tells us" and instead begin to tell "ourselves that we can will the sky to give." Thanks to the efforts of renowned Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, Leon Trotsky gained political asylum in Mexico. In early 1937, the Russian revolutionary moved in with the painter and his wife, Frida Kahlo, at the Blue House on the outskirts of the Mexican capital. A torrid drama ensued, in which Trotsky betrayed his benefactor, at great risk to his own safety. Show notes and full transcripts available at www.artofcrimepodcast.com. Frida Kahlo was a master of self portraits. Her uncompromising oil paintings, always deeply personal, dealt with identity, the human body and death. It wasn't until after her own death that she was regarded as a revolutionary artist. In hindsight, it's easy to see how The Two Fridas can be reconciled into one extraordinary woman. At 3841 18th Street in San Francisco's Castro neighborhood sits a light blue Victorian, not unlike the countless other homes of that style in the city. Except this one is a major tourist destination—if you're French, that is. What makes this particular Blue House so special? We turn to NPR Culture Correspondent Chloe Veltman (who is half French herself) for the the very musical answer to this question. The third episode, "Trouble in the Blue House," dissects the corruption scandal often called "South Korea's Watergate." When former President Park Geun-hye was first elected in 2013, she held widespread conservative support and was internationally celebrated as the country's first female president. No one could have predicted that just 5 years later, she would end up embroiled in a corruption case that would leave her disgraced, impeached, and sentenced to 20 years in prison. Although not without its controversy, Park Geun-hye's impeachment shows how anti-corruption movements can pursue accountability and reform while protecting democratic norms.

In the routines and hustle of life, it can be easy to gloss over those we don't have much — or any — interaction with. However, love goes out of its own way to be consciously aware of all.

Embrace Your Youier – El Edwards pt 2 How many of you have entered into a relationship and just knew in your heart that this what you were meant for? This is what God has designed for you? And now, you're living the dream! At least until you start getting stuck in the mud and facing the mundane? You put on a good show, but you know in your heart that it is all a façade. God knows your putting on a show, too. Others around you, including your family, may not know it – but God does. Any hands? Well, my guest today lived that type of life. She grew up in a Christian home. She was figuring out what she wanted to do with her life. It went from medicine to pharmacy to music. She was going to go to a prestigious school of music but – fell in love. Every Sunday in church, she told God she would start to read His Word on a more frequent basis. Leave church, only to come back the next week and repeat the same promise! (Does that sound familiar? Don't shout me down when I'm preaching good)! Eleanor Edwards is that woman and she on a mission to help you move from “be you” to “Youier!” To embrace who you are when you're not trying to live by anyone else's expectations and to step into the incredible story God has written for your life. She is an author of several books, including one by the same title, “Youier – Fully Alive, Fully Human.” She has a podcast by the same name, “Youier,” and has a social community called “The Blue House” for daily encouragement, accountability and prayer requests. Amen! She wants to help others to step into the plan and purpose God has for them and to have a great time doing it! Amen! This is part two of a great two part interview! I loved when I saw that you believe you can have a regular conversation with God, just like you can with your best friend. I believe the same way it just elevated my Faith to a new level and allowed God to work in my life in ways I could not have imagined. I was listening to a couple of your episodes and you recently announced the end of the “Youier Podcast” at the end of 2022. Why? Share with us a little about your online community, the “Blue House…” Inside “The Blue House” is the “Rainbow Room.” Can you tell us what this is all about? You have written quite a few books as well. I think I seen one that was released back in 2015 or 2016, correct? The latest is “Youier – Fully Alive, Fully Human.” Can you share a bit about that book with us? El, this has really been interesting and you are a fun guest to have. If someone wanted to reach out to you, to ask a question, get more information or maybe even to do an interview such as this, how can they do that? How can someone get in touch with you? Your books, especially your latest book, “Youier – Fully Alive, Fully Human,” how can someone obtain a copy of your book? I is it on Amazon? All your books are on Amazon, correct? I'll put links to all of this in the show notes below. Folks, as you have heard, El Edwards is on fire for God! Amen! And she is dedicated, no – called – to help others realize they...
Embrace Your Youier – El Edwards pt 1 How many of you have entered into a relationship and just knew in your heart that this what you were meant for? Amen! First question I always start with is this. Other than that brief information I just shared, can you tell us in your own words, “Who is El Edwards?” Now, just to be clear, explain the phrase, “Youier!” for us… Let's go back a bit. As I was preparing for today's program, you caught my attention with your “origin story” of being “scared out of hell” at the age of 12 or 13. Can you share what happened and how that changed your life? You were in your 20's when you were, “loved into Heaven.” Share that story with us… How did that change your perspective on life? I loved when I saw that you believe you can have a regular conversation with God, just like you can with your best friend. I believe the same way it just elevated my Faith to a new level and allowed God to work in my life in ways I could not have imagined. Folks, as you have heard, El Edwards is on fire for God! Amen! And she is dedicated, no – called – to help others realize they can be just as on fire for God as she is! Glory to God! I want to encourage you to drop down into the show notes and get in touch with El. Join her “Blue House” program. Start to realize some of the potential that God has planned for you – as El Edwards shares, “…to step into the incredible story God's written for your life!” Amen! Drop down into the show notes, click the links right there and reach out to El. And be sure to click the link for her latest book, “Youier – Fully Alive, Fully Human.” CONTACT INFORMATION:
