In this newscast: A Juneau woman died after she was shot and killed by a Juneau Police officer in the parking lot of the Mendenhall Valley Breeze In convenience store early Christmas morning; The small Southeast Alaska town of Gustavus is hosting a food drive this weekend. And it's getting a boost from the Juneau food bank. The drive is the first step in plans to open up a new, permanent food pantry – something the town doesn't have yet. But organizers say it's something Gustavus desperately needs; Finding affordable housing in Anchorage is a challenge, and housing experts are looking for solutions. One idea is making it easier for people to live in multigenerational homes. That can help solve the housing shortage by increasing density- fitting more people into one lot of land. But there are other benefits too- like allowing residents to age in place.

"Godfrey Gordon Gustavus Gore" by William Brighty Rands   Godfrey Gordon Gustavus Gore —No doubt you have heard the name before —Was a boy who never would shut a door! The wind might whistle, the wind might roar,And teeth be aching and throats be sore,But still he never would shut the door. His father would beg, his mother implore,"Godfrey Gordon Gustavus Gore,We really do wish you would shut the door!" Their hands they wrung, their hair they tore; But Godfrey Gordon Gustavus GoreWas deaf as the buoy out at the Nore. When he walked forth the folks would roar,"Godfrey Gordon Gustavus Gore,Why don't you think to shut the door?" They rigged up a Shutter with sail and oar,And threatened to pack off Gustavus GoreOn a voyage of penance to Singapore. But he begged for mercy and said, "No more!Pray do not send me to SingaporeOn a Shutter, and then I will shut the door!" "You will?" said his parents; "then keep on shore! But mind you do! For the plague is soreOf a fellow that never will shut the door,Godfrey Gordon Gustavus Gore!" Hi, I'm Grace, and this is the Peter Piper Picked a Peck of Pickled Poems Podcast. Professor Greg Kaster's love for learning and deep appreciation for the people around him left an indelible mark on Gustavus Adolphus College, creating a lasting legacy beyond the classroom. This past summer, on June 22, 2024, Greg unexpectedly passed away. In this episode, Carley, who worked closely with Greg on his podcast, interviewed professors who knew him well. She spoke with his colleagues in the History Department, Professors Kate Aguilar, Kate Keller, Glenn Kranking, Maddalena Marinari, and David Tobaru Obermiller as well as a few colleagues from across campus: Jennifer Ackil (Psychological Sciences), Jill Locke (Political Science), and Eric Vrooman (English). They all reflected on his passion for fostering a rich intellectual community. Greg's legacy was not just in his work but in how he engaged with, inspired, and learned from those around him. Whether collaborating on projects, mentoring students, or discussing history, he nurtured a spirit of curiosity and respect that made everyone feel valued. His dedication to the pursuit of knowledge and his genuine care for others will forever be remembered as a hallmark of his time at Gustavus.

For ad-free listening, subscribe to the Into History Podcast Channel, at intohistory.com/shipwreckspod.The Vasa was a massive warship commissioned by King Gustav II Adolph of Sweden in the early 17th century. Designed to be the pride of the Swedish Navy, construction began in 1626 at the Royal Shipyard in Stockholm, under the supervision of master shipwright Henrik Hybertsson. The Vasa was intended to be a symbol of Sweden's military power and ambition in the Baltic region, with a total of 64 guns arranged on two decks. Its design incorporated the latest advancements in naval architecture, including a sleek hull and a high concentration of firepower. However, the Vasa's inaugural voyage was marked by tragedy. On August 10, 1628, the ship set sail from Stockholm's harbor amid great fanfare. But just minutes into the journey, a gust of wind caught the ship's sails, causing it to roll precariously. Water began to rush in through the open gun ports, and the ship quickly sank to the bottom of the harbor. It was a devastating loss for Sweden, with over 30 crew members perishing in the disaster. The Vasa lay submerged for over three centuries, until it was rediscovered in the 1950s and eventually salvaged in 1961. Today, the Vasa is one of Sweden's most popular tourist attractions, attracting millions of visitors each year to the Vasa Museum in Stockholm.Follow Shipwrecks and Sea Dogs on social media @shipwreckspod or at shipwrecksandseadogs.com.Official merchandise is available at https://www.bonfire.com/store/shipwreckspod/.Original theme music is by Sean Sigfried, and you can follow him on YouTube @SeanSecret or at https://sean.sigfried.se.

It underscored two flaws: The Twins are starting to prepare for the future while this year's outcome is very much in doubt, and they lack the trusted bullpen arms to make those decisions in high-leverage games. 8:00: The Lynx won 91-86 over Dallas on Tuesday at Target Center, a game that became heated at the end with a player ejection, fan ejections and opponent calling the home crowd "disgusting." 11:00: Star Tribune writer and editor Jeff Day joins host Michael Rand for a look ahead to the Gophers volleyball season that starts Friday. Crude Conversations

In this one, Cody talks to Geoff and Marcy Larson of Alaskan Brewing. Geoff and Marcy opened the brewery in 1986. Back then, Geoff says that craft beer was a novel idea — only a fraction of beers that were consumed were craft beers. He says that, altogether, there were probably only 100 breweries in the entire country. So, there was a lot of education involved in those early days — learning about the craft of brewing and also teaching it to others. But before they could focus on the beer, they needed to raise money for the whole operation. Both of them come from families that have rocky relationships with alcohol — both have lost family members because of it. So, they knew their families wouldn't really like the idea of them starting a brewery. So, they needed to find investors. 88 small investors became integral to the start-up of Alaskan Brewing. Of those original investors, around 63 are still involved.   From the beginning, they wanted their beer to represent Alaska. To be something Alaskans were proud of and that accurately represented the state to the rest of the beer-drinking world. Many times, they've gotten ideas for graphics and for brewing from their time in nature and from being around other Alaskans. For example, they have a cabin in Gustavus where they go to relax. And with help from residents of the town, it's also where they harvest the spruce tips they use in their beer.   They're both adamant about how lucky they are and about how much help they've had along the way. Marcy says that the fishing fleet in Juneau was largely responsible for introducing their beer to people outside of Alaska because after they were done commercial fishing for the season, they would spend their winters in cities like Seattle. They'd pack up all the Alaskan beer they could fit on their boats, head south and then share it with their friends and families. To this day, it's still surprising for Geoff and Marcy to see one of their beers outside of Alaska, in the hands of someone they don't know.
