Notre histoire commence aujourd'hui au petit matin, durant un de ces jours de brume dont seul le Maryland peut avoir le secret. Dans les rues de Baltimore qui se réveillent, Joseph W. Walker, son journal sous le bras, se dirige vers son domicile. De haute stature, les yeux verts perçants, à la manière d'un chat, il se faufile dans le brouillard et semble presque voler de pavé en pavé. Pour rejoindre sa petite habitation située à quelques pâtés de maison, il lui faut passer dans certaines des rues les plus malfamées de la grande ville de Baltimore. Il les connaît, et surtout, l'homme sait comment éviter les mauvaises fréquentations. Il doit absolument se contenter de baisser la tête, et ne jamais trop regarder ceux qu'il peut y croiser. À côté de lui, certains ivrognes en mal de boisson l'apostrophent. Mais caché derrière sa barbe grisonnante et son chapeau enfoncé sur ses yeux, Walker se contente de passer, disparaît derrière les lampadaires, couvert par la brume, et avance ainsi de rue en rue. Rien ne lui semble plus difficile ce matin que les jours précédents. Les calèches dans les rues, les gens qui font la manche, les prostituées qui, petit à petit et dès le petit matin, prennent leur place sur le trottoir. La vie habituelle des bas quartiers. À un détail près. Là, un peu plus loin, étalé au sol, un homme qui bouge à peine semble en détresse. Walker est un profond humaniste. bien. Ses principes le poussent à venir en aide à cet homme. En se penchant vers lui, il pose la main sur l'épaule de cet inconnu qui porte des vêtements sales et décousus, trop grands pour lui. Walker cherche à voir son visage, pour vérifier s'il est conscient. Lorsqu'il le retourne, c'est le choc. Instantanément. Cet inconnu au seuil de la mort, il le connaît. Très bien, même. C'est l'auteur préféré de sa femme. Walker ne peut contenir un cri de détresse qui claque dans la brume et résonne contre les murs avoisinants : « MAIS C'EST EDGAR ALLAN POE ! » Cette rencontre - ce sauvetage, si on peut l'appeler comme ça - est le point de départ d'un mystère vieux de plus de 170 ans...
