Buddy Guy put out an album in 1991 called Damn Right I Got The Blues. The song sounds like so much of a form of catharsis. However, blues can also represent a form of celebration. There's pre-war country blues, jump blues, swamp blues.... There's blues styles from Chicago, Texas, Louisiana and other American regions. The blues is not one thing. It's old...it's contemporary. It's relaxed...it's heart pumping. It has old and young practitioners. It has iconic practitioners and some bloke playing it at your local pub. Welcome to episode 169 of Love That Album. Obviously, the most famous blues musicians are those from the US and from the UK. Here in Australia, however, there's been a long tradition of musicians who've devoted themselves to the blues, be it through the pre-war stylings of The Paramount Trio, the Chicago style of Collard Greens and Gravy or....the hard-boogie style of Carson. Blues lovers here believe that there is something uniquely Australian about how blues is performed here....tyranny of distance making it gritty or something like that. In 2019, artist and blues lover Pauline Bailey took it upon herself to record an oral history of Australian blues by speaking to a plethora (as Max Crawdaddy would have it) of musicians about their connection to local blues music. In 2023, Pauline has just released Volume 4 of these incredible books with no intention of stopping. Many are well known (Diesel, Jeff Lang, Ross Wilson, Mal Eastick, Mike Rudd), some not so much......all have fascinating stories to tell about how music came into their lives, how they've pursued it, and where it took them. These books are an invaluable resource into a side of Australian music history not previously tackled. The books even feature chapters devoted to some past LTA guests (Shane Pacey, Charles Jenkins, Anthony Shortte, Sarah Carroll, and Chris Wilson). My huge thanks to Pauline for joining me to discuss her work and her devotion to the music and stylists she's immortalised in print. As we wrap up our week on loving people, we look today at how we can love the Church as God does. Jesus says we will be known by the way we love each other. Would people know you're a Christian by the way you love your brothers and sisters? People are messy, it's true. We all are. And yet Jesus saw our worth and loved us in the midst of our messiness. How can you mimic that same love today as you seek to love his Church? Today we'll look at the perspective and affections of Jesus for his people. May our hearts and minds be transformed as a result. Our Scripture for today comes from John 13:35. Today's worship is Days of Elijah by Charles Jenkins. --

On today's 126th episode of The Thriller Zone, I'm excited to welcome New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post and #1 Amazon Bestselling Author of over two dozen riveting thrillers!Bob's been a talent I've dreamt of having on the show for a very long time; at least since I launched this podcast nearly two years ago. Finally, we have time to sit down and discuss his prolific body of work. It includes: The Tracy Crosswhite police series, the Charles Jenkins espionage series, the David Sloane legal thriller series, plus several stand-alone novels. But the Big News of Today is the launch of his fourth series starring Keera Duggan, a former chess prodigy who's recently left her job as a Seattle prosecutor after a romantic relationship with a senior colleague ended badly. She returns to her family's failing criminal defense law firm, which is being driven into the ground by her alcoholic father, in hopes of restoring her family's reputation and her career.I'll save the rest of the details for YOU to discover. Just let me say, you won't be able to put this legal thriller down; it's flat-out fantastic! In fact, once you read Bob's work, you, like I, will quickly discover a favorite new author for your bookshelves. The book dropped yesterday (3.28), and you might as well order a copy now.Episode Summary:We discuss our mutual appreciation for the craft of writing, studying the works of great authors like Stephen King, and how Bob's background in law has taught him the importance of discipline in his writing routine. We explore the art of editing and the importance of cutting unnecessary content, as well as the challenges of quieting the inner critic while writing. We also discuss the process of weaving a chess game throughout a novel, the importance of adaptability and intuition in both the game and the legal profession, and the humbling experience of receiving praise from fellow authors. Finally, we share personal stories and powerful lessons learned from our fathers, the importance of following our dreams, and valuable advice for aspiring writers. Don't miss this heartfelt and captivating conversation! To learn more about Bob visit: RobertDugoniBooks.com and follow him on Twitter @robertdugoni.As always, we welcome you to SUBSCRIBE to our YouTube.com Channel @thethrillerzone, as well as FOLLOW up on both Twitter and Instagram @thethrillerzone, and of course visit our website: TheThrillerZone.comBREAKDOWN:Chapters:(0:00:06) - Storytelling With Robert Dugoni(0:05:28) - Exploring Family Dysfunction Through Storytelling(0:17:40) - The Art of Editing(0:28:15) - Benefits of Being Attorney(0:37:10) - Following Your Dreams WritingChapter Summaries:(0:00:06) - Storytelling With Robert Dugoni (5 Minutes)Welcome to the Thriller Zone! In this episode, I have the pleasure of talking with Robert Dugoni about his latest Her Deadly game. Bob shares his work ethic, emphasizing the importance of working every day and how his background in law has taught him to be disciplined in his writing routine. We also delve into Bob's early love for storytelling, sparked by his experiences in seventh grade and his mother's influence in introducing him to literature at a young age.(0:05:28) - Exploring Family Dysfunction Through Storytelling (12 Minutes)In this captivating conversation, we delve into the origins of my passion for writing, starting with a speech on slavery in the seventh grade that left my classmates in stunned silence. We also discuss the various awards I've won, such as the Nancy Pearl Award for Fiction and the Friends of Mystery Spotted Owl Award, but highlight that my true gratification comes from receiving heartfelt emails from readers who've been touched by my stories.(0:17:40) - The Art of Editing (11 Minutes)Exploring the art of editing and the importance of cutting unnecessary content, we discuss how the process of writing organically and letting characters guide the story can lead to surprising results. We also touch on the challenges of quieting the inner critic while writing and learning from the structure and emotional moments in storytelling. Furthermore, we dive into the process of weaving a chess game throughout a novel, highlighting the importance of adaptability and intuition in both the game and the legal profession.(0:28:15) - Benefits of Being Attorney (9 Minutes)Diving into the relationship between being an attorney and a skilled novelist, we discuss the importance of storytelling in both professions. From courtroom dramas to compelling novels, the ability to captivate an audience and tell a story is crucial. (0:37:10) - Following Your Dreams Writing (9 Minutes)We share personal stories and the powerful lessons learned from our fathers. We discuss how loyalty, following our dreams, and not waiting to pursue passions have shaped our lives and careers. In our final day of this week-long series seeking to put our faith to action, today we're going to look at the victory we have in God's love. As God's people, he's inviting us into his victory, a victory we so desperately need. May God establish us in his power today, and may chains fall off us and others as God guides us into a lifestyle of victory in him. Our Scripture for today comes from Romans 8:37-39, and today's worship is Till I Found You by Charles Jenkins. -- Faith doesn't happen on its own. It's a byproduct of time spent experiencing the faithfulness of our God. It's a gift given to us by the Giver of good gifts, himself. It was a supernatural faith that allowed Paul to sing even while in chains. It was supernatural faith that allowed Peter to proclaim the gospel, even unto death. And it's supernatural faith that will carry you to and through the greatest gospel opportunities in front of you. We pray our printed devotionals, Faith and Trust, help people like you experience the life changing reality that faith and trust have on your everyday life. With Faith you'll: Discover a Biblical framework for living faithfully Study powerful moments of God's faithfulness in scripture Tear down personal strongholds in your life where you struggle with faith Develop a lifestyle of faith, that weathers the storms of life And every dollar you give today goes to help more people like you experience the nearness and love of our God. Everything changes when we learn to trust and become filled with faith in our good, good God. Get your copy at supportfirst15.org!
Three books to get you started for Summer readingBlood Royal: A True Tale of Crime and Detection in Medieval ParisBy Eric Jager First published February 25, 2014On a chilly November night in 1407, Louis of Orleans was murdered by a band of masked men. The crime stunned and paralyzed France since Louis had often ruled in place of his brother King Charles, who had gone mad. As panic seized Paris, an investigation began. In charge was the Provost of Paris, Guillaume de Tignonville, the city's chief law enforcement officer -- and one of history's first detectives. As de Tignonville began to investigate, he realized that his hunt for the truth was much more dangerous than he ever could have imagined.A rich portrait of a distant world, Blood Royal is a gripping story of conspiracy, crime and an increasingly desperate hunt for the truth. And in Guillaume de Tignonville, we have an unforgettable detective for the ages, a classic gumshoe for a cobblestoned era.Charles Jenkins #3 The Silent SistersBy Robert Dugoni Published March 8, 2022 by Thomas & MercerAfter a harrowing escape from Russian agents on his last mission, Charles Jenkins thinks he's finally done with the spy game. But then the final two of the seven sisters—American assets who have been deep undercover in Russia for decades—cut off all communication with their handlers. Are they in hiding after detecting surveillance? Or have they turned and become double agents? It's Jenkins's duty to find out, but he's been added to a Russian kill list. It will require all of Jenkins's knowledge of spycraft—and an array of disguises—to return to the country undetected. But plans go awry his first night in Moscow when Jenkins gets involved in an altercation that ends in the death of the son of one of Russia's most powerful organized crime leaders. Pursued by mafia henchmen, Russian agents, and a particularly dogged Moscow police detective, Jenkins is determined to track down the final two sisters and get them to America—or die trying. As various forces close in, Jenkins fears this time he might've pushed his luck too far.Dry Heat: A NovelBy Len Joy PublishedMarch 1, 2022 by BQB PublishingThe high school bonfire is supposed to be the kickoff to a great night: Joey has just won a football scholarship and he's hoping for a sex breakthrough with his new girlfriend. Our Scripture for today comes from John 13:35, and today's worship is Days of Elijah by Charles Jenkins. On Sunday, April 24, the independent Amazon Labor Union held a rally outside the JFK8 fulfillment center on Staten Island, New York, where, just one month ago, workers shocked the world by becoming the first Amazon workforce in the US to successfully vote to unionize. With supporters from organized labor and the surrounding community showing up in full force, along with high-profile appearances from Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, worker-organizers with the ALU showed their support for their coworkers at the LDJ5 sorting center, another facility in the same complex that is voting in their own union election this week. If LDJ5 becomes the second Amazon facility to unionize, it will prove that what happened at JFK8 was not a fluke, but the beginning of a historic movement to unionize the second largest private employer in the US and one of the most powerful corporations in the world. In this special episode, we put together a compilation of speeches from the rally along with interviews Max conducted on the ground with Amazon workers and other special guests. Speakers/interviewees include: Christian Smalls, president of the Amazon Labor Union; Derrick Palmer, vice president of organizing for the Amazon Labor Union; Jordan Flowers, cofounder of the Congress of Essential Workers and the Amazon Labor Union; Senator Bernie Sanders; Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez; Karen Ponce, interim secretary of the Amazon Labor Union; Julian Mitchell-Israel, LDJ5 Amazon worker, field organizer for the Amazon Labor Union; Maddie Wesley, LDJ5 Amazon worker, treasurer of the Amazon Labor Union; Kshama Sawant, (socialist) Seattle City Council Member; Sara Nelson, international president of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, AFL-CIO; Charles Jenkins, elected officer of the Transport Worker Union Local 100 and president of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists (CBTU) NY Chapter; Brittany Ramos DeBarros, candidate for Congress in New York's 11th District; Luis Feliz Leon, staff writer and organizer for Labor Notes; Michelle Valentin Nieves, worker-organizer with the Amazon Labor Union.
