We will be going through Apologetics at the Cross: An Introduction for Christian Witness by by Joshua D. Chatraw and Mark D. Allen. Today Ethan gives a presentation on different apologetic methodologies in Scripture. Even though we live in a very different age than when scripture was written and we operate under different plausibility structures (see part 1), the methods we see demonstrated in Scripture are still important to know because many of them can be adapted for our modern context. Welcome to the Shieldwall Podcast! Today we begin a multi-part series on apologetics called Apologetics at the Cross. We will be going through Apologetics at the Cross: An Introduction for Christian Witness by by Joshua D. Chatraw and Mark D. Allen. Today we have the introduction to this series, given by Kevin Richard. Kevin is a PhD from Liberty Univsersity in Apologetics and brings a wealth of wisdom and experience on our topic. He gives us an introduction to what apologetics is and where we find ourselves culturally and philosophically in America in 2020. The world view of today is much different than it was 100 years ago. Kevin introduces a term called plausibility structures to categorize and explain what is happening in our country. The average person (who is not religious) doesn't believe that there is a higher power that created the universe and instills it with value and purpose. They don't even believe this is plausible. How did this happen? Kevin answers that for us!   For more information on who we are check out: https://www.tgcnorfolk.com/ https://www.facebook.com/gracecollectivenorfolk/ https://coalescencecoffee.com/ https://www.facebook.com/coalescencecoffee/   Did you enjoy our podcast? Filter: Biblical Clarity in a Confusing World

In every age, the Christian faith faces challenges from opponents within the surrounding culture. It is the task of believers in every period to craft reasonable, persuasive responses to these questions and doubts. Apologetics is the discipline of defending, commending, and communicating the faith. This episode will help you to understand the main biblical text for apologetics and the various uses for apologetics. You will learn how we can utilize a variety of tools to do apologetics, as well as what is the most important thing in Christian apologetics. Show Highlights “Apologetics… is the practice of offering an appeal and a defense for the Christian faith. In other words, apologetics, through word and deed, answers both why a person can believe (defense) and why a person should believe (appeal)” - Joshua Chatraw and Mark Allen Apologetics is useful for defending the faith from attacks, commending the faith to hearers, communicating the faith to unbelievers and more. The tools at the apologist's disposal are more than rational arguments but also include scientific and historical evidence, storytelling, and more. Our concern in apologetics should also include a focus on our character and manners before the world. The three most important character traits for Christian Apologetics. Coram Deo Church — Bremerton, WA

Understanding the textUnfortunately, many Christians approach the Church with a consumer mentality. Once a local church fails to provide the desired goods, they move on to another church, which only perpetuates Christian immaturity. Peter sees the Church very differently. Because of our objective unity in Christ, we can not give up on each other. Rather we are to imitate Christ with “sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind” (1 Peter 3:8). Through this, the Church is built up and sanctified. But our love is also the supreme apologetic to the onlooking and skeptical world. We tend to think of apologetics in terms of well thought out and formulated arguments for faith in Jesus. While that is important, time and time again, the New Testament reminds us that genuine, sacrificial, gospel-motivated love for others is the authenticating sign of our discipleship. Additional scripture1. John 13:352. Matthew 22:34-403. 1 John 3:11-16"The Church is both a living apologetic appeal and the formative context out of which apologetic arguments are supported as plausible."—Joshua D. ChatrawApplying the text1. What role did meaningful relationships with Christians play in your own conversion?2. Why is love such a powerful argument for the gospel of Jesus Christ?3. What does this text assume about the presence and purpose of Christians and the Church in the world?
