Rev. Jason Braaten welcomes back Rev. John Bussman to work through the CTCR's December 2025 report, "The Proper Administration of the Lord's Supper: Applying Scripture and the Confessions to Contemporary Issues." Prompted by 2023 Synod Convention resolutions, the report addresses three practices that have crept into LCMS congregations: substituting grape juice for wine, using prepackaged communion elements, and substituting non-wheat bread for those with gluten intolerance. Braaten and Bussman walk through each section, weighing the report's appeal to the words of institution and the Lutheran Confessions against its reluctance to flatly call these practices illegitimate. They discuss why clarity—not nuance—serves the truth, how exceptions tend to become rules, and what faithful, pastoral care looks like when a congregation's practice doesn't match Christ's institution. A frank conversation for pastors who want to know not just what the document says, but where it falls short. ----more---- Host: Fr. Jason Braaten Guest: Fr. John Bussman ----more---- Become a Patron! Today on Uncommon Sense, we're discussing the tragic state of the modern world. From the protests in Ireland to growing frustration across Western nations, many people feel as though their voices are no longer being heard by the institutions that claim to represent them. I'll share why I support the right of people to protest and why I believe the demonstrations in Ireland have resonated with so many people around the world. We'll also discuss what I see as a deeper spiritual crisis affecting modern society. Many of the political, cultural, and social problems we face today are symptoms of a broader moral and spiritual decline, one that cannot be solved through politics alone. In this episode:My thoughts on the protests in IrelandWhy so many citizens now feel disconnected from their governmentsThe growing divide between ordinary people and powerful institutionsThe role of faith, morality, and personal responsibility in rebuilding societyWhy I believe many of today's crises point to a deeper spiritual battleWhether you agree or disagree, this episode is an invitation to think critically about the direction of our culture, our governments, and our future.--https://www.youversion.com/bible-app

Business As Missions (BAM) has been the darling and the bane of attempts to reach "closed" countries with the Gospel. As Greg Livingstone has said, "You are either a job taker, a job maker, or a job faker." Most BAM out in the wild is job faking. While there is good work to be done by sincere Christians creating God-honoring businesses, they are rarely aimed at the end goal of establishing and strengthening indigenous local churches. However, we all need to understand BAM to interact with it. We've got more in Missions on Point and Propempo.com on BAM.

In this thought-provoking discussion, we explore the delicate balance between parental guidance and allowing our children to develop their own faith journey. The conversation draws parallels to the biblical story of Joshua and Rahab, reminding us that God's plan often unfolds in unexpected ways. We're challenged to consider how we can create a safe space for open dialogue about faith, values, and life's complexities within our families. The use of tools like conversation boxes and games to facilitate these discussions offers practical ways for us to engage with our loved ones on deeper spiritual matters. As we reflect on this, we're encouraged to examine our own approach to parenting and mentoring, always seeking to lead with love, wisdom, and an understanding that God's grace extends to all of us in our imperfections. - Connect with: Pastor Aaron Levy https://www.instagram.com/_aaronlevy/ Pastor Sanaz Mesa https://www.instagram.com/sanazmesa/?hl=en Pastor Erica Levy https://www.instagram.com/erica.levy_np/ Nancy Navas https://www.instagram.com/nancysnavas/ -- Don't forget to stay connected with us: Youtube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4OvpFp9OB9_DgVdVVbXhFg Instagram https://www.instagram.com/beyond.theletter/ Tik Tok https://www.tiktok.com/discover/beyond-the-letter -- Have a question? Presidential pardons are in the headlines again after President Joe Biden's pardon of his son Hunter. But the vast majority of presidents have used this awesome power, which was enshrined in the Constitution at the founding of the country and dates back to 7th Century English monarchs. What are the issues at play with modern presidential pardons? What does history tell us about this practice? Our guest this week is Stanford Law Professor Bernie Meyler, a scholar of British and American constitutional law and of law and the humanities and author of the book Theaters of Pardoning. She joins Pam and Rich for a discussion of high-profile pardons like Hunter Biden and Donald Trump's allies to broader issues of mercy, justice reform, the implications of pardons in polarized politics, their historical roots, and ideas for reform. The conversation pivots to notable recent pardons, including Hunter Biden's, sparking a discussion about blanket pardons versus specific ones and their implications on guilt and historical accountability.(00:14:24) Chapter 3: Pardons, Polarization, and Public Perception The discussion shifts to the broader context of pardons, their declining use, and the influence of public opinion. The hosts analyze the risks of granting pardons and compare historical uses of the power, such as Washington's Whiskey Rebellion pardons, to modern examples like January 6th.(00:21:02) Chapter 4: Reforming the Pardon Process in a Divided Society The group explores potential reforms to the pardon process, suggesting ways to make it more democratic and transparent. The two dive into the realities of her day-to-day life, intense schedule, and dedication to staying connected with communities across the country. With only days left until Election Day, she reflects on the gravity of her role, her vision for the country, and the importance of mobilizing voters. This episode showcases Vice President Harris's resilience, humor, and commitment to making a lasting impact for future generations. Key issues and policy considerations affecting communities across the country are at the forefront of the conversation. They discuss essential topics, including workers' rights, corporate practices, and historical injustices that have disadvantaged Black communities. From Donald Trump's discriminatory landlord practices, his involvement in the Central Park Five case, and his racially charged birtherism against President Obama, they shift to contemporary issues facing marginalized communities. Vice President Harris speaks candidly about economic disparities, noting her focus on combating inflation, housing, and price gouging while supporting affordable housing and small business initiatives. She emphasizes the need for policies that protect Social Security, ensure accessible healthcare, and address health disparities affecting Black men, particularly in colon and prostate cancer screenings. With Election Day approaching, she stresses the significance of the upcoming choice, advocating for leaders dedicated to working and middle-class families over self-serving interests. Important topics like immigration reform come into focus as the conversation unfolds. Hero or Villain? These archetypal characters are the stock-in-trade of the fantasy genre, and so you’ll definitely enjoy this newest poetry anthology compiled by Ana Sampson, an experienced curator of poetry collections, and illustrated by the instantly recognizable pencil of Chris Riddell, multi-award-winning illustrator and former UK Children's Laureate. Today on Mythmakers, in conversation with Julia Golding, Ana and Chris journey through history and genres, unearthing the gems. They reflect on the poems that inspired them as children, the role of compendiums in nurturing the artistic imagination, and why different approaches are often used to tell the same tale. They also explore the influence of politics on the anthology—and vice versa, and so much more. And if that wasn’t enough, Chris treats us to a live dragon sketch while several poems are read aloud—making this a truly unmissable episode! Their book, Heroes and Villains: Poems about Legends (Macmillan), is available for purchase now. Renowned Christian philosopher and theologian Dr. Paul Copan joins us to explore our shared values and address the ethical questions people are faced with when reading the Bible. He discusses how modern readers often overlook the Torah's revolutionary impact by viewing it solely through a contemporary lens, which strips it of historical context. Together, we examine the Mosaic laws in contrast to other ancient laws, like the Code of Hammurabi, revealing just how transformative the Torah was within its pagan surroundings. Dr. Copan shares his approach to interpreting morally challenging passages, applying a “charitability and Golden Rule” perspective that uncovers the depths in the Torah's narratives. Dr. Copan provides a nuanced understanding focused on careful textual analysis. He highlights the Bible's distinct stance on slavery, distinguishing it from the brutal chattel slavery of later times and showing how Judeo-Christian values contributed to its eventual abolition. Naysayers and skeptics are challenged to rethink their preconceived notions about the Torah, especially regarding topics like divine justice, slavery, capital punishment, the Wayward Son, the Sotah ritual, and other often misunderstood sections. What are we to make of what appears to be God's call to wipe out Canaanites and Amalekites? How do we understand the massive loss of life decreed by God in the Great Flood and the death of the Egyptian first-born? This is a discussion you don't want to miss. --- • Bio: Paul Copan (Ph.D., Philosophy, Marquette University) is a Christian theologian, analytic philosopher, apologist, and author. He is currently a professor at the Palm Beach Atlantic University (Florida) and holds the endowed Pledger Family Chair of Philosophy and Ethics. He is author or editor of nearly 50 books, including the very popular, strong-selling book Is God a Moral Monster? as well as its companion volume, the award-winning Is God a Vindictive Bully? He is coeditor of The Routledge Companion to Philosophy of Religion, The Naturalness of Theistic Belief, Philosophy of Religion: Classic and Contemporary Issues, and The Kalām Cosmological Argument (a two-volume anthology). He is coauthor of Creation out of Nothing and Biblical Ethics: Walking in the Way of Wisdom. He has also contributed essays to over 60 books, both scholarly and popular, and he has authored a number of articles in professional journals. In 2017 and 2024, he has been a Visiting Scholar at the University of Oxford (Wycliffe Hall and Oriel College). For six years, he served as president of the Evangelical Philosophical Society.
