The Australian Open starts tomorrow, and today Nick O'Hern and Mark Allen are live from Royal Melbourne. We start with a special guest - Tour Pro Elvis Smylie has dropped him and Nick, has just come from a weather briefing and runs through for Elvis what they've just found out about tomorrow's weather. Warm and Windy......the warmth was expected, the wind was not.We ask Elvis how he's planning to play the course, and how the greens are playing in his practise runs. Mark has had a couple of spies watching a number of players and his mail is that the greens are fast...Leishman was struggling to stop the ball, but Rory was able to. The fringes have been the subject of much talk, what does Elvis think? And will his play differ from last week at Royal Queensland. After Elvis heads off, former Royal Melbourne Captain and historian of the course Andrew Kirby drops in. Kirbs tells Nick and Mark how the course has been set up, and how it may play given the wind. In some breaking news literally 2 minutes before Kirbs dropped in, Rory has just had a press conference where he was asked what the best course in Melbourne was - we all expected he'd say Royal Melbourne.....he did not. Much to everyone's surprise, and Mark says that Rory is clearly a 'bad judge of golf courses'.Kirbs, with his long history, explains what makes Royal Melbourne so special for him, and what his favourite tournament ever has been here. And after those couple of chats....we're all off to walk the course and soak it all in !We're live from Titleist and FootJoy HQ thanks to our great partners:BMW, luxury and comfort for the 19th hole;Titleist, the #1 ball in golf;FootJoy, the #1 shoe and glove in golf;PING will help you play your best;Golf Clearance Outlet, they beat everyone's prices;Betr, the fastest and easiest betting app in Australia; And watchMynumbers and Southern Golf Club.
A Talk Birdie Mini today, and we have a question from Matthew in Nebraska who asks for Nick and Marks thoughts on what he calls 'a rather uncompetitive year' for Brooks Koepka. Nick has been surprised, saying that he felt the LIVG structure and style would have suited Brooks, however it seems to not have. Mark says that his swing, his putting, everything else is still the same - aside from the scores. Mark says that in his view 'LIV has stuffed Brooks game, and the move has backfired for both Brooks and Cameron Smith'. We discuss the difference between the 3 round and 4 round structure, and Nick and Mark talk about playing 6 rounds at times during their career. Pro Ams come up, and Mark says his view is that Pro's should play very few Pro Ams, he explains why.And we end by discussing if we will see Brooks at his best again? Mark says yes. But only when he returns to the PGA Tour. We're live from Titleist and FootJoy HQ thanks to our great partners:BMW, luxury and comfort for the 19th hole;Titleist, the #1 ball in golf;FootJoy, the #1 shoe and glove in golf;PING will help you play your best;Golf Clearance Outlet, they beat everyone's prices;Betr, the fastest and easiest betting app in Australia; And watchMynumbers and Southern Golf Club. It's a Saturday morning (in Australia for international wolfpackers) and we're live from the Golf Clearance Outlet's brand spanking new store in Mornington, Victoria. The Australian Open is now a fortnight away, and to see how Royal Melbourne is shaping up both Nick O'Hern and Mark Allen played it this week, and compare notes on how it looks and how it plays. Mark said a few months ago that it would need a 'minor miracle' to be ready in time....he gives his verdict on whether that miracle has occurred or not on the pod today.Nick played with Shane Joel, who is Min Woo Lee's caddy, and throughout the day they discussed Min Woo's game, how he might play certain holes, and how far his carry is with his Driver, Mini Driver, and 4 Iron....and Nick and Mark chat about the clubs that Min Woo and Rory McIlroy might use of the tee when they play the Royal Melbourne Composite course in the Open. After the turn, we have a chat with the big boss at Golf Clearance Outlet, Sam Colosimo, and he gives us a snapshot of how the stores are going, what stock is working well, and some of the things you can find instore. Mark rips out to the car to bring in a putter that he bought from Golf Clearance Outlet that he loves, and he shows it off on the pod.A fun Saturday, and good to see the Golf Clearance Outlet team - if you're near a store, check them out in person, if not, everything is online here. Okay....so some context here. Last week Mark Allen's Top 5 was, shall we say, slightly controversial. He listed the Top 5 (which became a Top 20) things that Pro Golfers laugh at Amateurs for doing. Some of the Wolfpack loved it, some didn't....and were not backwards about expressing their view on the list.So today, in the first half of the pod, we read out some of the feedback we received....these whacks are as big a whack as we've ever received so the Top 5 certainly hit a nerve! But we're always prepared to face the music.....and we do.After that, things calm down, and we chat to Darren from Toowoomba who is representing Talk Birdie To Me in the Victoria PGA Pro Am at Moonah Links in December. We find out about his preparation, how he's feeling, and whether he's got a caddy sorted yet. Looking forward to seeing how Darren goes, one thing is for sure, he's going to have a lot of fun! Now, off to recover after the first half of the pod whack-fest......We're live from Titleist and FootJoy HQ thanks to our great partners:BMW, luxury and comfort for the 19th hole;Titleist, the #1 ball in golf;FootJoy, the #1 shoe and glove in golf;PING will help you play your best;Golf Clearance Outlet, they beat everyone's prices;Betr, the fastest and easiest betting app in Australia; And watchMynumbers and Southern Golf Club. In this final episode for Season Seven, co-hosts Mark Allen (https://holisticactivism.net/)and Michael Baylis (https://michaelbayliss.org/)s catch up for a short, freewheeling conversation to wrap up a busy year. In June 2025, Michael and Mark participated in a community consultation weekend on the future development of North Albany. Michael later presented his observations at the Albany Community Environment Centre forum ahead of the City of Albany elections in September. His presentation explained to prospective councillors and fellow environmentalists why urban planning matters for both social wellbeing and ecological resilience. It also invited attendees to reflect upon the long‑term consequences of unchecked growth for the city's future. For this episode, Michael reads out this talk for posterity, which can also be read on the PGAP blog HERE (https://pgap.fireside.fm/articles/northalbany). This prompts an open discussion with Mark around issues such as: Albany's growth pains and the impact this has for future planning, housing security and the natural environment; How face to face community consultation, including Citizen Assemblies, can encourage cooperative debate and discussion, in contrast to the divisiveness which is so common in online or social media debates; How holistic approaches to debate (https://holisticactivism.net/) can ensure that everyone can find common ground and navigate difference of opinion across many critical issues, including overpopulation; The importance of including post-growth thinking into our conversations, to encourage people to think about the bigger picture and act proactively as well as reactively; Finding the time to be in a space outside of language and narrative. An article, written by Michael in 2023, argues why the pursuit of growth makes this all the more difficult. Link HERE (https://www.populationmedia.org/the-latest/population-growth-and-wealth-inequality); Election fatigue in which it seems to be a case of the trees voting for the axe at federal, state and local levels, and: Finally, on a darkly humours note, we imagine what kind of apocalypse we face when world coffee stocks run out. As we draw a close to season seven, we reflect on a very good year for PGAP. This has been our longest season to date, beginning as far back as November 2024, when we broadcasted the radio documentary ‘Rethinking Sustainability (https://pgap.fireside.fm/7rethinksustain)'. Since then, Season Seven has covered many topics across fifteen episodes, such as steady state economics, techno dystopia, regenerative agriculture and a panel discussion on Degrowth at the University of New South Wales. This year, PGAP was recognised by the site MillionPodcasts (https://www.millionpodcasts.com/overpopulation-podcasts/) as being in the top ten global podcasts that covers overpopulation and in the top fifty podcasts on Sustainable Living. This is very encouraging news to hear as we take a break over the festive season and plan for season eight. While we are on our break, we encourage you to share this and other episodes of PGAP with your friends, family and networks. We are grateful to anyone who takes the time to review and rate us on Apple Podcasts (https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/post-growth-australia-podcast/id1522194099)or your favourite podcast platform. We are also appreciative when people take the time to contact us directly (https://pgap.fireside.fm/contact) with feedback and suggestions for future episode topics or guests. Many of our interviews this season came about from community suggestions or from prospective guests who emailed us. Reaching out is so important, not just for building connection but for helping us to broaden our range of episode topics and guests. Last, but certainly not least, we extend our gratitude to Sustainable Population Australia (SPA), which has supported PGAP since its inception in July 2020. This season, we also bid farewell to John Coulter (https://pgap.fireside.fm/johncoulter), a long-time leader of SPA and the wider post-growth movement in Australia who sadly passed away last year. We welcomed SPA's new patron, Anne Poelina (https://pgap.fireside.fm/annepoelinapatron), and spoke with Isaac Kabongo (https://pgap.fireside.fm/isaaceco), the Ugandan CEO of the Ecological Christian Organisation, who has represented SPA at COP events. You can learn more about SPA here. (https://population.org.au/)
The holiday season is a time for joy, connection… and let's be honest, a whole lot of pie. From pecan to pumpkin to the classic apple pie, our plates tend to get fuller as the year winds down. On a recent Late Night Health interview, host Mark Allen sat down with Pamela Nisevich Bede — six-time author, marathoner, and nutrition expert with Abbott's Lingo program — to talk about how to enjoy holiday favorites without derailing your health goals. Pamela explains that while overindulging is common this time of year, you don't have to choose between celebration and wellness. Turkey, for example, is a great source of lean protein, and many holiday dishes can be enjoyed guilt-free with just a little strategy. One of her most surprising tips? What you eat first matters. Starting your meal with vegetables, protein, and healthy fats can help stabilize your glucose before digging into carb-heavy favorites. Mood also plays a big role during holiday gatherings — especially when navigating family dynamics. Pamela notes that mood is closely tied to glucose stability. By keeping blood sugar steady, you're better able to stay focused, energized, and emotionally balanced (even when Uncle Joe pushes your buttons). A new tool making this easier is Lingo by Abbott, an over-the-counter continuous glucose monitor that helps you understand how foods affect your body in real time. No prescription needed. With Lingo, she says, people can “take the guesswork out of wellness” and see what actually works for their unique metabolism. And yes — you can still enjoy dessert. Pamela recommends taking a 10–20 minute walk after that slice of pie. Your muscles will use the incoming glucose for fuel, helping keep your energy up instead of sending you straight to the couch for an after-dinner nap. Bonus pod today with Nick O'Hern and Mark Allen previewing the DP World Tour Championship this weekend in Dubai at the Earth Course. We discuss who is coming in with good form and whilst there are plenty of great players in the event, Nick and Mark believe the combination of Rory's form coming in, and the type of course it is - which Mark says is 'built for Rory' - means he is an excellent chance of winning.Nick says the Earth Course suits long hitters perfectly. So he agrees that Rory looks good, as does Marco Penge as a fellow long hitter in great form. Mark is confident that Elvis Smylie is ready to step up and perform well, particularly with the ramifications for him from this tournament important. So we have built a Betr multi exclusively for Talk Birdie listeners, one which we are quietly confident about - but of course there is never any guarantee, so if you can't afford to lose it, don't bet it. If you want to have a small punt, find our Talk Birdie multi on the Betr app, or website (here) and look under Betr Specials to find us.Rory to win.Penge Top 10 plus tiesSmylie Top 20 plus tiesPaying 31 bucks for Talk Birdie listeners.Good luck, and gamble responsibly! Last week Gary Player was interviewed and asked about the best golfers in history and made the statement that while Tiger and Jack were 1 and 2, there was no doubt that he was #3 of all time. There is an argument for that, but it did generate plenty of discussion, so today a Talk Birdie Mini where Nick O'Hern and Mark Allen discuss if indeed Gary is #3 or, if not, who is and what criteria is used. The boys share some stories about Gary, and do their impersonations of him. Mark talks about meeting Gary at The Vines, and Gary asked him to punch him in the stomach....Nick says Gary also asked him (and almost everyone) to punch him in the stomach - which he did! In aerospace, we talk a lot about "the future of flight." But most of that conversation has been driven by fantasy. Fully electric aircraft that can't fly far enough, and technologies that look good in a render but can't sustain the physics or economics of real aviation. That's why what Electra Aero is building feels like the first practical revolution in modern air mobility. It's not about escaping airports altogether; it's about rethinking what access to the air actually means. A platform that combines the short-range flexibility of a helicopter with the efficiency, speed, and safety of a fixed-wing aircraft. A system that can land in 150 feet, carry nine passengers, and fly 1,000 miles...all at a cost per seat mile that rivals a Cessna Caravan. In other words, not a science experiment, but an aircraft for both the Pentagon and Palm Springs. When you look at the infrastructure, the capital, and the technology now converging, from turbo generators to hybrid propulsion, it's clear the "inflection point" for advanced air mobility is already here. The question isn't if we'll see it, but when the iceberg breaks the surface and everyone suddenly realizes how much has already been built underneath. What makes this design different enough for the Department of Defense to back it, and powerful enough to fly missions no existing aircraft can? In this episode, the CEO of Electra Aero, Mark Allen, joins me to dive into what it takes to turn an experimental prototype into a scalable aircraft production company. We also discuss how hybrid-electric flight could redefine how people and goods move between cities in the next decade. Things You'll Learn In This Episode Why "payload-to-range" is the real metric that will define the winners in advanced air mobility How Electra's hybrid-electric system radically cuts maintenance and lifecycle costs Why vertical takeoff isn't the future, ultra-short takeoff and landing is How runway independence could transform both defense logistics and civilian travel What it takes to fund deep-tech aviation in a VC world built for SaaS Why the next big shift in aerospace will feel like a "ketchup bottle" moment: slow, then all at once How leadership and team "swing" drive complex innovation when the mission is bigger than any one person Guest Bio: Marc Allen is the CEO of Electra Aero. At Electra, Marc is leading the charge in developing hybrid-electric Ultra Short aircraft to define the next level of seamless air travel connectivity. Through direct aviation, Electra is bringing air travel closer to where people live, work, and play - without airports, emissions, or noise. Marc joined Electra after a distinguished career at The Boeing Company, where he held several key leadership roles, including Chief Strategy Officer and Senior Vice President for Strategy and Corporate Development. He led the $5 billion customer finance business before spending nearly a decade on Boeing's Executive Council, where he served as President of Boeing International and oversaw critical enterprise-wide functions. As head of all venture businesses, he led Wisk Aero's restructuring and full acquisition, focusing on the future of autonomous flight and serving as Chairman. Other roles at Boeing included President of the Embraer Partnership, President of Boeing China, and General Counsel of Boeing International. To learn more, go to http://electra.aero/ or connect with Marc on LinkedIn. Host Bio: Craig Picken is an Executive Recruiter, writer, speaker and ICF Trained Executive Coach. He is focused on recruiting senior-level leadership, sales, and operations executives in the aviation and aerospace industry. His clients include premier OEMs, aircraft operators, leasing/financial organizations, and Maintenance/Repair/Overhaul (MRO) providers and since 2008, he has personally concluded more than 400 executive-level searches in a variety of disciplines. Craig is the ONLY industry executive recruiter who has professionally flown airplanes, sold airplanes, and successfully run a P&L in the aviation industry. His professional career started with a passion for airplanes. After eight years' experience as a decorated Naval Flight Officer - with more than 100 combat missions, 2,000 hours of flight time, and 325 aircraft carrier landings - Craig sought challenges in business aviation, where he spent more than 7 years in sales with both Gulfstream Aircraft and Bombardier Business Aircraft. Craig is also a sought-after industry speaker who has presented at Corporate Jet Investor, International Aviation Women's Association, and SOCAL Aviation Association. Big news from LIV Golf today with the announcement of a move to 72 hole tournament in 2026, we read the statement that LIV released. Nick and Mark discuss the implications, why they've done it, and what it may or may not mean. How will it work within the Teams & Individuals structure?. Could a cut be on the cards in LIV tournaments? Why are they doing it? Mark believes it is designed to put pressure on Trevor Immelman who basically oversees the OWGR these days. The PGA are yet to respond, however Nick reads through the PGA's response from a couple of days ago to the LIV Promotions format and what the PGA have said in response.Massive news, and Nick O'Hern and Mark Allen are all over it on Talk Birdie To Me.We're live from Titleist and FootJoy HQ thanks to our great partners:BMW, luxury and comfort for the 19th hole;Titleist, the #1 ball in golf;FootJoy, the #1 shoe and glove in golf;PING will help you play your best;Golf Clearance Outlet, they beat everyone's prices;Betr, the fastest and easiest betting app in Australia; And watchMynumbers and Southern Golf Club. Did you know that in 2024/2025, 3.4 million solar panels were decommissioned? Did you also know that up to 99% of solar panel material is recyclable? In this episode, we welcome Darren Johannesen (https://smartenergy.org.au/our-team/), Executive General Manager of Sustainability at Smart Energy Council (https://smartenergy.org.au/). We discuss the recent success of Smart Energy Council's Solar PV Recycling and Products Stewardship Program (https://smartenergy.org.au/reuse-recycle/) as an example of urban mining and go on to examine how this could be rolled out on a national scale. The Solar PV Recycling and Products Stewardship Program is one working example of how a ‘circular economy model' would work. Darren however cautions that circular economy models are limited in light of the loss in energy and resources that are implicit with recycling. We at PGAP argue that this is all the more reason why a circular based economy must go hand in hand with a post-growth economic system. Finally, Darren shares his personal vision for a possible post-growth future and what it might look like. Co-host Michael Bayliss is joined by Mark Allen for the introduction and outro for this episode, where they reflect on this great initiative from Smart Energy Council. They also discuss the imperative for a planned degrowth transition in a world that is drowning under ever growing piles of aggregate consumer waste. Mark and Michael also discuss some recent developments and current affairs as ‘post-growth' and ‘collapse' enters mainstream discourse. Did you enjoy this episode? fWotD Episode 3105: 2019 Champion of Champions Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Tuesday, 4 November 2025, is 2019 Champion of Champions. The 2019 Champion of Champions (officially the 2019 ManBetX Champion of Champions) was a professional snooker tournament that took place between 4 and 10 November 2019 at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry, England. It was the ninth Champion of Champions event, the first of which was held in 1978. The tournament featured 16 participants who had won events on the World Snooker Tour since the 2018 Champion of Champions. The winner of the Women's World Championship competed in the tournament for the first time. As an invitational event, the tournament carried no world ranking points.Ronnie O'Sullivan was the defending champion, having defeated Kyren Wilson 10–9 in the final of the 2018 event. O'Sullivan lost 5–6 to Neil Robertson in the semi-finals. Robertson defeated reigning world champion Judd Trump 10–9 in the final to win the championship, having required four snookers in the penultimate frame to avoid losing the match. The tournament produced 20 century breaks. The final set a new record for the most centuries in a best-of-19-frames match as Robertson made five centuries and Trump three, for a total of eight. Mark Allen compiled the highest break of the tournament, a 140, in his semi-final loss to Trump. The tournament's total prize fund was £440,000, of which the winner received £150,000.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:14 UTC on Tuesday, 4 November 2025.For the full current version of the article, see 2019 Champion of Champions on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Olivia.
Phil Maffetone is a coach, clinician, author and long-time thinker in the fields of health, performance and brain-body integration. With a background in human biology, chiropractic and complementary medicine, he began private practice in the late 1970s and went on to work with world champions such as Mark Allen among many others. Beyond purely athletic coaching he is also a musician and songwriter, using his interest in rhythm and the arts to explore how music influences brain-function, neuromuscular coordination and recovery. More recently his focus has included general brain health: how metabolic factors, stress, low-intensity aerobic work and musical‐rhythm engagement support neuroplasticity, cognition and whole‐body wellness.
A bonus pod today with Damien de Bohun, Golf Australia's General Manager - Clubs, Facilities, and Places to Play. Nick O'Hern and Mark Allen have two items on the agenda to discuss with Damien today:Firstly, the new Golf Australia handicap system and how the rollout is going. We've had mixed feedback from wolfpackers. Many love it and think the change is excellent, however some are critical of some of the bugs that have emerged, and importantly we've had a number of listeners who have suggested their scores are not being captured correctly - including wolfpacker Tom who wrote to us, so we want to ask Damien about those things and find out the latest. Mark is also keen to know why the change was necessary, what was wrong with keeping it the way it was?Secondly, there have been developments today on the Moore Park saga in Sydney where NSW Premier Chris Minns and Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore appear to be pushing ahead with their plan to cut one of Australia's busiest golf courses in half, moving it from 18 holes to 9 holes. Damien talks about the latest developments and the Golf Australia proposal which he says lays out clearly how they can achieve what the Premier and Lord Mayor are looking for, more parkland, and retain 18-holes at Moore Park. Damien says that given how important Moore Park is, Golf Australia are seeking a meeting with the Premier and Lord Mayor in the coming days and are confident that when the proposal is understood, it should be received favourably. Dr. Phil Maffetone returns to revisit the MAF Method—training by low heart rate (≈180 minus age)—with Don sharing how it saved his a 100-mile race. Phil explains why most endurance performance is aerobic and how building that system (plus cleaning up diet) beats “no-pain-no-gain.” The episode pivots to his new brain-health research: refined carbs and excess body fat can impair the brain, but the good news is the brain is highly resilient and improves quickly when you remove junk sugars and eat healthy fats. Practical takeaways include using a heart-rate monitor to measure progress, prioritizing diet alongside training, and adding brain-boosters like aerobic exercise, novelty/music, meditation, deep breathing, and even cold exposure. Phil shares daily habits (his “fat-burning coffee,” eggs, veggies) and the famous Mark Allen story to show how speed rises at the same heart rate as fitness improves. Throughout, the crew keeps it playful—touching on music, comedy, and even AI—while reinforcing one theme: train smarter, feed your brain, and you'll run better. On Wednesday Nick O'Hern and Mark Allen were at the beautiful Links Golf & Wellbeing at Hope Island for an 18-hole Talk Birdie To Me golf tournament with around 80 Wolfpack members. We loved it! So much fun. A chipping and putting clinic in the morning, lunch, then the tournament, along with dinner and presentations to the winners. And then we did a 30-minute live Q&A with everyone. As you would appreciate not everything discussed at an event where no question was off limits is 'publishable', so this audio isn't the entire Q&A, but we thought we'd give you a listen to some of what we discussed on the night after the tournament on the Gold Coast.Great fun, and a huge thanks to David, Abi and Dylan from Links Golf and Wellbeing for looking after us and the Wolfpack, they could not have been more hospitable ! In this episode of Neuroshambles, Mark Allen is joined by devoted dad and fellow Neuroshambler Mark Holborow, for a refreshingly honest look at the difficulties of holding down a job, while raising neurodivergent kids and trying (often unsuccessfully) to keep those two worlds from colliding. They discuss naked Zoom call interruptions and the emotional labour of school drop-offs, as well as the guilt, the resilience, and the accidental skillsets parents of ND kids develop. It's a cathartic, relatable deep dive into the realities of navigating employment when your home life is anything but typical – with plenty of laughs, rants, and candid talk about autism, ADHD, PDA and neurodivergent parenting. ⸻ CHAPTER TIMESTAMPS (Estimated): 00:00 – Intro & Listener Survey Feedback 05:30 – Meet the Guest: Mark Holborough 10:00 – The Challenges of working parents 16:30 – Working from Home with neurodifferent Kids 25:00 – Background chaos, interruptions and client calls 33:00 – The emotional guilt of being the breadwinner 40:00 – Supporting the non-working Parent 53:00 – How open can you be at work? 1:00:00 – Hiding a child at work: Real life stories 1:07:00 – Why parents of neuro-exceptional kids make great employees 1:13:00 – The economic cost of caring 1:26:00 – The Positives 1:29:00 – Neurodiversity Champions 1:33:00 – Tiny Epic Wins 1:37:00 – What the Flip? This is a great time to build the cake, or maybe even just put your shopping list together. Today, we look at the unlimited potential of aerobic capacity and why it's at the core of making you a better long course athlete. We talk about Mark Allen's quest to beat Dave Scott and how patience allowed him to set the IM run course record. We get into using this time to reduce your stress and level your cortisol to be a healthier person. We look at how your body adapts to training and how we actually get faster and stronger. Get faster in a more meaningful (and functional) way. The goal right now is to train in a way so that you feel good tomorrow . . . and the next day. Be patient and the speed will come. The “Missing in Iowa” series reaches its conclusion, pulling together the tragic stories of Johnny Gosch, Eugene Martin, and Mark James Warren Allen. Listen as LaDonna Humphrey and David McClam examine disturbing patterns, numerous attempted abductions, and the haunting question of whether a serial predator or a pedophile ring shattered the innocence of Iowa in the 1980s.Time Line00:00 Missing in Iowa: Johnny and EugeneThis episode delves into the heartbreaking disappearances of Johnny Gosh (1982) and Eugene Martin (1984), highlighting the striking similarities in their cases. Both were young paperboys for the Des Moines Register, vanished on early Sunday mornings, and left behind abandoned belongings, suggesting a connected pattern of abduction.03:52 Other Attempted AbductionsThe discussion expands to include a series of other attempted abductions of paperboys in the Des Moines area during the 1980s. Incidents involving Jim Pollock, Mike Fackler, and Melissa Gale, among others, suggest a pattern of targeting young carriers, often by men in white vehicles.07:18 Serial Predator or Pedophile Ring? The hosts explore whether these incidents point to a single serial predator or a broader pedophile ring, considering the possibility of more than one offender. They also discuss the connection of Mark Allen's disappearance to these cases and emphasize the lasting impact on the community and families, urging listeners to come forward with any information.Featured Quotes:“We're here to dig up the truth, case by case, victim by victim.” — David McClam“Because they mattered. They still matter. And someone, somewhere knows what happened.” — Ladonna Humphrey“If the Indianola incidents were unrelated, that would mean there wasn't one predator in Iowa during the 1980s. There were two.” — David McClamBehind the Story:This episode brings to light the interconnected nature of several missing persons and attempted abduction cases in Iowa during the 1980s. The hosts detail how Johnny Gosch and Eugene Martin's disappearances share compelling similarities. They also highlight a pattern of other paper carriers being targeted, often by men in white vehicles. The discussion probes the grim possibilities of a single offender, multiple predators, or even an organized ring, painting a picture of a community forever changed by these events.
The clock is ticking as we face an imminent agricultural crisis. It is likely that we only have around sixty global harvests left until the world's top soils are depleted. Regenerative agriculture offers many potential and practical solutions toward a more sustainable relationship between food production and environmental stewardship. However, sustainable farming is a broad church with many different and sometimes contradictory methodologies, from mob cattle grazing to veganic farming practices to precision fermentation. Which ones do we choose? Louis De Jaeger, author of “SOS: Save Our Soils”, asked this question as he travelled the world to explore the whole gamut of regenerative farms and land management practices. Louis' holistic, non-judgemental and open-minded approach is very refreshing. As far as we're aware, he is the only person who has managed to endorse veganic farming while also enjoying an enthusiastic introduction to his book by Allan Savory, figurehead of the holistic grazing movement. Louis concludes that all regenerative farming methods have their place, depending on context, so long as the soil is kept healthy with its precious microbiome intact. Louis de Jaeger is a Belgian based eco-entrepreneur, landscape consultant, speaker and author. You can find out more at his WEBSITE (https://louisdj.com/en/). “SOS: Save Our Soils”, launched in June 2025, is an impressive blend of research told through a conversational, easy-to-read style which makes it an essential addition to the growing wealth of regenerative literature. To purchase your own copy of SOS, visit HERE. (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FF3R1NKK) Industrial agriculture is a top global driver of environmental change. A post-growth future requires us to completely reimagine how we approach agriculture, not only with regard to methodology, but also to the size and scale of our food growing enterprises. Following the interview with Louis, co-hosts Mark Allen and Michael Bayliss engage in a ‘panel discussion' where Louis' book and interview are discussed (along with the broader regenerative movement) from a post-growth perspective. We encourage you to stick around to the end of the interview. Many thanks to West Australian permaculture band ‘Formidable Vegetable' for the inclusion of their song ‘Earthworm Bill.' You can find out more about Formidable Vegetable at their Bandcamp page HERE (https://formidablevegetable.bandcamp.com/album/micro-biome). Michael recently made a short video on a Johnson Su method composting workshop which also includes this song. It may be watched HERE (https://www.facebook.com/share/v/19YEcXSJAP/). Well it's here, the week before one of the great golf weekends - the Ryder Cup. But before we get to our preview, a reminder about our Talk Birdie To Me Golf Day at Links Golf and Wellbeing at Hope Island on the Gold Coast, it's now two weeks away (Wednesday October 8th), Nick O'Hern and Mark Allen will be playing the tournament along with 80 or 90 wolfpackers. A few tickets left here. The prizes are brilliant:FootJoy vouchers;Titleist GT Driver and 3 wood with a custom fitting with a Titleist Fitting Specialist;A set of custom fitted Vokey Wedges fitted by a Titleist Fitting Specialist;A couple of dozen Pro V1 golf balls;Golf Clearance Outlet vouchersLuxury Escapes vouchersAnd the hole in one prize from Luxury Escapes: a week at the Pullman Maldives with return flights for two if you if you don't mind! Conditions apply, but there is only 3 conditions - pros ineligible (Nick and Mark you're out), only one prize - so if two aces are hit we do a random draw, and it applies on the 17th hole, which is a gettable Par 3.Fun!Now onto the pod. Nick and Mark are previewing the Ryder Cup, and Mark's first recommendation is to download the Ryder Cup app, it's brilliant. Nick talks about his memories of playing in Europe and feeling almost a part of it, as all the European pros wanted to be involved. Mark has a feeling the crowd, despite the US component being parochial, will lean European as there have been huge amounts of tickets sold to Europeans apparently. We discuss the pay controversy and the difference in approach between the Europeans and the US teams, Mark believes this is bad karma for the US and it will 'bite them'.As usual for a big event, we're putting a Talk Birdie multi on and working in our favour is that Hummer from Betr doesn't know a lot about the Ryder Cup, so we shot through our very gettable multi without any context for him and, in a moment of weakness, he whacked it up.Multi is:Scheffler to not have a winning record for the tournament, into;Europe to lead going into day 3, into;Europe to win.7 bucks. Get on board here under Betr specials and if you're not a member, it's a 60-second sign up process. We are confident, but of course there is no guarantee - so if you can't afford to lose it, don't bet it.We wrap up our Ryder Cup preview pod with some comments from Nick on how they are setting up Bethpage and why, and Nick outlines what he believes the US always get wrong in the Ryder Cup.It's going to be a ripper, we can't wait !!!We're live from Titleist and FootJoy HQ thanks to our great partners:BMW, luxury and comfort for the 19th hole;Titleist, the #1 ball in golf;FootJoy, the #1 shoe and glove in golf;PING will help you play your best;Golf Clearance Outlet, they beat everyone's prices;Betr, the fastest and easiest betting app in Australia; And watchMynumbers and Southern Golf Club. The summer of '84 held a dark secret as another young paperboy vanished in Iowa, echoing the nightmare of Johnny Gosh's disappearance and igniting a firestorm of fear and suspicion.
A couple of weeks ago Nick O'Hern and Mark Allen listed golfers they disliked playing with, and wolfpacker John was surprised Greg Norman didn't get a mention, in fact Nick said he enjoyed playing with Greg. Johns rationale was, in part, Sharks treatment of Lucas Parsons as a young pro in the early days. So, there's only one thing for it, let's get Lucas on to explain what happened. We start with some background, how Lucas' career started back in Orange, some of the greats he played with, and some of his greatest achievements....which were significant, he was an excellent player. Nick remembers watching Lucas and being amazed by how powerful his swing was, Mark's the same, but also remembers nights out after tournaments with Lucas having a shandy or three. We hear what the two highlights of Lucas' career were, from his perspective, and he talks about what he admired about how Nick went about his career. And all of that is great. But it's an entree to the main course. And today, for mains, we are serving up Lucas' memories of playing with Greg Norman. And boy oh boy...Lucas doesn't hold back. He tells us why 'playing with Greg was not a pleasant experience', why Wayne 'Radar' Riley got Greg in a bad mood one day which he took out on Lucas, the role Jack Nicklaus played in Greg treating Lucas the way that he did, and the day Rodger Davis gave Greg a talking to over his behaviour on course and got told by Shark where to go.Strap in, this pod gets juicy. In a broadcasting first, the BBC has followed a team from His Majesty's Inspectorate of Prisons as it investigates conditions in a prison near Rugby in Warwickshire. The result is a unique insight into the problems faced by the prison system. This portrait of a prison on trial reveals how under-resourced prison staff are failing to stop copious amounts of drugs being brought in, and are struggling to provide a safe and productive environment in which prisoners can be prepared for release back into society. His Majesty's Prison Onley is a category C, medium security prison, housing 740 inmates. Its governor, Mark Allen, says Onley is among the top ten prisons for incursion of drugs via drones and admits many of his staff are too inexperienced to handle the inmates, resulting in frustration among prisoners, and violence. In its last inspection three years ago, Onley was found to be struggling in various areas, and it doesn't take the inspection team long to find out that things are, if anything, getting worse. Inspectors meet prisoners who complain about everything from lack of laundry facilities to failure to provide meaningful work opportunities, or help with their offender behaviour. One inspector has to intervene when she finds a prisoner ‘spiced up' and in need of immediate help. Another prisoner is refusing to leave the relative safety of the segregation wing, because he's being threatened with violence over his debts to drug dealers within the prison. Inspectors discover evidence that officers are too ready to resort to force to deal with difficult prisoners and failing to keep accurate records of their restraining methods.Prison officers talk about the challenges of trying to deal with violence within the prison and of trying to prevent drugs coming in.In a lighter moment, lead inspector Angus Jones visits the prison library and discovers a surprising inclusion among books the prisoners are not allowed to read. The inspection ends with the team meeting to agree how to score Onley against their key criteria for a ‘healthy prison' and then presenting their conclusions to the Governor. Last week Tiger Woods was asked to name the four players he'd have on the Mount Rushmore of Golf, and he gave his four names. Today we do a new sort of Talk Birdie To Me, which we're calling a 'Talk Birdie Mini', which is an ep which runs around 10-minutes or so, not more.Nick O'Hern and Mark Allen discuss Tiger's names, and then give their own personal Mount Rushmore names - themed as players who influenced their golf the most. And then we name the Talk Birdie To Me Mount Rushmore four.During the pod we hear a great story about Lee Trevino from Nick. While we're talking about players who influenced us, we decide to have a comp for the wolfpackers - we need two names from you. Firstly, the Tour Pro who influenced you, or you love(d) the most, and secondly, the person at your local club, or from when you were a kid, who influenced you the most - not a famous person, but a kind of local hero.
