Welcome back to A Podcask of Amontillado, where we delve into the dark, dreadful, and terrifying parts of the world. The Creepy House. The Creepy Doll. The Creepy Guy Outside the Camp. All clichés, or in modern parlance, all tropes! Sometimes they're a useful tool, other times they're a shortcut that betrays a lack of imagination. But is that the fault of the trope, or the writer? In either case, what is it about them that we either despise, or love, about these tried and tested story devices? Listen in as Erin and Gary break Zack Parris from the Back Row Super Show out from behind the wall to discuss if they're accurate or why they're not, why writers keep using them, the Black Hole of the Internet's massive List of Horrror Tropes, trope vs genre, Who Dies First, crime thriller vs horror (again), jump scares, Horror Tropes: The Movie!, gratuitous tits, getting the hell out of the house, pleading for movies to stop over-explaining, how they gotta show the love, and how we love to sound smart. Joe and Adam discuss the greatest non-18+ Halloween movie of all time, Ernest Scared Stupid (1991). The fourth Ernest film to reach the box office, this cult classic and modest hit features Ernest (Jim Varney) and his dog, Rimshot, teaming up with some children to put the proverbial genie back in the bottle, or in this case, the troll back in the tree. For you see, Ernest has unwittingly unleashed Trantor the troll onto a small Missouri town. The troll is laser-focused on turning the children into little wooden dolls. Now, Ernest must engage in strategery with Old Lady Hackmore (Eartha Kitt) to figure out how to undo his grave mistake!

Join us as we dive into the nostalgic world of "Ernest Scared Stupid," a beloved Halloween classic that blends humor and mild horror. The hosts reflect on their childhood memories associated with the film, discussing how it shaped their perceptions of scary movies and the unique charm of Jim Varney's performance as Ernest. While JJ revels in the film's comedic elements and heartfelt nostalgia, Mattson presents a more critical view, questioning its appeal to those without a childhood connection to the franchise. Alec finds himself unexpectedly charmed by the movie, highlighting the impressive practical effects and the standout performance of Rimshot, the dog. Together, they explore the film's quirks, its place in Halloween traditions, and the lasting impact of childhood favorites on adult perspectives.Support us:https://www.patreon.com/whatsourverdictEmail us: hosts@whatsourverdict.comFollow us:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/whatsourverdictTwitter: @whatsourverdictInstagram: @whatsourverdictYouTube: https://youtube.com/channel/UC-K_E-ofs3b85BnoU4R6liAVisit us:www.whatsourverdict.com

In what could be considered the Ernest Scared Stupid variant of the Franken-multiverse, Adam and Joe revisit Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell (1974). In this "classic" tale, Peter Cushing's Frankenstein doesn't actually create anything, but he sure does have fun running an asylum with zany characters! Come join us as we enjoy the final appearance of Peter Cushing as Baron Frankenstein!
Obviously, many of us film fans see movies in theaters througout the year, whether it be at a national chain or at an independent, arthouse theater - or both. Some of us are even hitting film festivals, special screenings, and for the truly unhinged cinephiles, film marathons. For these kind of events to happen though, there have to be some mad geniuses behind the scenes. Those people are film programmers, and they do so much for our the culture of our fandom; from tracking down film the best quality prints available, to figuring out who owns the rights, to actually making the screenings happen. A lot of times their success comes down to the sheer passion they have for these offbeat, awkward, or just downright strange and fucked up motion pictures that makes them want to pass that along to new viewers. In other words, helping new fans Discover the Horror! One of those mad geniuses is Will Morris, who is one of the programmers for the world-famous Music Box Theatre in Chicago. Will has been programming The Music Box of Horrors a 24-hour horror marathon for close to a decade now, as well as programming their yearly January Giallo festival, and much, much more. We invited Will to come on the show to not only explain a little of what he does, but why. Get ready for a fun and wild ride. This week Nate insisted we cover The Crow for Halloween even though Ernest Scared Stupid also takes place on All Hallows Eve and is way more of a horror movie. But good news, Troy also dropped in for this big screen adaptation of the classic action/revenge comic book. Strap in folks. This one's a ride for sure. "It can't rain all the time...."

Ernest Scared Stupid is without a doubt easy to love on every level. Is it dumb? Yes. Is it childish? Of course. Are there plot holes? Sure. But even with all it's "faults" it's quite possibly the perfect gateway movie to get young cinephiles into the horror genre. Jim Varney as Ernest P. Worrell is a delightful living Loony Tune character, the world lost one of the good ones too soon and we miss him dearly. Do yourself a favor and start making this film a family holiday tradition.
