On December 5, 2013, Ronnie Smith was shot and killed in the Libyan city of Benghazi. In this second half of our interview with Anita Smith, Ronnie's widow, she talks about the legacy her husband left and the faith she continues to exercise in raising their son without his earthly father around. Shortly after Ronnie's death, Anita spoke in media interviews about her love for the Libyan people and about forgiving her husband's murderers—including interviews in Arabic with Middle East broadcasters. Anita will share some of the things she wants their son to know about his earthly father, and ways God has encouraged and sustained her in the eight years since Ronnie's murder. She'll also talk about how the testimonies of other Christians facing persecution and hardship encouraged her faith. If you missed the first half of the conversation with Anita, listen here. Find the Show Notes here.   Which do you struggle with most: starting on a dream or staying faithful through the messy middle? My guest this week is Rachel Baker an author, a pastor's wife and director of women's ministries in her local church. Along her journey she has questioned her lack of training, doubted her calling, and has been tempted to give up before reaching the finish line. Like many of us, she also went through a season of not knowing where to begin. In a beautiful turn of events (and through a conversation with her husband), she realized that the starting line was just outside her own door. In this conversation we also talk about: God's rebuke when Rachel doubts her calling, What to do if you're prone to great ideas but you face discouragement in the messy middle, and What it looks like to fight for your identity in Christ. “I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me. 31 If I alone bear witness about myself, my testimony is not true. 32 There is another who bears witness about me, and I know that the testimony that he bears about me is true. 33 You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. 34 Not that the testimony that I receive is from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. 35 He was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light. 36 But the testimony that I have is greater than that of John. For the works that the Father has given me to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, bear witness about me that the Father has sent me. 37 And the Father who sent me has himself borne witness about me. His voice you have never heard, his form you have never seen, 38 and you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe the one whom he has sent. 39 You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, 40 yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life. 41 I do not receive glory from people. 42 But I know that you do not have the love of God within you. 43 I have come in my Father's name, and you do not receive me. If another comes in his own name, you will receive him. 44 How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God? 45Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you: Moses, on whom you have set your hope. 46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me. 47 But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?”1.     Do we find ourselves avoiding discussions with non-Christians about God or questions about God?  Why?2.     Is it relieving to you that only God can prove God?3.     Do you realize that trusting Jesus is real evidence of the Holy Spirit at work in your life?4.    What are you trying to prove about yourself, and to whom?5.     In what ways does the world's glory seem more appealing to you than God's?6.    What are we seeking when we open the Bible?  What are we after in our spiritual disciplines?7.    Does vindication in Jesus provide real hope for you?  Why or why not?

Blair hosted the Maxwell Institute Podcast for eight years and has served many years as a Sunday School President and Sunday School instructor. He loves reading, family time, weekend napping, the Utah Jazz, and living in Salt Lake City. Highlights 9:00 Blair talks about being a liberal in a very conservative church. 12:00 How can leaders help everyone feel welcome despite having different views? 14:40 Leaders need to address tattletale culture. Instead of going to the bishop to complain, go directly to the person you have a problem with. 19:00 What is doctrine? 24:30 We all mingle the doctrine of men with scripture. We all see doctrine a little differently. We don't have to be so rigid in our views but be open to new ways of thinking. 26:15 It's a strength to hold space for uncertainty and let go of the need to be certain about everything. 31:15 Discussion of apologetics 46:30 The most important thing that a leader can do is provide a welcoming space for everyone. Give people space to disagree or to have questions. What matters is finding common ground. A leader can change the whole dynamic of their ward. 50:25 People become disaffected from the church. Meaning that many people come to feel unloved and disconnected. Feelings are the root of it all. 55:40 Our love and relationship with others shouldn't be contingent on whether they stay in the church or not. 56:30 What does it look like to love someone without trying to change them? 56:45 Blair encourages leaders to get familiar with other resources and entities to help them get familiar with different situations. Examples: read a book from the Maxwell Institute, listen to podcasts, presentation from a FAIR Conference, BYU studies, read a couple of Dialogue articles, etc. 58:45 Even general authorities have different views on things. We don't always have to agree. Some choose to defend their faith aggressively and others passively. The key is to be charitably peaceful. Have you ever been asked a question that you weren't ready for? Maybe it was one of your employees asking your opinion on some current event. Or maybe it was a kid in the Sunday School class you teach—or even your own kid—asking you something about God, or the Bible, or how we really know something we believe is true… and it caught you off-guard? In this video you will hear biblical answers to: • What Bible passage has had the greatest impact on my life? • Who is the most "based" person in the Old Testament? • Are Catholics and Mormons real Christians? • What does the Bible say about "the gays?" • How do you explain things in science that contradict God's truth? • How does science prove creationism? • Why is the Bible so against hate, when hate is "based" and usually justified? • How can God justify nine abused kids dying in a fire? I've been there too. We all have. But the founding belief of the Think Institute is that no believer should ever get caught flat-footed when asked about what, or why, we believe. That's why I do AMAs on Discord. AMA stands for "Ask Me Anything," and Discord is a web app for hosting chat and voice discussions. Twice a month, I hop on Discord, and Elipsis, one of the owners of the Politics server, and a Christian, hosts a voice chat room, where anyone can ask me any question about the biblical perspective on life, right and wrong, truth, science, God, Jesus, church, philosophy… you get the idea. I do these AMAs not because I have all the answers, but in order to sharpen my skills in "being ready to answer anyone," as 1 Peter 3:15 says, and to clear away obstacles to faith that my discussion partners may have, as well as to help you, the ThinkSquad, be more ready for the next time you are faced with an unexpected question about what you believe. And you know it's coming. Oh, and you may find that some of your own questions are answered as well. I hope you enjoy, and are edified by this AMA. This podcast is a recording of a talk I gave at this year's Revoice conference in Plano, TX. In it, I talk about why LGBTQ people are not just needy but needed in the church. Specifically, there are four major things I've learned about Jesus and the Christian way of life from my LGBTQ friends: 1) friendship, 2) marriage, 3) faithfulness, and 4) masculinity.Interested in designing the conference T-shirt for the Theology in the Raw “Exiles in Babylon Conference?” Submit your design to chris@theologyintheraw.com The top 3 designs will get free access to the conference (in person or virtual) and the #1 selected design will get free access to the conference and the afterparty and dinner at my house. Designs must be submitted to Chris by November 26th. Feel free to use various slogans like “Exiles in Babylon,” “Exiled,” “Theology in the Raw,” “Raw Theology,” or other one-liners like “Allegiance to a kingdom not a political party,” “Jesus is political not partisan” or whatever. Or use no wording at all. Theology in the Raw Conference - Exiles in Babylon At the Theology in the Raw conference, we will be challenged to think like exiles about race, sexuality, gender, critical race theory, hell, transgender identities, climate change, creation care, American politics, and what it means to love your democratic or republican neighbor as yourself. Different views will be presented. No question is off limits. No political party will be praised. Everyone will be challenged to think. And Jesus will be upheld as supreme.Support PrestonSupport Preston by going to patreon.comVenmo: @Preston-Sprinkle-1Connect with PrestonTwitter | @PrestonSprinkleInstagram | @preston.sprinkleYoutube | Preston SprinkleCheck out Dr. Sprinkle's website prestonsprinkle.comStay Up to Date with the PodcastTwitter | @RawTheologyInstagram | @TheologyintheRawIf you enjoy the podcast, be sure to leave a review.

Matt Swaim and Ken Hensley continue their series looking into ways to reframe conversations about faith with people who doubt or deny the existence of God. Does consciousness exist, or is it merely an illusion? If scientific materialism is true, then how do we account for not just conscience, but consciousness? Is the idea that we are aware of our own sense of self something that scientific materialism can account for, or is it a question that goes beyond the realm of what the natural sciences are competent to pronounce upon? Matt Swaim and Ken Hensley unpack these questions in their ongoing discussion about how to reframe conversations about God when talking to atheists. Colossians 2:6-7 As the grace of God touches our heart, we respond by faith. We walk in Him by that same faith. * Why do the Bereans say there are 2 gospels? Would you consider them a cult? * Prudence asks about paranormal activity and mentions "absent from the body and present with the Lord". * Mark wants to know about the proper doctrine of salvation. * How do I say to my pastor that raffles are not OK?

Before you can obey Christ or encourage others to follow him, you must know what he is asking you to do. The only place to find that is in Scripture. Sure you can read Christian books, participate in Bible studies, listen to sermons, but what if you could grasp this relationship with Jesus Christ on a deeper level and understand the Bible in a way that speaks directly to you!Simone Lake is the founder of Deep Roots in Christ Ministry, a pastor's wife, and has taught seminary level curriculum. Believe me when I say, Simone knows her Bible and wants to see every woman do the same! In this episode, Simone and I chat about studying God's word, defending your faith, and what obedience to Christ really looks like. She is even going to help break down some big Churchy words like Apologetics and hermeneutics for us and give us some practical tips on engaging Gods word in our every day lives.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/journeyofruth)

Ever wondered if people actually experienced a true miracle?  A miracle isn't just some feeling or coincidence, but something that just can't be dismissed with a naturalistic explanation. We challenged our guests to describe their own experience with miracles...and we did it LIVE and in public at North Carolina's largest flea market, with Monica Perez-Burnett and Isaac Leeward. Monica Perez-Burnett is a wife, mom of 8 (including 2 sets of twins), and a business coach with 29 years of experience in various industries. She is the Founder of Faith Led Business, Mon Ministries, and is Chief Global Ministries Officer for Sanctuary Girl. She helps entrepreneurs complete their God-given assignment in business by teaching them how to go from Invisible to Influential for Him. She brings believers to healing and deliverance through her ministry, and motivates women to walk out their faith through inspiring products at Sanctuary Girl. Monica has lived in North Carolina for 5 years, but was born and raised in the California Bay Area. She is bilingual in Spanish and loves all things tech, spending time with her husband, kids, clients, and in the closet. Monica believes we are in a time where God is calling His people back to Him and she wanted to join us on Miracles & Atheists to share His love for His children through healing. Isaac Leeward was a stillborn baby, but through divine intervention he was brought back to life. Later in life, he was taken to heaven and was captivated by its wonder. Isaac has been supernaturally saved from death eight times!  He studied theology at Christ For The Nations Institute in Dallas, TX and also did some graduate studies at Regent University School of Divinity in Virginia Beach VA. Theology, or more simply, the study of God, can seem like a daunting task for us, something only scholarly professionals or seminary students bother thinking about. There are many sub-disciplines of theology, such as historical theology, biblical theology, and philosophical theology. What do they all mean? Why are they separate? Is one more important than the other? And how might a layperson begin to better understand theology for their own witness and faith in Christ? We are all theologians, from non-believers to pastors and laypersons alike. And our theology will impact how we live our lives. On part two of our conversation with theologian Dr. Rhyne Putman, we explore more of the practical applications that emanate from a proper understanding of Christian theology. Rhyne's new book The Method of Christian Theology - A Basic Introduction is written for both the lay and academic theologian. It is an immensely helpful and practical look at how we can understand and apply basic theological principles to our own walk with Christ. Rhyne shares his passion for translating Christian theology and doctrine into disciple making for the glory of God in Christ and His kingdom. Dr. Rhyne R. Putman is associate vice president for academic affairs and director of worldview formation at Williams Baptist University, as well as associate professor of theology and culture at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Aaron Miller leads VOM's work in the Middle East. Recently he spoke in a college chapel, including telling the story of an experience of persecution he endured in India. Aaron says even though the Bible promises Christians will face persecution, in that moment of suffering as he was punched and kicked he was surprised. But something else happened as well: he experienced God's presence and grace in a significant and sacred way. “In a way that I never dreamed of, I had a fellowship with Christ that I did not have before,” he says of that day. Aaron also shares stories of persecuted Christians in Colombia, Bangladesh and the Middle East. Aaron Miller has previously appeared on VOM Radio; you can hear some of those conversations here, here and here.
