Local Selection 200: Sleepless Beauty

We present a landmark Local Selection Mix as we reach the 200 mark with a juggernaut of a mix from Dublin based selector Sleepless Beauty. The eclectic selector runs through a flurry of whirling techno grooves, leaning on wonky Chicago flavours right through to tough IDM inspired tools, she leaves no qualms in her appetite for rabbit-hole styled techno selecting. A chameleon styled DJ with a wide-ranging music taste, ranging from disco to techno & house beats, she is influenced by the warehouse sounds of Berlin and draws inspiration from artists such as Tiga, LSDXOXO, Green Velvet, Soulwax & Boys Noize. Sleepless Beauty has made her mark on Dublin's dance music spaces including Centre Point, Lost Lane, Soundhouse, Pygmalion, Opium, Tramline, Bowlane Social Club & Workman's Club. The rising DJ has also held her own on various radio shows and podcasts for Dublin Digital Radio & hosted a monthly music show on Phever, while also guesting for Gash Collective, Houseflow, TRP, Hot House Label and Nialler9. She has showcased her prowess on the festival circuit playing at Body and Soul, KnockanStockan & All Together Now alongside a standout closing set The Pagoda Stage at Electric Picnic festival. Her latest venture comes under the name Fluid, Ireland's first ever dedicated Club Night for Bisexual, Pansexual, the Fluid and Flexible. This marks a new era for both Irish clubbing and Sleepless Beauty as she leaves her stamp on Irish club culture with a forward thinking approach to inclusivity. Sleepless Beauty's contribution to the Local Selection Mix see's her glue together divergent sounds into a hefty cocktail of psychedelic infused club rollers. The young DJ submerges herself into indifferent sounds, calling on crooked rhythms and off-kilter melodies while marrying them with barefaced four to the floor power, somehow condensing this raw collection of soundscapes into the umbrella term of techno. Unparalleled originality that is both refreshing and bold. I sit down with Sarah at the Tara Building to chat about her experience with Acting, Writing, Theatre and Spoken Word. We then move into chatting about feminism, consent, sexual experiences and empowering female conversations surrounding that.   Sun Bear, Sarah's one-person-show will be on in Smock Alley as part of the Scene & Heard Festival on the 18th and 19th of February. Tickets are available here: https://smockalley.ticketsolve.com/shows/873612032   Sarah Richardson is a spoken word poet from London, currently living in Dublin. She came to Dublin in September 2016 to study at The Gaiety School of Acting. Having never performed at any open mic’s or shared her work before, she started performing her poetry at the Circle Sessions in May 2017 and Ireland has really been the catalyst for her work. Since then she has performed across Ireland as a featured artist at many events, tours and festivals such as KnockanStockan, All Together Now Festival, EP and many more. She has also won a number of slam poetry competitions including Dublin’s Slam Sunday, The Inter-Varisty Slam 2018, The Leinster Heat of the All Ireland Slam and came 2nd in the All Ireland Final. Sarah’s work also expands into theatre, with her first show GirlPlay, which combined spoken word and theatre, premiering at Dublin Fringe Festival 2019. GirlPlay is now heading for a tour in 2020 including runs in Dublin, Galway and London. Sarah is currently working on her second show, a one-woman piece that has been programmed in this years Scene and Heard festival. As well as writing spoken word and theatre, Sarah is the resident sex columnist at Hot Press.    With Being Earnest, I hope to create a space away from the noise of everyday life and distraction. I hope to offer a place, to listen, to share, to be engaged and hopefully inspired. Each week I'll be joined by sound people doing great things to have honest and genuine chats. I hope you enjoy Being Earnest. Thanks for Listening. THUMPER are a noise-pop sextet from Dublin, delivering bubblegum psych through a wall of sonic death. With a reputation for raucous and frenzied live shows, and penchant for howling feedback and pounding rhythm, each show is an exercise in unpredictability. THUMPER have just released their first studio record 'Out of Body Auto-Message' (produced by Dan Fox of Girl Band) before playing their biggest Dublin show yet at Lost Lane, and then head out on a 3 month festival tour including huge slots at Primavera, Body & Soul, Knockanstockan and more.  I had a chat with Oisin and Alan before they headed off to play at Sea Sessions and Body and Soul in one weekend “Their noise-pop sounds like it could fuel jet engines”  Paste Magazine

Hello everyone! Welcome to Episode 6 of DaveBox! After a short break I'm delighted to say that I am back in action. This week I'm highlighting the incredible talent within Search Party Animal, a 5 piece band from Dublin. I was supposed to interview these guys back in June but unfortunately for all of us there was that pesky little thing called the Leaving Cert that got in the way. However I managed to catch up with these guys shortly before they blew everyone away with their killer set over at Knockanstockan. For anyone who hasn't seen these guys perform live its something you need to add to your bucket list they're an absolute tour-de-force and will blow you away. Listen in to hear us catch up about expectations of the future for themselves, reliving moments from their tour in Canada as well as how they managed to balance writing music and gigging throughout their school life and of course two tracks in Heads High Feet Firm and To an End. These guys have been performing with each other since they were 12 years old and have evolved so quickly and maturely. Definitely ones to watch out for. As always, likes shares and retweets are encouraged and welcome. You're all so sound. Dave
