Send us a textWhat happens when two people with extensive recovery journeys sit down to talk about what they're still struggling with? Magic, vulnerability, and profound wisdom emerge.Dr. Samantha Harte welcomes Dave Meltzer – successful entrepreneur, sought-after keynote speaker, author, and as she describes him, "an amazing human" – for a raw conversation that quickly moves beyond the expected topics into deeply personal territory. Despite 16 years of sobriety and all the external markers of success, both open up about their ongoing internal work with disarming honesty. The discussion moves seamlessly between profound topics: the dangers of unhealthy codependency in recovery, the armor we build around our hearts even in loving relationships, and the poisonous nature of guilt and shame. Hart vulnerably shares her current work on disentangling from unhealthy patterns stemming from "mother hunger" while navigating a 22-year marriage rich with both love and betrayal. Meltzer offers his perspective on responding to our natural protective reactions rather than being controlled by them.Perhaps most moving is Harte's revelation about her evolving grief journey after losing her sister to a drug overdose three years ago. She describes how she's finally reaching a place where she can look for spiritual connection with her sister – something unimaginable to her even six months earlier. This leads to a fascinating exploration of spirituality, with Meltzer sharing his concept of "best option faith" and Harte contemplating the relationship between intuition, highest self, and God.Whether you're in recovery or simply interested in personal growth, this conversation demonstrates that healing is never "done" – it's a continuous unfolding that reveals new layers of awareness, connection, and meaning throughout our lives. Join these two authentic souls as they model what it means to keep showing up for your own growth while helping others with theirs.Support the show#thetruthaboutaddiction#sobriety#the12steps#recovery#therapy#mentalhealth#podcasts#emotionalsobriety#soberliving#sobermindset#spirituality#spiritualgrowth#aa#soberlife#mindfulness#wellness#wellnessjourney#personalgrowth#personaldevelopment#sobermovement#recoveroutloud#sobercurious#sobermoms#soberwomen#author#soberauthor#purpose#passion#perspective

Jim Harte is one of the people really fighting to grow soccer in America and he's spent most of his life working with kids, working in the trenches of helping them learn to love the game. He's a six-time high school soccer state champion in Florida as a coach, and was simultaneously an elementary physical education teacher and club soccer coach for decades in the Tampa area. He's also the founder of the high school champions league, and he's the perfect bridge between Tom Byer and the third episode of this little series, which is going to be focused on practical tips for rec soccer coaches. (That third part is already available to paying subscribers on the Patron feed.)In a couple weeks we (Belz and at least a couple of the grassroots episodes guests) are going to record a 4th episode where we respond to questions and comments. Eternally Amy - A Sober Mom of Eight's Journey from Jail to Joy
Tony Harte's story is not your typical recovery tale—it's a blend of grit, logic, and soulful searching. In this illuminating and refreshingly honest conversation, Amy welcomes Tony, a 35-year sober "spiritual gangster" whose path led him from a hospital bed at 21 to a deeply meaningful life rooted in Stoic philosophy. With warmth and wit, they explore what happens when traditional definitions of God no longer fit, and how philosophy—not dogma—can anchor a sober life.If you've ever wrestled with the spiritual side of recovery or questioned whether the 12 steps are enough, Tony's thoughtful, no-BS approach to emotional sobriety and spiritual curiosity will feel like a breath of fresh air. It's not about having all the answers—it's about staying curious and building a blueprint for peace.5 Insightful TakeawaysStoicism isn't emotional suppression—it's emotional training. Tony debunks common myths and shows how ancient virtues like wisdom, courage, justice, and temperance align with modern recovery tools. You don't need a traditional God to find spiritual grounding. Tony shares how he found freedom in letting go of rigid beliefs and embracing a personal spiritual path.Life—and sobriety—don't require perfection, just presence. Through daily practices like the power of pause, Tony models how to respond mindfully, not react impulsively.AA provides the blueprint—Stoicism adds depth. For Tony, the 12 Steps are the foundation, but Stoicism adds another layer of peace, logic, and actionable insight. Not all who wander are lost. This episode is a masterclass in permission to seek, evolve, and explore spiritual life without judgment or pressure.Timestamps[00:02:00] Tony's recovery origin story—from hospital bed to treatment at 21[00:10:00] Finding a spiritual path beyond religion—and the method to his seeking[00:16:00] Why Stoicism clicked: A logical, action-based life philosophy[00:23:00] The four Stoic virtues and how they apply to emotional sobriety[00:37:00] AA's power—and its limits—for long-term peace[01:00:00] Faith, logic, and the two-vine approach to higher powerNotable Resources & Guest LinksTony Harte's Blog: astoicsobriety.comInstagram: @a_stoic_sobrietyIf this episode stirred something in your soul or sparked your own questions about faith and sobriety, we'd love for you to share it with someone on a similar path. Send us a textWhat happens when the very traits that once helped you succeed become the prison bars holding you captive? In this raw and revelatory solo episode, Dr. Samantha Harte takes us on a deeply personal journey through her battle with perfectionism—a character trait that drove her to academic excellence, cocaine addiction, marital crisis, and ultimately, profound transformation.Drawing from her recent Harte Conscious Creators event, Dr. Harte vulnerably shares how her need to control everyone and everything manifested when facing failure or uncertainty. From plagiarizing a college paper to preserve her straight-A identity to overdosing on cocaine the very night she was accepted into a doctoral program, she illustrates how perfectionism created an illusion of control while actually destroying her life. The breakthrough came during her marital crisis, five years sober but spiritually broken. Though physically clean from substances, she was still trying to control outcomes and people, particularly her husband. Working the 12 steps with specific focus on her marriage revealed a powerful truth: she had no power over her husband's feelings, potential infidelity, or their relationship's ultimate outcome—but she did have power over her healing, self-talk, and the meaning she gave her experiences.Dr. Harte's most profound insight came when asked if she'd ever made amends to herself. As a perfectionist, the concept was foreign—everything was her fault because that maintained the illusion she could fix it. Learning to forgive herself became the foundation for later forgiving her husband and rebuilding their marriage. Through losing her father and sister, she faced more tests of surrender, ultimately leading to writing her book modernizing the 12 steps for everyone. The gift Dr. Harte offers listeners is the courage to trust the process of imperfection. As she powerfully states: "Everything good, everything magical that has ever happened to me has happened in the messy middle." Her message transforms the 12 steps into universal tools for living, loving, parenting and working with greater authenticity and peace.Want to break free from your own invisible prison? Listen now and discover how embracing imperfection might be your greatest pathway to freedom. To book a FREE discovery call with Dr. Harte, click the link below:https://calendly.com/drharte/free-discovery-call-w-dr-harteSupport the show#thetruthaboutaddiction#sobriety#the12steps#recovery#therapy#mentalhealth#podcasts#emotionalsobriety#soberliving#sobermindset#spirituality#spiritualgrowth#aa#soberlife#mindfulness#wellness#wellnessjourney#personalgrowth#personaldevelopment#sobermovement#recoveroutloud#sobercurious#sobermoms#soberwomen#author#soberauthor#purpose#passion#perspective

What happens when you confront your darkest moments and choose to heal, instead of staying stuck in the pain?In this raw and inspiring episode of The Big Silence, Karena Dawn is joined by Dr. Samantha Harte, author of Breaking the Circuit. She's a physical therapist, author, and sobriety advocate. Harte opens up about rebuilding her life after addiction and navigating a traumatic childhood. Through it all, she discovered the healing power of vulnerability and forgiveness, ultimately learning to rewire her brain and change her story. Her picture-perfect high school existence masked unbearable pain, leading to a soul-shaking drug overdose. While navigating the challenges of sobriety in the midst of a crumbling marriage and painful loss, Samantha found herself at rock bottom. What came next was a radical reworking of her inner life and the birth of a new identity — one grounded in compassionate curiosity, revolutionary responsibility, and finally, self-forgiveness.This conversation is a masterclass in what it means to confront your truths, rewire your mind, and write a new story — no matter how broken the past may seem. How Do We Take Pain and Turn It Into Something Positive, Even Transformative?Dr. Harte explains why healing begins with self-forgiveness — and how shame, silence, and perfectionism keep us stuck in destructive loops. Their stories offer a masterclass in self-awareness and emotional growth.Joe, paralyzed after a military service injury in 2007, shares how his unwavering positivity and resilience helped him adapt to life in a wheelchair. While these traits enabled him to build a beautiful family with three children, they also created what he calls a "hardened shell" that limited his emotional range. This trait carried her through unimaginable hardships but eventually morphed into a pattern of neglecting her own needs. Through her work as a yoga studio program manager, she's learning to apply the mindfulness practices she teaches to her own healing journey. The conversation takes a powerful turn when discussing parenting, with both guests sharing vulnerable moments where they recognized opportunities for growth. Send us a textWhat happens when anger transforms into acceptance? When betrayal leads to forgiveness? When rage opens the door to healing? This powerful episode brings together three extraordinary individuals who've walked through fire and emerged with wisdom that could change your life.Bruce Cardenas, a former Marine who built a billion-dollar nutrition brand, shares the gut-wrenching story of business betrayal that would have broken many. Instead of seeking vengeance, he chose forgiveness—a choice informed by asking forgiveness from his own brother and watching his son battle alcoholism. His revelation that "life is extremely short" offers a perspective that makes holding grudges seem like precious time wasted.Military veteran Amy takes us through her decade-long battle with anger after returning from Afghanistan. When conventional treatments failed, she found breakthrough in ancient plant medicines that allowed her to physically release trauma stored in her body. Her simple yet profound tools for healing—breath work, journaling, and gratitude practice—cost nothing but offer everything.Actor and former metal band frontman Jacob Wilson courageously reveals his journey from self-hatred to self-acceptance as a gay man in environments that rejected his identity. Now working in Hollywood, he demonstrates how leading with love and authenticity creates genuine connections in an industry known for toxicity and transactional relationships. The thread connecting these diverse stories? Understanding that beneath anger lies pain—often the pain of a wounded inner child "screaming for help." This perspective shift transforms how we view not just our own anger, but the anger we encounter in others.Whether you're carrying resentment, battling addiction, healing from trauma, or simply seeking more meaningful connections, these stories remind us that the path forward always involves the choice to default to love. Ready to make that choice in your own life? This episode gives you both the inspiration and practical tools to begin. To connect more with Dr. Harte, book a FREE discovery call!https://calendly.com/drharte/free-discovery-call-w-dr-harteSupport the show#thetruthaboutaddiction#sobriety#the12steps#recovery#therapy#mentalhealth#podcasts#emotionalsobriety#soberliving#sobermindset#spirituality#spiritualgrowth#aa#soberlife#mindfulness#wellness#wellnessjourney#personalgrowth#personaldevelopment#sobermovement#recoveroutloud#sobercurious#sobermoms#soberwomen#author#soberauthor#purpose#passion#perspective
