What happens when you confront your darkest moments and choose to heal, instead of staying stuck in the pain?In this raw and inspiring episode of The Big Silence, Karena Dawn is joined by Dr. Samantha Harte, author of Breaking the Circuit. She's a physical therapist, author, and sobriety advocate. Harte opens up about rebuilding her life after addiction and navigating a traumatic childhood. Through it all, she discovered the healing power of vulnerability and forgiveness, ultimately learning to rewire her brain and change her story. Her picture-perfect high school existence masked unbearable pain, leading to a soul-shaking drug overdose. While navigating the challenges of sobriety in the midst of a crumbling marriage and painful loss, Samantha found herself at rock bottom. What came next was a radical reworking of her inner life and the birth of a new identity — one grounded in compassionate curiosity, revolutionary responsibility, and finally, self-forgiveness.This conversation is a masterclass in what it means to confront your truths, rewire your mind, and write a new story — no matter how broken the past may seem. How Do We Take Pain and Turn It Into Something Positive, Even Transformative?Dr. Harte explains why healing begins with self-forgiveness — and how shame, silence, and perfectionism keep us stuck in destructive loops. Learning to forgive, starting with yourself, is key to breaking free from toxic cycles.(00:058) When Everything Looks Fine — But You're Falling Apart InsideThe internal divide between outward success and private suffering: “Straddling myself between these two worlds, these two identities, like everything is fine and nothing is ok.”A very ill-timed overdose that became a wake-up callThe unbearable weight of feeling stuck with yourself when your inner voice becomes your fiercest critic(00:10:04) Five Years Sober, Still Miserable: The Trap of White-Knuckling RecoveryPerfectionism can doom sobriety: “It works until it doesn't. Perfectionism collapses in matters of the heart.” Her marriage collapses under the weight of unspoken resentment, infidelity, and untreated trauma.“All of those mechanisms that kept me safe as a girl were killing me as an adult.”(00:18:30) Spiritual Rock Bottom: The Breakthrough Moment That Changed EverythingHow addiction takes hold, even when you're convinced you have it under controlKnowing when you've hit "spiritual rock bottom" and turning it into a catalyst for changeTurning your deepest fears and pain into life-altering breakthroughs(00:22:40) Compassionate Curiosity: The Self-Talk That Can Save Your LifeIntercepting your inner critic with the triangle of compassionate curiosity and radical responsibility: “Why did I just do that?” and “What am I gonna do about it now?” The parenting advice we all need: how apology clears shame and models emotional intelligence for your kids.(00:31:30) Betrayal, Infidelity, and the Truth That Finally Came OutThe loss of her sister and her declaration to write a bookBecoming the “girl who 12-stepped the world.” Applying AA's 12-step program to other aspects of life“The fear of any type of judgment absolutely collapsed.” Rising to the level of our goals and creating habits (00:31:30) Healing and Forgiveness: Can You Ever Forgive the Unforgivable? The struggle and importance of forgiving others (and yourself) in the healing processWhy forgiving betrayal doesn't mean condoning hurtful actionsThe spiritual and emotional liberation that comes with true forgiveness(00:53:00) Rewiring the Mind:...

Send us a textTraumatic experiences shape us in profound ways, often gifting us with remarkable strengths that help us survive—but what happens when those same strengths become barriers to our healing? This captivating panel discussion features Paige and Joe, two individuals who've faced devastating traumas yet found ways to transform their adaptive traits from potential liabilities back into personal assets. Their stories offer a masterclass in self-awareness and emotional growth.Joe, paralyzed after a military service injury in 2007, shares how his unwavering positivity and resilience helped him adapt to life in a wheelchair. While these traits enabled him to build a beautiful family with three children, they also created what he calls a "hardened shell" that limited his emotional range. "I started seeing life in black, white, and gray," he reveals, explaining his recent journey to experience "more color" by finally allowing himself to process long-suppressed grief.Paige, who lost her father to suicide at age ten and later became a military spouse, identifies as a "survivor." This trait carried her through unimaginable hardships but eventually morphed into a pattern of neglecting her own needs. Through her work as a yoga studio program manager, she's learning to apply the mindfulness practices she teaches to her own healing journey. The conversation takes a powerful turn when discussing parenting, with both guests sharing vulnerable moments where they recognized opportunities for growth. These stories highlight how we can model accountability and self-compassion for our children while healing ourselves. What makes this episode exceptional is its practical wisdom about balancing seemingly contradictory needs: How do we honor our emotions without becoming consumed by them? How do we maintain boundaries while validating feelings? How do we break unhealthy cycles without breaking ourselves?Ready to transform your own character liabilities back into assets? Send us a textWhat happens when the very traits that make you successful in your career become obstacles in your personal life? This riveting panel discussion featuring coaches Alejandra Perez and Michael Graham explores the fascinating terrain of redirecting character traits from liabilities into assets.Alejandra, a self-described driven optimist who reinvented herself multiple times across engineering, sales, and entrepreneurship, reveals how excessive positivity without preparation led to business failure. Rather than abandoning her optimistic nature, she found ways to ground it in reality while maintaining its motivational power. Her journey offers profound insights for dreamers who struggle to bridge the gap between vision and execution.Michael brings a unique perspective as a retired police sergeant whose authoritative presence and problem-solving abilities were crucial in law enforcement. He shares vulnerably about recognizing how these same traits created disconnection with his wife and children at home.

Send us a textWhat happens when anger transforms into acceptance? When betrayal leads to forgiveness? When rage opens the door to healing? This powerful episode brings together three extraordinary individuals who've walked through fire and emerged with wisdom that could change your life.Bruce Cardenas, a former Marine who built a billion-dollar nutrition brand, shares the gut-wrenching story of business betrayal that would have broken many. Instead of seeking vengeance, he chose forgiveness—a choice informed by asking forgiveness from his own brother and watching his son battle alcoholism. His revelation that "life is extremely short" offers a perspective that makes holding grudges seem like precious time wasted.Military veteran Amy takes us through her decade-long battle with anger after returning from Afghanistan. When conventional treatments failed, she found breakthrough in ancient plant medicines that allowed her to physically release trauma stored in her body. Her simple yet profound tools for healing—breath work, journaling, and gratitude practice—cost nothing but offer everything.Actor and former metal band frontman Jacob Wilson courageously reveals his journey from self-hatred to self-acceptance as a gay man in environments that rejected his identity. Now working in Hollywood, he demonstrates how leading with love and authenticity creates genuine connections in an industry known for toxicity and transactional relationships. The thread connecting these diverse stories? Understanding that beneath anger lies pain—often the pain of a wounded inner child "screaming for help." This perspective shift transforms how we view not just our own anger, but the anger we encounter in others.Whether you're carrying resentment, battling addiction, healing from trauma, or simply seeking more meaningful connections, these stories remind us that the path forward always involves the choice to default to love. Send us a textWhat happens when a successful healthcare professional faces a personal tragedy that forces her to reimagine her entire purpose? Dr. Samantha Harte's raw, vulnerable story takes us from disillusionment with the healthcare system to entrepreneurial success, and ultimately to a profound spiritual awakening following her sister's fatal overdose.Dr. Harte's journey began when she realized the healthcare system wasn't serving patients or providers. Despite her doctorate in physical therapy, she was earning just $33 an hour while witnessing trainers and yoga instructors making two to five times more. With a combination of necessity (a marital crisis) and vision, she launched a cash-based practice swimming against the current of insurance-driven care. The result? A remarkable 30% profit margin in her first year by simply meeting a need others weren't addressing. But business success wasn't the end of her story—it was just the beginning. When Dr. Harte received the devastating news of her sister's fatal drug overdose in 2022, everything changed. Despite being 15 years sober herself, this tragedy forced her to confront what she calls "soul sickness" in a new way. She began seeing addictive patterns everywhere—in her wealthy clients' obsession with productivity, martyrdom, and thinness. This awakening led her to write a bestselling book, reconnect with her early dreams of music and performance, and develop a powerful philosophy: "If you want to be a financial mogul, become a spiritual billionaire first."Ready to transform your relationship with success, recovery, and purpose? This episode offers both practical insights for entrepreneurs and profound wisdom for anyone seeking deeper meaning. As a physical therapist, Samantha spent years treating bodies in pain. But what she uncovered was that so many of her patients — high achievers, athletes, professionals — weren't just dealing with physical symptoms. They were carrying deep emotional wounds: perfectionism, people-pleasing, addiction to productivity, and shame. And it wasn't just in their heads. It was in their nervous systems. In her new book, Breaking the Circuit, she shares: ✨ Her personal journey through addiction recovery, grief, and self-forgiveness ✨ How trauma patterns live in the body and affect our health ✨ Why she reinvented the 12-step recovery model for modern women ✨ The life-changing practice of making amends… to yourself One thing Samantha said that stuck with me: “At one point, those coping mechanisms saved you. But if they're running the show now, they're keeping you stuck.” We dove deep into the intersection of trauma, nervous system rewiring, hormone health, and how so many women are unknowingly trapped by patterns they didn't choose. Patterns that are stealing their joy, their health, and their sense of worth. If you've ever carried guilt, shame, or perfectionism on your back like a heavy bag of bricks — you're not alone. And it is possible to heal. This conversation cracked something open for me, and I hope it does the same for you. Dr. Samantha Harte is a physical therapist, author, performing artist, podcast host, and sober mom of two. She has been featured on ABC7 and CBS and has been written up in People magazine, Time magazine, Best Life, and The New York Post for her expertise on the intersection of mind-body health and wellness. Her self-help memoir, Breaking The Circuit: How to Rewire Your Mind for Hope, Resilience and Joy in the Face of Trauma is a reinvention of the 12 steps of recovery so that anyone, addict or not, can turn heartbreak into hope.
