D'Arcy Waldegrave: Twickenham - the yardstick for Robertson's tenure

The All Sport Breakfast

Yardstick. Barometer. Criterion. Whatever you call it, tomorrow's test match against the most irritating team in world rugby will determine how Scott Robertson's tenure to date will be judged. With no respect whatsoever to the Welsh, the Twickenham bunfight will seal the Grand Slam or leave another dirty smudge in Razor's copybook, which has already attracted a fair amount of filth this year. The phenomenal melt down in Wellington against the Springboks and the Pumas mess will be conveniently overlooked should this season end with Grand Slam success, although imagine rolling the English then getting mugged with a leek the next week. That too would eclipse the South African and Argentine embarrassments, right? The first half of Razor's reign has been punctuated by inconsistency as he has attempted to settle into life in the international arena. His much-referenced armour chink has always been his lack of experience in the rarefied air of global test match confrontations. It's more than fair to say that as sign posted as this issue has been, Robertson has still struggled with direction in this space. He has been conservative with his selections, but he's also given characters a decent shot at retaining their jersey even if they haven't set their matches on fire, Damien McKenzie and Billy Proctor for example. He's also ushered some players out the back door, goodbye Ioane, Sotutu, and Reece, and introduced some potential long-term superheroes in the form of Holland, Parker, Sititi, and Lakai. He's also overseen some truly awful second half stats and his collection of cards would look great at the Armageddon expo, but bloody awful in the sheds. As it stands, his half term report is a B, but knocking on the door of an A-, dependent on the Twickenham exchange.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

U.S. farmer sentiment edged slightly higher in October, with the Purdue University/CME Group Ag Economy Barometer rising 3 points to a reading of 129. The increase was fueled primarily by a rise in the Index of Current Conditions, which climbed 8 points to 130, while the Index of Future Expectations was virtually unchanged at 129, just 1 point higher than in September. Farmers' appraisals of current conditions highlight a “tale of two economies”: Livestock producers remain highly optimistic about their farm conditions, partly supported by record-high profitability in the beef sector, while crop producers report a more pessimistic view of the current situation on their farms due to low profit margins across major crop enterprises. The barometer survey took place Oct. 13-17. Purdue ag economists James Mintert and Michael Langemeier review the results from the October Ag Economy Barometer and give their insights into farmer sentiment and the farm economy. The Ag Economy Barometer sentiment index is calculated each month from 400 U.S. agricultural producers' responses to a telephone survey. Further details on the full report is available at https://purdue.edu/agbarometer. In Episode 297, Don Higgins and Terry Peer break down the early-November conditions, the recent cold front, and how rising barometric pressure is lighting up deer movement across the Midwest. Don shares his observations from the first morning of November, where movement exploded after a long lull, and dives deep into the importance of barometric pressure, wind, and dough-to-buck ratios. The duo also discusses how subtle herd management and observation can drastically change rut activity on your property. Later in the episode, Don opens up with one of his most powerful reflections yet — the lesson of “Pull the Trigger.” Inspired by his friend Todd Hewing and his late father, Don connects how seizing opportunity applies both in the woods and in life. Terry follows with his own story about taking risks, faith, and how trusting God led to unexpected blessings. The Higgins Hot Seat and Midwest Land Group's listener questions cover: How to scout and hang a last-minute rut stand Playing the wind for mature bucks Apple tree and food plot strategy E-bike access and ground scent The emotional challenge of shooting bucks you've watched grow Finally, Don and Terry analyze Weather Underground charts to predict when the rut will peak — including what might happen around the legendary November 7th–8th window this year. In this episode of The Everyday Millionaire, host Patrick Francey sits down with David Morgan, one of the most trusted voices in precious metals. They unpack why gold prices are hitting records, why silver may be entering an acceleration phase, and how investors can think clearly amid rising inflation, debt saturation, and central bank experimentation with digital money. David frames gold as a forward-looking barometer of systemic stress, not a relic. When policymakers papered over 2008's failures, the cycle of distortion deepened. Today gold's breakout is signaling that the reset is moving closer. The conversation covers practical strategy. David explains how to hold and even spend metal using modern vault-backed debit systems that settle in fiat on the merchant side, while preserving metal ownership on the user side. They address the realities of CBDCs and digital IDs, the importance of assets with no counterparty risk, and why it can still make sense to buy metals at all-time highs during late-cycle moves. Patrick and David also explore the moral dimension of money, the erosion of trust, and the role of logic and critical thinking in cutting through narratives. Listeners will come away with a clearer understanding of gold and silver as tools for wealth preservation, context for central bank gold buying, and a checklist mindset for navigating uncertainty. Whether you are new to precious metals or considering how to position a broader portfolio, this episode offers grounded guidance without hype.

Farmer sentiment held steady in September, as the Purdue University/CME Group Ag Economy Barometer rose just 1 point to a reading of 126. However, there was a shift in producers' perceptions of current conditions and their expectations for the future. The Index of Current Conditions fell 7 points to 122, while the Index of Future Expectations climbed 5 points to 128. The survey was conducted following the U.S. Department of Agriculture's release of the September Crop Production report and the World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report. These reflected farmers' concerns about current conditions, particularly over record-high corn and soybean yields, which were pressuring crop prices. At the same time, optimism about the future was supported by farmers' belief that U.S. policy is “headed in the right direction” and by expectations that potential government support, like the 2019 Market Facilitation Program (MFP), will provide payments to farmers in compensation for lower commodity prices. The barometer survey took place Sept. 15-19. Purdue ag economists James Mintert and Michael Langemeier review the results from the September Ag Economy Barometer and give their insights into farmer sentiment and the farm economy.   The Ag Economy Barometer sentiment index is calculated each month from 400 U.S. agricultural producers' responses to a telephone survey. Further details on the full report is available at https://purdue.edu/agbarometer. Approximately 2,000 individuals were killed, and 9,000 injured. Eric was one of 37 people who lost his vision that day. He went on to attend the Halifax School for the Blind, but unconventional, he defied all expectations of him becoming a washing machine repair man and followed his father and brothers into the field of car mechanics. Farmer sentiment dipped again in August as the Purdue University-CME Group Ag Economy Barometer Index fell 10 points to 125. Producers were markedly less optimistic about the future in August as the Index of Future Expectations dropped 16 points to 123. This was the lowest reading for the future index since last September. Purdue ag economists James Mintert and Michael Langemeier share insights into the results of the August 2025 survey, conducted from August 11-15, in this episode of the Purdue Commercial AgCast. Sentiment differed widely among producers depending on whether their farm is primarily a crop operation or a livestock operation. Responses from crop producers this month were much less optimistic than those from livestock producers, which indicates the disparity in profitability between crop and livestock enterprises. Beef cattle operations in particular are experiencing record profitability as the smallest cattle inventory since 1951 has pushed cattle prices to record levels. This stands in sharp contrast to returns for crop production which have weakened in 2025. Farmer sentiment continues to weaken, as the Purdue University/CME Group Ag Economy Barometer declined again in July. Purdue ag economists James Mintert and Michael Langemeier share insights into the results of the July 2025 survey, conducted from July 7-11, in this episode of the Purdue Commercial AgCast. Farmer sentiment weakened in June as the Purdue University-CME Group Ag Economy Barometer fell to 146, down from 158 a month earlier. Purdue ag economists James Mintert and Michael Langemeier share their insight into the results of the June 2025 survey, conducted from June 9-13, in this episode of the Purdue Commercial AgCast. Key takeaways include a sharp decline in the Future Expectation Index, a stable Current Condition Index, a drop in the Farm Financial Performance Index, and a surprising rise in the Farm Capital Investment Index. The episode explores various factors impacting farmer sentiment, such as policy uncertainty, trade, tariffs, input costs, and labor issues. The Ag Economy Barometer sentiment index is calculated each month from 400 U.S. agricultural producers' responses to a telephone survey. Further details on the full report is available at https://purdue.edu/agbarometer. From elation to concern to outright hyperbolic right wing smear, reaction to Zohran Mamdani's win in the New York City Democratic mayoral primary is all over the spectrum. Naturally, progressives are elated and believe the result portends a progressive-led blue wave for 2026 and beyond; establishment Democrats seem a little angst-riddled, fearful an ascendent democratic socialist (eek! That word!!!) could be a point of attack from the right, and of course, the right and their President, who are all too keenly aware their base is unaware the differences between "Marxist communism" and "democratic socialism."So what is there to make of it, and does any of it translate to an effect on 2026 midterms, for Georgia Democrats or even here in Atlanta's mayoral race? Yet to be seen, but it doesn't stop me from discussing. One Georgia lawmaker, friend of the show, Rep. Ruwa Romman, actually campaigned for Mamdani. ------As Mario Guevara's arrest and detention draws first amendment advocates' ire, the charges that even led to his arrest have been dropped, but ICE has indicated no reversal of course on their part in seeking to deport the reporter. Meanwhile, overcrowding at the south Georgia immigration detention facility Geuvara remains in is overcrowded, leading to inmates sleeping on the floor and resorting to 3 A.M. showers to find the time to even have one, along with rationing of food. I find it all worth mentioning because hearts and minds are softening and changing, even in ruby red MAGA hotspots like Whitfield County and its largest city, Dalton, Georgia. Patricia Murphy at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution spent a lot of time there gauging Dalton's citizens on where their minds are now that ICE is raiding workplaces and wreaking havoc on economies like that in Dalton. Even a staunch Republican state lawmaker is showing signs of having empathy for the immigrant population his community - and thus his own businesses' bottom lines - plight.

Farmer sentiment reached a four-year high in May. Purdue ag economists James Mintert and Michael Langemeier share their insight into the results of the May 2025 Purdue University-CME Group Ag Economy Barometer survey, conducted from May 12-16, in this episode of the Purdue Commercial AgCast. The barometer rose 10 points to 158, the highest since May 2021, driven by optimism about future and current farm conditions. The Farm Financial Performance Index also saw an increase, while the Farm Capital Investment Index declined slightly. Other key points include a surprising jump in the Short-Term Farmland Value Expectation Index, shifting attitudes toward ag exports, and concerns about labor impacts due to U.S. immigration policies. Current farmer concerns remain centered on high input costs and interest rates, and there is notable interest in the passage of a new 2025 farm bill. The Ag Economy Barometer sentiment index is calculated each month from 400 U.S. agricultural producers' responses to a telephone survey. Further details on the full report is available at https://purdue.edu/agbarometer. Will the November 1 trip to Nebraska be the barometer game for the Trojans?

Peristyle Podcast - USC Trojan Football Discussion

In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back in studio talking about the 2025 USC football schedule and how the early November trip to Lincoln could be the determining factor for the Trojans having a successful campaign. After finishing the regular season 6-6 in 2024 with no true Big Ten road victories, USC will try to take a huge step forward and be a real factor in the conference title race this season. To do so, the Trojans will need to grind out some tough victories on the road and we are circling that November 1 date against the Cornhuskers as the barometer game for USC. Looking at the way too early top-25 polls USC will face a few ranked teams on the road including Notre Dame, Oregon and Illinois and face off against Michigan at home. The post-spring SP+ rankings have Notre Dame at No. 6, Oregon at No. 7, Michigan at No. 10, Illinois at No. 19 then Iowa at No. 28 and Nebraska at No. 34 (with USC at No. 30). No other program on the Trojans schedule is in the SP+ top-50. Most sportsbooks currently have USC's over/under win total at 7.5, but barely surpassing that with an 8-4 record likely wouldn't be enough for Trojan fans to feel the season was a success. If we assume the pair of top-10 road games are losses, it doesn't leave much room for error for the Trojans to get to that 9-win mark. To have any chance of success USC will need to win its tough home games, so let's assume the Trojans go 2-1 with Michigan, Iowa and at Illinois. That leaves the November 1 game against Nebraska as the lynchpin to a successful season. The Huskers, like the Trojans, did a lot of work in the off-season to try and improve and some even feel Nebraska could make a run at the College Football Playoffs. USC got the better of Nebraska last season in the Coliseum, so Matt Rhule and company will be trying to return the favor when the Trojans come to town. In our opinion, both programs will desperately need that victory to take the next step towards conference respectability. CLICK HERE for 30% OFF an annual VIP membership to USCFootball.com!  Please review, rate and subscribe to the Peristyle Podcast on Apple Podcasts!
