A leading pensions expert is warning that the Government's auto-enrolment campaign for pensions - due to begin on January 1st - does not equip businesses with the practical information employers need to choose between auto-enrolment and existing pension options available. Feargal McKenna, co-founder of Pensions Awareness Week, which takes place from September 29th to October 3rd, and Head of Corporate at Moneycube.ie, was speaking to over 100 businesses at a Breakfast Briefing for Wicklow's business community this morning, which was also addressed by Tánaiste Simon Harris. The free event, at The GRID in Greystones, was organised by Wicklow's business networking group, East Wicklow Business Network (WicklowBusiness.ie) and the Local Enterprise Office Wicklow. Feargal McKenna unveiled a new Auto-Enrolment Calculator developed by Moneycube.ie specifically for employers and hosted on the Pensions Awareness Week website - www.pensionsawarenessweek.ie. The calculator - which is free to use - is designed to give Irish employers instant clarity about the true cost of auto-enrolment on their payroll and the impact on employees' take-home pay. It also allows employers to compare these costs with alternative pension arrangements, so they can make informed decisions before the scheme begins. Unlike most existing auto-enrolment calculators, which focus only on employees, Moneycube.ie's tool is built for employers, who ultimately decide whether to default into auto-enrolment or take action to establish an alternative scheme. The calculator is easy to use, with just six steps providing business owners, HR managers or finance teams with the information they need to decide whether to prepare their organisations for auto-enrolment or explore alternative options. Employers enter a few simple details about their workforce - such as employee numbers, salary levels, and contribution rates. The calculator instantly shows the total payroll cost under auto-enrolment, how much employees' net pay will fall, and the potential advantages of alternative options. Feargal McKenna, Head of Corporate at Moneycube.ie, says: "If auto-enrolment starts on January 1st, about 800,000 employees will see a reduction in net take-home pay, but employers still have time to choose a structure that can avoid that and possibly deliver better outcomes. "Our employers' calculator gives business owners, HR and finance teams instant, side-by-side numbers: the payroll cost under auto-enrolment over a 10-year period and how that compares with a well-designed occupational pension. Defaulting into auto-enrolment can disadvantage higher-rate taxpayers and limit retirement choices. The Government has released information about their Auto-Enrolment scheme, but it has fallen short in providing a straightforward tool to help people understand the options. Moneycube.ie's calculator fills that gap while supporting the goal of getting Ireland saving for retirement - something that is core to the reason we set up Pensions Awareness Week. "We built this calculator because employers need an instant picture from two, often opposing, perspectives: the finance team, focused on controlling costs, and HR, focused on benefits, recruitment and retention. Government may have cried wolf in the past, but businesses no longer have the luxury of waiting. If pension contributions aren't flowing through payroll by December, the gift under the tree this year - whether you asked for it or not - will be auto-enrolment… and it doesn't come with batteries." Sika (cervus nippon) is a mid-sized deer that was introduced to Ireland in the 1860s to the Powerscourt Estate. Soon after that, it started spreading across Ireland. Today, the main concentrations of sika are in Kerry, Wicklow, Tyrone and Fermanagh. More recently, it has also been found in Waterford, Galway, Limerick, and Wexford. The National Biodiversity Data Centre in Ireland lists sika as an invasive species. Despite that, it's afforded protection under the Wildlife Act. It is prized by hunters as a game species and a source of excellent quality venison on the one hand, and hated by foresters and environmentalists for the damage to forestry and biodiversity on the other.Sika is present on the entire European continent and, although not as widespread as in Ireland, it is also causing similar problems. This is reflected in the recent move by the European Commission to launch consultations to put sika on the Invasive Alien Species (IAS) list across the Union. This poses the obvious question: what does it mean for the Irish population of sika if the EC makes such a decision? Will or should it be allowed continuous protection with open and closed hunting seasons? Or should it be reduced to the status of vermin and be eradicated across the country? To discuss the potential future of sika deer in Ireland and present a whole spectrum of views about this species, and invasive species more generally, I spoke with four expert guests presenting different views on the subject. By listening to this episode you will hear from Professor Jaimie T.A. Dick who specialises in Invasion Ecology, Eoghan Daltun an award-winning author who has spent last 15 years regenerating an Irish Atlantic rainforest, Damien Hannigan a Government Appointee to the Irish Deer Management Forum and Public Relations Officer at the Irish Deer Commission, and Professor of Wildlife Restoration Ecology, Adam T. Fresh concerns have been raised that Clare farmers will be impacted by a controversial €4.5bn Uisce Éireann plan to pump water from the River Shannon to Dublin. The project involves the construction of a 170km pipeline that will extract 2% of the Parteen Basin's annual flow, to supply an additional treated water source to Dublin, Meath, Kildare and Wicklow. The IFA and ICMSA have agreed a compensation package with Uisce Éireann that's understood to be worth an average of 100,000 euro for affected landowners. However, Clare IFA Chair Stephen Walsh believes it could have unintended consequences.
In this powerful conversation, I'm joined by Karen Kruger, a mother of three, coach, and breast cancer survivor who shares her deeply personal journey of resilience, vulnerability, and hope. Karen was first diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2021. What was initially believed to be stage 1 was later revealed to be stage 3, leading to a full mastectomy, chemotherapy, and radiation. Beyond the physical toll of treatment, Karen opens up about the emotional rollercoaster—the waiting, the uncertainty, and the feeling of powerlessness that shook her world as both a woman and a mother. She reflects on the moments of exhaustion and delirium when she still had to show up for her children, and how the unwavering support of her family, friends, and community carried her through. Karen also shares the profound impact of Purple House Cancer Support Centre in Wicklow, where she found healing, connection, and the reassurance that she was not alone. Now, four years on, Karen has transformed her experience into a source of empowerment for others. With over 20 years of coaching experience, she supports women navigating life after a cancer diagnosis, particularly through the challenges of menopause. Her work is rooted in compassion, wisdom, and a deep desire to help women reclaim their health and sense of self. This is an episode about courage, community, and finding purpose in the midst of adversity. Karen's story is a reminder that while cancer changes everything, it can also awaken a new way of living—one day at a time. Find out more about Karen's coaching, workshops and Ireland's first dedicated podcast for women that have had a cancer diagnosis and are in the menopause www.karenkrugercoaching.com This is a public episode. Our next edition of the Local Selection welcomes Meath-based DJ and producer LAWRENCE to the series. The fast-rising artist has provided us with a live recording taken from his performance at this summer's Forbidden Fruit Afterparty in Wigwam, which took place in May earlier this year. LAWRENCE has spent the last few years meticulously developing his style as a DJ and producer. This has led him to explore a vast range of avenues that tend to fall under the umbrella of underground as well as commercial-leaning sounds. This open-minded outlook saw him play right across the country in Dublin, Limerick, Carlow, Galway, Wicklow and more. Supporting Max Dean, Luke Dean, LB aka Labat, Sunnysoposted and Ammara during this period. LAWRENCE has consistently toggled between a mixture of club shows and raves, while never straying from his focus that is spinning highly energetic dance music. This presence is much the same when it comes to his productions; depending on the mood and atmosphere, he has constructed a discography that generally covers most soundscapes. Jumping across genres, some of which include house, techno, trance, breakbeat and beyond. He has amassed an excess of 300,000 streams currently, with clearly no signs of slowing down. This success has seen his productions earn notable support from LB aka Labat, Future666, Thelma and Faster Horses. LAWRENCE shared some insights regarding this Local Selection, noting that 'This set was super enjoyable for me, I spent my time in the booth feeling very in control of the crowd and receiving great reactions for each track that was brought forward. With LB aka Labat on after me, I wanted to raise up the energy of the room across my slot - punching in as many heaters as possible. The set lingers as possibly my favourite one to date, and getting to meet some of my heroes in the booth whilst playing was pretty cool too.' He has also provided a tracklist with his contribution that can be viewed below: Set List: 1. Vivace - Funk Phenomenon 2. Prizefight - Lick My Deck (Prizefight Refix) 3. LAWRENCE - Space Cowboy 4. Ned Bennett - Steppin' (Faked Up Funk Mix) 5. LAWRENCE - Horny Tool 6. 6Sense x Sam Alfred - Concrete Jungle 7. Onlywithyou, Entasia - Find Ya Way 8. The Marine Institute's Explorers Education Programme is thrilled to announce its return to schools for the 2025-2026 school year, with an expansion that will bring marine-themed education to both coastal and inland counties across Ireland. This new nationwide reach is a testament to the program's success and growing demand for ocean literacy. "This expansion marks a significant milestone for the program, which has successfully delivered marine-themed educational content for nearly two decades," said Ms. Patricia Orme, Director of Corporate Services at the Marine Institute. "The sustained success of the Explorers Education Programme is a testament to its engaging and impactful approach to teaching students about our vital marine environment and supporting teachers in creating ocean literacy in the classroom. "We are delighted to support this expansion, reaching some inland counties through interactive online workshops and the continued development of our educational resources that are available to all schools online. This underscores our commitment to ensuring all young people are engaged in valuing and understanding the ocean's influence on our lives, and our impact on the ocean," she said. Dr. Noirin Burke from the Explorers Outreach Team, who will be leading the delivery to primary schools in inland counties, is particularly enthusiastic about this new chapter. "We are super excited to see the Explorers Education Programme expand to inland counties, bringing a wave of ocean literacy across the country," Dr. Burke noted. "Having grown up in Co. Tipperary, I understand how someone who lives away from the coast can still be passionate about the shoreline and spending time at the water. With nowhere in Ireland being far from the sea, an online interactive school module is a fantastic way of connecting students to our marine heritage and identity, and we are looking forward to exploring the ocean with all the schools we meet throughout the year." In addition to the online expansion, the Explorers Programme also welcomes eight new team members to its network, that will be providing outreach delivery to coastal counties all around Ireland. Cat and David McCann will be delivering the Explorers programme in Donegal, while new team members in Kerry, Elis Martineili and Dalia Alnajar, will also be delivering a range of marine-themed projects in schools in Limerick. New team members Claire Law and Lauren Cahill-Quinn in Cork, and Lauren Minion, Brian Parle, Angeleen Leckie-James and Rianna Carroll will be delivering in other key coastal counties around Ireland. Drawing on extensive backgrounds in both marine science and the primary school curriculum, these new and existing teams will provide teachers with expertise and support for a variety of engaging class projects and seashore safaris. Explorers project modules such as Learning about Squid, Fintastic Sharks, Turtle Talk with Sea Turtles, as well as The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly - Deep-sea Species, are some of the favourite modules delivered by the team, with new content being launched throughout the next couple of months. The coastal teams will also offer hands-on experiences, from seashore adventures to bringing the seashore to the classroom with aquarium modules, also being extended in counties in Dublin and Wicklow. For further enquiries about making bookings with the Explorers team, please visit www.explorers.ie or make enquiries at: http://bit.ly/3HQMXA0. The Explorers Education Programme is funded by the Marine Institute and managed by Camden Education and Galway Atlantaquaria. The teams delivering the program include Galway Atlantaquaria, The Sea Collective, Leave No Trace - Ireland, Sea Synergy, Old Cork Waterworks Experience, Oceanics Surf School, and Seashorekids.

He has been living in São Paulo, Brazil, since 2000, where he works as a translator of fiction, non-fiction and film scripts from Portuguese. In the submerged world of Flounder- part everyman, part flatfish-shipwrecked longing, philosophical wit, and lyrical precision converge.Doyle's sea-born metaphors shimmer with heartbreak, absurdity, and revelation across the tide pools of memory and myth. From underwater boathouses to data-streamed cubicles, Doyle threads ancient voices through postmodern pulses. Featuring Flounder, Blundra, Alex Iden Gray, and more, this collection drifts between high poetry and sly humor, from trenches of despair to flickers of grace. Jonah's Map of the Whale and Other Poems is a poetic deep-sea dive into the soul accessible to poetry and literature fans alike.

Today's Indo Daily comes from one of our sister podcasts, Under The Grill. The actor and viral comedian Peter McGann joins Kevin Dundon and Caoimhe Young in the Under the Grill kitchen to chat about his favourite dish of all time, pre-show nerves and his part in Sky Atlantic's Small Town, Big Story, which was written and directed by Chris O'Dowd. Wicklow-born Peter says: “Those jokes like ‘I came home, I was so drunk, I put the rashers in the toaster', that slap stuff is mostly gone from the comedy stage.” The dad-of-one adds: “My dish of choice is a seafood chowder in a sourdough bowl because it brings me back it to the best summer of my life. It's just delicious. I love seafood of any kind. “I was in college in Galway one summer and I was chasing a girl, who is now my wife, and there used to be a stall in Galway selling seafood chowder in a bread bowl. It brings back such good memories.” See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Send us a textBelieve is primarily a tool to help runners log details of their training so they can find patterns that will help them identify what is and isn't working in their training, but it is more than that. The Believe Training Journal also has examples of how pro runners Lauren and Ro fill in their journal, information that can help you bring your performance to the next level and quizzes to help you identify your personality traits so that you can work with them instead of against them; for example, I discovered there are two types of athletes, worriers and warriors, both can be successful, but they need to have different strategies.Lauren Fleshman found running at age 13 as an adventurous, scrappy tomboy looking for a place to belong. A top high school recruit out of California, Lauren went on to win five NCAA titles and 15 All-American honors to earn a spot in the Stanford University Hall of Fame. In her 12 years as a pro she won USA championships and international competitions, represented Team USA many times, and finished as high as 7th in the world amid many years of injuries and setbacks.Lauren's debut book, Good for a Girl: a Woman Running in a Man's World, was an instant New York Times Best Seller and won the William Hill Sports Book of the Year in 2023. She does public speaking, hosts Wilder Running and Writing Retreats, and her work is being utilized by schools and teams around the world.Róisín McGettigan-Dumas grew up running the beaches, trails, and roads of Wicklow, Ireland. She left home for a chance to compete in track and XC at Providence College, where she was an All-American x4. Ro competed in the steeplechase at the 2008 Olympics and was retroactively awarded the bronze medal in the 1500m from the 2009 European Indoor Championships. While she is retired from competitive running, Ro remains invested in sport as a licensed mental health counselor working with athletes, as the co-founder of the Dare to Believe Olympic education program, and as president of the Irish Olympians Association. Hi folks, here's another story from one of our live shows at the Harbour Bar in Bray, Co. Wicklow. We hope you enjoy!
In this week's episode - which is our last for 2 weeks (and for more mature listeners, not for little ears)... the lads are excited about being off on their holidays. Well, they're on a week off... PJ is working (doing a bit of acting) and Jim is confining himself to his castle - drawbridge up, moate full of guard hippos. This time they're (unsurprisingly) talking about the stuff you get up to on your time off, becoming a dad (VERY) late in life, the nightlife in Navan, the price of telly (and dodgy boxes), and being extra expressive for success! If you like what you hear here, tune into Radio Nova 100 for this pair of mad yolks: PJ Gallagher & Jim McCabe's radio show, "Morning Glory", every weekday from 6-10am.The IMRO Radio Award-winning show features news, sport, weather, traffic, competitions and craic every day, as well as the most seriously addictive music in town! Tommy, James and Paddy are back for The Football Pod after another riveting weekend of Gaelic Football - and for perhaps the very first time in five seasons, there's a bit of friction between the lads - it may have a little bit of something to do with Meath.(00:30) - Weekend Winners & the losers: Derry, Mayo, Clare, Rossies.(11:00) - Wicklow beat Westmeath and shock everybody but Paddy.(16:00) - Meath beat Kerry - softness, respect, injuries - an edge on the pod.(32:00) - Galway survive, what can they do? (38:00) - Dublin's power players shine through.(48:00) - Conor Meyler's return, Stars of the weekend, Best two-pointers.(58:00) - All-Ireland preliminary quarter-finals: McGuinness' Donegal crusade. We've got a Members Football Pod coming for you later this week too where we'll look ahead to another quality weekend of action. Vast, windswept, and seemingly untouched—the landscape around the Sally Gap in Wicklow is a place where history appears to vanish into the heather and mist. With no houses and few traces of human settlement, this moorland feels like a true wilderness.Yet, the story of this landscape is one forged by ancient forces, human ambition, and exploitation. In this episode, I continue my journey down the Wicklow Military Road into what some have called one of Ireland's last great wildernesses, uncovering a hidden history that stretches back thousands of years.Written, Produced & Narrated by Fin DwyerSound by Kate DunleaFeaturing: Frank Tracy, Deirdre Burns, Faith Wilson, Michael Fewer, Graeme Warren & Margaret Duff Garvey. This episode was funded by Wicklow Co Council and The Heritage Council. In 1800, in the wake of the 1798 Rebellion, the British military began construction of the Wicklow Military Road. Designed to bring control to the so-called “bandit country” of the Wicklow Mountains, this road now winds through some of the most remote and picturesque landscapes in Ireland. Its history is as dramatic as the scenery it traverses. Built in an Ireland still reeling from insurrection, the road has, over the past two centuries, borne witness to some of the most remarkable—and often dark—chapters in our history. From disappearances during the Irish Civil War to a German war cemetery, the Wicklow Military Road is a route steeped in intrigue and untold stories. This podcast explores this road through Ireland's bandit country. Thanks to Michael Fewer, Margaret Duff Garvey, Joan Kavanagh, Faith Wilson & Frank Tracy.Special Thanks to Deirdre Burns.Written & Produced: Fin DwyerNarration: Fin DwyerSound: Kate DunleaFunded by Wicklow Co Co & The Heritage Council Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/irishhistory.
