In this week's episode - which is our last for 2 weeks (and for more mature listeners, not for little ears)... the lads are excited about being off on their holidays. Well, they're on a week off... PJ is working (doing a bit of acting) and Jim is confining himself to his castle - drawbridge up, moate full of guard hippos. This time they're (unsurprisingly) talking about the stuff you get up to on your time off, becoming a dad (VERY) late in life, the nightlife in Navan, the price of telly (and dodgy boxes), and being extra expressive for success! If you like what you hear here, tune into Radio Nova 100 for this pair of mad yolks: PJ Gallagher & Jim McCabe's radio show, "Morning Glory", every weekday from 6-10am.The IMRO Radio Award-winning show features news, sport, weather, traffic, competitions and craic every day, as well as the most seriously addictive music in town! Today we're going back to a time when the greatest show on earth came to Ireland. It was July 1972, and against all odds — and with the help of a strongman named Butty Sugrue — Muhammad Ali touched down in Dublin to fight Al ‘Blue' Lewis at Croke Park.It was a week like no other: Ali jogging through Wicklow, dropping into pubs, charming street cleaners, even getting a crash course in Irish history outside the GPO. Ireland was spellbound.Journalist and author Dave Hannigan joins me today to talk about his newly updated and re-released book The Big Fight, which tells the inside story of that glorious mayhem — and how one of the most famous athletes in history left a mark on the Irish psyche that's never faded. Is TB in deer a growing concern for Irish hunters? What happens when you shoot a deer infected with TB, and what are the realities from a hunter's perspective? In this episode of the Conservation and Science podcast, we dive into the contentious topic of bovine tuberculosis in deer - an issue I've attempted to cover for over a year. While scientists seemed reluctant to discuss it publicly, this episode brings boots-on-the-ground truth from expert hunter Ashley Glover, who shares his firsthand experiences with TB-infected deer in Wicklow.Ashley explains how hunters can identify signs of tuberculosis when field dressing deer, noting that whilst most hunters may never encounter an infected animal, he found four TB-positive deer among his first twelve harvests in North Wicklow this season. We discuss the practical challenges hunters face when discovering a TB-infected carcass - from the unclear notification protocols to the costly disposal options. Despite bovine TB being classified as a "notifiable disease" with supposedly free testing and licensed disposal, Ashley's experience reveals a different reality, including a €100 fee for fallen animal services to remove a single carcass. The conversation tackles the disconnect between what hunters are taught during training versus the realities in the field, particularly when shooting deer late on a Friday with limited options for proper disposal. We explore the localised nature of TB in deer populations, which appears concentrated in certain areas of Wicklow rather than nationwide. This episode provides essential knowledge for hunters on identifying TB in deer and navigating the practical challenges of responsible carcass management, while highlighting the need for improved protocols within Ireland's wildlife and TB eradication programmes.Subscribe to Tommy's Outdoors: Conservation and Science NewsletterSupport the Podcast and Buy Me a Coffee.Recommended Books: tommysoutdoors.com/booksMerch: tommysoutdoors.com/shopFollow Tommy's Outdoors on Bluesky, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and FacebookMentioned in this episode:DOWNLOAD:How to Get Started in Deer Hunting in IrelandDisclaimerThe views and opinions expressed in this podcast are those of the individual participants and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of any organisation. First on Scene, Last to Heal: Emergency Workers and Fatal Collisions goes behind the scenes with the men and women of An Garda Síochána, the National Ambulance Service and the fire service as they share stories about fatal collisions on Ireland's roads, and how that impacts their way of thinking. Produced and presented by Alex Rowley, a young journalism student from Wicklow and IMRO-nominated broadcaster, it's inspired by the contrasting ways different members of the emergency services deal with their trauma. Some choose to open up to friends, while for others, it's as if nothing bothers them.Due to a spike in road deaths in recent years, the topic has been high up in the news agenda, and rightly so, but every bank holiday we hear appeals from high-ranking Gardaí, Government Ministers and the RSA. Rarely, do we hear from those who actually deal with these collisions and see the devastation firsthand. In the documentary, Paramedics Clodagh Murphy and Paul Malone, based in Waterford, tell us about the trends they see in responding to collisions and why they're always keeping their own family members in the back of their mind. The documentary also goes on patrol with Gardaí Leanne McCarthy and Ken Driscoll of the Roads Policing Unit in Abbeyfeale, Co. Limerick. Ken bravely opens up about how it feels to break the news of a death to a family, comparing it to handing someone an “explosive device”.We also speak with Sub-Officer Stephen Connolly from Monasterevin Fire Brigade in Co. Kildare, who speaks of the challenges faced by on-call emergency workers, who service their local community first and foremost. All emergency workers in the documentary have pleaded with people to put down their mobile phones, put on their seatbelts, follow speed limits, and not take drugs or alcohol when using the roads this Bank Holiday Weekend.Analysis from Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Malie Coyne, contextualises the issue, and further hammers home the importance of looking out for our frontline workers.

Imagine first experiencing the thrill of scoring a goal or kicking a point at the age of 51. That's the unlikely and thrilling turn life took this year for Laura Byrne, The Journal's Opinions Editor. This week Laura tells Sinead O'Carroll about her upbringing on the side of a GAA field in 1980s Wicklow. Football was hugely important in family life, but it just wasn't something girls played in her experience. As a result, an antipathy to Gaelic games developed - until Laura had kids of her own and they began to play hurling and football. Then, in recent times, Laura was talked into giving the 'Mothers and Others' programme a go at her local club. After years of being on the outside looking in, Laura is now an enthusiastic participant, chasing the thrill of the next score, while remembering not to apologise to opponents for tackling them. Her sporting story is poignant and uplifting and underscores the truth that it is never too late to lace up the boots and savour the joy of being part of a team.Get in touch: sinead@thejournal.ie and gavincooney@the42.ie Hosted on Acast. Taoiseach Voices Support for Responsible Data Centre Development as Echelon Launches New Facilities in Wicklow

The Taoiseach Micheál Martin today described two large-scale data centre facilities being developed by Echelon Data Centres in Co Wicklow as "the model for future data centre development in Ireland". Speaking in Arklow at the official launch of Echelon Data Centres' DUB20 and DUB30 facilities, the Taoiseach provided strong support for the data centre sector and the economic value it delivers for Ireland. Mr Martin said: "These two large-scale facilities demonstrate Echelon's commitment to responsible data centre development. They are located in a regional area where the grid isn't constrained, they will have the capacity to generate and dispatch power to the grid when needed, and they will facilitate the generation of renewable energy resources that will, in turn, help decarbonise Ireland's electricity system. "They are the model for future data centre development in Ireland - and they will deliver jobs and economic benefits for Wicklow, and will encourage further foreign direct investment in Ireland. CEO of IDA Ireland, Michael Lohan added: "Driving sustainable change sits at the very heart of IDA Ireland's Adapt Intelligently: A Strategy for Sustainable Growth and Innovation 2025-29. Indeed, our client companies are instrumental in shaping a green and digital global economy. Echelon's commitment to operating its facilities sustainably, responsibly, and with due regard for the environment is commendable. I wish the team continued success." Echelon will invest an estimated €3.5bn to develop the DUB20 & DUB30 sites, creating around 2,600 jobs during construction and 715 permanent positions at the two facilities once they are operational. However, an Economic Impact Assessment report prepared for Echelon by KPMG has calculated that the potential economic output of the DUB20 and DUB30 sites could be as much as €7.5bn during the construction phase, and €801m per year once both campuses are operational. The Economic Impact Assessment states that the potential economic output of the DUB20 and DUB30 sites could be as much as €7.5bn during the construction phase, and €801m per year once both campuses are operational. The report found that every €1 Echelon invests in the DUB20 and DUB30 sites could yield a return of €1.60 due to additional economic activity through supply chains and employee spending across construction and operational phases. It also found that for every 10 jobs created during construction, up to nine additional jobs will be supported elsewhere in the economy, while every 10 direct operational roles could sustain a further 16 jobs. Echelon Chief Operations Officer, Graeme McWilliams said: "Echelon's sites in Wicklow will generate broad-based economic value with measurable impact across the Irish economy that goes far beyond our initial investment. They represent responsible data centre development which supports regional development and job creation in partnership with good grid citizenship. "The energy demands of DUB20 and DUB30 will underpin investment in almost 1GW of wind-generated renewable energy, power that will help reinforce the national grid, increase Ireland's energy security, and support our transition from fossil fuels to clean, green energy sources." Echelon's DUB20 campus is being developed on the site of the former Irish Fertilisers Industries plant at the Avoca River Business Park in Arklow. DUB30 is being developed some 5km away at Kish Business Park. Last year, DUB20 became the first large-scale data centre in Ireland to receive a grid connection from EirGrid for more than four years. This reflects the fact that the site meets Commission for the Regulation of Utilities' (CRU) 2021 criteria for data centre connections. The grid connection will allow Echelon to begin work on a 220kV substation at the site that will allow access to the grid for up to 800MW of wind energy generated off the coast of Wicklow in the future. Echelon is also investing in solar, battery energy storage systems, and renewabl...

Send Me A Message!! The biodiversity crisis might seem like an insurmountable challenge, but amidst the doom and gloom shines a remarkable story of hope and transformation. Welcome to Wild Acres Nature Reserve in County Wicklow, where a couple's decision to trade corporate careers for conservation has created a thriving ecological paradise. When Brian and Gilly purchased four fields of intensively grazed perennial ryegrass in 2017, they faced a landscape stripped of life. Seven years later, their 34-acre reserve boasts 57 wildlife ponds, 15,000 native trees, and four acres of wildflower meadows teeming with insects, birds, and mammals. From otters playing in the ponds to woodpeckers drumming in the trees, the transformation has been nothing short of miraculous. What makes their story particularly inspiring is how accessible their methods are to everyone. As Brian explains, "Nature is very forgiving. Once you bring the habitats back, it will respond positively." Their experience demonstrates that even small actions can yield remarkable results. A wildlife pond—which can be as simple as a repurposed container on a balcony—can attract diverse aquatic life within days. Native wildflowers, whether in a meadow or container, provide critical food sources for pollinators. Vast, windswept, and seemingly untouched—the landscape around the Sally Gap in Wicklow is a place where history appears to vanish into the heather and mist. With no houses and few traces of human settlement, this moorland feels like a true wilderness.Yet, the story of this landscape is one forged by ancient forces, human ambition, and exploitation. In this episode, I continue my journey down the Wicklow Military Road into what some have called one of Ireland's last great wildernesses, uncovering a hidden history that stretches back thousands of years.Written, Produced & Narrated by Fin DwyerSound by Kate DunleaFeaturing: Frank Tracy, Deirdre Burns, Faith Wilson, Michael Fewer, Graeme Warren & Margaret Duff Garvey. This episode was funded by Wicklow Co Council and The Heritage Council. KINTO Join survey reveals 45% of Irish commuters stressed by their daily journey with many wishing they didn't have to drive

KINTO Join - a provider of sustainable mobility applications has revealed the findings of its survey which found that 45% of commuters in Ireland find their journey to work or university stressful. The research - conducted by Censuswide and involving 1,000 people who commute to work or university in the Republic of Ireland - found that more than half (51%) have considered changing their commute method. However, 48% have never tried a different mode of transport for their commute. Traffic delays and congestion were cited by 44% of commuters as one of their biggest frustrations. The other leading frustrations were fuel costs (30%), the time lost having to commute (30%), the weather (29%), and delays with services (15%). Driving by car is the most popular primary mode of transport (51%) among commuters. However, only 16% prefer to travel this way. If available, the bus was the most preferred means of commuting (25%), followed by the train (24%) and walking (23%). One in ten (10%) respondents said they would prefer a company or university shuttle. In urban areas, driving by car and getting the bus were tied for the top spot as the most popular primary mode of transport (at 32% respectively). In terms of generations, almost twice as many Generation X commuters drive by car (63%) than Generation Z commuters (32%). Of those who commute by car, 91% always or mostly do so alone. Their top reasons for travelling to work or university by car are that it is more time-efficient (48%), it is the only option (43%), and inadequate public transport accessibility (34%). The study found that the average daily commute time is around 1 hour and 10 minutes, whilst the average daily cost is €10. Train commuters have the most expensive journey to work or university (€13.14). At the other end of the scale, (excluding walkers) eBike commuters have the least expensive commute (€4.71). As for the average distance of a one-way commute, this is just shy of 17km, with those in Roscommon (30.56km), Wicklow (24.97km), and Westmeath (23.76km) travelling furthest. Meanwhile, respondents in Longford (6.13km), Waterford (9.58km), and Donegal (11km) have the shortest distances to travel. Patrizia Niehaus, CEO, KINTO Join Ltd, said: "It's ironic that while so many commuters in Ireland drive alone out of necessity, a significant number would actually prefer not to. They're frustrated - by traffic, rising fuel costs, and the stress of it all - but don't feel they have another choice. Of course, large-scale infrastructure upgrades are vital, but they take time. In the meantime, the congestion worsens, and emissions reduction targets slip further out of reach. That's why action at the micro-level is so critical. "A large share of short-distance travel happens for work and education. Employers and institutions are uniquely positioned to support more sustainable commuting through initiatives like shared transport schemes, carpooling platforms, or incentives for walking and cycling. When organisations take the lead, they not only support their own sustainability goals, but also drive behavioural change that benefits entire communities - cutting emissions, easing traffic, and giving people what they clearly want: the freedom not to drive alone." In 1800, in the wake of the 1798 Rebellion, the British military began construction of the Wicklow Military Road. Designed to bring control to the so-called “bandit country” of the Wicklow Mountains, this road now winds through some of the most remote and picturesque landscapes in Ireland. Its history is as dramatic as the scenery it traverses. Built in an Ireland still reeling from insurrection, the road has, over the past two centuries, borne witness to some of the most remarkable—and often dark—chapters in our history. From disappearances during the Irish Civil War to a German war cemetery, the Wicklow Military Road is a route steeped in intrigue and untold stories. Co. Clare Teenager Taking Pet Bunny Sector by Storm

While Eastertime may prompt a once-in-a-year focus on Easter eggs and the Easter bunny, for Co. Clare teenager, Emma Finucane, aged 18, bunnies are her year-round concern. Since setting up her fledgling business, Just Pets Ireland, last year, she has been slowly but surely increasing her sales of rabbit essentials' subscription boxes, even though she in the throes of preparing for her Leaving Cert. Having grown up on a small farm in Co. Clare, Emma has always found ways to turn a pound from small farm projects. She has reared calves and lambs but turned her attention to breeding and selling pedigree lop-eared rabbits in April 2023, which led to people from all over Ireland travelling to Clare to buy her mild-mannered pet rabbits. "Lop rabbits have been my most successful venture yet. Rabbits are easy to mind, and I have put a lot of effort into not just getting the right breed, but also rabbits with the right personality," says Emma. Discussions with new and experienced pet rabbit owners, who she found were having issues purchasing rabbit feed and bedding exactly when the rabbits needed it, led to her decision to set up a subscription box service to simplify the care of rabbits. The subscription box contains the essential things a rabbit needs every month - bedding, hay and feed - with a selection of rabbit care products and toys offered as optional extras. Her clients can subscribe for as long as they want, and receive a monthly box delivered directly to their door. She has invested her own money in the venture having saved money from jobs, sales of farm animals and her pet rabbits over the years. She now also sells additional rabbit care products, such as water bottles, beds and toys. While Emma is the sole owner of the venture, she gets a lot of practical help and support from her family. Her twin sister, Roisin, often helps her with both the packaging and deliveries of the boxes. Her father helped her with the set up her company and check out stock. Her mother designed her website, www.justpets.ie, where anyone can buy individual boxes or start a subscription. The boxes are delivered nationwide. The two sisters have helped out in both the family's and neighbours' farms, with house construction and renovation, and have done plumbing, tiling, and more. They both spent time in country fairs helping in a neighbour's stand, and this is where they learned the ins and outs of selling and getting customers. Hard work has been a natural part of growing up on a farm, even a small one. "My parents have always made sure my sister and myself have had a wide variety of experiences. They've always included us in any projects they have or encouraged us to work with others for wider experiences," says Emma. Just Pets Ireland is an Irish company, and Emma has, as much as possible, tried sourcing the items in the box in Ireland. The sawdust and hay are from Wicklow, but she's had to get the feed abroad, following the recommendations of a small animal vet specialised in rabbits. "It took a lot of research to get and source the right products, Brexit of course made everything complicated by limiting the products, but as I always wanted to source as much as possible in Ireland it was also not a huge problem," she adds. Emma now has regular customers and subscribers who receive their monthly box. Most of the business has come through her pet rabbit customers, but also through social media. She's hoping to expand further but is also happy with a slow progress as she needs to focus on her Leaving cert this year. "It does get stressful at times, and I can sometimes feel I don't have enough hours in the day for everything that needs to get done. I need to spend a lot of time on my studies in the coming months, but I'm lucky to have help from both family and neighbours. Emma's love of animals keeps her motivated. She explains: "When you have animals, you cannot choose not to do your jobs. You must feed and care for them, rain, or shine. You must b...
