In the Fifteenth episode There Is No Planet Earth Stories, I sit down with legendary DJ, producer, and remixer Justin Strauss for a wide-ranging conversation about his remarkable journey through music and nightlife culture. We explore Justin's early music experiences—from seeing The Beatles live to attending iconic shows at Electric Circus. He shares stories from his time as the frontman of the glam-punk band Milk n' Cookies, and his transition into DJing, including his first gig and influential residency at the legendary Mudd Club.Justin also reflects on his pivotal roles as resident DJ at iconic 80's NYC venues like Area, and The Ritz. Additionally, our conversation explores the origins and evolution of his prolific remix and production career, which continues to inspire across generations.“Few DJs could adequately represent the last three decades of New York nightclub history - no less do so with such iconic credentials as Justin Strauss. Since he was 17, when his first band was signed to Island Records, Justin has had a career that reads like a Who's-Who of the music scene, spinning at nearly every dance club that you'd ever want to go to. Starting as DJ at New York's legendary Mudd Club, he spun his way through The Ritz, Limelight, Area, Tunnel, M.K., Life, Centro Fly and more, pioneering his own distinctive sound, and becoming one of the most sought-after remixers and producers not just in New York, but in the world. He has worked with the gamut of artists - Depeche Mode, Hot Chip, Sergio Mendez, Tina Turner, Jimmy Cliff, B-52s, Luther Vandross, 808 State, Malcolm McClaren, Skinny Puppy, Goldfrapp, LCD Soundsystem to name a few and on over 300 records! Much of the new dance crowd that goes to hear Justin DJ today, doesn't necessarily know his history; they simply love his spinning because he always keeps them dancing and surprised, seamlessly mixing between choice classics, delectable rarities and innovative beats. For Justin, no genre or style is off-limits – he can and will mix anything, so long as he can keep the crowd enthralled. His self-proclaimed mission is “connecting the dots” between what might otherwise seem disparate musical periods and styles, while introducing exciting new sounds. He does so with infectious passion, subverting preconceptions about what's old and new, and inspiring young DJs with his masterful skill and ever-youthful spirit. But Justin Strauss doesn't stop there. As half of the production duos, Whatever/Whatever and A/JUS/TED, he continued to produce and mix records, working on remixes for the likes of Hot Chip, William Onyeabor,LCD Soundsystem, Blood Orange, Holy Ghost!, Franz Ferdinand, Beyonce. Working on new projects Extra Credit with Joe Goddard of Hot Chip & Marcus Marr, and with Max Pask under their Each Other moniker, whose debut E.P.'s were mixed by Soulwax and released on their Deewee label, with new releases coming soon. Touring the world Dj'ing at Panorama Bar in Berlin, Robert Johnson in Frankfurt, Zunkunft in Zurich to name a few. In fact, he doesn't stop at all.”Support the show
Als Bandmember huet seng Karriär ugefaangen, duerno Solo weidergemaach a senger Heemechtsstad Ghent. Säin Debutalbum huet hien zesumme mat senger belscher Kompatriotin a Sängerin Charlotte Adigéry am Duo erausbruecht, domat ee grousse Worf gelant an ënner anerem och schonn zu Berlin am Berghain opgeluecht. Fir seng lescht Plack “Letter to Yu” huet hie sech mam Doud vu senger chineesescher Mamm beschäftegt, déi 2008 tragesch mam Auto verongléckt ass, an et ass eng erstaunlech net-traureg Plack ginn.

L'album annonce la couleur : dédicace aux copaines, déclaration d'amour aux groupes qu'ils adorent (I Wanna Be In Your Band) ou encore rupture amicale (Waste My Time). Charlotte Adigéry, Bolis Pupul, John Carroll Kirby and Marie Davidson discuss second albums, having kids as a musician and collaborations. Charlotte Adigéry is a Belgian musician of Martinican and Guadeloupean descent, born and raised in Ghent. She's worked extensively as a solo artist and also as her punk alter ego WWWater. Bolis Pupul is a Belgian musician of Chinese descent who debuted in 2016 with the single Moon Theme / Sun Theme. They started releasing music as a duo in 2019 with an EP called Zandoli on Soulwax's record label DEEWEE. Last year, they released their debut album Topical Dancer, a multilingual 13-track project that explores themes of racism and misogyny. American pianist, record producer and composer John Carroll Kirby has a background steeped in jazz but with a signature sound that blends genres and styles. He's an in-demand collaborator who has worked with the likes of Solange, Frank Ocean, Miley Cyrus, Norah Jones and many more, and earlier this year he released his ninth album Blowout. Canadian producer Marie Davidson's hypnotic style combines analogue synthesizers and drum machines with vocals, leading to a prolific career both as a solo artist and member of creative trio L'Œil Nu.

This show is made possible by you! To become a sustaining member go to LauraFlanders.org/donate Thank you for your continued support! We thought that last year would go down in history, but this year is even worse for the number of anti-trans bills introduced into state legislatures, and the successful passage of many of those bills. 549 proposed bills, banning books, medical treatment, even access to the bathroom were introduced in 2023. 73 of those anti-trans bills have already passed and the ACLU's weekly tracker can barely keep score. As extremists crank up the volume on hate — trans people, especially trans women of color, are facing an onslaught of violence. As today's guest points out, the people driving the anti-trans movement are the same as those leading the anti-abortion movement. Imara Jones is featured in this year's “Time's 100 Most Influential People” for her work to combat disinformation against trans people. She's the producer of a podcast mini-series called “The Anti-Trans Hate Machine: A Plot Against Equality”. The final three episodes of the podcast will release this June and July. Jones is also the creator of “TransLash Media”, a cross-platform journalism, personal storytelling, and narrative project, which seeks to shift the culture, create empathy and save trans lives. Soulwax is best known for their remixes of such 2000s artists as LCD Soundsystem, Tame Impala, Gorillaz, Tiga, and more, but the band actually got their start as a catchy alternative rock band produced by the Chris Goss (of Masters of Reality) on their debut and Dave Sardy (Barkmarket) on their sophomore album, Much Against Everyone's Advice. Splitting their sound between chunky distorted guitars on tracks like "Too Many DJs" and "Conversation Intercom" and more a delicate approach on "Overweight Karate Kid" and "Flying Without Wings," it gives the album variety. But depending on which version you listen, the album can run long after an elongated lull in the middle that could be rectified with a reshuffling of the track list.
