▶ Monte le Son, le podcast # 112 La musique live est un sujet trop peu traité dans MLS, et il était temps que LE podcast des passionnés de musique s'y attaque. Aujourd'hui, beaucoup d'artistes jouent des instruments ou utilisent des effets qui proviennent directement d'un ordinateur sur scène. Pour assurer des prestations sans faille, de plus en plus de musiciens utilisent des contrôleurs custom répondant parfaitement à leurs besoins, et s'entourent de spécialistes de la technique, afin de déclencher en live un autotune, de programmer des sons préenregistrés, ou encore d'assurer une synchronisation totale avec les éléments visuels d'un spectacle (lumière, projection vidéo, etc.). Face à ce constant, Salman et Daz se sont posé une question : quelles sont les nouveaux défis techniques qui entourent la musique live ? I gave Sean Rowley a call after writing up an article on “Unguilty Pleasures” (see Chill Gonzales episode 64) - Gonzales' campaign against music snobbery and treatise on the pleasures of Enya's music. It became clear that the story of Rowley's own creation, Guilty Pleasures, was very much a candidate for the Art of Longevity. Guilty Pleasures became that wonderful thing - a content brand (before we called them that) that grew octopus arms. The club nights quickly grew by word-of-mouth, expanding to multiple venues, festivals, and international events, and becoming a fixture of the UK nightlife scene. Then came a series of successful compilation CDs, at a time when compilations still did big business in music. It went on to radio, live tours, and special events (including opening for George Michael at the new Wembley Stadium), helping to popularise nostalgia-driven and feel-good music culture. In Rowley's own words “nostalgia is a fucking wonderful thing”. Well, he did make a career out of it, so he would understand. For an idea to build the way it has, and to last so long, it needed to be something deeper. With Guilty Pleasures, Rowley challenged prevailing ideas of musical “taste” and helped normalise the celebration of mainstream pop, even in alternative spaces. He gave music snobbery a good clobbering and in doing so, established a legacy on DJ culture and the wider acceptance of joyful, communal music experiences. The evidence is everywhere: the enormously popular Despacio Disco launched by James Murphy (of LCD Soundsystem) and the Dewaele brothers (of Soulwax and 2ManyDJs). And then James Gunn of course, with the Guardians of The Galaxy soundtrack, which mined similar territory. The pandemic brought us Sophie Ellis-Bextor's Kitchen Disco. "We're trying to show more of who we are." The Belgian brothers unpack their decades-long career and first album in more than seven years. There are some songs that have become pervasive, nearly universally recognisable features of pop culture. And my guess is that even if you don't know the Belgian duo Soulwax (AKA 2Manydjs) by name, you'll know their biggest hits, like early 2000s indie electronic anthems "E Talking" or "NY Excuse." In this interview with Resident Advisor editor Gabriel Szatan, the brothers David and Stephen Dewaele talk about their decades-long career and writing their first album in more than seven years, All Systems Are Lying, which they road tested for ages before deciding to put it out. They also unpack bigger thematic arcs in their work and lives: the abiding influence of New Order's Power, Corruption and Lies LP; their creative philosophy ("If it sounds too simple, leave it alone);" and the nature of musical trends and revivals, which have fluctuated intensely since they began performing and releasing records. In the Fifteenth episode There Is No Planet Earth Stories, I sit down with legendary DJ, producer, and remixer Justin Strauss for a wide-ranging conversation about his remarkable journey through music and nightlife culture.We explore Justin's early music experiences—from seeing The Beatles live to attending iconic shows at Electric Circus. He shares stories from his time as the frontman of the glam-punk band Milk n' Cookies, and his transition into DJing, including his first gig and influential residency at the legendary Mudd Club.Justin also reflects on his pivotal roles as resident DJ at iconic 80's NYC venues like Area, and The Ritz. Additionally,  our conversation explores the origins and evolution of his prolific remix and production career, which continues to inspire across generations.“Few DJs could adequately represent the last three decades of New York nightclub history - no less do so with such iconic credentials as Justin Strauss. Since he was 17, when his first band was signed to Island Records, Justin has had a career that reads like a Who's-Who of the music scene, spinning at nearly every dance club that you'd ever want to go to. Starting as DJ at New York's legendary Mudd Club, he spun his way through The Ritz, Limelight, Area, Tunnel, M.K., Life, Centro Fly and more, pioneering his own distinctive sound, and becoming one of the most sought-after remixers and producers not just in New York, but in the world.
