Local Selection 306: Stephen Keddy

This week's entry to the Local Selection is a long-overdue mix from Stephen Keddy, a staunch supporter of Irish electronic music. Keddy has consistently championed Irish producers, often putting together mixes made entirely of Irish material, and this set is another strong example of that commitment. A veteran of the Irish club scene, Keddy began DJing in the late 1990s, holding residencies at venues such as the legendary Funnel Club and what is now Centrepoint. Alongside his club work, he has also contributed to short film soundtracks, blending experimental electronic textures with more dancefloor-focused production. In the mid-2000s, he hosted Squiggles MindFunk Inc from Michigan, focusing on early dubstep and forward-thinking bass music. After a period away from music, he returned during lockdown with live streams and the weekly K0rOna Sessions on Wicked 107.2, showcasing new dancefloor releases with a strong emphasis on Irish artists. He now runs the bi-monthly Squiggles MindFunk Experiments, continuing his commitment to Irish electronic music while spanning IDM, UKG, breakbeat, techno, electro, acid, house, drum & bass, and industrial, often weaving in his own recently produced material. Keddy remains a dedicated advocate for Irish music, and his Bandcamp profile, familiar to many producers across the country, reflects his reputation for early and consistent support. This mix, made entirely of local artists, feels like one of the most long-overdue showcases from any Irish DJ. Here, Keddy weaves together a fluid but unpredictable blend of genres, soundscapes, tempos, moods, and textures, creating an all-out celebration of Irish electronic music. Moving effortlessly from house to breaks, techno to psytrance and beyond, it's a combination that arguably shouldn't work on paper, but in practice, it absolutely does. It's a bold, boundaryless selection that highlights both the depth and diversity of the Irish scene, and Keddy's ear for stitching it all into a coherent journey. Hats off to an unsung hero. We need to talk about war. MI6 has warned that we are, in this country, now in the space between peace and war. The Government has announced an independent review into foreign interference with our domestic affairs. Europe is talking tougher and even Germany is now reframing its own dark past as a warning about what happens when dictators are appeased. Alex Andreou, Naomi Smith and Kenny Campbell are joined by Quiet Riot favourite Annette Dittert to take a closer look at just how serious the threat of the Ukraine situation escalating is. Originally from Ankara, Turkey, A. Burak Ipekci was fortunate enough to realise that the hospitality industry was his calling in his late teens. Already doing seasonal work in the industry, Burak went ahead to study Hospitality Management at Bilkent University, the country's first private university. A career that spans three countries and over 30 years, Burak has worked at Soho Grand Hotel, Hilton New York and Le Parker Meridien in New York before relocating to London.  After serving many years on the Board of Directors of the New York City Association of Hotel Concierges, at the time of his relocation to London Burak was serving as the youngest ever President of the association. In London, Burak worked as Head Concierge at South Place Hotel, Andaz Liverpool Street, The Westbury, and most recently at Hilton London Metropole before taking on the role in 2022 at The Royal Horseguards. In this podcast, Burak shares his professional insights, his motivations and why becoming a Les Clef d'Or Concierge continues to inspire young people working in hotels. Burak succinctly describes what a concierge does, the skills set necessary for successfully thriving in this profession and how technology has actually made his job easier.   With many awards under his belt, Burak also has been very active in the world of Concierge. He utilized the late 90s and early 00s serving on the Board of Directors of the New York City Association of Hotel Concierges in various roles from Membership Director to President. For the past decade, Burak has shifted his focus from the organisation's national to the international side. Other than serving as the General Secretary for the British section of Les Clefs d'Or for a couple of years, Burak also was elected to the role of International Assistant General Secretary in 2017 and continued on his journey as the General Secretary from 2019 for UICH Les Clefs d'Or. As an active Ambassador for Centrepoint, the charity that promotes career opportunities and accommodation for the young homeless, Burak also invests time working regularly with the US Charitable Trust encouraging underprivileged young people to choose the hospitality industry as a career path.  A lover of gastronomy, trivial knowledge and travel, Burak's international destination knowledge and professional network are second to none. He loves expanding that knowledge and network both by virtue of sharing what he has to offer freely and happily with fellow Les Clefs d'Or members and young members of the community at every chance he gets.

However, over the years, the community became mired in controversy due to allegations of sexual abuse, drug use, and other forms of misconduct. In 1991,Bert Potter was convicted of indecent assault and sentenced to two and a half years in prison for sexually abusing children within the community. After his release, he continued to be associated with the community, which eventually led to its downfall. In 2000, the Centrepoint Community was raided by police, and a number of people associated with the community were arrested and charged with various offenses, including sexual abuse, drug offenses, and firearms offenses. The community was shut down, and many of its former members have spoken out about the abuse and trauma they experienced while living there. The Centrepoint Community scandal remains a dark chapter in New Zealand's history, and it has had a profound impact on those who were affected by it.In this episode, we hear from one of the women who was abused while living in the commune as a child and how that abuse was pervasive.(commercial at 8:27)to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Inside sickening 'orgasm cult' where kids as young as 10 were forced into vile sex games and fed LSD by warped leader | The US Sun (the-sun.com)

This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp.  In this episode, we're joined by international journalist Anke Richter for a conversation about her decade-long investigation into sex cults and her own brush with ISTA, a shamanic ‘school' from the US with a base in New Zealand. Anke's recently published book CULT TRIP covers her labyrinthine investigation into how and why cults attract, entrap and destroy otherwise ordinary people, and asks what the line is between tribe and cult, participant and perpetrator, seduction and sexual abuse. We'll also touch on NZ as a hotspot in the ever-expanding cultiverse, from Centrepoint to Gloriavale - and why Anke's spearheading DECULT 2024, the country's first cult awareness conference. For a small-ish country you have some big cult problems, NZ. Time to get thee to a cult awareness conference! SHOWNOTES: Anke Richter is an international journalist based in Christchurch and the author of the international bestseller "CULT TRIP: Inside the world of coercion and control" (HarperCollins, 2022), as well as three other books published in Germany. Prior to relocating to New Zealand in 2003 via Tokelau in the South Pacific to serve as a foreign correspondent, Anke worked as a reporter in Germany. Her investigative and personal features have been published in various renowned outlets such as Die Zeit, Spiegel, FAZ, taz, mare, New Zealand Geographic, North & South, The Spinoff, Canvas, Sunday (Stuff), Listener, The Fair Observer, among others. Anke has also contributed to several New Zealand documentaries as a researcher and associate producer. As a public speaker, she addresses topics such as cult awareness, coercive control, and identifying red flags in the wellness industry. Anke is a co-founder of FACT Aotearoa (Fight Against Conspiracy Theories), actively involved in combatting misinformation. Anke Richter is one of the few journalists who has seriously researched authoritarian cults. Her own positive experience with a neo-tantra group helped her to understand the devastations caused by three very different cults: Centrepoint and Gloriavale in Aotearoa, New Zealand, and Agama Yoga in Thailand. Centrepoint was a free-love cult whose leaders were eventually imprisoned for sexual abuse and child sexual abuse. Gloriavale is a contemporary pseudo-Christian cult with bizarre sexual mores. Agama Yoga has been called the 'rape cult' and belongs to the neo-tantra movement - which promotes the notion of bliss or even enlightenment through sex. Anke gives readings from her well-researched and shocking book. A must-read that will become a classic. This is Part Three of Three of 'Do Not Disturb', the untold story of the murder of Sarah Gibson. In the summer of 1972, 24-year-old homeless man David Frooms murdered Sarah Gibson, as she lay in her bed at the RAC Club at 89 Pall Mall, London, SW1. But why? How did he know her, why did he attack her, why did he climb five sets of stairs to find her room inside of a very secure club, and why did he subject her to a four-hour ordeal? Was it personal, revenge or a series of unfortunate circumstances?Murder Mile is researched, written and performed by Michael J Buchanan-Dunne of Murder Mile Walks with the main musical themes written and performed by Erik Stein and Jon Boux of Cult With No Name with additional music, as used under the Creative Commons License 4.0 (Attribution) via Free Music Archive and YouTube Music.
