(Originally aired on May 21, 2019)Today, in this archive edition of Midday, Tom's guest is John Urschel, whose resumu233u includes great skill and high achievement in two areas that are not often, in fact, hardly ever, associated: football and mathematics. He is a former offensive lineman for the Baltimore Ravens who retired from the NFL at the age of 26 to pursue a career in math. The book is called Mind and Matter: A Life in Math and Football. He co-wrote it with his wife, Louisa Thomas. They spoke about the book at the Ivy Bookshop in Baltimore back on May 21st, 2019. This conversation was streamed live on WYPR's Facebook page. You can watch the video here.
John Urschel is a respected mathematician pursuing his PhD at MIT. He is also a former offensive lineman for the Baltimore Ravens. He may seem like a walking contradiction, but Urschel’s experiences on the field and in the classroom have brought him closer to understanding how emotion and reason, the body and the mind, are always working together. In MIND AND MATTER: A Life in Math and Football, co-written by Louisa Thomas, Urschel’s partner and an accomplished author and journalist, he invites readers into his unique life, where math and athletics both provide a path to make sense of the world around him. ABOUT THE AUTHOR:John Urschel is a former offensive lineman for the Baltimore Ravens and a PhD candidate at MIT. He has a bachelor’s and master’s degree in mathematics from Penn State, and in 2013, he won the Sullivan Award, given to “the most outstanding amateur athlete in the United States,” and the Campbell Trophy, awarded to the country's top scholar-athlete in college football. He co-wrote this book, with his partner, Louisa Thomas. John and Louisa live in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with their daughter. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/steve-richards/support
On The Gist, curse the gauntlet that is buying an event ticket online. In the interview, John Urschel played as an offensive lineman in the NFL all while pursuing the PhD that would support an accomplished career as a mathematician. The values he practiced in each field are the same, he says, but there the similarities between pigskin and math end. Alongside sportswriter Louisa Thomas—the two are married—Urschel is the author of Mind and Matter: A Life in Math and Football. In the Spiel, “lock him up” (and you know who “him” is) isn’t a great call either. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
