Imagine leaving your home in Washington, D.C., and moving to Hawaii mere weeks before the attack on Pearl Harbor. Barry Denenberg takes on this thought experiment and a world of family conflict in one of his offerings to the Dear America series. In this episode, we cover the absolute whirlwind that is Early Sunday Morning: The Pearl Harbor Diary of Amber Billows, Hawaii 1941. Released on October 1, 2001, Denenberg's novel provides a brutal portrait of a young girl making sense of the attack on the USS Arizona. Machinist Mate 2nd Class Martin Shew served on the USS Arizona, a battleship that suffered insurmountable damage during the Attack on Pearl Harbor. Shew was on his way back to the Arizona when the attack began. Before he could reach the ship, a Japanese bomb detonated the ship's magazines, causing a massive explosion on board and dealing significant damage. If Shew had been at his post at the time of the explosion, he would have been killed. Seeing that the Arizona was unsalvageable, Shrew was enlisted to help fight fires along the shore for two hours. After that, he helped carry the dead and dying to a mess hall that was being used as an emergency hospital. Editor's Note: Shew was a Machinist Mate 2nd Class at the time of the attack. Barbara Kotinek was just a young girl when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. She got an up-close view of the Japanese pilots when they flew over and the devastation along Battleship Row, especially the flaming USS Arizona. When the enemy flew over her Naval housing, they even waved to her and smiled. She climbed a clothesline to get a better view. Her family was so certain that the Japanese were going to invade Oahu, that her father gave the young girl a gun so she could do the unthinkable: Shoot herself and her mother if Honolulu was invaded. I thought there was only now.” “There's much more. There's all that goes beyond – all that is Elsewhere – and all that goes back, and back, and back. I received all of those, when I was selected. And here in this room, all alone, I re-experience them again and again. It's how wisdom comes. And how we shape our future.” - The Giver Lois Lowry is a beloved American author. She has written more than 50 books throughout her career and has twice been awarded the Newbery Medals for “the most distinguished contributions to American literature for children."  She won for her books Number the Stars in 1990 and The Giver in 1994. Lois' books vary in content and style yet deal with many of the same general themes including the importance of human connections. They tell stories about the effects of loss on a family and the role that we humans play in the lives of our fellow beings. This unedited conversation was recorded on March 4, 2022 in Lois' home in Falmouth, Maine. Lois shares stories about her life as the daughter of a career military officer in the midst of World War II, the experience of losing her son at a young age, and the profound impact her stories have had on people from around the world. Grief as a place of deep connection, including in the classroom, is present in this episode. An edited version of this conversation was originally published as the first episode of the first season, but is being shared now in its unedited form to kick off the second season of this podcast. To read how this conversation has grown in relevance for Rachael over the two years since it was recorded, you can find an essay published on the Along The Seam newsletter. For more about Lois Lowry and to read the transcript, visit: www.alongtheseam.com/lois-lowry

What An Owl Knows - Smithsonian Associate Jennifer Ackerman The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates Interview Series Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates Art of Living Interview Series on radio and podcast.  I'm Paul Vogelzang and as part of our Smithsonian Associates interview series, a wonderful, joyous, and important interview with our guest, New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Ackerman, who I'll introduce in just a minute. But quickly, if you missed any episodes, last week was our 718th episode when I spoke with University of Michigan's Gerald R. Ford Distinguished Professor, Dr. Arthur Lupia, who's written recently in Nature Magazine about how political endorsements impact scientific credibility.  Two weeks ago, in honor of Memorial Day and the USS Arizona, I spoke with Kevin Kline, executive director of Operation 85 and the USS Arizona.  There are still 85 “unknown” Navy and Marine service members from USS Arizona whose remains are in unmarked graves, and we can help find them.  Excellent subjects for our Not Old Better Show audience. If you missed those shows, along with any others, you can go back and check them out with my entire back catalog of shows, all free for you, there on our website, NotOld-Better.com. You can Google Not Old Better and get everything you need about us! For millennia, owls have captivated and intrigued us. Our fascination with these mysterious birds was first documented more than 30,000 years ago in the Chauvet Cave paintings in southern France. With their forward-looking eyes and gaze and quiet flight, owls are often a symbol of wisdom, knowledge, and foresight. But what does an owl really know? And what do we really know about owls? Scientists have only recently begun to understand in deep detail the complex nature of these extraordinary avians. Some 260 species of owls exist today, and they reside on every continent except Antarctica, but they are far more difficult to find and study than other birds because they are cryptic, camouflaged, and mostly active in the dark of night. Our guest today, Smithsonian Associate Jennifer Ackerman, author of the New York Times bestseller The Genius of Birds, pulls back the curtain on the nature of the world's most enigmatic birds as she explores the rich biology and natural history of owls and examines remarkable new scientific discoveries about their brains and behavior.  Jennifer Ackerman has been writing about science, nature, and health for three decades.  Her work aims to explain and interpret science for a lay audience and to explore the riddle of humanity's place in the natural world, blending scientific knowledge with imaginative vision.  Jennifer Ackerman will be appearing at Smithsonian Associates coming up, so please check out our show notes or the Smithsonian Associates site for more details.  But we have Jennifer Ackerman today and here is a brief passage from her new book, What an Owl Knows: The New Science of the World's Most Enigmatic Bird , which we'll be discussing, and is the title of Jennifer Ackerman's upcoming presentation at Smithsonian Associates. That of course, is New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Ackerman reading from her new book, What an Owl Knows: The New Science of the World's Most Enigmatic Bird. Please join me in welcoming to the Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates interview series on radio and podcast, Smithsonian Associate Jennifer Ackerman. My thanks to Smithsonian Associate Jennifer Ackerman.  Jennifer Ackerman will be appearing at Smithsonian Associates coming up, so please check out our show notes or the Smithsonian Associates site for more details. Dr. Arthur Lupia - Political endorsements can affect scientific credibility The Not Old Better Show - Inside Science Interview Series Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, Art of Living Interview Series on radio and podcast.  I'm Paul Vogelzang and we have one of the more intersting and timely shows with returning guest and audience favorite in Dr. Arthur Lupia, who I'll introduce, or re-introduce in just a minute. But quickly, if you missed any episodes, last week was our 717th episode when, In honor of Memorial Day and the USS Arizona, I spoke with Kevin Kline, executive director of Operation 85 and the USS Arizona.  There are still 85 “unknown” Navy and Marine service members from USS Arizona whose remains are in an unmarked graves.  Two weeks ago I spoke with  Dr. Kristi Tough DeSapri, women's bone health specialist and founding physician of Bone & Body Women's Health, to offer interviews and spread awareness of Postmenopausal Osteoporosis (PMO).  Excellent subjects for our Not Old Better Show audience. You can Google Not Old Better and get everything you need about us! Given our political climate, notwithstanding political parties and politicians, we are deluged with political endorsements.  When we stop to think about voting and how we decide. Today's guest, Dr. Arthur Lupia is the Gerald R Ford Distinguished University Professor at the University of Michigan. His research clarifies how people make decisions and form or break coalitions in complex political environments. Dr. Lupia will help us understand the persuasive nature of endorsements, which are apparently often so persuasive and may even do more harm than good, defeating their impact and damaging credibility.  Dr. Lupia will tell us today about  How political endorsements influence voters' perceptions and decision-making processes during elections, what factors contribute to the credibility of a political endorsement, and will share evidence that when a publication whose credibility comes from science decides to politicize its content, it can damage that credibility.    Let me set the stage briefly:  In 2020, Nature Magazine, a highly respected science publication, not political but subject to influence, endorsed Joe Biden in the US presidential election. A subsequent survey that we'll talk about today with Dr. Lupia found that viewing the endorsement did not change people's views of the candidates but caused some to lose confidence in Nature and in US scientists generally.    I want to jump right into this with Dr. Lupia, so please join me in welcoming back to The Not Old Better Show Dr. Arthur Lupia from the University of Michigan.    My thanks to Dr. Arthur Lupia, the Gerald R Ford Distinguished University Professor at the University of Michigan.  for his generous time today.  My thanks, always, to the Smithsonian team for all they do to support the show. In honor of Memorial Day and the USS Arizona, our guest today is Kevin Kline, executive director of Operation 85 and the USS Arizona.  There are still 85 “unknown” Navy and Marine service members from USS Arizona whose remains are in an unmarked graves. You may be able to help these heroes finally receive a proper burial. Let's do some good; let's talk about better and how to help, it's time now after 82 years! Even though it's been 82 years since the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor, those who lost family members on December 7, 1941, continue to mourn the loss. Most of the 1,177 sailors and Marines killed in the attack on the USS Arizona went down with the ship and were never recovered. However, the remains of at least 85 (and possibly as many as 150) service members were recovered but not identified. They were buried, remains comingled, in graves at the National Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu. It's part of an initiative led by Kevin Kline, a member of Sons of The American Legion Squadron 176. Kevin Kline is the executive director of the USS Arizona “Operation 85” project, and also the great nephew of Robert Edwin Kline, a sailor who was killed Dec. 7, 1941, aboard USS Arizona.  “Operation 85 is a mission to identify, through DNA, the 85 or more USS Arizona crew members, Navy and Marine Corps, whose graves have been buried 10 miles away marked simply as ‘USS Arizona unknowns,'” Kevin Kline will share with us why this is so important and how he is asking for support as we try every effort we can to reach and locate other family members, and honor their service.   Please welcome to the Not Old Better Show Genealogy Interview series on radio and podcast, Kevin Kline.
