Despite a short playing season, Kevin utilizes technology like Trackman and ChatGPT to analyze his stats, aiming to reach a plus handicap before his first child arrives. In this episode, you will learn: How Kevin used ChatGPT to analyze his strokes gained, Trackman data, and scoring averages to identify the "low-hanging fruit" in his game. Why "choking down" on a standard driver might actually lead to longer, more centered drives than a longer shaft. A deep dive into why Kevin looks at the hole rather than the ball for long putts and whether this inconsistency is hurting his short-game performance. Strategies for conquering the 5-handicap level putting Kevin currently experiences from inside 12 feet, including green reading and visualization techniques. Balancing the "Stack" speed training protocol with gym work and mobility, especially when "feeling sluggish". Mental hacks for committing to aggressive shots on narrow, tree-lined courses where "guiding the ball" is a recipe for disaster. Practice Formats, Pressure, and Tech The conversation shifts to practice formats that actually build skill under pressure — worst ball, best ball, and other creative ways to force better execution. Jeff also shares his experience with golf tech, explaining why he prefers Foresight over TrackMan. Spoiler: software accuracy and hardware reliability matter. The segment wraps when Jeff heads off to teach a lesson. How to Improve Without Practicing More For golfers who don't have hours to grind, Jeff lays out a simple, effective pre‑round routine: Arrive 30–45 minutes early Warm up with practice swings Chip with attention to posture and club length Putt for distance control, not hole‑making The goal: build confidence, reduce pressure, and walk to the first tee already feeling sharp. The Two‑Ball Practice Method John and Jeff break down a practice method where players hit two shots on every hole and only play the better one. The twist? You don't know which one will matter until after you hit both. It creates real pressure, forces consistency, and still keeps pace of play moving. It's one of their favorite ways to simulate tournament‑style focus. Mental Skills: Competing With Yourself The episode closes with a discussion on mental toughness. Playing “best ball against yourself” is a powerful way to sharpen focus and eliminate insecurity. Jeff and John remind golfers that the biggest enemy on the course isn't the swing — it's the fear of looking bad. The cure? Commit to good shots, stay present, and stop trying to impress anyone. We cover what Homer Kelly actually intended, the real meaning behind concepts like flat left wrist, swing plane, and lag pressure, and how modern golf science views these ideas today. You'll learn:What The Golfing Machine got RIGHT about the golf swingThe biggest MISCONCEPTIONS instructors still makeWhy many golfers were actually hurt by misinterpretationsHow modern tools like TrackMan and biomechanics compare to Kelly's theoriesThis isn't just another golf lesson — this is a deep dive into golf instruction history, biomechanics, and swing philosophy.Whether you're a coach, low handicap golfer, or just curious about legendary golf instruction systems, this breakdown will give you clarity on one of the most influential golf books ever written. As discussed in the video, many of the interpretations of The Golfing Machine have evolved (and in some cases, been misused), which is why understanding the original intent is critical.

Are you obsessed with your driver distance but totally guessing your yardages from 115 yards out? Welcome to the "dead zone."This week on an all-new F-O-R-E Minute Friday episode of The IMAGEN Golf Podcast, Top 100 Coach and PXG Staff Pro Daniel Guest tackles the most overlooked, "un-sexy" part of game improvement: Club Gapping. If you have a 20-yard gap between your wedges, or your 5-iron and 4-hybrid travel the exact same distance, you're basically playing with a 13-club bag—or worse, a bag full of guesswork. Daniel breaks down why modern loft-jacking, redundant fairway woods, and uneven yardage intervals are quietly ruining your scorecard. Plus, he gives you a simple, 4-step weekend audit to fix your bag, dial in your true median carry distances, and start dropping your handicap immediately.Golf is a game of proximity. You can't get close if you're guessing which swing to use. Stop practicing your mistakes and start playing better golf today!Key Takeaways in this Episode:The "In-Between" Panic: Why trying to "finesse" or "nuke" a club ruins your tempo and leads to fat or thin shots. The Truth About Modern Lofts: How manufacturers are tricking you with stronger lofts, and why it creates massive gaps in your scoring clubs. The 4-Minute Bag Audit: A step-by-step guide to finding your true median carry distances using a launch monitor. When to See a Fitter: How bending your irons just a degree or two can completely transform your approach game.Listen now and experience golf as you've always IMAGEN'd!SEO Keywords: Golf instruction, club gapping, golf yardages, golf equipment tips, how to gap golf clubs, golf club fitting, wedge gapping, golf distance control, lower your golf handicap, launch monitor distances, Trackman golf, GCQuad, Top 100 Golf Coach, Imagen Golf, Daniel Guest.Tags: #GolfTips #ClubGapping #ImagenGolf #GolfInstruction #GolfEquipment #LowerYourHandicap #TrackmanGolf #WedgeGapping #GolfBetterGuaranteed #DanielGuest #GolfPodcastConnect with IMAGEN Golf!Experience the IMAGEN promise: if you don't get better in just one lesson, your lesson is free! Sepp Straka joins Smylie Kaufman on The Smylie Show for a wide-ranging conversation on fatherhood, growing up between Austria and Georgia, competing alongside his twin brother Sam, and the path that took him from an under-the-radar junior to one of the best players in the world. Sepp talks about his time at Georgia, why that qualifying culture helped shape him, how he ended up with Srixon after college, and why his equipment setup immediately gave him confidence heading into Q-School.Later, Sepp gets into the real turning points in his PGA TOUR career: the early inconsistency, working with John Tillery, using TrackMan with more purpose, improving his wedge play and short game, and building a more complete process around practice. Then Charlie joins for Short-Sided to close things out with some lighter stories on food, Georgia guys, and dad life at home.⛳️ Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more golf insight!

James Leitz...Golf Digest Top 100 Instructor, Top 100 Club Fitter, and one of the game's earliest adopters of 3D motion capture and force plate technology, joins Mike Granato and Shaun Webb on the Athletic Motion Podcast to break down the framework he calls the "3 Grapes."In this episode, James walks through how the upper torso, pelvis, and center of mass move in the golf swing, why staying still is actually hurting your speed, and what separates a 99 mph Rory McIlroy from a long drive competitor. He also shares the story of how a single phrase from an aeronautical engineer in 1982 — "never guess what you can measure" — shaped an entire career.Topics covered:→ What the 3 Grapes are and how to trace them in GEARS→ Why deceleration in the downswing isn't always bad (and who got it wrong)→ The boat analogy, the jack knife, and how ground force really works→ How James used Kelly Gibson to map club delivery across 9 shot shapes→ Why throwers and laggers need completely different grape positions→ The mental/physical link — what happens to your swing when you get nervous→ D-Plane origins, TrackMan history, and measuring since 1982

In this week's podcast, I sit down again with Dr. Adam Maloof, Princeton professor of Geosciences and athletics fellow for the baseball team. This time he's tackling one of the most overlooked problems in baseball analytics: pitch classification. If you've ever looked at a scouting report and thought, “This guy doesn't throw seven pitches,” you're not alone. Dr. Maloof explains why existing pitch tagging data from popular systems (TrackMan, Synergy, and MLB's StatCast) are often inconsistent, inaccurate, and difficult to use for data analysis.Together, we discuss:Why MLB's pitch classifier is trained on what pitchers call their own pitches (and why that's a problem for hitters and analysts)How Dr. Maloof analyzed nearly 5 million college pitches using a “blank slate” approach inspired by geologyThe “color wheel” analogy: why pitches within a category (fastballs, breaking balls, changeups) exist on a continuous spectrum with no natural boundariesHow Princeton's staff uses reclassified data for scouting, pitch design, and pitching machine programmingPitch tunneling: what it is, how they measure it, and how they're teaching it to pitchersThe role of arm slot, biometrics, and what's next for this researchRead Dr. Maloof's article on pitch tagging: How to Classify a Pitchhttps://medium.com/sabr-tooth-tigers/how-to-classify-a-pitch-a4805ce35082Connect with Patrick Jones Baseball:On X: @pjonesbaseball

Can a niche hobby become a viable retail concept? The golf industry quietly experienced one of the biggest participation surges in decades during the pandemic. Millions of people picked up clubs for the first time, and the ripple effects are still reshaping the business of golf, from course operations to the rise of indoor golf concepts. This Retail Retold Replay revisits Chris Ressa's conversation with Brian Hilko, owner of Golf Factory in Mount Prospect, Illinois, and a tenant at DLC's Randhurst Village. After two decades as a PGA professional running golf courses, managing operations, and teaching the game, Hilko recognized something most operators overlooked: traditional golf experiences were often transactional and uninspiring. The game people loved deserved better. So he built something different.Golf Factory blends serious golf technology with an approachable, family-friendly environment. Powered by TrackMan simulators used by professional golfers, the concept allows players of all skill levels to practice, compete, and play year round without the intimidation factor many associate with traditional golf settings.Hilko shares the entrepreneurial journey behind launching the business, from identifying the opportunity during the COVID golf boom to building the space with an SBA loan, a partner, and a lot of hands-on work that saved nearly $1 million in construction costs. The conversation also highlights an emerging category within retail real estate: experiential concepts that draw consistent traffic and complement surrounding tenants rather than compete with them. Indoor golf has become a compelling example, delivering entertainment, community engagement, and repeat visits.Looking back now adds helpful perspective. The themes discussed, experiential retail, niche operators, and passion driven entrepreneurship, remain highly relevant as landlords and operators continue to search for concepts that drive traffic and create community. For retail real estate professionals, operators, and entrepreneurs, this replay offers a sharp look at how a passion for the game became a viable retail business. What You'll HearWhy the pandemic accelerated golf participation - and how millions of new players changed the business of the sport. The problem with traditional golf experiences - and why Hilko believed the industry often underserves players.Indoor golf's growing role in the sport - combining professional-grade technology with accessibility for casual players. How TrackMan technology is transforming training and entertainment - bringing tour-level analytics to everyday golfers. The entrepreneurial leap from PGA professional to business owner - and recognizing when the opportunity was right. How Hilko financed the business - combining an SBA loan, a partner, and a detailed business plan built from real operational data.Saving nearly $1 million on buildout costs - by rolling up sleeves and completing major portions of the construction personally. Why location strategy mattered - choosing a retail development with strong surrounding traffic and no direct competition. How experiential tenants complement retail centers - driving visitation that benefits surrounding restaurants and shops.Chapters00:06 — Brian Hilko's background in golfA PGA professional explains how two decades in golf operations led to entrepreneurship.01:26 — Why golf surged during the pandemicChris and Brian discuss the massive participation wave and why the game resonates with new players.02:31 — The appeal of indoor golfHow technology and convenience make the sport accessible for busy people and families.04:14 — Recognizing a business opportunityHilko explains the moment he decided to launch his own golf concept.06:22 — Building a better golf experienceWhy Golf Factory was designed to remove the intimidation factor of traditional golf.08:06 — Financing and launching the businessHow a network, SBA financing, and careful planning made the concept possible.10:25 — Technology that powers the experienceTrackMan simulators bring professional-grade data and gameplay to indoor golf.13:03 — The economics of the buildoutHow the team kept the total buildout under $1 million through hands-on construction.14:36 — Revenue projections and early performanceHilko discusses expectations for growth and seasonality in the business.15:43 — Finding the right retail locationWhy Randhurst Village offered the right combination of demand, traffic, and opport

Is your golf swing stuck in the past? In Part 3 of "The Rebuild," I'm back in the bay with Quinn Vilneff, Class A PGA of Canada Professional at Gowanus Golf Club in Vancouver. We've fixed the chipping issues, so now it's time to tackle the full swing. The one that's been holding me back for years. If you struggle with pulls, wipey fades, or feel like you just can't compress the ball, this lesson is for you. Quinn breaks down why my 61-year-old baseball background is fighting my golf swing and gives me three simple, actionable feels to finally get my sequencing right. We go deep on Smash Factor, Center of Mass, ground reaction forces, and the "kinematic sequence," but Quinn makes it simple. The result? Today we're continuing our series on families, children, and parents finding ways to keep playing golf after those first experiences in school or the local community. And with the weather here in Sussex being absolutely soaking wet, it's not exactly ideal conditions for getting out on the course. So this episode is all about golf simulators — indoor golf, TrackMan-style tech, and whether simulators might actually offer a brilliant, safe, engaging way for children and their families to play together.I'll be honest, I don't have loads of experience with simulators, and sometimes the amount of options can feel overwhelming… but that's exactly why I wanted to explore it. What should families expect? How do you make the most of your time? And how do you keep it fun and simple for children?

This week, host Richard Graves sits down with one of the most energetic and thought-provoking voices in modern performance: Niklas Virtanen, Head of Sports Science at FC Midtjylland. If you've ever wondered how a club without the financial muscle of Europe's giants consistently outperforms bigger teams, beating Nottingham Forest away, winning at Celtic, and challenging at the top of the Danish Superliga, this conversation tells you exactly how they do it. Niklas is a rare blend of passion, creativity and evidence-based practice. His presentation at a recent Catapult event had the entire room hooked, and this episode delivers the same energy. From dismantling traditional GPS limitations to redefining how football teams train for micro-actions, set pieces, and physical dominance, Niklas pulls back the curtain on the processes driving Midtjylland's success. This episode goes deep into the real-world application of sports science, the balance between data and intuition, and why sometimes the most powerful competitive advantage is simply learning to “solve problems without money.” Things You Will Learn * Why FC Midtjylland's entire model is built on “solving problems without money” and how data gives them a competitive edge. * How Niklas and his team dominate set pieces using Trackman technology and detailed ball-flight analytics. * Why GPS alone is blind to football's most important movements, and how inertial data captures the micro-actions that matter. * How to use accelerometers, gyroscopes and magnetometers to measure real football movement quality. * The truth about injury “prediction,” why we still don't know athletes' limits, and why subjective data is often your most valuable input. * How to balance analytics with player feelings, coaching intuition, and the “eyeball test.” * Why communication, not technology, is the biggest challenge when coaching staffs change. * Practical ways to design training exercises that actually transfer to match actions (including why traditional rondos may be overrated). * How to create buy-in across departments in fast-moving environments with shifting coaching teams. * Why the best decisions come from leading with data first, then layering coaching opinions on top. About Niklas Virtanen Niklas Virtanen is the Head of Sports Science at FC Midtjylland, one of Europe's most forward-thinking football clubs and pioneers in data-driven performance. From Finland's Jyvaskyla to the top of the Danish Superliga, Niklas has carved out a journey defined by curiosity, relentless learning, and a willingness to challenge traditional methods. Starting his career as a physiotherapist, he transitioned into coaching, performance, and ultimately sports science — where he discovered his passion for practical, applied, football-specific methodology. At Midtjylland, Niklas plays a central role in integrating data, performance analytics, inertial technology and coaching processes. His approach blends scientific rigour with real-world applicability, always anchoring decisions in the question: “Does this help the players perform?” He collaborates closely with coaches, mental performance staff, physios, analysts, and leadership teams, shaping a holistic performance culture built around trust, objective data, and constant communication. Niklas is known across the professional football community for his high energy, creativity, authenticity, and his commitment to pushing the boundaries of what sports science can be. You'll often find him speaking to — and learning from — industry leaders such as Chris Barnes and Paul Balsom, who he credits with encouraging him to explore unconventional ideas, test them in the real world, and build evidence from the ground up. He shares many of these insights on LinkedIn, where he's become a respected voice for modern performance practitioners. Tim Lovell has spent his life around competitive amateur golf, from growing up on his grandfather's nine-hole course in Georgia to a “year of golf” as an exchange student in New Zealand and a memorable AmateurGolf.com Ireland trip. Now he's giving back in a big way—helping coach Lakeview Academy's high school team and spearheading one of the most advanced tech-driven programs in the state. In this episode, Tim and Pete dig into how Lakeview built a true golf studio on campus with Foresight “Sim in a Box,” GC3s, a GCQuad, TrackMan, and portable mats for wedge sessions on the football field. Thank you for coming back and pressing play on this week's show. I've got a jam-packed episode featuring a major champion…and two of the most dedicated and respected teachers in our game. Leading things off is my great friend Shaun Micheel, the 2003 PGA Champion, and one of the very first guests to ever join this show. This marks Shaun's 39th appearance here, and as always, he brings thoughtful insight and honesty. We get into just how tough it is to qualify for the Champions Tour — and why winning a major doesn't automatically open that door. We also dive into how LIV has forced the PGA Tour to evolve, whether Shaun would consider playing if LIV launched a senior circuit, and we check in on how his Indiana Hoosiers have been surprising folks this football season. Then I'm joined by James Hong, a U.S. Kids Golf Lifetime Master Teacher, and one-third of the famed Two Hoosiers & a Hong trio. James gives us a fascinating look into coaching young players today — in a world where instant gratification, TrackMan numbers, and social comparison are everywhere. We talk expectations, patience, parents, and how to keep the fun and curiosity alive in junior golf. Be sure to come back for Part 2, because another one of the Hoosiers joins me — Scott Munroe, longtime Teaching Professional at the extremely exclusive Nantucket Golf Club. Scott shares what it's like teaching at one of the most private clubs in America, how he earned the nickname “99,” and why he teaches juniors backwards — starting at the hole and working back to the tee. He also gives us some great drills to keep our swings sharp through the winter months. It's an insightful and really fun episode — full of stories, wisdom, and a whole lot of passion for growing the game. Thanks as always for taking the journey with me.
What happens when cutting-edge analytics meet old-school competitiveness?Penn State pitching coach Will Jauss has the answer — and it's changing how college baseball develops pitchers. In this exclusive interview, Jauss takes us deep inside the Nittany Lions' pitching laboratory, where numbers meet nuance, and technology fuels transformation. From bullpen sessions wired with TrackMan, Rapsodo, and high-speed video, to in-game decision-making based on release consistency, spin efficiency, and pitch tunneling, Jauss reveals how Penn State blends science, structure, and feel into a unified system for success. But beyond the metrics, he emphasizes what can't be quantified — the mindset, discipline, and daily habits that make great pitchers great.Discover how Penn State's staff teaches its arms to command the moment, not just the strike zone; why command beats velocity every time; and how Jauss is preparing his pitchers to thrive against Big Ten lineups — and beyond. This isn't just a look at baseball's next frontier — it's a masterclass in how data, development, and determination come together to create pitchers built for the modern game.

1:08 -Insights on Sports and Personal ExperiencesMichael Wright and Nick Shedd engage in a conversation about their sports backgrounds, with Nick recalling a cherished memory of hitting a double in baseball as a child. They discuss the challenges of maintaining high performance in sports, referencing players like Cal Ripken Jr. and Aldous Chapman, and the mental resilience required to succeed at elite levels.10:48 -Discussion on Competitiveness in SportsNick Shedd discusses the mindset of competitive athletes, using Tim Duncan as an example of someone who balances a relaxed personality off the field with intense competitiveness on it. He believes that the essence of sports is to focus on the main objective, which is to score and prevent the opponent from scoring, regardless of style. Michael Wright echoes this sentiment, admiring Duncan's ability to remain calm while being a relentless competitor.13:12 -Overview of Nick Shedd's Career and Insights on Player DevelopmentNick Shedd detailed his journey to becoming the Director of Strength and Conditioning for the Boston Red Sox, highlighting his work with the U.S. Army, Olympic teams, and the Houston Astros. He explained the structure of the minor league system and the significant differences in player development, particularly between single A and double A levels, as well as the physical disparities between major league and minor league players.18:13 -Programming for Athlete DevelopmentMichael Wright asked how to effectively program for athletes at different developmental stages, particularly balancing the needs of older players and younger ones. Nick Shedd described their system, which includes 18 strength and conditioning coaches and a tiered approach to training. The foundational movement capacity tier focuses on basic movements with minimal loading for younger athletes, while subsequent tiers emphasize strength and power based on performance-related strength thresholds.21:11 -Metrics and Performance in Baseball TrainingNick Shedd outlined the collaborative efforts to enhance players' biomechanics, including their pitching and hitting techniques. He highlighted that metrics such as throwing velocity are critical for pitchers, with a significant correlation between speed and success in Major League Baseball. For position players, hitting performance is a key indicator of value, alongside the necessity of being a competent defender.25:12 -Data Tracking in Sports AnalyticsNick Shedd explained the advanced tracking technologies employed in baseball, such as TrackMan for pitch metrics and Hawkeye for in-game speeds and biomechanics. He mentioned that while MLB restricts the use of GPS wearables, minor leagues benefit from this technology. Michael Wright shared his perspective from football, emphasizing the significance of GPS data for player performance monitoring and injury prevention.29:29 -Balancing Athlete Robustness and DevelopmentNick Shedd explains that the average minor league career is short, necessitating a focus on physical development even during the season. He highlights the importance of educating players on nutrition and maintaining a consistent training regimen, often lifting twice a week to ensure continued improvement.33:47 -Strategies for Athlete Rehabilitation and Performance OptimizationNick Shedd explained the process of nursing injured athletes back to performance, focusing on the need to gradually increase their game exposure while avoiding overload. Michael Wright provided examples from cricket, illustrating the complexities of managing athletes who have missed significant playing time due to injuries. Both emphasized the importance of data-driven approaches in monitoring recovery and performance. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
