The Dilla is back! On this episode, we are joined by our good buddy Michael Pike, known to many as "the Dilla" (short for armadillo, because he has turned over every leaf in Alabama looking for big bucks!). We catch up with him on his awesome 2023 season where he tagged out in AL with 3 great bucks, two of which were big 10 points - all on public. Subjects include: How Michael got severely burned out on deer hunting & then got back into it The intangible aspect of being good at deer hunting Why your tactics haven't been working Listening to the woods (literally) to find deer Building upon each hunt to increase your odds every time The best way to plan out-of-state hunts The camaraderie of having hunting buddies, and how it makes you hunt better and tons more! It was great catching up and we are sure the dilla will be back on the show throughout the year. Got a question for the show? DEER HUNTING CONTENT IS BACK! This week we got together with our great friend, and great hunter Michael Pike to kick off deer season 2021. We discuss a wide array of topics ranging from how we are taking what we learned last summer to be much more efficient in locating bucks this summer. We also discuss how deer in our area sometimes don't change their range between summer and fall, reading summer deer sign to locate bachelor groups, using fresh dirt to get deer in front of your trail cams, using last seasons sightings and trail cam pics to guide us into bucks this year and a whole lot more! Tune in, tell your buddies, and get fired up for deer season! blackberrysmoke.com
We got together with our buddy Michael Pike to tie a bow around deer season! We discuss Michaels awesome season, and the big North Alabama buck he tagged out on with his bow in early January. We discuss how we planned to tackle this deer season and whether or not our plans worked out, how we managed to pick the exact tree last year that we would kill bucks out of this year, why we probably won't scout any bow spots in the off season, planning next season and our thoughts on some gear used in the 2020 season. blackberrysmoke.com
Everyone knows about grunting, rattling, bleating, etc...but there is a larger spectrum of sounds that a deer makes that people don't utilize! Michael has been implementing these finesse calling tactics to give bucks the confidence to leave bedding cover before dark. Its not always about attracting a buck through vocalizations or rattling, but instead painting a full picture that other deer are on their feet at ease. These tactics helped Michael tag a mature WMA buck in Alabama last week. You won't want to miss this unique perspective on calling!
Bowseason is here! On the way in to an afternoon deer hunt on some Alabama public land Andrew and Michael recorded this episode to cover topics such as thermals and how to predict them, picking a spot based on the right combo of bedding and food, where MOST nice bucks are killed in the South and more!
Mike Higman is joined by guest host, Michael Pike of The Unrested, to discuss their struggles of hunting mature buck beds in the South, with the Big Buck Serial Killer himself, Dan Infalt. Dan dives deep into the strategies he uses to kill mature bucks on public land and how he would adapt them to southern states. He tackles some tough questions about how his strategies work in the thick swamps and piney woods found south of the Mason-Dixon. There is sure to be information useful for whitetail hunters from across the US in this enlightening discussion. He also gives us an update on the production of his popular Beast Hunting Gear. What we learn: How would Dan Infalt hunt mature bucks in the South? Why Dan thinks all day sits are generally a waste of time. How would Dan combat the problem of overabundant food sources? How to locate buck beds with no snow. When is the best time to scout? What is the latest news with Beast Hunting Gear? Thanks for listening to the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast! On episode 27, we have a special treat. We actually got to steal someone else’s podcast episode and put it on our own feed! Our friend, Nathan Unger of The Whitetail Guru, wanted to do an episode with Parker about having a very successful Alabama season, and was gracious enough to let us use the same episode for our feed. You’re definitely going to enjoy this conversation as we dive pretty deep into the tactics that we use nearly every time we step into the woods. It would be a disservice not to at least mention here that our good friend Michael Pike finally got to shed some blood this week. We’ve made his tough season a topic of every episode lately, so it’s nice to see that his hard work paid off! Subscribe to the Sportsman’s Nation YouTube channel to be one of the first to see the video of Mike’s buck when it’s finished. There you’ll also find a nice line up of videos from the Southern Ground season. Thank you for tuning into the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast. This week, we're diving straight into spring scouting on public land with my good friend, Michael Pike. With the lack of agriculture in the south, it can be difficult to pinpoint where these whitetails live, especially on high pressured public land. Michael tells us how he has been able to use terrain and natural food sources to figure out where these big bucks are hanging out in the spring. Topics discussed: bedding, natural browse, bedding, and ground temperature. If you're a hardcore hunter, you're not going to want to miss this episode.
