Designing training that is engaging, compassionate and informative is key for instructional designer Hallie Martyniuk, principal at TD3 Consulting. She shares how working in crime victim services has shaped her approach to designing learning  about subjects that need to be addressed with sensitivity.Show Notes:Instructional Designer and educator Hallie Martyniuk shares advice on handling the challenges of delivering effective training on some of the most sensitive topics imaginable including sexual assault, domestic violence, and abuse. Her key points include:Trauma-Informed Design Is Essential: When creating training around sensitive topics like sexual violence or abuse, it's critical to assume learners may have personal experience with trauma. Being trauma-informed means balancing emotional content with careensuring that scenarios serve  clear learning objective.Make Training Relevant Through Real-Life Scenarios: Adult learners need to see how training applies to their day-to-day roles. Even with dry content like policy and procedure, Hallie recommends integrating realistic situations to make the material more engaging and memorable.Engagement Goes Beyond Clicking ‘Next': Poorly designed e-learning often feels like a glorified PowerPoint. The best training starts with real-life context, asks questions, and builds in critical thinking to keep learners actively involved.Work Closely with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs): Instructional designers don't need to be experts in every topic—but they do need to ask the right questions. Hallie stresses collaborating with SMEs to understand key concepts, vocabulary, and cultural nuances.Support Learners Beyond the Screen: Sensitive training content can trigger emotional responses. Designers should plan for this by offering resources like hotlines or support contacts in the “where to go” section and preparing facilitators to handle disclosures with compassion and care.Hallie Martyniuk serves as a consultant for one of d'Vinci's educational products, Mandated Reporter Academy. Powered by Learning earned Awards of Distinction in the Podcast/Audio and Business Podcast categories from The Communicator Awards and a Gold and Silver Davey Award. In the face of accelerating climate change, anticapitalist environmental justice activists and elite tech corporations increasingly see eye to eye. Both envision solar-powered futures where renewable energy redresses gentrification, systemic racism, and underemployment. However, as Myles Lennon argues in Subjects of the Sun: Solar Energy in the Shadows of Racial Capitalism (Duke University Press, 2025), solar power is no less likely to exploit marginalized communities than dirtier forms of energy. Drawing from ethnographic research on clean energy corporations and community solar campaigns in New York City, Lennon argues that both groups overlook solar's extractive underside because they primarily experience energy from the sun in the virtual world of the cloud. He shows how the material properties of solar technology—its shiny surfaces, decentralized spatiality, and modularity—work closely with images, digital platforms, and quantitative graphics to shape utopic visions in which renewable energy can eradicate the constitutive tensions of racial capitalism. As a corrective to this virtual world, Lennon calls for an equitable energy transition that centers the senses and sensibilities neglected by screenwork: one's haptic care for their local environment; the full-bodied feel of infrastructural labor; and the sublime affect of the sun. Myles Lennon is Dean's Assistant Professor of Environment and Society and Anthropology at Brown University. Alec Fiorini is a PhD student at Queen Mary University London's Centre for Labour, Sustainability and Global Production (CLaSP). Learn more about your ad choices. There's a powerful idea in the history of European legal and political thought: that laws must be possible for people to follow. Annabel Brett, professor of Political Thought and History at Cambridge University, describes how from ancient times through the Renaissance, thinkers believed that demanding the impossible—whether physically or psychologically—was a hallmark of tyranny. A classic example is Pharaoh in the Book of Exodus, who ordered the Israelites to make bricks without straw. Brett analyzes how legal thinkers balanced the need for law to be both realistic and aspirational, and how these ideas shaped the development of modern legal systems. Brett is joined by Princeton University's Melissa Lane for commentary. Series: "UC Berkeley Graduate Lectures" [Public Affairs] [Humanities] [Show ID: 40429]

Chas Smith (@BeachGrit) is a luminous figure in surfing, an adept journalist, and author. Born in San Jose, California in 1976, Smith's family uprooted and landed in Coos Bay, Oregon where he learned to surf. After studying intercultural studies in undergrad, Smith graduated with a master's in linguistics, going on to study in Egypt and at Oxford. Following a story he published in Australia Surfing Life about surfing in Yemen in the wake of 9/11, Smith went on to report in Lebanon, Somalia, Israel-Palestine, and wound up a captive of Hezbollah reporting for Current TV. In the early-aughts, Smith worked for Vice. Soon, he joined Stab magazine at the behest of Derek Rielly, then editor-in-chief, and they set in on an unparalleled era in surf journalism. Some of Stab's more controversial content garnered unsavory public spats that earned Smith some anti-Semitic epithets, and then in 2014, Smith and Reilly began Beach Grit—a deep well of incendiary, tongue-in-cheek honesty drenched in satire, sans filter. He's now a regular contributor to The Surfer's Journal, with bylines at Esquire and Playboy, and the author of Paradise, Now Go to Hell, a cultural vignette of Oahu's North Shore, which was a finalist for the PEN Center USA Award for Nonfiction. If you dig this podcast, will you please leave a short review on Apple Podcasts?
