B. Cox reviews Common's classic sixth album Be as it turns 20. In light of the commercial failure and mixed critical reviews, Common found some common ground in aligning with fellow Chicago hip-hop royalty Kanye West and his GOOD Music imprint on Geffen Record. A former pupil of No. ID, who produced the majority of Common's second and third albums (Resurrection and One Day It'll All Make Sense, respectively), West proved to be a good match to get Common back on tracks and back to his hip-hop roots in the Windy City.Largely solely produced by West (with minor assists from J. Dilla, James Poyser and Karriem Riggins), Common showcased in depth lyricism marked by poignant stories about life in Chicago and themes of the streets, love, feminism, ambition and knowledge of self. Joined by collaborators such as The Last Poets, John Mayer along with label mate John Legend and West himself, the album was a well layered effort that served towards Common's strengths. The album featured many singles, highlighted by "The Corner", "Go!" and "Testify". The album was Common's 2nd album to be certified gold and is often thought to be his "comeback album". It is also regarded along with Like Water For Chocolate as his best work.Visit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comBuy Exclusive The Vault Podcast Merchandise!www.vaultclassicpod.com/storeSupport The Vault Classic Music Reviews on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodBuild Your Own Amazing Podcast Website In Less Than 5 Minutes!https://www.podpage.com/?via=ivecre8Show NotesOkayPlayer: Common's 'Be' Getting 20th Anniversary Re-Release with 11 New Trackshttps://www.okayplayer.com/common-be-20th-anniversarySupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vault-classic-music-reviews-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

It's DILLA TIME This month's special is about Jay Dee aka J Dilla, a Detroit hip-hop producer's whose work is so prolific and influential his MPC sampler is in the Smithsonian. Dilla worked with hip-hop and R&B greats - Q-Tip, A Tribe Called Quest, Busta Rhymes, The Roots, The Pharcyde, D'Angelo, Common, Madlib and made his own signature rhythm that others copied - he used a sampler like no one had before. Through his unique methods of playing with layered timing, rhythmic expectation, polyrhythm, samples stretching and feel and his ability to bend time-signatures to his will, Dilla changed how music moves, and made Dilla Time (a term coined in the 2022 book of the same name by Dan Charnas). We explore his production work, solo music and the legacy of his final album from 2006, released three days before he died - Donuts - a sample psychedelic beat tape of melancholic beauty and a magic trick of sampling that serves as a towering and influential creative statement. The accompanying Dilla playlist. * Support Nialler9 on Patreon, get event discounts, playlists, ad-free episodes and join our Discord community Listen on Apple | Android | Patreon | Pocketcasts | CastBox | Stitcher | Spotify | RSS Feed | Pod.Link

D, T3, Illa J, Peanut Butter Wolf, Jazzy Jeff, Questlove, James Poyser, Musiq Soulchild, Bilal, Marsha Ambrosius (Floetry), Frank n Dank, Phife, Robert ”Kool” Bell (Kool & The Gang), Funky Rob, Roy Hargrove, Amp Fiddler, Pete Rock, Havoc (Mobb Deep), SA-RA Creative Partners, Marshall Allen (Sun Ra Arkestra), Flying Lotus, Iman Omari och Kanye West.

This episode of TNT brings us to the left coast to dig into the famed LA independent label Stones Throw Records. To kick this series off, we bring you something bittersweet - 2006's iconoclastic “Donuts” by rapper, producer, beatmaker, and record collector extraordinaire J Dilla - released on February 7, 2006, just three days before Dilla tragically passed away.
CTC Show Ep. 156- We were super excited to have the young prodigy Beats By JT, a talented beat making assassin, join us on the CTC Show! We talked about his dad's influence, first time hearing Dilla, being an anomaly amongst his peers and so much more. This young brother is truly something special!

On this episode of One Song, Diallo and LUXXURY break down The Pharcyde's “Runnin',” the track from the legendary hip-hop group that brought new flavor to the West Coast sound in the ‘90s. They dive into the group's introspective lyrics about vulnerability and personal struggle, how they met and collaborated with soon-to-be legendary producer J Dilla (at the time known as Jay Dee), and how Dilla's genre-reinventing beatmaking style – blending old school hip-hop and bossa nova samples – helped The Pharcyde popularize the alternative hip-hop movement.
This episode briefly examines two tracks produced by J Dilla: "Runnin'" by the Pharcyde and "Show Me What You Got" by Busta Rhymes. I discuss the stratification in Dilla's beats, their stuttering quality, their use and avoidance of quantization, and the response of the rappers to those beats.
Producer Gabby Gladney sees her South Side Chicago neighborhood in a new light thanks to Mahogany Bus Tours, a local company sharing hidden histories around the city.Read a profile of Dilla, and check out his TikTok.

Stopping to smell the concrete, an injection of inspiration fuel into the tank, and creating different stews. Kelly Finnigan (Monophonics, Kelly Finnigan) Kelly Finnigan “A Lover Was Born” Vinyl- https://www.coleminerecords.com/products/kelly-finnigan-a-lover-was-born "Distance as a measure of time and place informs Kelly Finnigan's, A Lover Was Born with a grit and grace that turns passion into virtue. The latest solo release from The Monophonics frontman roots itself in the best traditions of midwest soul labels like King, Curtom, Dakar, and the Bodie Recording Company. A Lover Was Born is a testimony that these deep cut grooves are not resigned to nostalgia, instead, they are at the burning heart of longing and hope. The journey Finnigan takes listeners on over Lover's eleven tracks echo the state of motion and growth since his solo debut, The Tales People Tell (2019). These two records bookend a prolific period of output, including a pair of Monophonics albums, a Christmas album, a mixtape, and a full slate of producing and engineering (The Ironsides, Alanna Royale, the Sextones). “There's nothing like making records,” says Finnigan. “It feels like that's my purpose — the reason I was put on this earth.” Written in California, Ohio, and Staten Island, Kelly Finnigan collaborated with old friends in and outside the studio. “I enjoy working alone but it's not how you want to make a record…almost everybody I brought in for this album I've worked with, toured with or spent a great deal of time with.” Max and Joe Ramey (The Ironsides), Jimmy James (Parlor Greens), Sergio Rios (Orgone), Joey Crispiano (Dap Kings) and Jay Mumford (aka J-Zone) all contribute to the overall sound of A Lover Was Born. Dramatic influences like Isaac Hayes (check out the piano on “Be Your Own Shelter”) and Jerry Ragovoy are chopped and folded into Northern Soul uptempo numbers to create stompers like “Get a Hold of Yourself” or “Chosen Few”. Finnigan's take on Deep Soul is captured brilliantly on “Walk Away from Me” and “Love (Your Pain Goes Deep)”, while Boom Bap pervades on hard hitters “His Love Ain't Real” & “Cold World”. Slower songs such as “Let Me Count the Reasons”, the emotional “All That's Left”, and the soul-stirring album closer “Count Me Out” show the honest and tender side that has become Finnigan's calling card. All the while, the voice is raw and earthy — in the best tradition of R&B shouters like Otis Redding, Lee Moses, and David Ruffin. The songs on A Lover Was Born reconfigure the spliced and sampled DNA of hip hop (extracted by crate diggers like Dilla and RZA) to create something new, underscoring both the spectrum and depth of soul while making a case to the timelessness of Finnigan's sound." Al Capone's infamy has made Chicago the center of what we call “gangster tourism,” where people from around the world visit the sites of Capone's most violent acts. But is that the right way to frame his influence on the city? We couldn't have a better guide than historian and TikToker Shermann “Dilla” Thomas. Dilla joins Host Jacoby Cochran to talk about Capone's New York origins, his hold on the city's operations, and how his legacy has shaped Chicago's self-perception. Also, did you know we might have Al Capone to thank for milk expiration labels? Check out Dilla on 6figga_Dilla on TikTok and his website, Chicago Mahogany, for in-depth tours around Chicago.

Put the headphones on and plan to keep your head nodding for the whole time, this week we have J Dilla's "Donuts!"Christian Dueñas - host of the podcast Primer - drops by to chop it up about a record whose full story took a long time to be told. "Donuts" was made as Dilla was in between and during hospital stays. While the popular account is the stuff of legend, there is another, more grounded story that is as beautiful in its humanity. It's impossible to see "Donuts" outside the context of J Dilla's death; his passing three days after its release is forever tied to this album. The result is what many see as a meditation on mortality, and a producer whose musical identity was continuing to evolve even as his body was failing him.Thank you to Christian for sitting in!Check out Primer!@primerpodFollow Christian!@buttsonabuttThanks for listening! RIP Sergio Mendes. Thank you so. So MUCH for the music. Godspeed, maestro Sergio. You'll always be in my heart. ❤️
Hey Visitors! After a nine-month hiatus, Nadine is back! In this episode, Nadine gives you a brief update on some of the things she's been focusing on in her "year of no." As mentioned in the show: Look out for new episodes on the first Wednesday of every month. In the last episode, Nadine mentioned she'd be moderating a conversation for the Minnesota Justice Research Center's Re-Imagining Conference. Here is a link. Nadine started a new job in a familiar place, the Hennepin County Public Defender's Office, and she was appointed to the Minnesota Clemency Review Commission. Nadine recounts her experiences at the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) conference in Chicago, a city she has now fallen in love with. She highlights the controversy surrounding former President Trump's appearance and her admiration for Nikole Hannah-Jones, author of the New York Times 1619 Project. If you are traveling to Chicago, Nadine highly recommends you book the Chicago Mohagany Tour with historian Dilla, also known as 6figga_dilla.

The Dilla is back! On this episode, we are joined by our good buddy Michael Pike, known to many as "the Dilla" (short for armadillo, because he has turned over every leaf in Alabama looking for big bucks!). We catch up with him on his awesome 2023 season where he tagged out in AL with 3 great bucks, two of which were big 10 points - all on public. Subjects include: How Michael got severely burned out on deer hunting & then got back into it The intangible aspect of being good at deer hunting Why your tactics haven't been working Listening to the woods (literally) to find deer Building upon each hunt to increase your odds every time The best way to plan out-of-state hunts The camaraderie of having hunting buddies, and how it makes you hunt better and tons more! It was great catching up and we are sure the dilla will be back on the show throughout the year. Got a question for the show? I don't remember who hipped me to Frank Cunimondo - I think I saw one of his records in Rob and Damien's old shop Sideman Records and was intrigued but didn't buy it then. And then maybe someone posted on IG something off of 'Echoes' and it was right up my ally - beautiful piano trio jazz with some rhodes as well. Snagged a copy of that album at WMFU a year later and was hooked. I know Dilla sampled one of his albums early but it's actually the only album of his I don't own - I just can't really get into Lynn Marino's voice, so that one isn't for me. But his other stuff is beautiful, independently released Pittsburgh jazz. I tried to play something from all his various albums (minus the Marino one) on here plus a bonus non-vinyl track. Enjoy!
Common sat down with Ebro in the Morning for a conversation about his career, the importance of self care, his newly revealed relationship with Jennifer Hudson, and more. The multi-talented rapper began the conversation discussing the importance of self love, meditation, and the importance of taking some time to yourself. He also opened up about a star-studded conversation between Jay-Z, Steve Stoute, and Nas in which they discussed the importance of vacations. The Chicago native then opened up further on his relationship with Jennifer Hudson, how they met keeping things private, and even working on some art together. Common also revealed he is working on a brand new album with Pete Rock and discussed the different producers he has worked with throughout the years. Other topics include Andre 3000, Nas' talent, an old conversation between Kanye West and J. Dilla, the Mos Def & Drake conversation and Hip Hop going pop, his top 5, and even his dislike for mac & Cheese. His new book 'And Then We Rise' is out now! Where it may have looked like the start of a movement to fans of these artists, according to Questlove himself it was really the end. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
