Let me get straight to the point - thanks to the help of @deuxmoi and all of my amazing contributors, I’ve collected a ton of scalding hot, third degree burn-worthy tea on SoulCycle, and am HONORED to be taking their sorry asses down this week. I start by reading email letters from two ‘famous’ former instructors. One details tons of employee drug usage (including during class!), instructor and client deaths, emotional abuse, fat-shaming, hyper-sexualization and homophobia during training, and the secret methodology taught in order to manipulate riders into coming back for more. The other instructor talks about bullying from clients, pay inequality between men & women, and how disgustingly SoulCycle treated her when she was publicly cheated on by her boyfriend - another famous instructor - and thrown into an intense media scandal. A former member of the corporate team also spills the beans on the way company PR is handled internally. (41:42) Voice notes from front desk peeps tell stories of hellish celebrity clients, the Stephen Ross scandal, size discrimination, SoulCycle forbidding their employees to eat fast food, and what “wafflestomping” is. There are voice notes from clients whose eating disorders were made worse by Soul, too. And lastly, we hear from women bravely accusing Connor Kelly and Mike Press of psychological and sexual abuse. I think it’s fair to say that Mike Press is a big personality and a well known figure in the Dundee Creative community. He runs service design consultancy Open Change with Hazel White. He decided to make the jump back into consultancy after a 25 year stint in education. This episode is a whistle stop tour of Mike’s amazing varied career from selling insurance to computer programming to being a service designer before it even existed. I think that one of the core themes of Mike’s career is social activism and empowering others to make a difference. He is a brilliant story teller and motivator and I took a lot from this chat. We touch on so many different issues including his fresh perspective on the future of education and what he wants to see in the future of Dundee. On this week is Ali McGill an accountant and experience designer. You wouldn’t necessarily put the two together. Ali talks about making a start in his career training as a traditional accountant. Over the years of running businesses and being responsible for profit and loss sheets he started to see the real value of putting yourself in your customers shoes. Using design tools and methodologies to craft memorable experiences for your customers. He talks about how his daughter introduced him to Service Design, with the influence of Mike Press and how Pecha Kucha nights and other events eventually drew him down to Dundee where he became Head of Enterprise and Entrepreneurial strategy at Dundee University. A bit of a long title and one that has certain prerequisites. We talk about the stigmas attached to the word ‘entrepreneur’ and the differences between an ‘entrepreneur’ and ‘designer’. Ali has started his own podcast under Ashton McGill called Never Settle where he speaks to people doing things differently and pushing boundaries in their fields. Definitely well worth a listen, check it out in the links below along with the episode I did for the pod. Hazel runs service design agency Open Change along with Mike Press and has spent a significant part of her career in education but according to her that might have been a little too long. She started out at Edinburgh University with her first degree but after 5 years working she realised that art school was calling. Hazel found herself in jewellery and metal work apparently attracted by the materials and the naked flames! I find it really strange that the smallest things can highly influence our career paths. Logically we should be looking to gain transferrable skills that will be needed in the future in order to make a living. Maybe high school teachers aren’t best placed to be advising or maybe we should be doing more education around career paths. A real trend of Hazel’s early career is proving people wrong when they say she can’t do something. An amazing attitude to have and there’s a real drive that you can see throughout everything she does. We first met at DJCAD when she began teaching design studies, what I didn’t realise at the time was how she’d just sort of picked it up! It also seems to be how she got into the world of service design, learning alongside Lauren Currie and seeing the real value in the profession. I know there is a bit of post-it note/whiteboard stigma around it sometimes but I don’t think you can fault the principles of the profession. There’s potential to have real impact within big organisations affecting how they operate and look to the future. Another interesting suggestion was a mandatory gap year. I could really get on board with this, not in the sense of going to Asia and trotting around with a backpack. More like a year to appreciate what working life is like to really appreciate the experience of university. We also touch on death, which I think is a fascinating subject we hardly ever talk about. Maybe it should form part of a roundtable discussion in the future. I just feel there are too many prerequisites that we just take for granted we should question everything more.
