The complete story of American imperialism is missing from our history books. On this week's On the Media, how the United States worked to capture territory and expand power, while preaching democracy and freedom. [01:00] Host Brooke Gladstone sits down with historian Daniel Immerwahr, on the hidden history of the United States empire. For Americans, empire often means economic and military power abroad, or CIA coups in Central America–not British-style imperialism. But the American empire was — and in some ways continues to be — a lot closer than most people realize. Immerwahr explains the role of guano — bird poop — in launching America's overseas empire, and the legal, political and social clashes that ensued.[17:57] Host Brooke Gladstone continues her conversation with historian Daniel Immerwahr, exploring why, at the dawn of the last century, the arguments over imperialism didn't end with poets like Rudyard Kipling and writers like Mark Twain. How should the adolescent U.S., big-headed about its democratic values, grapple with capturing territory? Immerwahr explains how this vital debate blazed across America's consciousness like a comet, then vanished just as quickly.[34:47] Host Brooke Gladstone and historian Daniel Immerwahr conclude their conversation, discussing how, after World War II, global anti-colonial sentiment (combined with less dependence on natural resources) led to a shrinking of America's physical empire. But the American empire didn't disappear — it merely changed form. This originally aired in our April 5, 2019 program, “Empire State of Mind.”Further reading/listening/watching:How To Hide An Empire: A History of the Greater United States, by Daniel Immerwahr On the Media is supported by listeners like you. This month, a very special guest with a very special mission joins Greg on the podcast from New York City, and we are going to get REAL. Anjalee Seneviratne began having seizures when she was growing up in Sri Lanka, and they discuss how a lack of awareness or education about epilepsy leads to people not doing the first thing to bring this condition into the light… talk about it. She is now living in New York City, and attempting to get a bunch of landmark buildings including the Empire State Building to light up for Purple Day on March 26. She has had some luck with World Trade Center and Bryant Park, but with more awareness there is certainly a way! Finally, they talk about a very serious subject that is often times not talked about openly due to its severity, and that is suicide. Anjalee had an episode this past year, but thankfully survived. She talks about how epilepsy and her medication side effects had an impact, and how people treated her after that event. 57: EMPIRE STATE OF MIND | The Majapahit Empire: Southeast Asia's Pre-colonial Superpower We do something a little different in this episode which is more history lesson than folklore storytelling.  We transport you back to the days when the Majapahit Empire ruled the seas of Southeast Asia. From its mystical origins in 1293 to its dramatic decline in 1527 – right when the Spanish arrived – we uncover how this Javanese powerhouse stretched its influence from Sumatra to New Guinea, commanding both respect and awe across the region. Join us as we sail through tales of maritime mastery, intricate trade networks, and the empire's unique cocktail of Hindu, Buddhist, and indigenous beliefs – many of which will sound very familiar!  Dive deep into the spiritual fabric of Majapahit society—where animistic rituals intertwined with royal decrees and the sacred ceremonies defined communal life. We'll explore how these ancient practices continue to echo throughout Indonesian culture today.  And wait til the end for myth from the Majapahit Empire that rivals the Disney tales of yesteryear – hello representation please. — The Gods Must Be Crazy is a podcast on Philippine Mythology hosted by friends Anama Dimapilis and Ice Lacsamana, avid mythology nerds and semi-professional gossips. Alicia Keys' new musical is opening on Broadway about a ten-minute walk from where she grew up in Hell's Kitchen. She describes the New York City neighborhood in the eighties as a “place where anyone who didn't belong anywhere accumulated.” She tells David Remnick, “There was this unique balance between that grime and the potential of Broadway” just steps away. “Hell's Kitchen” is the name of the musical that incorporates her songs to tell a story about a teen-ager named Ali who is growing up and finding her love of music, and it is even set in the apartment building where Keys was raised. Yet she is adamant that the show is not autobiographical, “because a lot of people think ‘autobiographical' and they think quite literally.” Keys, who was offered a recording contract at 14, was called the top R&B artist of the millennium by a recording-industry group, and with Jay-Z, she's responsible for the New York City anthem of our time: “Empire State of Mind.” In casting the role of Ali, a young woman very much like herself, Keys was looking for a “triple-threat” performer who also had “the energy of a true New Yorker … That's the hardest part, because you can't teach that.”

Shawn Carter grew up in Brooklyn's often dangerous Marcy Projects, where he was raised mainly by his mother. Absorb the powerful quotes and life lessons from mogul Jay Z. Jay Z's inspiring quotes will help you understand his empire state of mind which has propelled him to extreme levels of success. Any person who wants to accomplish big things can learn from Shawn 'Jay Z' Carter's knowledge, on life, business and success. Who is Jay Z? He was born on December 4, 1969 in Brooklyn, New York, U.S., American rapper and entrepreneur, one of the most influential figures in hip-hop in the 1990s and early 21st century. Shawn Carter grew up in Brooklyn's often dangerous Marcy Projects, where he was raised mainly by his mother. His firsthand experience with illicit drug dealing would inform his lyrics when he began rapping under the stage name Jazzy, soon shortened to Jay-Z (a name that may also have been derived from the proximity of the J and Z subway lines to the Marcy Projects). Jay-Z and two friends founded their own company, Roc-A-Fella Records, to release his debut album, Reasonable Doubt (1996), which eventually sold more than a million copies in the United States. A string of successful albums followed at a rate of at least one per year through 2003. Vol. 2: Hard Knock Life (1998) not only was the first of Jay-Z's releases to top the Billboard 200 album chart but also won him his first Grammy Award, for best rap album. The critically acclaimed The Blueprint (2001), featuring the triumphant hit “Izzo (H.O.V.A.),” solidified his status as one of the preeminent voices in hip-hop at the dawn of the 21st century. Shortly after its release, Jay-Z pleaded guilty to assault relating to a 1999 nightclub stabbing and received three years' probation, but the incident did little to derail his career. Ahead of the release of The Black Album (2003), however, Jay-Z announced his retirement as a performer. The ostensible farewell recording proved to be one of his most popular, with the brash single “99 Problems,” produced by Rick Rubin, attracting considerable attention. In 2004 he assumed the presidency of Def Jam Recordings, making him one of the most highly placed African American executives in the recording industry at the time. Today, we're talking about marketing!A business needs to be in a state of constant marketing.Let's talk about the Instagram Blue Check SubscriptionThey removed increased reach as a benefit on March 17th"Expand your reach with increased visibility and prominence in some parts of IG and FB like comments, search, and recommendations." This "benefit" was removed. My 2¢I think it's a plan by a giant company whose numbers are dropping.I think it's tricking many people into thinking something cool will happen because most people are looking for a magic pill. Most people think, "If I just do this one thing, it'll put me over the top!" when you should think, "How can I do common things uncommonly well."Again, it goes back to asking the RIGHT questions: How can I stand out to my target clients is a much better question than what can I do to get popular on an app?If you have a small following or are trying to build your clientele, focusing on a blue badge next to your name isn't help you.  Use that $15 for marketing that will give you a measurable return. Here's where you should focus:InternallyAsk the RIGHT questions Decide WHAT you want to do - What services do you want to offer or highlight? Decide WHO you want to serve - avatarFigure out WHERE those people are - This could be digital or in the actual real world. Figure out HOW you will make them aware of your existence - how will you stand out?In the real worldBring coffee to a local business owner and chat with themSetup a time to speak at a local hair schoolVolunteer at a local school event in your town - We're setting up at the father-daughter dance in our elementary schoolFind an open house or other events that might be looking for people to attend - we've been invited to business owner groups, and you can be too!OnlineFocusTry - Give an honest effortFocus on the WHERE your potential clients are and not on where you want them to be - for example, if your peeps are on FB, but you're only posting on IG, then you won't experience as much success.Be clearStop trying to impress other hair pros - that does NOTHING for youFocus on being the best solution to people's problems, your target audience."Attracting the RIGHT Clients" blog postLinks and Stuff:Our (weekly) Email ListFind more of our things:InstagramHello Hair Pro Website

Ken has built Manhattan skyscrapers, studied under Tony Robbins, and has been responsible for over a billion dollars of commercial real estate construction across dozens of projects that have forever changed the New York City skyline. Learn how you can put your money to work for you, rather than the other way around. Enjoy the episode!   “If you want to create any type of process mastery, you have to mirror and model, but if you don't set a basis for measuring, you're not going to get the result that you want.”   HIGHLIGHTS: Here's a breakdown of what to expect in this episode: How Ken got into building Manhattan skyscrapers, the “apex” of commercial development How to transition from W2 engineer to having your own projects Why motivation and productivity are the keys to achieve long term success Why work-life balance is completely unachievable Discover the Modern Wealth Building Formula Ken's hot takes on the hottest investments in today's and tomorrow's market And so much more!   ABOUT | KEN VAN LIEW: Ken Van Liew started his professional career with a civil design engineering job, twins, and two master's degrees, underpinned with a six-figure debt and a burning desire to serve others. Ten years later, he cut the ribbon on the development of a 17-million-dollar, 72,000 square feet, 113-bed assisted living facility. He parlayed this success into a Staten Island waterfront development and began a mastery journey with Tony Robbins. Unfortunately, while attending a Tony Robbins event in Hawaii, his waterfront development was terminated due to the World Trade Center tragedies. This moment gave Ken time to reflect on where he was, where he wanted to be, and the impact he wanted to have. Alongside the syndication and development of over a billion dollars of high-profile real estate investments, Ken created the Modern Wealth Building Formula as the fastest track to building wealth – a project that has empowered thousands of developers over the last 20 years. Simply put, Ken is a titan in the world of real estate responsible for over a billion dollars of construction across dozens of projects and has forever changed the New York skyline. In addition, Ken regularly speaks on stages, including NYU Real Estate Institute and the College of Engineering at Rutgers University, and is a best-selling author. Ken is an unsung hero in the world of stage magic, has been married for over 30 years, and is the proud father of three talented and successful children.   FIND | KEN VAN LIEW: Free 45-min Strategy Session: https://strategic.kenvanliew.com/ Free Book: https://my.kenvanliew.com/freebook Website: www.kenvanliew.com   CONNECT | SETH BRADLEY: Get Started | Download The Freedom Blueprint: http://www.attorneybydesign.com Subscribe and Leave a Rating and Review: Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-passive-income-attorney-podcast/id1543049208 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5a0Qp9G2x337nZCDWoVgoO?si=MKn01_t8Tfu0JBZCnagrCw Join EPIC | The Esquire Passive Investor Club: https://passiveincomeattorney.com/join-the-passive-income/ Join | The Passive Income Attorneys Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/passiveincomeattorneys Follow Us: Website:  https://passiveincomeattorney.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sethpaulbradley/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/passiveincomeattorney Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/passiveincomeattorney/

Sometimes it feels like everything that can be said about beer has been said. But then something comes along that fundamentally changes the way we think about a style, or our culture. For me, that recently took place with David Jesudason's GBH story, Empire State of Mind – Interrogating IPA's Colonial Identity.  Today's hop-forward beers are so divorced from the original 18th century IPA that it's rare to even hear the acronym spelled out – India Pale Ale. And until now, I'd never given much thought to how the marketing of IPA could reflect our modern understanding of empire – or lack thereof.  Empire State of Mind combines personal storytelling with historical reporting, and in the space of a few thousand words, IPA goes from a symbol of craft beer's revolution to one of colonialist invasion, exploitation and erasure. The article was mostly born out of David's frustrations at having to educate himself about this important and dark part of British history.

When we talk to other hair pros, one of the common things we hear is, "how do I find more clients?" and that's an OK question but not the one you should be asking. The question should sound more like, "How do I find the right clients for my business?"So today, we're going to break down some strategies and thoughts that will help you gain more "seed clients" remember, seed clients are the clients who pay your prices, don't complain, respect you, and treat you how you deserve to be treated. You have to believe in yourself and your offering SINCERELY, from your pricing to your work. This all starts with your state of mind. The second step is to think about how things look through other people's eyes. You are not the main character in other people's lives; they are. They likely don't care that you took another certification by a popular cleaning product. They care if you're the best solution to their problem. That's it. Think outside of social. Social is cool, and it's free, and we recommend utilizing it. But we must use other platforms and strategies we'll dive into soon. Since we are still using social media, here are a few things to consider. You need to create for the target audience: if you're not an educator or trying to be an educator, you probably shouldn't be posting formulas. You should prob post before & after pics (show the face!), show people being happy, and show their eyes. You need to learn a touch of photography, even if you're using a phone. In fact, especially if you're using a phone. You need to understand a little bit about lighting, composition, and on and on if you want to stand out.You need to be different on social (and any marketing efforts), or you won't stand out. Stop copying everyone and posting the backs of heads repeatedly–it doesn't play to how potential clients think.Demonstrate your business's strategic differences.Reviews & Social ProofOnline BookingMake the process as frictionless as possible. Digital MarketingWebsiteContact info: hours, location, current photos and videos (yes, videos)CLEAR CTAOnline booking Bio pageVibe and branding should be true and consistentOther possibilities to explore:podcastblog Retention is HUGE!Client experience should be a focus for every salon business.Connection to your brand.Follow upReferrals Links and Stuff:Our (weekly) Email ListFind more of our things:InstagramHello Hair Pro Website
