The unofficial anthem of New York City is “Empire State of Mind,” the Jay-Z song with that unforgettable hook, sung by Alicia Keys. So it was only fitting that when New York celebrated the Knicks' N.B.A. Finals victory, Keys took the stage at City Hall to sing it. It was a classic New York moment, for an artist who is herself a true New Yorker. In her musical, “Hell's Kitchen,” Keys uses her songs to tell the story of a teen-ager growing up, like Keys, in the titular Manhattan neighborhood, near Times Square—a “place of the have-nots,” as she told David Remnick, with “this unique balance between that grime, and the potential of Broadway.” They spoke when “Hell's Kitchen” was in previews; it went on to win two Tony Awards, and recently began a national tour.  This segment originally aired on March 29, 2024. Alicia Keys' new musical is opening on Broadway about a ten-minute walk from where she grew up in Hell's Kitchen. She describes the New York City neighborhood in the eighties as a “place where anyone who didn't belong anywhere accumulated.” She tells David Remnick, “There was this unique balance between that grime and the potential of Broadway” just steps away. “Hell's Kitchen” is the name of the musical that incorporates her songs to tell a story about a teen-ager named Ali who is growing up and finding her love of music, and it is even set in the apartment building where Keys was raised. Yet she is adamant that the show is not autobiographical, “because a lot of people think ‘autobiographical' and they think quite literally.” Keys, who was offered a recording contract at 14, was called the top R&B artist of the millennium by a recording-industry group, and with Jay-Z, she's responsible for the New York City anthem of our time: “Empire State of Mind.” In casting the role of Ali, a young woman very much like herself, Keys was looking for a “triple-threat” performer who also had “the energy of a true New Yorker … That's the hardest part, because you can't teach that.”

The critically acclaimed The Blueprint (2001), featuring the triumphant hit “Izzo (H.O.V.A.),” solidified his status as one of the preeminent voices in hip-hop at the dawn of the 21st century. Shortly after its release, Jay-Z pleaded guilty to assault relating to a 1999 nightclub stabbing and received three years' probation, but the incident did little to derail his career. Ahead of the release of The Black Album (2003), however, Jay-Z announced his retirement as a performer. The ostensible farewell recording proved to be one of his most popular, with the brash single “99 Problems,” produced by Rick Rubin, attracting considerable attention. In 2004 he assumed the presidency of Def Jam Recordings, making him one of the most highly placed African American executives in the recording industry at the time.
