In January 1776, Thomas Paine told the American colonies to break free from their king. But what was supposed to come next? 250 years later, that question still doesn't have a good answer. To mark the anniversary of *Common Sense*, we traveled to Lewes, England, the town where Paine lived before he ever set foot in America, and recorded our first-ever LIVE episode inside Bull House, the building where Paine honed his ideas about citizens and their government. Joseph Adelman chairs a panel with scholars Leanne O'Boyle, Nicole Mahoney, and Jeanne Sheehan Zaino as they dig into the legacy of *Common Sense*: democracy's "day two problem," the women Paine wrote out of his own story, why "the law is king" keeps showing up on protest signs, and what a 15th-century building in a small English town can teach us about where democratic ideas actually take root. Recorded live in partnership with the Institute for Thomas Paine Studies at Iona University.Show Notes: https://www.benfranklinsworld.com/435 EPISODE OUTLINE00:00:00 Introduction00:01:06 What Happened After the Revolution?00:02:59 Live from the Bull House in Lewes, England00:04:49 A Template for Common Sense and Civic Life00:07:12 Thomas Paine's Legacy in Lewes, England00:10:24 Thomas Paine's Legacy in New Rochelle, New York00:16:04 Democracy's "Day Two Problem"00:22:50 Local Civic Engagement in Lewes00:27:46 Women and Common Sense00:34:54 Paine's Family Life in Lewes00:35:31 Reconstituting Government00:42:44 Violence and Change00:49:31 "No Kings" Protest and 'The Law is King'00:56:29 Thomas Paine's Legacy00:58:10 Audience Q&A01:18:20 Episode Wrap-UpRECOMMENDED NEXT EPISODES

It wasn't some audition. It was a hotel gig in New Rochelle, playing the same 20 songs every other Friday night.A connection from that gig led me to a tour. That tour opened the door to subbing. And subbing eventually brought me to Broadway. In this new solo episode, I break down:• Why saying yes early in your career matters• Why showing up beats just posting• How small gigs compound over time• And how to know when it's time to start saying noIf you caught my talk at NAMM, this episode goes even deeper into that topic.READ: And if you're serious about building a real career in theater, get my book:Broadway Bound and Beyond: A Musician's Guide to Building a Theater Career. You can order it right now on Amazon or Barnes and Noble. If you want a signed copy, go to SignatureBrandWorks.com.Listen to the new solo episode.Pick up the book if you're interested. And I hope to see you at the Broadhurst!Clayton Craddock is the drummer for the upcoming Broadway musical Cats: The Jellicle Ball, opening at the Broadhurst Theatre on April 7th. Guy Davis to perform at Towne Crier in Beacon Guy Davis knows how to have fun. One of his favorite jokes as he tunes his guitar is, "Sorry, I'm having trouble with my G string." But once he sinks into a song, the room is transported. "Playing is a personal thing that hits my soul," he says. "The music takes me on a trip to the country, where there's rivers, grass, rocks, trees; come with me, and I'm a happier camper." Davis also travels back in time to a specific place, evoking the 1920s and 1930s Mississippi Delta blues and ragtime era, when guitarists mimicked the piano by playing multiple parts at a time using a thumb pick to drive the rhythm and either bare fingers or metal banjo picks to pluck the chords and melodic lines. "People watched Blind Blake play and asked him, 'Where's the other guy hiding?'" Davis says. The son of prominent actors and activists Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee — who befriended Pete Seeger during the Civil Rights era — Davis will bring a Towne Crier audience into the wilderness and back to the past on Feb. 15. Davis has done plenty of acting, including in the 1984 hip-hop film Beat Street, and in 2023 produced incidental music for the Broadway revival of his father's play Purlie Victorious, which received six Tony Award nominations. After hearing a didgeridoo in Australia, "I fell in love immediately," he says, and learned the circular breathing technique required to maintain the wind instrument's drone; the sound is like Tuvan throat singing. "It helps with my harmonica playing," says Davis, who squeezes out exquisite notes on the harp. Routinely covered by guitar media outlets, he also has two Grammy Award nominations. Although Davis gravitated toward acoustic blues and began recording regularly in 1993, he still tours while juggling acting gigs and other projects. Playing harmonica, putting a metallic slide on the ring finger of his left hand and using a 12-string guitar expand his sonic palette. The repertoire mixes originals and covers of the old-timers. His own work, delivered in a raspy voice, fits the period's vibe. Davis crossed paths with Pete Seeger as a kid at Camp Killooleep in Vermont, a magnet for the folk music community, and learned banjo from one of Seeger's brothers, John. "We lived in Mount Vernon and, one day, Pete was hanging out in our living room," he says. "When we moved to New Rochelle, there he was again." Davis often tagged along when his parents visited Beacon, picking out Leadbelly tunes and listening to recorded relics, some of which seeped into his playing style. "It was low-key; we weren't trying to accomplish anything," he says. "He influenced all the songs on my 1978 Folkways album Dreams About Life" and sang backup on one track. Davis sailed on the Clearwater, Woody Guthrie and Sojourner Truth many times. In the 1970s, he participated in fundraisers to finish the boats and often opened for the folk bard. "Once, in Poughkeepsie, we got there early and we were hanging out at a fountain," he says. "Soon enough, there's Pete with his pants rolled up, splashing around in the water, pushing the garbage to the side and getting all the kids in the area to take it away." After a 2019 concert in Albany, one newspaper reported that the bluesman had reflected Seeger's "greatest gift," which was not his singing or songwriting but "his ability to turn an audience of strangers into close friends by getting them to sing along. Davis had just accomplished the same thing." The Towne Crier is located at 379 Main St. in Beacon. Tickets for the Feb. 15 show, which begins at 7 p.m., are $25 online or $30 at the door. 250 Years Ago (January 1776) The Continental Congress said that Queens County appeared unwilling to support the Revolution because it refused to send deputies to a convention there. They declared the residents to be unprotected against the British and that no one should do business or communicate with them. A 47-page pamphlet called Common Sense, written by an anonymous patriot, was published on Jan. 10 and widely distributed. Its author (Thomas Paine) argued that there were two major flaws in British governance: monarchy and hereditary rule. "We have it in our power to begin the world anew," he wrote. "America shall make a stand, not for herself alone, but for the world." (After the war, the New York Legislature gave Paine a 100-acre farm in New Rochelle.) Col. Henry Knox reported that his train of 59 cannon and mortars seized from the British had reached Albany from Fort Ticonderoga and that residents helped to drag the heavy artillery across the frozen Hudson River. From there, Knox and his troops marched south to Columbia County before turning east toward Boston. Alexander Hamilton, 21, formed a provincial artillery company in New York City. Gen. Philip Schuyler led a force of 3,000 patriots to Johnstown, northwest of Albany, where they forced Sir John Johnson and 700 Loyalists to surrender their weapons. 150 Years Ago (January 1876) The Cold Spring Recorder reported that Dennis McCarty, a brother of James McCarty of the village, had been aboard a steamer that struck a submerged log about 20 miles from Memphis, overturned and sank within minutes. The seven crew members and 16 passengers managed to escape by riding the detached pilot house to shore. The Minneola had been going at full speed with 900 tons of freight, mostly furniture. It was 47 degrees on New Year's Day. Although a horse owned by William Ladue survived a tumble from the railroad bridge over the Foundry Cove and was able to swim ashore, it died the next day. Abner Merritt, the milkman, said he was attempting to break up a dogfight at the corner of Pine and Parrott streets when a man rushed from a nearby home and punched him, apparently because he wanted to see which dog would win. Nichols exhibited at his store a beautifully handwritten Family Register and the Lord's Prayer done on Bristol board with pens of various colors. It was the work of a young blacksmith who roomed with Morgan Putter. Levi Bailey showed the editor of The Recorder a turnip that resembled a small boy, with its roots as the arms. Charley Merritt, charged with assault, had to be "ironed" [handcuffed] by Officer McAndrew after his arrest on Garden Street to get him to the cells at Town Hall. The next day, Merritt escaped but was chased down. Justice Ferris sentenced him to four months in the Albany Penitentiary. The Cold Spring Library Association hosted a debate at the Reformed Church on the question: Resolved, that capital punishment ought to be abolished. Addison Merrick rented the store in Goodsell's building to open a grocery. "The addition of two grocery stores to our former number at this decreased season for business is, to say the least, a bold attempt," said The Recorder. After receiving a letter from his father in Cuba, Vincent Louise sailed for the island to address "political troubles." Louise was a naturalized U.S. citizen. J.A. Tait had a rough Wednesday, according to The Recorder. In the morning, he fell from his wagon and hurt his arm. In the evening, his horse ran away. He returned home to find the doors locked, because the ladies had gone on a visit. He propped a ladder to reach an upper window, but it broke and sent him tumbling. Milt Lawrence complained that a list published in The Recorder that said he had received assistance from the poor master was in error. The Recorder investigated and concluded Lawrence was correct: He had not requested aid. Instead, according to a "credible informant," Mrs. Lawrence had needed to see a doctor, but her husband was drunk and r...

Tackling The Mafia And Dangers of Informants: Retired FBI Agent Speaks. Special Episode. “This is a part of FBI work the public almost never sees,” Vinton explains. “When you're Tackling The Mafia And the Dangers of Informants, you're operating in a world where loyalty is a currency, and betrayal can cost lives or careers.” Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast social media like their Facebook , Instagram , LinkedIn , Medium and other social media platforms. In a powerful Special Episode now streaming on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast website, on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, and most every major Podcast platform, retired FBI agent and author Tom Vinton offers a rare, firsthand look into the world of organized crime, dangerous informants, and the internal risks faced by federal investigators. Promoted across Facebook, Instagram, and other News outlets, the episode takes listeners deep into the heart of New York's most violent Mafia crime families, and into the shadows where informants and agents walk a thin line between justice and treachery. Inside the Mafia Wars of the 1980s The episode dives into the turbulent 1980s, a decade defined by upheaval within the Gambino Crime Family, from the Crime Boss's leadership to his shocking 1985 assassination and the meteoric rise of another Boss. Vinton recalls the era as one marked by international heroin trafficking, brutal territorial battles, and the historic Mafia Commission Trial, which took aim at the leadership of all five New York Mafia families. Tackling The Mafia And Dangers of Informants: Retired FBI Agent Speaks. Special Episode. Look for supporting articles about this and much more from Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast in platforms like Medium , Blogspot and Linkedin . “The Commission Trial was a seismic shift,” Vinton says. “For the first time, the FBI could expose how the families cooperated, organized, and profited. It changed the direction of organized crime investigations forever.” The Perils of Informants: “A Necessary Evil” Vinton's book, Sanctioned Treachery: Portrait of a Drug Informant, becomes a centerpiece of the episode. Based on his decades-long career investigating organized crime and supervising the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force, the novel brings to life the dangerous dance between agents and the informants they rely on. “Informants are both indispensable and incredibly risky,” Vinton notes. “Some agents have had their careers destroyed, or even ended up in jail, because they trusted the wrong person.” Tackling The Mafia And Dangers of Informants: Retired FBI Agent Speaks. Available for free on their website and streaming on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and other podcast platforms. The book follows fictional FBI agent Eddie Michaels and his informant Alonzo “King” Curtis, a charismatic but ruthless operator whose moral compass is as fluid as the criminal underworld he moves through. Drawing on real-life cases, Vinton reveals how informants can both solve major crimes and simultaneously jeopardize investigations, or the agents themselves. “This could have happened,” Vinton says plainly. “Some of it did.” A Career Built on Crime-Fighting and Storytelling Tom Vinton's own story is as compelling as the cases he describes. Born in New Rochelle and a graduate of Holy Cross, he served as a Marine Corps infantry officer before joining the FBI. His assignments took him ultimately to New York, where he supervised massive organized crime and drug investigations. The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast episode is available for free on their website , Apple Podcasts , Spotify and most major podcast platforms. After retiring from the Bureau, Vinton became Deputy Commissioner of the Westchester County Police and launched a consulting business. But writing remained a passion. Tackling The Mafia And Dangers of Informants. “A professor once told me that writing would serve me no matter what career I chose,” Vinton recalls. “He was right. These stories needed to be told.” Originally published in 2005, Sanctioned Treachery was lost when the publisher went bankrupt. Now updated, re-edited, and released, it's earning renewed praise. One early review called it “a grand thriller… an exciting breath-holding adventure disguised as fiction.” How the FBI Fights Organized Crime Throughout the episode, Vinton breaks down how the FBI tackles criminal enterprises, not just individuals, using tools like: Undercover operations Court-authorized wiretaps and surveillance Asset forfeiture Informants and cooperating witnesses Inter-agency task forces RICO statutes “The goal is to dismantle the entire infrastructure of a criminal organization,” Vinton says. “Not just arrest a few people. We target the enterprise, its money, its leadership, its operations.” Tackling The Mafia And Dangers of Informants: Retired FBI Agent Speaks. Special Episode. The full podcast episode is streaming now on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and across Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. A Must-Listen Episode for True Crime Fans For those interested in the FBI, Mafia history, or the high-stakes world of criminal informants, this Special Episode delivers unmatched insight. “It's a reminder,” Vinton says, “that the line between justice and danger is thinner than the public ever realizes.” Listeners can tune in on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show website, on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, and most every major Podcast platform and follow updates on Facebook, Instagram, and other major News outlets.
