Matt also recently started a model railroading YouTube channel and it's taking off as he shares his techniques and layout progress with the world. Check it out, he's making some pretty awesome videos and sharing a lot of great tips & answering questions about scenery and more on his channel. In this episode, the hosts discuss the use of DCC systems to control things other than trains in model railroads. They address questions about using sound decoders for industry sounds, controlling streetlights and buildings, and animating layout elements. They also touch on the importance of matching the right speaker to the sound decoder and the limitations of motor draw and sound control on decoders. The hosts mention the use of function-only decoders for controlling lighting in passenger cars and buildings. They suggest exploring options like Arduino or Raspberry Pi for more advanced control. In this conversation, the hosts discuss the use of function decoders and sound decoders in model railroading. They explain how function decoders can be used to control lighting and other features on rail cars, and how sound decoders can be added to locomotives to enhance the audio experience. They also address the question of whether sound decoders can be used in other parts of the layout, such as in buildings or industries. The hosts emphasize the importance of checking the specifications of decoders and speakers to ensure compatibility and optimal performance. They also mention the benefits of using separate components for sound and function control, as it allows for easier replacement and troubleshooting. The conversation concludes with a discussion on the use of sound in buildings and industries, and the importance of balancing sound levels to avoid overlapping and overwhelming effects. It's time to check in once again with our old pal "Uncle” Dave and see what he's up to. On this episode of the “Fireside Chat,” we talk about instant gratification, and how it pertains to Model Railroading. There's more discussion about the “Chicago Line” book, plus our in ability to coincide our calendars with each other and how the Buffalo Sabres got involved. There's nothing more the Evel Overlord enjoys than a chance to chat with Dave about life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. When life is getting you down and the brakes just aren't going your way, there's no better medicine than being trackside with the Onondaga Cutoff. So grab yourself a big bowl of shredded hockey tape, a tall cool glass of melted rink water and enjoy!!
With only a few days left before Christmas, Tony Cook and I thought it would be a good idea to check in with Ken Bianco Jr at Trainworld and Trainland. Ken tells us about the items flying off the shelves this holiday season and shares the joy he gets from introducing new folks to the hobby. Later, Tony tells us about new releases from Bachmann, Kadee, Tangent, Rapido and many more.
