I've been revisiting Ursula K. Le Guin's brilliant essay "The Child and the Shadow". Le Guin was defending fantasy against the sterile modernism of her era—but what happens when that defence needs to evolve? We're no longer fighting a battle between "good" and "bad" fantasy. Instead, we're caught in something potentially more insidious: the tension between authentic imagination and the ersatz. From the disaster of Rings of Power to the destruction of Star Wars, from AI-generated Jung content flooding YouTube to the Soviet-style creative orthodoxy dominating our cultural institutions—we're witnessing the systematic neutering of the imaginal. But here's the thing: they can't actually touch the real. They break upon authentic creativity like waves upon rock. Through Le Guin's profound analysis of Hans Christian Andersen's "The Shadow" and Jung's psychology, I explore why confronting our shadow isn't just personal development—it's the key to understanding why authentic fantasy endures while corporate imitations crumble. Plus, I reveal how Bulgakov got there first in The Master and Margarita, showing us exactly what happens when the vital imaginal meets bureaucratic control. This isn't just about books or movies. It's about the difference between surface-level engagement and the depths where real creativity lives. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Joe From Queens to conversate on several Buffalo Bills topics, including counting down Patrick's list of the top 20 Buffalo Bills non first round draft picks of the modern era.Through interest and plenty of boredom, Patrick spent several hours going through every year of the Bills draft history and coming up with his power rankings of the best players that weren't taken in the first round. It's important to note that by modern era that means anytime past 1970 after the NFL and AFL merged. That disqualified a handful of 1960's draft picks that would've easily been on and likely near the top of the list, such as Butch Byrd, Mike Stratton, Tom Sestak and Billy Shaw.Patrick counts down his list with explanations for each and spoiler alert---there's three current Buffalo Bills players on the list. As you'd expect Joe has plenty to say about several of the players and especially the order Patrick has them ranked in. Fun little spoiler alert----Joe is not very keen on Patrick's placement of Phil Hansen and also thinks current Bills cornerback Taron Johnson is ranked way too low. Also, Joe has his Buffalo Bills/NFL Draft bingo board with plenty of hilarious nuggets. That plus their "True and False" segment, trying to avoid wrestling talk during Wrestlemania weekend and more.Major props to Talking Buffalo sponsor, Sonny Red's at 1841 Abbott Road in Lackawanna, just minutes from Highmark Stadium. We consider them THE most underrated spot for wings, pizza and other great food in Western New York plus it's a great place to drink and have a great time.♦♦♦♦♦Follow Patrick Moran/Talking Buffalo Podcast Substack: Patrick Moran's SubstackTwitter: @PatrickMoranTBBlue Sky: @PatrickMoranTB.bsky.socialInstagram: @PatrickMoranTBFacebook: Talking Buffalo Podcast

External forces of the modern era such as political & economic changes, emancipation, the collapse of the kahal autonomy, technological advancement, wars, urbanization & immigration, led to the mass secularization of the Jewish People in the modern era. Conversely Orthodoxy was defined and strengthened through confronting its struggles during this time. Many non-orthodox internal Jewish movements arose over the course of the 18th-20th centuries, each one attempting to redefine Jewish identity in the modern era. While most Jews secularized and assimilated, various internal Jewish movements from Reform & Haskala to Jewish nationalism, attempted to create an alternative sense of Jewish identity for modern times. The world today is like a ship with no anchor—adrift, lost, and tossed around by every new idea that comes along. We've abandoned truth, rewritten reality, and now we're paying the price. Anxiety, confusion, and chaos are everywhere because we've got nothing solid to hold onto. That's why Bobby Angel is here. His book, The Postmodern Predicament, tackles the big question: How did we get so lost, and how do we find our way back? We talk about why the world feels so unstable, how throwing out faith and reason led to this mess, and why beauty, truth, and tradition are the way forward.Bobby shares his own story—firefighter, seminarian, husband, father—and how wrestling with God's plan led him exactly where he was meant to be. We break down the lies of postmodernism, the crisis of identity in today's culture, and how to stand firm in a world that keeps shifting. If you're tired of drifting and ready to drop anchor in something real, this episode is for you. As conversation swirls around how the U.S. is going to pay back its $30 trillion debt, old concerns about public debt have been raised once again.Barry Eichengreen is a professor of economics at UC Berkeley and one of the leading experts on international currency markets and their history. His books include Globalizing Capital: A History of the International Monetary System, The Populist Temptation: Economic Grievance and Political Reaction in the Modern Era, and most recently, In Defense of Public Debt. Barry and Greg delve into the pros and cons of public debt, the mechanisms ensuring sovereign debt repayment, and the potential risks of inflation, and put modern debt levels into perspective by looking back at other major financial events in history. They also discuss the impact of political polarization on long-term financial decisions.**This episode was recorded in 2021.** *unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Show Links:Recommended Resources:Napoleonic WarsCorporation of Foreign BondholdersForeign Bondholders Protective CouncilMario DraghiRicardian Equivalence Anne Osborn KruegerArgentine Debt CrisisGuest Profile:Faculty Profile at UC BerkeleyProfessional Profile on XHis Work:In Defense of Public DebtThe Populist Temptation: Economic Grievance and Political Reaction in the Modern EraGlobalizing Capital: A History of the International Monetary SystemHall of Mirrors: The Great Depression, the Great Recession, and the Uses-and Misuses-of History Exorbitant Privilege: The Rise and Fall of the Dollar and the Future of the International Monetary SystemGolden Fetters: The Gold Standard and the Great Depression, 1919-1939Episode Quotes:The political capacity to issue public debt goes hand in hand with financial development31:25: If you go back and look at the history, you see the value to financial markets of sovereign debt—that as sovereigns' and states' debts begin to be recognized as safe and liquid with political checks and balances, they become safe. With the development of markets in them, they become more liquid. They're then used as collateral for other borrowing and lending, and you accelerate the development of private financial markets. So, I think the political capacity to issue public debt goes hand in hand with financial development, and financial development, historically, is an important component of economic development.Public debt as a lifeline in times of crisis02:58: Public debt has been critically important in history. To enable states to meet emergencies—so, if you look at the history, it has been issued typically in wartime to defend the realm. Admittedly, states and rulers have issued it to fight offensive as well as defensive wars, but also to meet threats, pandemics, natural disasters, and other national emergencies. Why public debt levels depend on politics and time34:50: I don't think economic science is advanced to the point where we can identify an optimal or uniquely sustainable level of public debt. I think politics impinges on this as well. So, if you ask a German politician and an American politician what an appropriate or optimal level of public debt is, they'll give you very different answers. Economic circumstances change over time as well. So, public U.S. public debt in the hands of the public has basically tripled since the turn of the century. Debt service—interest paid on that debt as a share of GDP—hasn't budged. Interest rates have come down, and they've been trending downward for the better part of 30 or 40 years. That has made it easier to sustain a heavier level of public debt.

From true crime pamphlets to reports from the scaffold, early modern Britain was gripped by tales of women who killed. But were these cases as common as they seemed, or was something else at play? Today’s guest is the iconoclastic Aussie filmmaker Kai Neville, who you may not know, hails from South Australia originally. He spent his early years down there where he was raised by a passionate surfer of a dad, who tragically lost his leg in a car crash on his way home from a surf trip east of Adelaide. It didn’t stop him though, the hellman that he is, eventually moving the family to the Sunny Coast so he could longboard the more forgiving point breaks of the Noosa region. And this is where Kai’s surfing journey really gets going - a journey that has produced a handful of the greatest surf films of the modern era.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The secularization of the Jewish People in the modern era really begins as a slow but growing trend within the communities of the Spanish Jewish diaspora of northern Europe in the 16th century. In the pre modern era, the legally backed autonomy of the Kahal – the Jewish autonomous communal structure, ensured that at least externally and superficially, the Jewish individual maintained a nominal Jewish religious identity and mode of observance. With the advent of the modern era, the rise of the nation-state, with its view of the individual citizen as an entity, the kahal lost its autonomous jurisdiction, religious affiliation was no longer the sole arbiter of identity, and secularism became possible for the first time in European history. As religious observance became a matter of personal choice, this voluntary association emerged as a defensive posture, which ultimately strengthened orthodox identity. Changes in legislation – especially emancipation and compulsory education laws – and the massive immigration to the United States at the turn of the 19th & 20th centuries, led to large swaths of Jewry embracing secularization in a growing trend which was bereft of ideology, leadership or a formal platform. It was rather a function of modernity, and its reality of integration into surrounding society. The modern era brought many external changes which challenged the centuries old Jewish communal structure. Political change, emancipation, wars, revolution, economic development, technological advancement, the industrial revolution, urbanization, immigration and other external forces, all contributed towards a growing trend of secularization among the general European as well as the Jewish population. This convergence of factors and the movement towards secularization threatened the religious status quo. Internal Jewish movements such as Jewish Haskala, Reform, Neolog and others arose in Germany, Galicia, Russia & Hungary, which sought to redefine Jewish identity in the modern era, and make it more compatible to integrate into an emancipated European society. Religious figures from the traditional establishment struggled with these new movements, redefining Orthodoxy in the process. Orthodoxy in the modern era came to define Jewish identity through its very struggle with modernity. Its combative confrontation with rival Jewish movements regarding the new means of defining Jewish identity in the modern era strengthened Orthodoxy, and paved the way for the flourishing of Orthodoxy as a movement in the modern era. At the dawn of the 18th century, the overwhelming majority of the Jewish People were religiously observant in the traditional sense. By mid-20th century, the overwhelming majority of the Jewish People practiced a decidedly secular lifestyle. How and why did this secularization take place? This new series launched on Jewish History Soundbites will explore this topic in this and upcoming episodes, and provide definitive answers to this important historical question. Over the course of the 18th-19th centuries there emerged internal Jewish movements in Germany, Galicia & Russia who advocated for changes within the Jewish communal, educational & religious structure. Haskala, Reform and others rose to prominence on the Jewish scene and prompted a long and combative response from the Orthodox establishment. Though it may be enticing to suppose that it was these internal Jewish movements which were the cause of secularization, in reality this was not the case. Secularization was almost exclusively caused by primarily external factors, all of which were distinctive features of the modern era. Political changes, emancipation, legislative changes, economic changes, technological advancements, the industrial revolution, wars, revolutions, urbanization, immigration trends, colonialism & other external factors of modernity, all combined to generate a silent trend towards secularization. This was a movement without ideology, platform or leadership. It was a reality of growing secularization which was a direct result of the modern era and its challenges. The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 1: 3:05pm- On Monday night, President Donald Trump pardoned 1,500+ Americans arrested for a series of crimes related to events at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th, 2021, and he commuted the sentences of 14 others. Rich notes that several things can be true at once: some of those arrested acted abhorrently, but the Department of Justice was overly aggressive with prosecutions. According to some reports, Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner is at least considering charging January 6th offenders with local crimes which would not be covered under President Trump's pardon. 3:15pm- In the Oval Office on Monday night, President Donald Trump signed an executive order clarifying the 14th Amendment—emphasizing limitations to “birthright citizenship.” The Trump Administration's interpretation states that the children of non-U.S. citizens who are in the country unlawfully should not be granted citizenship. The Congressional Research Center has noted that the Supreme Court “has not firmly settled the issue in the modern era.” Rich points out that courts already recognize a narrow exception to the 14th Amendment, not granting U.S. citizenship to the children of diplomats. 3:40pm- Michael Donahue—Cape May GOP Chairman & former New Jersey Superior Court Judge—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss the American First Policy Institute establishing a New Jersey-based chapter of their organization with Donahue serving as Chair!

The Secret to Unlocking Success Is Closer Than You Think! Have you ever wondered if you're overcomplicating the path to success? My guest today, Rory Vaden, reveals that the real key is simplicity. Rory is a personal branding expert, New York Times bestselling author, and the mastermind behind some of the biggest names and brands in business. We tackle the myths of success, personal branding, and the real meaning of entrepreneurship—and let me tell you, this conversation is packed with game-changing insights. Rory breaks down why building trust—not chasing followers—is the ultimate goal of any personal brand. He shares how the digitization of your reputation can create life-changing opportunities, even if you're “just starting out” or running a local business. You don't need a massive following or slick content; what you need is to add value by being educational, encouraging, or entertaining. Rory's "depth over width" strategy will completely reframe how you approach your business and personal relationships. We also dive into why multiple streams of income aren't the secret to wealth. Rory's approach? Focus on one thing, master it, and let depth create abundance. We explore his concept of "fractal math," which proves you don't need more customers to scale—you need to serve your existing clients better and deeper. What struck me most was Rory's perspective on entrepreneurship as a form of expression. Whether you're a small business owner, a creative, or climbing the corporate ladder, your work can become your art. But it only becomes worth it when it brings you peace. Key Takeaways: Why trust is the foundation of your personal brand. The truth about scaling: Depth, not width, creates real impact. How to focus your energy on one income stream to build wealth. The connection between service, peace, and success in business and life. Let this be your wake-up call: Success isn't about doing more; it's about doing better. Start serving, start simplifying, and start building your life on principles that last. If you're ready to take your personal brand to the next level, I highly recommend visiting freebrandcall.com/edmylett to book a free strategy call with the experts at Brand Builders Group.
